Part 1
The Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Vicki were in the Tardis, all wondering what terrors would face them next, despite the fact they had all quite enjoyed themselves on Vortis. Even more so once the Animus had been destroyed. Ian, Barbara and Vicki chatted amongst themselves but Ian sensed the Doctor was up to something as he watched him huddled over the controls. Oh how he wished he'd take him and Barbara back to 1963. Although they both loved being with the Doctor, things had changed once Susan had gone. Even though Vicki had become a sort of adopted grandchild, both Ian and Barbara knew the Doctor would never be the same again, which made them all the more determined to get home to the friends and family they missed, and who would probably be worried sick about them. He went over to him.
IAN-----------Doctor? Doctor? BARBARA---Oh leave him Ian. IAN-----------I want to talk to him. BARBARA---You should know by now you'll never get any sense out of him when he's like that. IAN-----------Yes I do know. VICKI--------Will I do? IAN-----------Thanks Vicki, but no. DOCTOR----A-ha! Got it! BARBARA---Got what? DOCTOR----Yes, I think it will work. IAN-----------Think what will work? DOCTOR----Mind you, it might not. IAN-----------I wish he'd talk sense. BARBARA---So do I. IAN-----------I don't suppose the next place we land we could have him committed? BARBARA---Oh, Ian! IAN-----------Just a thought. DOCTOR----Well we won't know unless we try. VICKI--------Doctor, where are we going? DOCTOR----Hmm? What was that? IAN-----------He doesn't know. He never does. DOCTOR----What was that? Of course I know where we're going. IAN-----------That makes a change! BARBARA---Well, where are we going Doctor? DOCTOR----Earth. IAN----------(hopeful) BARBARA---Earth?! DOCTOR----Now, don't look like that. It's not back to your time. IAN-----------I knew it was too good to be true. VICKI--------What are we going there for? IAN-----------Not Dalek hunting? DOCTOR----Oh, don't be so ridiculous Chesterton. It's a surprise. BARBARA---You mean, you've programmed in the exact place and time? DOCTOR----Yes. IAN-----------But you told us you couldn't do that. DOCTOR----Well, normally, I can't. IAN-----------So what's so special about now? DOCTOR----You'll see (chuckles). Yes. You'll see.
A little later, the Tardis materialised. Ian was fuming. The Doctor checked the panels then went across to the others.
DOCTOR----Well, here we are. IAN-----------So it seems. DOCTOR----Come along then. BARBARA---But the door's that way. DOCTOR----We must get changed first. And you certainly need smartening up Chesserman. IAN-----------Chesterton! DOCTOR----Quite so. Quite so. Now hurry up and put some smart clothes on. BARBARA---What for? DOCTOR----You'll see (leaves). IAN-----------That's it! I've had enough! BARBARA---Calm down, Ian. IAN-----------Calm down?! CALM DOWN?! BARBARA---Shhh. The Doctor will hear you. IAN-----------I don't care. It's time he heard what I really think of him. VICKI--------What's wrong? IAN-----------Him! BARBARA---But what's he done? IAN-----------Lied to us. VICKI--------The Doctor?! IAN-----------Who else? VICKI--------Don't be silly. He's such a sweet old man. IAN-----------Ha! BARBARA---Why do you say he's lied, Ian? IAN-----------To keep us here. Probably forever! BARBARA---That's absurd. IAN-----------Is it? Well think about it. He says he can't take us home because the Tardis can't land in the same place and time twice. BARBARA---So? IAN-----------So, how come we've landed exactly when and where he wanted? BARBARA---I don't know. Why don't you ask him? IAN-----------Because he'll only tell us a pack of lies again. Don't you see? This proves he can get us home but won't. BARBARA---Maybe it was just a fluke. IAN-----------Oh, come on Barbara. Not even you're that stupid. BARBARA---Thanks (!) IAN-----------Well, what are we going to do about it? BARBARA---Nothing. IAN-----------Nothing?! BARBARA---Nothing! IAN-----------Why not? VICKI--------If you're going to argue, I'm off to get changed (leaves). BARBARA---Because there's a time and place for everything. IAN-----------Yes. Earth, 1963. BARBARA---That's not what I mean. IAN-----------What do you mean? BARBARA---Perhaps if we humour him, the next time we land in might be earth, 1963. IAN-----------How do you work that out? BARBARA---Well, I don't think he was lying. IAN-----------Oh, you don't. BARBARA---No. IAN-----------What makes you so sure? BARBARA---Because even Susan said he couldn't work the Ship properly. IAN-----------So? BARBARA---So, don't you think if he could, he'd have been to see her by now? IAN-----------I never thought of that. BARBARA---He's all alone. An alien amongst three humans. How do you think that makes him feel? IAN-----------Lonely? BARBARA---Exactly. Susan was all he had. Now she's gone, and what's he got left? You moaning about going home all the time, without even considering his feelings. DOCTOR----Haven't you two changed yet? BARBARA---Just going. DOCTOR----Well hurry up, hmm. Can't be late. IAN-----------No Doctor (leaves). DOCTOR----And don't wear anything scruffy. This is a special occasion. BARBARA---Okay Doctor (leaves). DOCTOR----Really, those two. They're so slow. The Optera were quicker than them. VICKI--------Is this all right, Doctor? DOCTOR----Hmm? Oh yes. Very nice, my dear. Very nice indeed. VICKI--------Where are we going? DOCTOR----It's a surprise. Now, where are those two? VICKI--------Doctor? DOCTOR----Yes my child? VICKI--------Can you really work the Tardis properly? DOCTOR----Eh? What a question to ask. VICKI--------Can you? DOCTOR----Why do you want to know? Have Ian and Barbara been on about going home yet again, hmm? VICKI--------No. I'm just curious. Besides, all thoughts of leaving have gone out of their heads. DOCTOR----Has it indeed? (chuckles) Good. I knew it would, sooner or later. VICKI--------So? DOCTOR----What? VICKI--------Can you really work the Ship? DOCTOR----I'm afraid, I can't my child. If only I could everything would be much better. And everywhere would be much safer. The Ship's so old. Most of the main functions have broken down. VICKI--------Then how come we're exactly where you wanted? DOCTOR----Ahh. I knew one of you would ask sooner or later. But, er, to be honest, I thought it would be Chesterton. You know what he's like. Never happy about anything. Not even getting away from the Daleks, Animus, anything. Well, I'll tell you my dear. This is quite by luck. You see, Ian, Barbara and myself have been here before. Luckily I'd written down the co-ordinates in my diary. VICKI--------So you just programmed them in and here we are. DOCTOR----Exactly my dear. VICKI--------So, how come you can't take Ian and Barbara home? DOCTOR----Ah, well, there is a bit of a problem there. You see, I always make notes of them just before we leave. VICKI--------So, what's the problem? DOCTOR----Well, erm, in 1963 we left in rather a hurry. We usually get cleaned upor rest or something first so I can make final checks on the Ship before dematerialising. VICKI--------And you didn't? DOCTOR----Well, er, no. I keep meaning to jot down information after we arrive, but there's usually so much going on that I- VICKI--------Have to have a quick look around? DOCTOR----Exactly my dear. As a matter of fact, after leaving earth, I suddenly remembered I'd left something very important and dangerous behind. VICKI--------Dangerous? DOCTOR----Well, not you you or me. But if it got in the wrong hands... VICKI--------I see. DOCTOR----I must get it back some day. And, if I could work the Ship properly, I would have gone back at once. VICKI--------I understand now Doctor. DOCTOR----(puts his arm around her shoulder) I'm glad. IAN-----------Ready Doctor. BARBARA---Is this alright? DOCTOR----What? Oh yes, yes, it's fine. Now come along or we'll be late. IAN-----------Late for what? Doctor, you still haven't told us. DOCTOR----I have. It's a- IAN-----------Surprise. Yes, we know. But what is it? DOCTOR----Stop asking so many questions and trust me, hmm.
So off they went, following the Doctor to goodness knows where.

Part 2
An hour and a half later they were still walking. Everyone was worn out, except the Doctor who, for once, was racing ahead. They did stop a few times while the Doctor got directions, but they were fed up.
BARBARA---How much further Doctor? DOCTOR----Not far now. IAN-----------Can't we rest for a while? My feet are killing me. DOCTOR----Oh nonsense, my dear boy. Pain is all in the mind. IAN-----------Then I wish someone would tell that to my blisters. DOCTOR----A little walking never did anyone any harm. IAN-----------"A little walking" , he says! We must have walked more than ten miles! DOCTOR----Oh, stop complaining. You're just out of condition. IAN-----------After all the running around on various planets I've been forced to do in order to stay alive ?! VICKI--------Please Doctor? Can't we rest? DOCTOR----Are you feeling tired my child? VICKI--------Just a bit. DOCTOR----And what about you Barbara? BARBARA---Yes. I could do with a sit down for a few minutes. DOCTOR----Right, that's settled then. Come along. There's a nice looking grass verge over there. IAN-----------Typical! BARBARA---What is? IAN-----------Him. I suggest a rest and it's, "a little walking never did anyone any harm", but you girls suggest it and it's all settled. BARBARA---Oh, do stop moaning Ian (sits). IAN-----------(sits) Couldn't you have parked the Ship a little nearer our destination? DOCTOR----"Parked the Ship"? My dear boy, it's not a motor car you know. IAN-----------Then why the long walk? DOCTOR----Because the Tardis materialised at exactly the same place as before. Now, things have changed and I didn't know quite how far we'd have to go. What I need is a Stattenheim Remote Control. VICKI--------What would that do? DOCTOR----It would bring the Tardis to me wherever I am. BARBARA---Like a remote control device? DOCTOR----Precisely. Oh, wait a moment (rummages in pockets)..... A-ha! Got it! BARBARA---Got what? IAN-----------Don't let's start him on that again. DOCTOR----I knew I had one somewhere. VICKI--------What's that? DOCTOR----A Stattenheim Remote Control. IAN-----------Well, let's use it then. DOCTOR----Oh, not right now, dear boy. BARBARA---When then? DOCTOR----As soon as we've reached out destination. Now come along. We've had enough rest.
About twenty minutes later, the Doctor finally stopped outside a house.
DOCTOR----Here we are.
He went through the gate, down the path and knocked at the door with his cane. The others followed, puzzled. The Doctor knocked a bit louder. Finally the front door opened.
DOCTOR----Hello Susan. SUSAN------Grandfather!
She lunged forward and put her arms around him. Barbara and Ian couldn't believe it.
IAN-----------So, this is the surprise. DOCTOR----Of course! BARBARA---Why didn't you just tell us? DOCTOR----Because, if I had, it wouldn't have been a surprise. SUSAN------Oh Grandfather. It's so good to see you. DOCTOR----There, there, my child. SUSAN------When you left, I thought I'd never see you again. DOCTOR----But Susan, I told you that I'd come back. SUSAN------I know. But the Tardis is so erratic. Have you fixed it? DOCTOR----I'm afraid not my dear. SUSAN------Then how? DOCTOR----I found the co-ordinates in my old diary. You didn't think I'd miss your wedding now, did you, hmm? SUSAN------I hoped you wouldn't. I'd have hated to be alone. DOCTOR----Alone? But surely you have David to look after you now. SUSAN------I do, but it's not the same. DOCTOR----Now my child, don't you think it's time we all went inside, hmm? Ian, Barbara and Vicki are tired. It's been a long walk trying to find you. SUSAN------You walked? IAN-----------We most certainly did! SUSAN------Where from? BARBARA---London. SUSAN------But that's miles away! IAN-----------You're telling me! SUSAN------Well, come in then. David and Tyler will be back soon and I know they'll both be pleased to see you. BARBARA---So Tyler didn't go off on his own again then? SUSAN------No. He was going to, but David persuaded him to stay with us. IAN-----------Good. I'll look forward to chatting with him again. DOCTOR----So will I dear boy. And that nice young man of Susan's. IAN-----------Of course. DOCTOR----He is looking after you properly I hope, hmm? SUSAN------Of course he is. He was great after you left. DOCTOR----Good, good. Now, I don't know about the rest of you, but I'd like some tea.
They all went inside, still chatting. Unknown to them, someone was watching from across the road.

Part 3
Inside the house, Susan chatted to Barbara and Vicki as they changed and cleaned themselves up, while Ian and the Doctor waited downstairs for David and Tyler.
BARBARA---So, how do you like earth Susan? SUSAN------Fine. I miss all of you and the travelling. BARBARA---And the danger? SUSAN------Not that. That's one thing I'm glad to be away from. BARBARA---I wish i could get away from it. Mind you, there have been a few good moments. VICKI--------Like Rome. BARBARA---Yes. VICKI--------Now that was fun. BARBARA---Fun?! I didn't enjoy being chased everywhere by Nero. VICKI--------I wouldn't have minded. BARBARA---Oh yes you would. And that wife of his! SUSAN------Well, it's all over now. So, you travel with my grandfather now. VICKI--------Yes. BARBARA---We picked her up on a planet a madman tried to keep her at. VICKI--------I had no one to go back home to because Bennett killed my father. SUSAN------I'm sorry. BARBARA---So, we all decided to take her with us. I think she reminded your grandfather of you. And I think he enjoys protecting someone young. SUSAN------He had enough practice with me. BARBARA---He most certainly did! SUSAN------Barbara? BARBARA---Yes Susan? SUSAN------How was grandfather after you left me? BARBARA---Distant. Lonely too I think. But I'm sure he knows it was the right decision. SUSAN------I suppose so. I kept the key in case he came back. BARBARA---Did you? SUSAN------Yes. I wasn't going to. In fact, I'd left it where the Tardis was, but after a little thought, I went back and got it. BARBARA---Well, as long as you're happy here, you won't need it. SUSAN------No. BARBARA---You are happy, aren't you Susan? SUSAN------Of course. David's wonderful. And even Tyler's not as bad as he was. BARBARA---That's good. I'd hate to think of you miserable and I know your grandfather wouldn't like to know he'd made a mistake. SUSAN------I've got used to it.
-----------------------------------------
DOCTOR----How are your blisters now my dear boy, hmm? IAN-----------Glad of the rest Doctor. DOCTOR----Good, good. IAN-----------Susan seems happy. DOCTOR----Yes she does, doesn't she? IAN-----------David's a nice young man. DOCTOR----Yes. I still miss her very much. IAN-----------I know you do. DOCTOR----She never did clean out her cupboard. IAN-----------No. DOCTOR----Still, this is a very nice house and she keeps it tidy. IAN-----------Yes. SUSAN------Grandfather, David and Tyler are coming down the street. DOCTOR----And about time too. What have they been doing all this time? SUSAN------Shopping. DOCTOR----Shopping? SUSAN------Yes. How do you think we'd survive without food? DOCTOR----Well my child, I thought you'd live on your love. SUSAN------Oh grandfather! DOCTOR----"Oh grandfather!", she says. SUSAN------That's the front door. DOCTOR----Well I didn't think it was the window. SUSAN------Is that you David? DAVID-------Who else would it be? DOCTOR----Who else indeed? SUSAN------Well hurry up. We've got visitors. DAVID-------That's nice. Who is it? SUSAN------Come and see. DAVID-------(enters) Doctor! DOCTOR----(stands) Hello David my boy (shakes hands). DAVID-------And Ian. IAN-----------(stands) Hello again (shakes hands). DAVID-------Is Barbara with you? IAN-----------She's upstairs with Vicki. DAVID-------Vicki? DOCTOR----Our new travelling companion. SUSAN------My replacement. DOCTOR----Now, now Susan. Don't be like that. SUSAN------I'm sorry. DOCTOR----(puts an arm round her) You know no one will ever replace you. SUSAN------I'm being silly. DOCTOR----Yes you are. IAN-----------Where's Tyler? DAVID-------He's just putting some things in the garden shed. Sit down, won't you. DOCTOR----Thank you my boy. IAN-----------Thanks. DOCTOR----I was just saying to Ian what a lovely house this is. DAVID-------Yes. It was one the Daleks hadn't destroyed. IAN-----------Where are the original owners? DAVID-------The Daleks killed them. IAN-----------Why? DAVID-------Because they tried to escape. DOCTOR----That doesn't surprise me. DAVID-------The place was in an awful mess. IAN-----------I can imagine. DAVID-------So me and Tyler renovated the inside while Susan did the gardening. DOCTOR----You did that? SUSAN------Yes. IAN-----------How do you like having a garden? SUSAN------It's nice. Watching things grow. IAN-----------Better than nearly being killed. SUSAN------Much better. It's relaxing. DAVID-------Every time she gets homesick, she digs up a few weeds. DOCTOR----You're full of surprises my child. TYLER-------Well that's the....Doctor! Ian! DOCTOR----Hello again Tyler. IAN-----------Barbara's upstairs. She should be down soon. TYLER-------What are you doing here, of all places? IAN-----------Yes, I'd like to know that too. DOCTOR----We've come for Susan's wedding. That is of course, providing they aren't already married. SUSAN------We're not. DOCTOR----Good. Good. It wasn't a wasted journey then. DAVID-------It would be good to see you anyway. TYLER-------I agree. DOCTOR----Right then. So when are you going to make an honest woman out of my only grandchild, hmm? DAVID-------As soon as possible. DOCTOR----Good. How about today? IAN-----------Today? But my feet! DOCTOR----Oh never mind about your feet. This is more important. DAVID-------Well it's a bit short notice, but I'll see what I can do.
So off David and Tyler went to arrange it. Ian went upstairs to bathe his aching feet while the Doctor had a hearts to hearts with Susan, telling Barbara and Vicki to stay where they were until he'd finished.
DOCTOR----So my dear, what have you told David, hmm? SUSAN------About what? DOCTOR----"About what?" You of course. SUSAN------Not much. DOCTOR----Don't you think he has a right to know the truth, hmm? SUSAN------I don't see that matters. DOCTOR----Of course it matters. How do you think he'll feel, seeing you never agine while he does, hmm? And children. SUSAN------Children? DOCTOR----He's human. He'll expect them. SUSAN------I hadn't thought of that. Is it possible grandfather? DOCTOR----To be honest child, I don't know. I don't think it's ever been tried. SUSAN------What am I going to do? DOCTOR----Are you afraid he won't want to marry you if he knows the truth? SUSAN------Yes. I don't want to be alone. DOCTOR----Would you like me to talk to him? SUSAN------Oh, would you? DOCTOR----Of course. I'll do it after you're married. Now come on. Get changed. You don't want to keep him waiting now, hmm? SUSAN------Alright. I won't be long (leaves). DOCTOR----Now, how am I going to explain everything to young David?

Part 4
So, Susan got married. It was a brief ceremony. Shorter than a normal 22nd century wedding because of the destruction caused by the Daleks. Tyler was David's best man, Barbara Susan's bridesmaid, leaving Ian and Vicki merely watching as the Doctor gave his only grandchild away with tears in his eyes. Once it was over, they all went back to the house to celebrate, little knowing the stranger had gatecrashed.
DOCTOR----Happy my dear? SUSAN------Oh yes grandfather. DOCTOR----I'm glad. SUSAN------I just wish.... DOCTOR----What is it Susan? SUSAN------I wish my parents were here. DOCTOR----(puts an arm round her) I know child, I know. I wish they were here too. SUSAN------They don't even know we're not travelling together any more. DOCTOR----Well I can hardly go and tell them now, can I, hmm? SUSAN------No. I just wish things had been different. DOCTOR----If they had been, you wouldn't be here now and you wouldn't have met David. SUSAN------I know. Oh, why can't life be simple? DOCTOR----But it was, don't you remember? That's why we left our home in the first place. SUSAN------Of course I remember. DOCTOR----Would you have preferred to stay there? SUSAN------No. DOCTOR----Well then. One day I might be able to get back and tell them how happy you are. SUSAN------Do you think you'l be able to? DOCTOR----I don't know. It would be nice to see my family and friends again. You know, Ian and Barbara don't think I understand their desire to go home, but I do. SUSAN------We both do. DOCTOR----I may be forgiven. SUSAN------I hope so. DOCTOR----So do I my dear. (sighs) So do I. Now, enough of that. It's supposed to be a happy day. Where's that nice young man of yours I have to talk to?
The Doctor went over to David and took him into a corner where he explained about Susan. Meanwhile the stranger approached Susan....
DOCTOR----So you see David. You and Susan are quite different. DAVID-------More than I realised. DOCTOR----I'll understand if you don't want her any more. DAVID-------Don't want her any more? Of course I want her. She may not be human, but I still love her. DOCTOR----Good, good. And children? DAVID-------Well, I'll have to think about that. there's plenty of orphans around we could look after until we decide what to do. DOCTOR----I'm glad I've got you as my grandson-in-law. Now, let's tell Susan. Susan! Susan! Where is she? BARBARA---Are you looking for Susan Doctor? DOCTOR----Isn't that obvious, hmm? BARBARA---I saw her leaving. DOCTOR----Leaving? When? BARBARA---A few moments ago. DOCTOR----Who did she go with? BARBARA---A man. I'd never seen him before. But he seemed to know her. DOCTOR----What did he look like? BARBARA---Well, let me see... DOCTOR----Oh, do hurry up Barbara! BARBARA---There's no need to shout. He was dressed in black with a dark beard and hair. DOCTOR----No! It can't be! DAVID-------Who is he? DOCTOR----We've got to stop him. Which way did he go? BARBARA---Out the front door.
The Doctor rushed outside followed by everyone else. In the distance he saw a postbox disappear. He got the Stattenheim Remote Control from his pocket and summoned up the Tardis.
DOCTOR----Right, into the Tardis quickly! Not you two. DAVID-------Why not? DOCTOR----Because it's too dangerous. DAVID-------But Susan's my wife! DOCTOR----I know, I was there. TYLER-------Come on Doc. DOCTOR----Doctor! TYLER-------All right, come on Doctor. We can help. DOCTOR----How? TYLER-------Well I don't know yet, but we all worked well together fighting the Daleks. IAN-----------He has a point Doctor. DOCTOR----Oh, alright then. And hurry up. We don't want to lose her.
The Doctor closed the doors and programmed the Tardis to follow that of Susan's abductor. Finally they materialised. The Doctor turned on the scanner and was shocked.
DOCTOR----Good heavens! Not there!
Inside the post box (which had now turned into a column), Susan was terrified.
SUSAN------Who are you? MASTER-----I am the Master and you will obey me. You will obey me. SUSAN------I will obey you. MASTER-----Good. You're a very good hynotic subject, for someone of my own race. I didn't think it would be so easy. Now, what you must do is kill the Doctor and everyone else who's with him. Do you understand? SUSAN------I understand. I must kill the Doctor. MASTER-----Excellent! That'll put and end to his meddling once and for all. Then I can rule the universe without anyone stopping me. Come.
Back inside the Police Box, everyone was worried.
VICKI--------Where are we Doctor? IAN-----------Yes. You obviously know it. DOCTOR----I'm afraid I do and I never thought I'd ever come back. IAN-----------It's not Skaro, is it? DOCTOR----No, it's not Skaro! But it's somewhere equally as bad. DAVID-------Well, where is it? DOCTOR----Gallifrey. IAN-----------Gallifrey? DOCTOR----I'm afraid so. TYLER-------What's this, Gallifrey? DOCTOR----It's my own planet. Mine and Susan's. IAN-----------But didn't you say when we met that you and Susan were cut off from your own planet? DOCTOR----Yes. BARBARA---I don't understand. DOCTOR----I was bored with the way of life here. All we did was observe other planets, other civilisations. BARBARA---What's wrong with that? DOCTOR----I was bored. All those places to explore and no chance of doing it. VICKI--------What did you do? DOCTOR----I stole a Tardis. VICKI--------(disbelieving) You?! DOCTOR----Yes, me. It was in for its five hundred year service. IAN-----------So you just took it and Susan with you. DOCTOR----Susan wanted to come. Nobody forced her. BARBARA---What will happen to you now you're back? DOCTOR----Probably some lecture by the President. Then? Who knows? All I know is we must get Susan back before the Time Lords realise I'm here. IAN-----------Time Lords? Is that what you are? DOCTOR----I was, until I gave it up. DAVID-------So, are we just going to stay here all day? DOCTOR----Of course not! We'll find Susan then take her back home - to earth. But we must go carefully so as not to alert the guards. Come on.
So off they set, carefully finding their way around the Capitol and looking for any hint of guards. Finally they found her, bound and gagged and rushed to her. David untied her.
DOCTOR----Susan, are you alright? SUSAN------I think so grandfather. Where are we? DOCTOR----Home. SUSAN------We can't be! It's not possible. DOCTOR----I'm afraid it is. We followed the Master's course and ended up here. SUSAN------You know him? DOCTOR----Unfortunately I do have that misfortune. SUSAN------He said you knew each other. DOCTOR----We were at the Academy at the same time. DAVID-------I've been so worried Susan. SUSAN------I thought no one would find me. IAN-----------Never underestimate your grandfather. SUSAN------I never did. DAVID-------I don't know how we got here in that battered old box, but I'm glad you're safe. He didn't hurt you, did he? SUSAN------No. He just bundled me into his Ship and the next thing I knew I was here. BARBARA---He probably drugged you or something. DOCTOR----(suspicious) Hmmm. BARBARA---Doctor? DOCTOR----Oh, quite so, quite so. Now, can you walk? SUSAN------I think so. DAVID-------Well if she can't I'll carry her. DOCTOR----Good. Now let's get out of here before we're found. DAVID-------Good idea. Vicki and Tyler are waiting in the box for us. DOCTOR----"Box"?! My Tardis isn't a box young man. It's a Ship! IAN-----------Your Tardis? DOCTOR----(coughs) Well, erm, come along. Quickly!
So off they went back to the Tardis. The Master watched them from inside his and smiled.
MASTER-----My plan seems to be working. Who'd ever suspect dear, sweet, innocent Susan of committing mass murder? Oh, my genius even surprises me at times. Now, for the next step.
In the Tardis, Barbara took Susan to get cleaned up as the Doctor prepared to dematerialise.
IAN-----------I'm glad Susan's okay. DOCTOR----So am I dear boy, so am I. IAN-----------What was that place? DOCTOR----It's called the Panopticon. It's where the High Council and other Time Lords meet. IAN-----------It was huge. DOCTOR----Not when there's wall to wall Time Lords it isn't. Right, now David.... Where is he? IAN-----------Wasn't he with you? DOCTOR----I thought he was with you. IAN-----------Maybe he got shut outside. DOCTOR----I'll turn on the scanner and have a look. IAN-----------Nothing. He wouldn't just wander off. DOCTOR----No. Not with Susan safe in the Ship he wouldn't. IAN-----------Perhaps he's with Susan. DOCTOR----For his sake I hope not. IAN-----------What do you mean? I thought you liked him. DOCTOR----Oh, I do, I do. Let's just hope he's got lost somewhere in the Tardis. IAN-----------Doctor, you're keeping something from me. DOCTOR----Am I? IAN-----------Don't act all innocent with me. Now, what is it? DOCTOR----Pushy young man, aren't you, hmm? You should go far schoolteacher. IAN-----------Don't change the subject. DOCTOR----Alright, but it must go no further until I'm sure, agreed? IAN-----------Agreed. DOCTOR----Susan is not herself. IAN-----------But she said she was fine. DOCTOR----In body, yes I'm sure she is. But mentally? IAN-----------You mean he's brainwashed her in some way? DOCTOR----A crude way of putting it, but something like that. Now, come on. We must stop Susan doing what I think she's been told to.

Part 5
In Barbara's room, Barbara had ber back to Susan so didn't see her take out the Master's tissue compression eliminator and point it at her. Barbara turned as Susan called her.
BARBARA---Susan! SUSAN------I'm sorry Barbara, really I am. BARBARA---Put that thing away. SUSAN------I can't. Not until I've done what I came here to do. BARBARA---And what might that be? SUSAN------I have to kill all of you. BARBARA---Susan you can't! SUSAN------I must. I must obey. BARBARA---What's happened to you?
The Doctor and Ian burst in, followed by Vicki and Tyler, who wondered what all the noise was about. Susan turned and pointed the weapon at the Doctor.
DOCTOR----Susan! Listen to me Susan. This is your grandfather. SUSAN------You are the Doctor. I must kill you. All of you. I must obey. DOCTOR----But I'm your sweet little old grandfather who visited you today for your wedding. SUSAN------(confused) Wedding? DOCTOR----Yes, to that nice young David Campbell, remember, hmm? SUSAN------David? I must kill you all. DOCTOR----And David too, hmm? Or have you already killed him child? SUSAN------(confused) Not seen David since the Panopticon. When I see him, he must die too. DOCTOR----You don't mean that Susan. You've just begun your new life together. SUSAN------I.... DOCTOR----Grab her Barbara! Vicki, take that thing out of her hand and give it to me. SUSAN------(struggles) Must kill! Must obey! (kicks Barbara) BARBARA---Argh! I'll forgive you for that, just this once. DOCTOR----Ian, Tyler, try to restrain her. IAN-----------Okay Doctor. TYLER-------Right Doc. Er, Doctor. SUSAN------Must obey. Must obey. DOCTOR----(puts a hand on her head) Relax Susan, sleep, there's a good girl. Sleep. SUSAN------(relaxes) Must obey. Must.... DOCTOR----Take her over to the bed. How's your leg? BARBARA---Sore. There's a huge lump on it. DOCTOR----Kicks like a mule. (chuckles) I'm afraid my dear, it runs in the family. IAN-----------Will she be all right Doctor? DOCTOR----I should think so. IAN-----------This is what you meant, didn't you? DOCTOR----(sighs) Yes. I hoped I was wrong. He's a scoundrel! BARBARA---This, Master? DOCTOR----Yes. Brilliant mind. Brilliant. Almost as good as mine. Shame he has to put it to such bad use. IAN-----------So, what now? DOCTOR----We have to get David back at once. IAN-----------But we don't know where he is. DOCTOR----I should think he's in the Master's Tardis. IAN-----------He has one of these too? DOCTOR----I wasn't the only one to tire of the boredom. But we have a slight problem. BARBARA---Which is? DOCTOR----We're trapped. So, who'll get us first, eh? The Master or the Time Lords?
Inside the Master's Tardis, Davis was tied up.
MASTER-----It's no use struggling. You'll never get free. DAVID-------Who are you? MASTER-----I am the Master. DAVID-------So you're the bastard. MASTER-----Flattery won't get you free. DAVID-------What did you do to Susan? MASTER-----Not much. DAVID-------Then where is she? MASTER-----At this precise moment, she's with her grandfather and all the other bodies. DAVID-------Bodies? MASTER-----Oh, didn't I tell you? She's murdered all her friends. DAVID-------Susan would never do a thing like that. MASTER-----Under normal circumstances, perhaps not. DAVID-------What did you do to her? MASTER-----Only a little light hypnosis. DAVID-------Then why am I still here? MASTER-----Insurance. DAVID-------Insurance? MASTER-----Just a little precaution in case the Doctor isn't dead. DAVID-------I don't understand. MASTER-----Well, if she hasn't done it for some reason, you're staying right here until she does.
Back in the Tardis, Susan began to come round.
SUSAN------GRANDFATHER! DOCTOR----(comforts her) It's alright now Susan. SUSAN------But I dreamt I'd killed you all. DOCTOR----But we're all safe. See? SUSAN------Yes. David? What about David? IAN-----------I'm sure he's safe too Susan. SUSAN------Where is he? DOCTOR----When will you learn to leave things to me Chatterton, hmm? IAN-----------Chesterton! And I was only trying to help. DOCTOR----Well next time you want to help, don't! SUSAN------What have I done to him? DOCTOR----Nothing at all child. SUSAN------I've killed him, haven't I? DOCTOR----What nonsense. SUSAN------Then where is he? DOCTOR----The Master's got him. SUSAN------What?! DOCTOR----But I'm sure he won't harm him. We can't take any chances so we must get inside his Tardis. BARBARA---I suppose we just go and knock on the door (!) DOCTOR----Humans! We use Susan. TYLER-------But you can't! DOCTOR----Don't tell me what to do where my own grandchild's concerned! TYLER-------I'm sorry. DOCTOR----So you should be. IAN-----------Then how? DOCTOR----She was ordered to kill us, correct? IAN-----------Yes. DOCTOR----So what if she goes back to him and tells him it's done? BARBARA---It might work. Then what? DOCTOR----An ambush! IAN-----------Great idea. DOCTOR----Then we'll rescue David and rapidly leave Gallifrey. TYLER-------Best idea I've heard yet. No offence Doctor, but I don't think mush of this planet of yours. DOCTOR----Neither do I. Why do you think I left, hmm? Right, come along then. SUSAN------Grandfather? DOCTOR----Come along child. SUSAN------I can't. DOCTOR----What do you mean you can't? You must! SUSAN------I'll never be able to convince him. DOCTOR----Oh yes you will. Come here child. Don't worry, I won't bite you.
A short while later there was a knock on the Master's tardis door. He turned on his scanner and saw Susan standing outside. He opened the door for her and foolishly didn't close them again.
DAVID-------Susan! MASTER-----Quiet human or I'll destroy you. Is it done? SUSAN------Yes Master. MASTER-----Good. Good! I never thought it would be so easy. Give me the weapon. DAVID-------Oh, Susan. DOCTOR----That's typical of you. Always getting someone else to do your dirty work. MASTER-----Doctor!
The Master aimed his tissue compression eliminator at the Doctor and pressed it. Nothing.
MASTER-----What have you done, you meddling fool?! DOCTOR----Fixed you for one thing. How dare you use my granddaughter against me. So much for your superior brains. MASTER-----I'll get you for this one day Doctor, and when I do- DOCTOR----Oh, do shut up. Right, NOW! MASTER-----Now, what?
Everyone rushed in and pulled the Master into another room while the Doctor de-hypnotised Susan. She untied David and the Doctor ordered them all back to the Tardis. After a while, he strolled casually back to his old Police Box, chuckling to himself. Then he noticed some guards heading towards him so rushed in, closed the doors, quickly dematerialised, heading back to Earth.
IAN-----------Are we safe now Doctor? DOCTOR----For the moment, yes. VICKI--------Won't the Master follow us? DOCTOR----I shouldn't think he'll be going anywhere for the moment.
The Master finally reached the console room and tried to dematerialise before the guards he saw on the scanner reached him. He didn't understand it. Then he realised the Doctor must have done something so checked the circuits and noticed his dematerialisation circuit was missing. Stuck on Gallifrey for the Time Lords to deal with. Oh, how he hated the Doctor, but secretly envied his ingenuity.
Meanwhile, on Earth, everyone said their goodbyes and waited in the Ship for the Doctor.
DOCTOR----You just look after her my boy. DAVID-------I will sir, you can count on it. DOCTOR----And you look after both of them Tyler. TYLER-------I will. Goodbye Doctor. DOCTOR----Susan? SUSAN------Yes grandfather? DOCTOR----If you have any luck having children of your own, press this and I'll come straight away (gives her a multi-coloured ball). SUSAN------I will. Goodbye grandfather. DOCTOR----Not goodbye Susan. See you soon. SUSAN------Yes of course. See you soon.
The Doctor stepped into the Tardis smiling, dematerialised and headed for parts unknown......
The End
