LOVE AND DECEIT - When Mike Met Penny
Previously
“It can’t be” Mike kept repeating to himself. Could Linda really be Penny’s daughter? How many children did she have tucked away with different men and how many had she abandoned?
Then a much more horrible thought began to cross Mike Baldwin’s mind, so horrible that he hadn’t contemplated it before. Linda had been born in June 1975 exactly when his own daughter had been born. Penny couldn’t of had two different pregnancies going on at the same time? If Linda was Penny’s daughter then that meant ….
Mike couldn’t get out of King’s Road fast enough. His mind in turmoil. He felt disgusted with himself as he started to believe that his 4th wife Linda Sykes Baldwin was in fact his long lost daughter!
PART X Written Sunday, 15 May 2005
It was 4pm the next day. Mike was sat alone in his flat, Penny was wherever Penny was. Mike assumed at work but to be truthful he didn’t really care. The previous night he had made sure he was in bed before she got home, telling her when she did finally arrive he felt too ill for company and suggested she slept on the sofa. “Oh, poor darling” she had purred, “you must be coming down with something.” Mike knew he wasn’t coming down with anything but as to feeling ill, that was not a total lie. Mike did feel ill every time he thought of who his daughter really was. As to Penny he couldn’t bare to look at her. He hated her more than anyone or anything in his entire life.
Mike had managed to scrape through breakfast keeping conversation down to a minimum other than to inform Penny to be home by 6:30 as Mark was coming over. Mike pretended he wanted her to meet his eldest son. Mike had booked a table for four (himself, Penny, Mark and Adam) for 7:30pm and he made it quite clear to Penny it was to be a family meal that under no circumstances was to be ruined by anyone being late or any of her rows with Adam. They rarely saw Mark so it wasn’t much to ask to call a truce for one night.
Mike knew he was going to have to confront Penny sooner rather than later about Linda, however he just didn’t know how to begin. One thing Mike had decided is that any confrontation would not be today, nothing was to come between Mike’s special time with both his boys that evening. For Mark and Adam’s sake, everything had to appear as normal as possible to Penny. She would not know what Mike had found out until he had worked out what he was going to say and until he was good and ready to wipe Penny out of his life once and for all.
Mike glanced down at a box on the floor. A box full of the remaining photos and belongings he had left over from his ill-fated marriage to Linda. These were the items he had not been able to give away to Emily for a jumble sale after he and Linda split up. Her clothing he had got rid of within 24 hours and he wasn’t aware that Emily had actually passed on the cloths to Linda’s then best friend Geena Gregory who in turn passed them on to the police instead of the jumble getting them. Then the police had eventually returned them to Linda when it emerged she had run away to Dublin after Mike threw her out of his life.
As to these remaining items, Mike had been meaning to burn them for a long time, but for some reason he had never got round to it. However now he was only too glad he hadn’t destroyed them and had spent the whole day going through every photo over and over again. He had spent the day looking at Linda’s pieces of jewellery and bottles of perfume, smelling her scent.
Not for the first time that day, Mike picked up what remained of his wedding photos. As he looked through each photo of Linda he couldn’t help but feel revulsion at himself. Fancy him not realising she was his daughter? He should of known? There must have been some clue there to indicate the truth. The fact a young girl had had so much in common with him and reminded him of himself, should have been a warning to Mike. Mike analysed Linda’s chin, her nose, her forehead. He thought he could see a resemblance to Penny now. However was that just his imagination? “Linda couldn’t be his daughter surely? He would of known?” Mike argued with himself while faced with the growing facts presented before him.
Mike was getting more confused than ever when a clock struck 5pm. “Is that the time?” he thought. He better be moving if he was to pick up Adam and be back at the flat before Mark arrived.
Mike carefully put the items back in the box. Glancing one last time at a portrait he had had done of Linda while they were just courting, Mike ran his finger over the photo and said out loud to the air “I’m sorry. I truly am for everything.”
Mike placed the box back into the bottom of the cupboard it had been sitting in for near on four years and went to pick up Adam.
As Mike drove over to Coronation Street to collect Adam he reflected on the last 24 hours. What a nightmare? However he decided for his sons sakes he wouldn’t dwell on it, at least not tonight. Mark was coming over and Mike and both his boys were going out for a meal. Mike felt a sense of excitement at seeing Mark again. It had been at least two years and that was just too long. Mike knew that he and Adam should go over to Germany more often to see Mark but for some reason it was never convenient.
Mike thought to himself what could Mark’s news be? He hoped it was good. Mike pondered that perhaps Mark had a girlfriend he was serious about or perhaps he was even going to settle down and marry or may be he was going to tell Mike he was a granddad? “Now that would be pleasing”, thought Mike. It would ensure his family line for at least another generation. A grandchild would also provide another heir of Mike’s to do battle with Danny’s lot.
Mike arrived at the Barlows’ and knocked on the door. Ken answered and told Mike that Adam would be down in a minute.
MIKE: Actually I was wandering if I could come in and have a word?
Ken held the door open and welcomed Mike in.
MIKE: It’s about what I told you last night.
At that moment Adam came down the stairs with his bags.
ADAM: Oh yes, I really hope we find her. A brother and a sister that would be so wicked. I’ve always wanted to be a part of a proper family?
DEIRDRE: Cheeky, what are you talking about, you are a part of a proper family. You’ve been listening to that Aunt Tracy of yours.
KEN: Shush, the pair of you, it is obvious Mike wants to say something.
MIKE: Thanks Ken. I don’t want any of you to ever mention about my daughter to anyone, understand?
DEIRDRE: As if we would
ADAM: But Dad when you find her people will have to know.
MIKE: I’ve been giving it a lot of thought Adam and what your Granddad said last night made a lot of sense?
KEN: It did, that’s a first, the almighty Baldwin taking advice from me.
MIKE: Yes I mean it Ken, you were right. She may not know she is adopted, she may be happy, she may be the daughter of millionaires and the last thing she is going to want is to find out that I’m her Dad.
DEIRDRE: You shouldn’t be so hard on yourself Mike, you are a good Dad.
Ken shot Deirdre a look.
MIKE: Nice of you to say so Deirdre but I’m not so sure, you would have to ask Mark and Adam about that?
ADAM: She might be looking for you, me, her family? We are her real family! You don’t know that she doesn’t want to find us Dad?
MIKE: Somehow I don’t think so Son…Well what I mean is she may not even know she is adopted. If she does ever decide to come looking for us so be it and I’ll welcome her with open arms. However I have decided I am not going to look for her. I am not going to be the one to turn her life upside down.
Mike forced a fake smile but Adam looked unconvinced.
MIKE: Besides, we have each other don’t we? (Hugging Adam). We are okay just as we are and tonight I’m going to have a good evening with both my lads.
ADAM: Well I’m going to find her even if you are not, she’s my sister!
KEN: I’m afraid Adam, I have to agree with your Dad, its for the best. As hurtful as it may be, you must stay out of her life. Reunions rarely work.
ADAM: They did for us?
However no one was prepared to listen to Adam’s protests any longer. When Mike Baldwin decided a subject was closed, it was closed and that was the end of that. Mike Baldwin had decided that he didn’t want anyone to know about his daughter, not now, not never. As for himself, once he had dealt with Penny, he too would forget about it once and for all.
MIKE: Okay I’m just nipping to The Kabin to get some cigars. Here’s my keys Adam, dump your stuff in the car and we will soon be on our way.
Mike made his way to The Kabin. As he got there Norris was putting up the “We are Closed” sign. Mike tried the door regardless.
NORRIS: Sorry we are closed (pointing at the sign)
MIKE: Oh come on, all I want is some cigars.
NORRIS: Rules are rules I’m afraid.
RITA: Oh Norris shurrup and let Mike in.
NORRIS: But Rita what about the library? I’ve got to go tonight and you promised to take me.
RITA: And I will, after I’ve served Mike (she said with gritted teeth).
Norris grudgingly let Mike into the shop. Mike got out his wallet, took some money out and placed his wallet on the counter.
RITA: How you doing Mike? Feeling a bit better? The other day you looked so miserable.
MIKE: Yeah I’m fine (he lied). Been working hard and I think it is getting to me. Roll on Retirement. Well anyway you have a nice evening.
Mike picked up his cigars and left. However as he closed The Kabin door behind him Rita spotted Mike’s wallet on the counter.
RITA: Oh Mike, you have left….Norris you are going to have to run after him.
NORRIS: Me, I can’t do that, I’ve got bunions on my feet.
Rita rolled her eyes. “Never Mind” she said, we have to go past Mike’s on the way to the library, we will drop it in then if he doesn’t come back for it before.
NORRIS: But….
RITA: No buts Norris.
Mark pulled up with a female companion outside Mike’s flat in Weatherfield Quays. “Here we are, 6:30pm, right on time” he said. “On the dot” his female companion replied.
Mark jumped out the car and ran round to the passenger side to open the door, revealing his companion to be Linda.
LINDA: (stepping out the car) I never thought I’d see this place again and I really do not see why I have to be here now.
MARK: United front and all that, darling.
LINDA: Don’t see the point. The minute you tell him the news he is going to blow a fit and throw you out anyway (she paused) and that’s without me tagging along. And he could get violent? Have you thought of that?
MARK: Dad, violent?
LINDA: Yes don’t you remember what he did to me? He hit me on two occasions and I had witnesses.
MARK: (rolling his eyes as he had heard it all before), I know my Dad’s a monster and that’s why I need you, moral support….to show we can be adults about this?
LINDA: Even though we know he can’t?
MARK: Exactly
LINDA: Suppose (she scowled).
Mark and Linda made their way to Mike’s front door arm in arm.
LINDA: Well here goes.
MARK: Yep, and remember no matter what happens in there, I love you more than anything in the whole wide world.
LINDA: My life has been so awful Mark. Everyone I’ve ever cared for has let me down or I’ve got so paranoid that I’ve screwed things up for myself. I couldn’t bear to lose you too?
MARK: (stroking her hair which was over the side of face) You won’t lose me, I am not my Dad
LINDA: Promise?
MARK: I promise. I’ve loved you since that night on the factory floor at the millennium and may be just may be before that if I but knew it.
LINDA: You old romantic you.
MARK: I mean it Linda I really do. We have fought too long and too hard for me to give you up now. No matter what ‘the old man’ says or what he does in there. He will never tear us a part.
Linda and Mark leaned into kiss each other before he tentatively knocked on the door.

PART XI Written Saturday, 14 May 2005
Rita was in her car outside Emily’s house beeping her horn. She had been there five minutes already and was muttering to herself “and he said he was in a hurry.” Norris finally came bumbling out. “Hurry up Norris” Rita shouted. “I haven’t got all night.”
NORRIS: I’m coming. See how she treats me Emily? No sympathy for my bunions. Come here come there fetch this fetch that.
EMILY: You better get a move on then.
Emily rolled her eyes and watched as Rita and Norris pulled away.
NORRIS: I hope we aren’t going to be too long at Mike’s. I do need to get to the library you know.
RITA: Yes I know Norris.
NORRIS: I really don’t see why you couldn’t of phoned Mike and had him pick his own wallet up.
RITA: Because you need to get to the library and that would of taken time. It’s only 15 minutes to Mike’s from here and 5 minutes to the library from Mike’s. So don’t whine.
Meanwhile back at Mike’s flat, it was Adam who opened the door and boy could he not believe his eyes.
ADAM: Linda, is that really you? It is so great to see you again?
Linda and Adam embraced and she noted what a handsome tall lad he had grown into.
MARK: Hey mate nice to see you again.
ADAM: Yeah like wise. It is so fantastic you have brought Linda with you Mark?
MARK: It is (looking puzzled)
ADAM: Yes, has she come to save us from evil Penny?
LINDA: Penny!
ADAM: Yes Penny King, who is about to become Mark and my Stepmother from Hell.
Linda began to speak but she didn’t manage to get a word out before Mike appeared holding a bottle of whisky with one hand and a glass with the other.
MIKE: Mark, son so glad you are ……
Mike stopped in mid sentence as there standing before him stood Linda, his ex-wife, his daughter. Dropping the glass and the bottle to the floor Mike bellowed:
MIKE: What the hell is she doing here.
LINDA: Tut, is that any way to talk to your wife (she grinned)
MIKE: Ex-Wife you mean
LINDA: (putting her fingers to her lips and blowing a seductive kiss) Oh dear what are two missing letters between former lovers. (she chucked)
MARK: Now now Dad calm down, remember your heart. We are all adults here. Linda and I have some news.
LINDA: Excuse me there are broken pieces of glass on the floor shouldn’t someone clear them up first?
Mike’s mind was all over the place but one thing he did know was if he was going to get through the next few minutes then he needed a drink and he was now out of whisky, so it would have to be scotch. Mike toddled into the kitchen to fetch a new glass, not even thinking about the broken pieces on the floor.
MARK: (whispering to Linda) What did you have to go and do that for?
LINDA: What? (she whispered back through gritted teeth but still managing to look sweet and innocent).
MARK: You know very well what, winding him up like that?
LINDA: Me? Oh come off it Mark you saw his face when he saw me. It was one of pure hatred.
“Look Dad” Mark shouted into the kitchen. “I said I had some news and I really would like you to be happy. I want us to be a proper family and put all the past mistakes behind us. We should be able to do that shouldn’t we?”
Mike came back into the room and ordered Adam to promptly leave.
ADAM: Why and miss all the fireworks
MIKE: Adam just go (he bellowed)
ADAM: You can’t tell me what to do, I’m not a child anymore.
MIKE: You are 17 and you are living under my roof, so you will do what I say.
MARK: Still the same old man I see barking orders to everyone.
MIKE: Please Adam. I need to talk to your brother and s…Linda.
Adam scuttled off leaving the room in a tense silence. To try and break the tension Linda moved towards the sofa and sat herself down and gestured Mark to follow while Mike remained frozen to the spot.
LINDA: So, Adam was telling us congratulations are in order?
MARK: Oh yes, Linda’s right, he did? Penny is it? I hope you will be very happy together?
LINDA: I know a Penny King…
MIKE: (interrupting) Never mind about Penny King, what I want to know is son, why have you brought that thing (pointing to Linda) here.
At that moment Rita and Norris were turning into Weatherfield Quays.
“We are going to be too late for the library” Norris wittered. “Its only 7pm” Rita exclaimed “and it doesn’t shut until 8pm.” “Yes but we have to call in on Mike’s first with his wallet” Norris went on. “I haven’t forgotten, we are nearly at Mike’s now and we will still have time to get to the library” an irritated Rita replied. “Oh but you see I have to be in the right frame of mind but now I’m getting stressed” he replied. “Right frame of mind for what” Rita replied exasperated. “I’m writing a book” went on Norris. Rita rolled her eyes.
RITA: A book?
NORRIS: Yes, if Mel Hutchwright can do it, then I’ve been thinking so can I.
Norris went on and on boring poor Rita to the point that she was regretting offering to take him.
NORRIS: Look can’t you go a bit faster?
RITA: No we can’t?
Norris frowned while back at the flat…
LINDA: (sensing Mark’s unease) Its rather funny Mike, you see you aren’t the only one getting married? So are Mark and me, I’m finally over you (she grinned). Perhaps we can have a double wedding?
MIKE: (shock on his face) What no you can’t?
“Yes”, Adam said to himself from behind his bedroom door listening to the entire conversation.
MARK: What do you mean we can’t?
MIKE: (pausing for a moment to collect his thoughts), you just can’t, it’s just not right.
LINDA: Not right?
MIKE: You were married to me for gawds sake!
LINDA: That was a long time ago and you threw me out remember?
MARK: You can’t stop us we have been in love for years. If it hadn’t been for you we would of probably been married sooner.
MIKE: You can’t do this, you mustn’t do this?
LINDA: (all seductively) Oh Mike do you want me back?
MIKE: What! (in shock) no certainly not.
MARK: Then give us one good reason why Linda and I can’t be together?
NORRIS: Look can’t we go to the library first and then back to Mike’s
RITA: (sighing) We are almost to Mike’s now.
NORRIS: Well it doesn’t matter does it, we can come back this way?
RITA: No, we are going to Mike’s first. He is going to need his wallet this evening because he is taking Mark and Adam out for a meal. Look there’s his street up a head.
NORRIS: Mark…
Mike realised the moment couldn’t be put off, Linda and Mark would have to be told the dreadful truth. It was bad enough knowing that she had married her father but he couldn’t now sit back and let Linda marry her brother also. Mike went to sit down on a chair facing the sofa.
MIKE: You can’t marry because….because
LINDA: Well I’m going if you don’t spit it out soon (hissing to Mark) see I told you it was a mistake me coming. We have managed perfectly well together for the past three years without him needing to know, managing with me in Dublin while he visited you in Germany.
MARK: You were right Linda, we should of just of got married and sent him a postcard (he sneered).
MIKE: No, I’m glad you didn’t do that because you see Mark, it would be incest.
LINDA: Incest? (Looking at Mark) Is he going senile? (Looking at Mike) WE ARE DIVORCED MIKE!
MIKE: Mark please listen to me, Linda is your sister!
Mark began to burst into laughter. The whole notion of it was preposterous. “If this is meant to be an April Fool’s joke then you are a bit late Dad.”
MIKE: I wish it were a joke
LINDA: Are you that desperate to keep us a part that you would make up such a lie. I have my birth certificate y’know and it says my parents are Raymond Sykes and Evelyn Margaret Harris and not anywhere on it does it mention adoption.
MIKE: I know Linda and I don’t understand why your birth certificate is the way it is but it is wrong. You are not Ray and Eve’s daughter?
LINDA: I’m not, so who’s then?
MIKE: Mine
MARK: Come on Linda we are leaving. You are sick you know that Dad. I came here today thinking we could try and be a normal, happy family. But some things never change do they? You are still the same old Mike Baldwin having to control everyone’s lives and stopping anyone from having some happiness
MIKE: No son you are wrong.
Mark got up to leave and gestured for Linda to do the same. However Mike stopped them.
MIKE: Look both of you it really is true? I wouldn’t make up something so awful. I don’t want it to be true anymore than you do. Believe me?
LINDA: Why should we believe you Mike?
MARK: How come I’ve never heard about a sister before?
LINDA: More to the point why marry me if I was your daughter?
Adam came out of the bedroom at that moment having listened into the entire conversation.
ADAM: Dad does have a daughter, we have a sister Mark? He told me last night. However he said he didn’t know where or who she was?
MIKE: (sighing) and I didn’t last night Adam that was true. Linda, you have an ‘Aunty Penny’ don’t you?
LINDA: Yes why what has that got to do with anything?
ADAM: She’s not called Penny King by any chance is she?
Linda started to look confused but she also nodded her head to Adam’s question. Tentatively she replied,
LINDA: Yes, King’s her married name. She was born Harris though, my Mam’s sister.
MIKE: Penny and I had an affair many years ago, and a baby girl was born of it. Until last night I thought Penny had given the baby up for adoption. However I went to King’s Road and heard her rowing with that piece of no good Ray Sykes…
LINDA: Hold on don’t bring my dad into this
MIKE: (raising his voice in frustration) He’s not your father, Linda. For reasons I still do not know, Ray and Eve ended up with my daughter – you!
MARK: Oh I’ve heard enough of this you are pathetic. You have to make all this up? And even if it is true, I just can’t believe how you would be so clumsy over a third child. Let a third child disappear from your life for a long period? How many more children do you have tucked away….DAAAAD!”
Mark went to the door and ordered Linda to follow, however Linda just couldn’t she was frozen to the spot. Her mind going round in circles. She didn’t think Mike was lying, she had lived with him for two years and been married to him for almost one. She knew when Mike Baldwin was lying, she knew how to read his mind and Linda also knew in her heart that Mike was not lying over this. He might have his facts wrong but he wasn’t lying. As Linda started to think back over her life, little things that perhaps hadn’t made sense started to.
MIKE: Mark please don’t leave, not yet we have a lot to talk about. I love you son, you and Adam…
MARK: Forget it Dad, I’ve heard it all before how we mean everything to you. Yet you still manage to hurt us. This time you have gone too far? I will never forgive you for this, not ever.
Mark opened the door to the flat before turning round to face Mike for one last time. “You need to ask yourself Dad why Penny, Mum and Susan Barlow all chose to keep their babies from you?” With that Mark stormed out of the flat banging the door behind him.
Mike looked wounded as he returned his attention to Linda, still frozen on the spot and Adam who just looked blankly at his Dad.
ADAM: This is why you didn’t want to find her isn’t it Dad? This is why you changed your mind. You found out she was Linda and you knew it would cause all this trouble?
Mike gently nodded to his son and said, “You know What They Say? Be careful what you wish for it might come true?” “I have spent thirty years dreaming of the moment I would come face to face with my daughter again and now its here it’s a nightmare that I just want to go away.” Then looking directly at Linda.
MIKE: Look Linda, I know how you are feeling.
LINDA: No way, you can’t possibly begin to know how I’m feeling as I don’t even know.
MIKE: Neither do I really…
LINDA: What I do know is I don’t want you as my Dad. You are not my Dad!
MIKE: (shouting) And do you really think I would want an evil conniving cow for a daughter such as you? Like mother like daughter.
Linda burst into tears.
ADAM: Dad please don’t.
Then Linda’s attention was drawn to the broken pieces of glass on the floor. She slowly picked one up and looked at it.
LINDA: Shattered pieces of glass, that’s how my life feels right now and it’s all YOUR fault.
MIKE: (more calmly) I know. Look when I found out last night, I felt as gutted about this as you do now. I never wanted you to feel the hurt I was feeling, the shock and the disgust … (he paused) it just makes me sick thinking about it. I would of never told you if it hadn’t been for you and Mark turning up like this.
LINDA: (shouting between her tears) That’s right turn the blame on to us. Nothing is ever Mike Baldwin’s fault is it? Our marriage ended, that wasn’t you fault oh no everything is always someone else’s? You ran off to Alma and left me to think you were having an affair without really telling me what was going on and that she was sick. Then you wandered why I jumped into bed with Harvey Rueben…
Mike hit her.
ADAM: Dad don’t.
LINDA: (now shrieking at top volume) It makes you feel sick? Never mind you. My life is ruined. I slept with my brother, I married my Dad? (she looked pleadingly at him).
MIKE: Just calm down will you. If there is one thing I cannot stand it is hysterical women and I never had you down as one before now.
LINDA: Calm down… (Linda put her hand to her mouth as she was beginning to feel queasy) …. I think I’m going to be sick.
Mike went to grab Linda as he thought she was going to faint.
LINDA (edging away from Mike, lifting up the piece of glass threateningly) Don’t you touch me, don’t you ever touch me!
Linda ran from the flat, tears streaming down her face, and retching all the while. Outside Mike’s front door Linda took a look at the piece of glass still in her hand. Clenching her fists she let it splinter into the palms of her hand.
Back inside the flat…
ADAM: Dad go after her. Mark’s gone you can’t let Linda go too?
Linda was still stood outside Mike’s front door watching the blood drifting through her fingers. It was all too much and finally she gave into the nausea and was sick just as Mike came out of the flat, closely followed by Adam.
MIKE: Look Linda come back in, you are in no fit state to go anywhere right now. We have much to talk about.
LINDA: You can’t be my Dad you just can’t?
With that Linda let the pieces of glass drop to the floor revealing her shredded hand to Mike and Adam. Then she ran into the street.
As Rita pulled into Mike’s street, she took her eyes off the road for a split second as Norris complained yet again they would miss the library if she didn’t hurry up.
At that precise second Linda was running straight into the road, not looking where she was going. All she could think about is the fact that her whole life had been one big lie and now she just wanted the earth to swallow her up.
“Look out” shouted Norris. But it was too late. Rita had run straight into Linda.
RITA: Oh my Lord.
Both Norris and Rita jumped out of the car.
NORRIS: Are my eyes deceiving me or is that Linda Baldwin?
RITA: Oh shurrup Norris and call an ambulance.
NORRIS: What is she doing here? Getting back with Mike? I thought he was marrying Penny though?
RITA: Norris just make the call will you.
Rita began to cry.
NORRIS: She’s not dead is she?
Rita kneeled down beside an injured Linda. Linda’s eyes were wide open and she lay motionless and blood was gushing out of her head.
RITA: Please Linda don’t be dead.
TO BE CONTINUED!

What a cliffhanger! Two brilliant, brilliant parts. The best so far. What a shocker! I'm guessing there is more to come though! Yep there is more. I'll post it in this thread though and modify the subject line, otherwise L&D is taking over a bit.

I meant more shockers there by the way! I was going to say something about posting all the threads together, but decided against it since I'd already forgotten to read this when the first of it was sent to me a while back, and didn't want to pee you off again!

I meant more shockers there by the way! I was going to say something about posting all the threads together, but decided against it since I'd already forgotten to read this when the first of it was sent to me a while back, and didn't want to pee you off again! You wouldn't of done. But I must admit I was going to put them all in one thread from the start but I think the first one had a lot of replies and being new to it all I got a bit confused that it might all get lost. I've emailed you now the first 6 parts of my Emmy one. To see if you think it is worthy of going on the Em boards. Then I mean it I give up with fanfic As to shocks, yes I think there are 2 or 3 more :-) There's the final twist yet which you wil find out in 13. It ends in 15 though so you are nearing the end of the boredom.

I won't be able to reply tonight about the Emmy story, but what I've read so far through PM's is brilliant. And I'd say you'll get smited quite a bit if you don't post it, both by me and your other fans!!! I really hope that you'll reconsider with your promise not to do anymore feedback. Look at all the brilliant responces you've gotten.

PART XII Written Sunday, 15 May 2005
Rita was still saying “Please don’t die” as Mike and Adam ran up to her side. Rita looked up “I didn’t see her she just ran out from nowhere” she pleaded crying.
NORRIS: Of course it wasn’t your fault the stupid girl ...
RITA: We all know whose fault it was don’t we? (she glared) Yours, you were distracting me
NORRIS: Oh now, I don’t think that is fair?
RITA: Norris, have you called an ambulance?
NORRIS: No…
RITA: Well why are you still here? I thought you were calling one?
ADAM: I’ll do it.
NORRIS: Good lad as I think I might of broken my hand (he clutches his hand as if he was in pain)
MIKE: Its no one’s fault, well perhaps mine.
NORRIS: (forgetting his hand) And why would that be?
RITA: Norris this isn’t the time? Look she’s not moving
MIKE: She was really upset. Adam and I saw everything, she just ran out. You wouldn’t of been able to stop in time Rita.
ADAM: (running back) the ambulance is on the way
MIKE: Did you tell them it was an emergency? She needs it now. Just look at her.
ADAM: I told them everything Dad.
NORRIS: I think there’s little need for an ambulance. If she isn’t dead she perhaps should be?
RITA: Whatever are you talking about?
NORRIS: Those eyes wide open like that looking vacantly. I once read that paramedics always go to the people not making any noise as they are normally the most injured. And when their eyes are wide open like that it is normally a sign of brain injury.
MIKE: This is all my fault.
Mike looked despairingly at Linda’s lifeless body as Penny pulled up in her car.
MIKE: Where the hell have you been, 6:30 I said and it is now gone 7:15
PENNY: Well I had to see someone? What’s going on here?
Penny looked down
PENNY: Oh my Linda? What is she doing here?
MIKE: Is that all you care about. A terrible accident has happened and you have to ask what she is doing here? I suppose I should be grateful you are acknowledging you know Linda.
PENNY: Of course I know Linda, she is your ex-wife.
Mike couldn’t believe how heartless Penny could be, even when faced with such a tragedy.
MIKE: Are you sure that is all she is?
PENNY: What do you mean Mike? (looking confused),
Mike thought for a minute, but right in the middle of the street wasn’t the place to have it out with her. Especially with Norris standing there paying attention to every word.
ADAM: You know exactly what Dad means, Penny?
MIKE: Leave it Adam
PENNY: No its okay, you might as well know. Linda is my niece but I didn’t ever know how to tell you.
Norris gasped? Mike just rolled his eyes. He couldn’t believe how cool she was being with her daughter dying and still being able to lie.
NORRIS: She is your niece? I can’t believe that you would be related to her? You seem so nice and cultured compared...
RITA: Norris for once in your life just shurrup will you?
NORRIS: My, have you seen the time, I am really going to miss the library now.
RITA: Well don’t let us stop you there is a bus stop round the corner.
NORRIS: No, I think I’ll wait for the ambulance if it is all the same my hand is really throbbing. (He starts to hold his hand again).
Rita rolled her eyes not for the first time tonight before looking back at Linda. Mike began to pace, “where on earth could the ambulance be” he was thinking
RITA: I don’t think she is breathing?
MIKE: Adam call “999” again.
ADAM: She can’t die, she just can’t.
The ambulance finally arrived with a police car. Rita was asked to accompany the police officers to the station as they had questions to ask her. Norris complained bitterly saying they couldn’t arrest Rita. So they arrested Norris for obstructing their enquiries. Penny chose to ride in the ambulance with Linda while Mike and Adam followed on behind in Mike’s car.
TO BE CONTINUED!
This was a brief interlude before the final twists and showdowns.

Wow! The 12th brilliant part in this story! You are definitley a way better fan fiction writer than me. I start something, and usually never finish it where as you get straight into the heartstopping, shocking action.

PART XIII
Mike and Penny sat in silence while Adam was trying to get a drink out of a vending machine. Mike didn’t think it was the right time to tell Penny he knew the truth, the whole truth! Even she must be feeling something that her only daughter was fighting for survival.
A doctor made his way through to the casualty waiting room where Adam, Mike and Penny were sitting.
DOCTOR: I have to tell you all now, it doesn’t look good. Linda’s lost a lot of blood and we are going to have to do a blood transfusion. Added to which we believe there is internal bleeding that we may not be able to stop,
MIKE: Well I’ll donate any blood you want. We all will (pointing to Adam and Penny)
PENNY: It might not be compatible
MIKE: (Hissing at her) Well we won’t know if we don’t try?
DOCTOR: There is also something else,
MIKE: What?
DOCTOR: We don’t know how severe but Linda has sustained brain damage and it could be fatal?
MIKE: Brain Damage? No!
In a state of shock Adam, Mike and Penny went to give blood samples so they could be tested. When they came back they found Rita waiting for them.
MIKE: Rita what are you doing here?
RITA: The police have let me out on police bail pending further enquiries. Norris is going to have to spend the night in the cells for lipping them though.
MIKE: Well nice of you to come back and show you care
RITA: I just had to come here and see if Linda was okay? I feel dreadful about it all.
PENNY: So you should, you may well have killed her yet.
MIKE: Penny, Adam’s hungry
ADAM: No I’m not I couldn’t eat anything with Linda as she is
MIKE: You must keep up your strength son, as must you Penny. Go to that McDonalds I saw on the corner near here.
Something told Penny not to argue with Mike and besides she hated hospitals and could do with the fresh air.
MIKE: Oh bring me back a root beer and some French fries. I like theirs.
As Penny and Adam left Mike turned his attention to Rita.
RITA: I didn’t put you down as eating and drinking that sort of thing.
MIKE: You would be surprised what worry and grief does to you.
Mike sat down besides Rita
MIKE: We’ve known each other many years haven’t we Rita?
RITA: Yes, I suppose we have.
MIKE: I want you to believe me when I say you are not to blame for any of this and I will be telling the police so.
RITA: That is very sweet of you to say so Mike but I still …
MIKE: Shush, no, I have something to tell you, and I know I can trust you.
Mike proceeded to tell Rita the whole story from start to finish. When he had finished she looked at him stunned before giving him a comforting hug, witnessed by a returning Penny.
Fuming, Penny darted behind a corner before either Rita or Mike could see her? She wanted to pick her moment and find out exactly what they were talking about for Rita to warrant giving Mike a hug.
“Mike looked upset”, Penny thought. “He couldn’t still have feelings for Linda could he?” If so, Penny would switch the life machine off herself. Penny was also worried that “Mike was having an affair with Rita?” All these thoughts spun around a jealous Penny’s head. However she didn’t have time to spy on Mike and Rita for long before Adam had joined her side.
ADAM: There’s a porter saying you must move your car?
PENNY: What?
ADAM: Your car it is in the way of an ambulance entrance and you have to move it.
Penny stormed off in a huff while Adam went to join Mike and Rita.
MIKE: Hey son. You know you should go home there’s nothing you can do here and I think it is going to be a long night.
ADAM: I don’t want to, not until I know Linda is alright.
DOCTOR: Mr Baldwin, there is a problem. Linda’s blood group is very rare.
MIKE: Well I’m her Dad so surely my blood is okay for her and her mother will be back in a moment?
DOCTOR: (looking puzzled) You are her father? And her mother is?
MIKE: Yes I am and Mrs King is her mother. And besides how rare can Linda’s blood be? Mine is just standard “O” and I thought that was the most common.
DOCTOR: Mr Baldwin, Linda’s is AB Negative, Mrs King’s is “A” and yours as you say is “O” which means you can’t possibly be Linda’s father.
TO BE CONTINUED!
AUTHOR’S NOTE: My motives behind this story were to explore the notion of how one person’s lie has the potential to destroy so many other peoples’ lives. Also how possessive love can be destructive (i.e. Penny’s for Mike and Mike’s for his children).
So what will Mike do now? Will Linda survive and where does Rita fit into all of this – if at all?
You didn't really think I could do a Daran Little or a Kieran Roberts did you? I shudder, cringe and feel sick at the very notion of someone marrying their own father and sleeping with their brother - even if it was in pure ignorance.
In the last year I’ve read a news article of a poor couple in Germany who were about to get married and then they found out they were in fact half-brother and half-sister. I did also hear recently of a father and daughter living quite happily together with their own child in full knowledge of their incest. So yes I slightly got the idea from both these things, coupled with Coronation Street introducing Penny's neighbour Janice Sykes. However when I started writing this story down, I knew from the start Linda WOULD NOT be Mike's daughter.
Just as there are suggestions all the way through that Linda is Mike's daughter, there are also subtle hints going right back to part one that Penny was in fact concealing an even bigger secret that not even Mike knew. To find out what exactly you will have to continue reading.
Mike Baldwin is the type of man who could have any number of children scattered all over the place. He is also the type that before DNA, any scheming woman could get away with claiming he fathered their child.
Penny's motives, who knows that is up to the individual reader as she is full of contradictions all the way through. Is she really wicked? Probably not, she is a woman consumed with obsessed love for Mike and she will do anything to keep that love. She is also, perhaps, a bit shallow. After all Pauline Flemming plays her with very little depth.
Okay there is only two parts to go and so we are drawing to a close. Yes there is a few more shocks and surprises to come. However I think the biggest shock you have just read.
Well I hope you have been enjoying this story and will like the outcome.

Thank you, you are very kind but No I am not you are very good and I'm afraid to say this will be a one off. I don't really follow Corrie enough to know about it anymore. I only like the Baldwins now. I just wanted Mike to have a happy ending. Whether he does or not is quite another matter. I am in the middle of an Em fanfic that involves every single character bar about 2.

That, I have to admit, didn't come as too much of a surprise but I thought that it would turn out that Penny had swapped the babies or something, so she could have her daughter back. But when she got her daughter back, she decided that she couldn't keep her and had sent her off to somewhere like an orphanage or a convent! How wrong was I? Brilliant again, and glad that there will be both an Emmy fanfic and a sequel to this story as well.

But when she got her daughter back, she decided that she couldn't keep her and had sent her off to somewhere like an orphanage or a convent! How wrong was I? I did keep dropping hints didn't I? After all I was very concerned people would stop reading early on if they thought Mike had married his daughter and she bedded her brother. That's why I kept saying don't judge until part 13. As to all those other ideas that would of been good but more twists would of meant more parts and we would be here to next Christmas. By the time I got to part 13 I just wanted it wrapped up if that makes sense. Hope you weren't too disappointed Eithne. Now any guesses on who the father really is?

I was far, far from disappointed. I'm guessing the father is... Norris? Or maybe Ken? Or even Ray Sykes? After all Penny really does like him doesn't she?

It's a goody, Eithne. I spent 2 1/2 hours tonight correcting my mistakes in the sequel ready for going up when this has finished, which is nowhere near as good as Lane's.

PART XIV
MIKE: What are you saying? Of course I’m Linda’s father?
The doctor sadly shook his head.
RITA: AB negative you say? I’m that?
DOCTOR: Are you? Well come with me. We have a small amount in reserve but we could do with more. First however we will need to ask you some questions
RITA: Such as
DOCTOR: Are you likely to be HIV positive, those sort of things.
Rita and the Doctor disappeared into a room leaving poor Mike and Adam speechless
MIKE: The bitch! For 30 years she told me I was the father of her child. She let me believe for a whole lifetime I had a daughter and she must of known what it meant to me?
ADAM: Perhaps you are still Linda’s dad and the doctor is wrong?
MIKE: I doubt it, anyway I just don’t know what to believe. Poor Linda, no one deserves this.
ADAM: What are you going to do Dad?
MIKE: We can’t abandon Linda especially as I started all of this, but right now I just can’t face Penny, let’s go outside for a while.
Mike and Adam got up to leave the waiting area just as Penny came back. A queasy Rita came out of the consultant room having given two pints of blood. She ran straight into Penny.
PENNY: Hey you I want a word
RITA: What’s a matter Penny?
PENNY: You know very well
RITA: I know, I’m very sorry about Linda
PENNY: Never mind Linda, you stay away from my boyfriend, you hear me?
Rita looked in a state of shock from Penny’s verbal attack. As the commotion continued Mike and Adam turned back to see what all the fuss was about just as Penny was about to strike Rita.
MIKE: Wait here Adam. (bellowing) Penny!
PENNY: Oh Mike, I was just asking Rita where you were?
MIKE: Oh don’t come that with me. I know everything PEN-NY!
PENNY: What are you talking about Mike?
Mike grabbed Penny by the throat
PENNY: Calm down Mike. So what if Linda is my niece. I should of told you, okay I’m sorry.
MIKE: (loosening his grip on Penny’s throat) I know Linda is supposed to be my daughter.
PENNY: What on earth are you talking about?
MIKE: Except she isn’t is she?
PENNY: Have you gone quite mad?
MIKE: I know Penny don’t deny it. I came to King’s Road last night and heard you and Ray Sykes talking. As a result of what I heard, Linda is in there fighting for her life, and I have gone through 24 hours of hell thinking I married my daughter!
PENNY: Oh (she looked down guilt-ridden). Well if you know the truth then you must realise why I never wanted you to find out that Linda was your daughter. For this very reason.
MIKE: Except she isn’t my daughter is she? I did not father your child. Yet another of your lies. Linda is laying there for nothing? All because of one big lie!
PENNY: Of course Linda is your daughter.
MIKE: No she is not. You have been lying to me for 30 years. You let me believe I fathered a child that wasn’t mine. You even let me hold her as a baby. I thought Linda was an evil cow but she has nothing on you? Poor Linda, she didn’t stand a chance did she to turn out okay with you as her mother and the Sykes bringing her up.
PENNY: You are being ridiculous. Are you getting Alzheimer’s or something? I didn’t lie to you. She is your daughter and when she gets better we can put the past behind us and start again and be a proper family – You and I, Adam, Linda and Mark.
Mike tightened his grip on Penny’s neck again and she began to choke. Adam came running up to them.
ADAM: Dad let go
RITA: Mike she isn’t worth it.
MIKE: The blood tests tell a different story. Furthermore she may not get better?
Mike let go of Penny’s neck. Penny just looked at him and then burst into tears.
MIKE: Oh save the crocodile tears will you. I’m not falling for them, not this time.
PENNY: Mike you have to believe me, you were the only man in my life at that time in London. You have to be her father?
MIKE: Then explain the blood tests? Are you calling the doctor a liar?
PENNY: Okay! You were the only man in London, but, there was someone else now I think about it. Albeit it was very brief. Remember two or three months before Christmas I went back to visit my parents for a week? Well while there I went to the Weatherfield Arms one night and I met Ken Barlow!
ADAM: What my granddad?
PENNY: Yes your precious granddad (she glared at Adam). He was very drunk and we had a one night stand. He didn’t ever recognise me years later and I doubt he even remembers the night.
MIKE: You slut
PENNY: Honestly Mike you have to believe me, it was just the one night with him? You and me were at it for months. I just assumed you were her father.
“You whore” came a male voice from behind them. Mike and Penny turned to see Ray Sykes standing there.
RAY: You don’t want to believe a word she says Baldwin. She was putting it around with anyone she could long before she even moved to London, just to earn herself some extra cash.
PENNY: I don’t remember you ever complaining.
RITA: You slept with your own sister’s husband and for money too?
RAY: Eve’s parents always looked down their noses at Eve and me. However if they had only known the truth about their precious Penelope?
PENNY: Mike honestly I thought Linda was yours, you have to believe me?
MIKE: Oh change the record and tell us who Linda’s father really is?
PENNY: It must be Ken Barlow.
MIKE: Just go Penny, get as far away from here as possible, I never want to see you again.
PENNY: I’m not going anywhere my daughter is possibly dying.
RAY: Oh yes you are. The last person Linda needs in her life is you.
Ray grabbed Penny by the hair, for it all to come off revealing it was a wig and she was totally bald.
MIKE: Oh yet another lie. You told me you were a red head. (he chuckled)
Penny screamed and ran out of the hospital.
As night turned into day, a nurse appeared to give Mike, Rita, Adam and Ray Sykes news of Linda. All braced themselves for the worst.
TO BE CONCLUDED IN PART 15

Being as most of the Weatherfield males spread their seeds around further than 5 tornadoes, it`s anybodys guess right now. ;D I don`t know why, but I`m guessing the daddy is either Frank Barlow, Kens dad..or even possibly Mike Baldwins dad Frankie.

I'm sure it is as good. I'm really looking forward to seeing your style of fanfic, as everyone seems to have their own unique style. I do them different ways. There's dialogue with narration between scenes (which I'm much better at), the way CorrieGirl does hers (like I did with the Reet's Secret one) or the way I'm doing it this time. But while Lane's is full of enough shocks to give Mike numerous heart attacks, mine's more picking up the pieces, going round in circles and arguing - just like Corrie. LOL! Patsy

Believe it or not I didn't know who the father was going to be myself. Originally I thought Ray Sykes or Preston King after all of that or someone not even connected to the story.
