Over the years in Corrie, there have been loads of characters that have either been killed off never to return. And then there are characters that ought to come back, but never have yet.
Characters (in my opinion) that should never have been killed off are..... Des Barnes Dennis Stringer Alma Baldwin Maxine Peacock Judy Mallet
Characters that should never have gotten the axe and ought to return (also in my opinion) are..
Harry Flagg He and Eileen would`ve been great together - whether just pals or married. There was so much more potential in this character that given the right storylines would have been excellent.
Tricia and Jamie Armstrong (and Brad, Terrys son).I always liked Tricia, she was a feisty woman and I thought a younger version of Elsie Tanner. The lad who played her son Jamie was a terrific actor too. He and Jack Duckworth got on like a house on fire...definate onscreen chemistry.
Gary Mallet. Another character I really liked. An a single father which was very rare then. Again, a lot of potential.

Good choice, CG.
I also liked Mavis and Derek, both together and seperately.
As a child I have a dim recollection of Ray Langton, then saw him again in some of the old DVDs and he seemed a really good character; bringing him back recently to die just to further Tracey's reputation as the most selfish character ever was a waste of talent. He could have been better employed than that.
Shame about the oldies - but they do have a tendency to die don't they? Some characters like Elsie Tanner, Albert Tatlock, Phylliss Pearce, Stan Ogden etc. would be fantastic to have back but they would be very, very old now had they lived, and it would be scandalous to re-cast the actors now.
Dennis Stringer was great - I had a big crush on him!

I couldn`t agree more PQ (except for Mavis..liked Derek though)
It seems to me that in most soaps (not just Corrie) that whenever an actor chooses to leave, the producer gets into a snit and kills the character off. To 'teach them a lesson' I suppose. And then most soaps kill this character off to gain one episode of higher figures. Is it really worth it though because then we`re left without this popular character. Tiffany Mitchell from EE springs to mind there. She was a brilliant character.

I really liked Mavis but was never a huge fan of Derek, so much preferred Mavis on her own. Mave and Reet were the best double act and no man either of them has been paired with before or since (Norris included!) has been as good.
However because Derek was axed and killed off it meant tha Thelma decided to leave which was a shame.

Maud Grimes was good, too.

Was she forced to leave through ill health though?

I would guess yes. Ditto with Percy Sugden and Philys Pearce. Such great characters weren`t they

And they replace great characters with teenyboppers straight from the Epping Forest School of Acting to get kids watching who won't anyway.

No she wasnt axed, but I agree she was brilliant. My fave Corrie character of all time.
They should never have axed Derek either as that meant Thelma quit as Mave

Mine too Jez... you may notice that from my avator and banner ;D The pairing of Dennis Stringer and Janice Battersby was a massive mistake. Dennis and Eileen were perfect together. They could`ve been the next Stan/Hilda or Jack/Vera

Agreed, Jack and Vera are good but have never been as good as Stan and Hilda IMO.

No one can be as good as Stan and Hilda. Those characters back then were unique. They've tried to do 'The New....' but they are a pale imitation.

But they wrote her like Elsie as she was always chasing the men. Some of the papers said Denise was the new Elsie yet she was nothing like her.

There were a lot chasing men. Look at that tart Rita Littlewood. LOL! Bet was just another loser in love. As she came in long before Pat Phoenix quit the first time she could hardly be touted as 'The New Elsie'. I remember that though about Denise which was what I was thinking of.

Didn`t the woman who played Denise Osbourne (her real name escapes me) play Elsie Tanner in a one off drama?
