From the Sun online (where else lol) Article with pics here www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/tv/soaps/article1028289.eceIs Kim Crowther completely insane? The old `uns are the heart and soul of Corrie. Axe legends like Emily, Blanche, Reet or God forbid Ken and you`ve got a fourth rate Hollyoaks at best. At worst, they may as well put up a closed sign in t`street because it won`t last til its 50 if that`s the case

That's what Brian Park thought when he brought in so many planks. This is probably a rumour. It's still doing well in the ratings and beating EE for some reason so doesn't need a boost.

I was just reading some ageist comments on that site. Why don't some people realise that in real life people can live in the same place their entire lives or most of it? New blood comes and goes while the rest stay put. The soaps aren't much different except we know it's either the producer's choice whether they stay or theirs for the work/cash.

I agree that the older stars should earn their money, instead of getting paid a fortune to do two lines a week, but the solution is to PUT THEM TO WORK. Give them storylines, and stop concentrating on the crumpet like Maria, Carla etc.

That's what I always say. The likes of Barbara Knox, Eileen Derbyshire etc don't deserve the amount they get paid considering the lack they do. Bill Roache can get away with it since he was thrust into storylines all the whole KF was there. Now he's glorified extra like the rest.

It works beautifully in Emmerdale with the more senior cast, and with the right scripts Corrie writers should not let the more senior characters disappear from the screen to make room for the younger ones. That isn`t what Corrie is about. In the early days the older cast were featured more than the youngers ones, and that`s what made Corrie a joy to watch. Where is Emily these days? I love her character and she should be featured a lot more.

I agree and used to love the way their older characters (and in EE) aren't sidelined or even pigeonholed to act with the same characters.

Im glad this storyline has been denied - I would hate it if a lot of the long term cast who have been there 20+ years left.
Also Patsy ever thought the reason Corrie does well in the ratings is because some people myself included actually still enjoy it.

Well a certain redhead has often threatened to if the eps increased so we've had years of broken promises. Most of it is hype so fairweather's watch. We don't know the exact figures because you can't really judge by 5000 people. For all we know only 2 million could be watching any of the soaps. Patsy

This story does the rounds every time someone new takes over at one of the soaps, especially the ITV ones. And Anita Turner hasn't really done a major axing at Emmerdale - just getting rid of two characters to my knowledge, not four like the article claims. Patsy: As for the ratings it is clearly the best system we have at the moment and as there's no viable alternative we've got no choice to believe the ratings it throws up. Plus random sampling can generally be fairly accurate. And hey, how do we know the soaps aren't getting 20 million - nevermind your 2 million!!! Most people I know watch them at least on an irregular basis if not a regular one at least. And then there are households where more than one person is watching as well but that still only counts as one viewer doesn't it?

LOL! I'd be surprised if they're getting 20 million. No. The people who have the system put in how many people are watching that particular programme then it gets multiplied to work out how many millions are supposedly viewing. It's usually on one TV though so doesn't include anyone who may be watching in another room. In this digital and technologically advanced age there must be a better way of doing it because this is past it. It's just like these polls in the paper when they claim so many percent say this and they only ask about 50 people. So 75% could say something like Labour are the best when 70% of those asked could be Labour supporters. 5000 people don't represent the 60 million in the UK.

I agree there could be a better system. Maybe on all these digital boxes or tv sets they could have something. At least it would give a better idea. Generally they know when a show is a flop though e.g. Rock Rivals on ITV1 is a flop as its getting quite low figures I think.
Eithne I agree - the majority of people I know watch at least 1 soap.

It's always been a regional thing too. People around here watched Corrie and Crossroads more than EE in the 80s at least yet the bods at Granada (like that pillock Park) reckoned only northern old grannies watched during that time and later. They must know the regional demographic and if they don't then it's an even worse system. We don't even know where these boxes are. We don't know if people just leave it on because they have nothing else to watch between programmes.
They go by audience share more than ratings. But again, how do they know? Rock Rivals may have more people watching that BARB says.

Im glad this storyline has been denied - I would hate it if a lot of the long term cast who have been there 20+ years left. Me too Jez, the thought Corrie being filled with teenage 'David Platt' types would have me very rapidly reaching for the remote and off button.!

Well if any of you have seen Rock Rivals then you will understand why its a flop. But I get what you are saying!
Most people I know watch at least one soap as I said, but a lot of them dip in and out and watch if they can. I can be like that sometimes - I often miss Emmerdale or Hollyoaks. I try and catch Neighbours every day and always make sure I see Corrie even if I have to tape it. There are 2 many episodes and people have lives so cant always commit to watching every episode.
LOL Sooty! Its some of the younger characters that need to be axed not the oldies.

LOL! When I was growing up I always preferred the older characters to younger ones. Even with the likes of slapper Elsie Tanner, she at least was well-rounded and her storylines didn't entirely involve shagging.

If I listed my favourite characters they would all be older ones right up until I stopped watching. They were better written for in those days too. Not just glorified extras.

Me too, although when I was growing up I did like the younger ones like Sally, Jenny, Kevin and Curly too. The younger ones today are mostly boring, apart from Becky and Tina.

From the Daily Mirror:
Veterans of Corrie 'are safe' By Brian Roberts 22/04/2008
The new boss at Coronation Street yesterday opened her door to older stars to assure them their futures are safe.
Kim Crowther swept aside suggestions that any veteran performers were for the chop as she took over the helm of Britain's longest-running soap.
The new producer put up a personal notice inviting everyone in to see her to discuss future storylines.
At first, some actors feared it could be bad news. But the chats were all about reassuring them that they still had a place in the cast.
A Corrie insider said: "There have been rumours that the older stars may be in line for the chop. But that couldn't be further from the truth.
"Kim is steeped in the history of the Street and believes the old-guard artists are crucial to the show.
"She believes the likes of Bill Roache (Ken Barlow) Barbara Knox (Rita Sullivan) and Eileen Derbyshire (Emily Bishop) are firm favourites with the viewers."
