I prefered the rougue Dennis to the 'comical' Dennis. It`s about time Dennis Tanner was brought back...whether it`s the same actor if he`s still alive or someone new. Surely he can`t still be in prison can he.

Bring back Percy Sugden

Oh I wish. I named our cat Percy as he`s such a miserable sod - just like his namesake. Our Percy is 13 now and age hasn`t mellowed him one bit.

Percy and Norris. Ooh er. Can you imagine it? Tales of cooking beans under gunfire vying with tales of, er.... how many freebie pens he's collected. As for nosiness, they'll both put Hilda to shame! Ah love's young dream. Patsy

Last I heard Philip Lowrie was voiceovering 15 To 1 but that was years back. Think he's still alive. No reports of Dennis dying in the press.

Yes they should bring Dennis back, he should be the same age as Ken.

There was a rumour a while back about the Tanners returning but I think it only referred to Linda who was, of course, a Cheveski as would be her kids and grandchildren.
If Jill Summers wasn't dead I'd love to see Phyllis make a comeback. The Blanche of her day but with a conscience. LOL!

I wonder if Ken ever lusted after Elsie in the 1960`s? Ken was quite a rogue himself in those days. Maybe the writers considered it ;D

I would imagine most young men in 60's Weatherfield lusted after Elsie Tanner.
Mind you Ken didn't have a lot of time..he went through girlfriends like wildfire lol

I remember those rumours about the Tanners/Cheveski's coming back. That would be good. Paul Cheveski would be in his 40s now and probabaly married with kids. Linda could even come back. I always liked her.
Yes Patsy I would have loved Phyllis to come back too - another fantastic character!

I loved Phyliss too...she didn't really have a farewell storyline did she..?..I seem to remember she just faded off the scene..correct me if I am wrong
Am i correct in thinking that this would be the top 14 longest serving character list..
1. Ken-1960 2. Emily-1961 3. Rita (so she claims lol)-1964 4. Betty-1969 5. Deirdre-1972 6. Gail-1974 7. Blanche-1974 8. Jack-1979 9. Audrey-1979 10.Kevin-1983 11.Bill-1984 12.Sally-1986 13.Liz-1989 14.Steve-1989
have I missed anyone out...I sort of lose the plot once the 90's kick in

LOL Nick! Bet he had his dreams though. If you know what I mean. Jez, this is the thing. The older characters of yesteryear are fondly remembered - even Percy Sugden. They were well written, rounded characters who all had their idiosyncrasies and we either loved them or loved to hate them. Compare today's older characters (which of course were younger then) and see how their writing has gone downhill over the years. It's no wonder really so many people writing to the likes of Teletext call for the old ones to be axed. They just aren't the same and will only really be remembered due to being it in so long. We can pluck names from our memory because they remained there. These won't with the newer viewers. To them they're just old gits who should be sacked to make way for totty who probably can't act. Shame really. Patsy

Yes thats correct Nick, although Blanche was out of it as a regular character for over 20 years and Bill for years and years as well. Also Reet did 1 ep in 1964 but joined properly in 1972.

I never count Reet's 1964 because it was one episode and she got lucky being cast again 8 years later and they made that character the same as the other one she'd played. It's like saying Paul McGann was the Doctor for 9 years. LOL!
Yes it was very sad. Bit like Maud Grimes, although I never really took to her. Just went to the retirement place and that was it after a few weeks.
Ken, Reet, Betty and Emily have just grown old in it but none are a patch on what they used to be. Mind you Emily always was a bit boring but at least was more interesting to watch.

They can't even come up with new ideas for the younger ones so what hope for the older characters? It's a shame. Originally these were as much part of the show's backbone as younger characters bit somewhere along the way they've been pushed out in favour of tweenies.

Couldn't agree more. If Corrie began today there'd be no place for Ena, Minnie and Martha.
