From Teletext:
Emmerdale 'drink problem' A month-long study into drinking habits on the soap Emmerdale has shown all 37 characters had at least one drink during a typical episode.
Derby University researchers studied the drinking behaviour of all the adult characters - and 17 units of booze were downed on average in each programme.
A third of Emmerdale's residents would be classified as "depressed drinkers" by Department of Health guidelines.

Right so Gabby Thomas is on the gin, huh? LOL! What a load of old twaddle. There are more than 37 characters and don't these saddos have better things to do with their time? They're being paid for this? Withdraw funding!

Is it any wonder they all drink living in a village like that.
I think I would be a depressed drinker if I lived in any of the soaps....If I lived long enough that is. ;D

Something my eldest daughter said when she saw this which I thought was a valid point in fairness to her, is that soaps glamourise alcohol consumption especially when binge drinking and the amounts consumed on average is rising rapidly. Indeed, all soaps have the pub as the main focal point with characters regularly drinking.
