From the Sun:
Exclusive Street battleaxe saved from axe By JEN BLACKBURN
Published: Today CORRIE battleaxe Blanche Hunt has been saved after a plan to give her the chop.
Producers were writing a storyline which would see the shrew’s exit through illness.
But after a top-level meeting, it was felt the character still had “a lot to give”. Viewers will see Deirdre Barlow’s mum, played by Maggie Jones, 74, feel faint around New Year.
An insider on the ITV1 soap said: “It has been seriously considered and discussed at our latest forward planning meeting that the character of Blanche should be killed off. But we appreciate she’s a great old, grumpy character and the chemistry between Blanche the Barlow clan and the other street regulars is superb so we felt we had to keep her.”
The character was first played by Patricia Cutts in the summer of 1974 — but the actress committed suicide after two episodes. Maggie stepped in to replace her for four years. She briefly returned in 1981 and 1996 before becoming a Weatherfield regular again in 1998.
Maggie lives in London but stays in a luxury hotel near the Manchester studios while filming.
She recently suffered a fall and was off work for several weeks with knee problems — forcing a hurried re-write.

That would have been a complete disaster!
Surely Blanche is one of the only characters worth watching even if the rest of the show is cr@p?
She doesn't need major storylines - just keep feeding her the brilliant one-liners, and I'll be more than happy!

Well said BC...they must have been mad to even contemplate it....the same when they killed off Mike Baldwin instead of sending him off to Spain..he could have come back for visits then...where as he can't now

I'm glad she's staying - if they're looking at culling pointless characters they should write out Audrey, Janice and Ashley for a start.

Wonder if it was Kim Crowther's idea? Remember how when she took over rumours were rife she would axe older characters. If this was The Blanche Show I doubt I'd have ever stopped watching.

Those Corrie bosses are completely bonkers. It really makes me wonder if those who decide who gets the chop even watch Corrie. I somehow doubt it. They obviously don`t read any forums because if they did prawn would be long gone.

I think they do but don't care what viewers think. Remember Shelley and Charlie? People were bored so they kept it going even though they knew how the public felt.

I'm glad she is staying. Blanche is a great character, Maggie plays her brilliantly. The way she delivers her lines is unbelievable.

I cant believe they would even consider axing her - she is one of the best characters in the show.
