From DSITV has abandoned plans to move its Manchester operations, including the Coronation Street set, to the MediaCity UK development in Salford. The broadcaster had planned to join the BBC at the new development, which is scheduled to open in 2011. Instead, ITV will remain at its current base on Quay Street in Manchester, which was opened as a studio complex for ITV franchisee Granada in the 1960s. "Negotiations with the Peel Group over the possible move of ITV's Manchester operation to MediaCity in Salford were terminated by ITV this week after the developer dramatically scaled back its financial commitment to the ITV element of the project," ITV said. "As a result we will remain at our Quay Street base for the foreseeable future." The decision means that ITV's complex on Quay Street will become the home of shows displaced by the closure of the former Yorkshire Television studios in Leeds, including Channel 4 quiz staple Countdown. I should imagine moving the street cobble by cobble would have been a total nightmare !

Yep and it was a stupid, money wasting idea anyway. What the hell is wrong with these people? You do not make cuts by throwing the stuff away on pointless exercises. Patsy

The current studio's in Salford. This would be just nearer the canal than they are already.

Well it all comes under Greater Manchester anyway - id have been a lot more annoyed if they had moved to somewhere like Leeds.

I hate all these 'Greater' things. Like Greater London which swallowed up parts of Kent and Essex but they're still in their original counties.
LOL! Corrie isn't relevant in today's society anyway. Let me explain before you jump down my throat. LOL! In the 80s it was accused of living in its own world compared to the gritty soaps. I don't believe it was because, like Crossroads, it did issues subtlely rather than rammed down the throat and instantly forgotten when it was over. Corrie still reflected the times and often discussed them in the scripts. However it no longer does and hasn't for a long time. Now there's all these problems in the world, barely anyone is affected. The factory would have been struggling under Mike Baldwin, not doing booming business. Ditto the corner shop with everyone going to the supermarket because it was cheaper. EE is partly guilty of the same thing (not mentioning Emmerdale because that's always been in a world of its own) while still mentioning tightening of belts, people sinking in debt, extortionate house prices etc. Just like Corrie, the 'poor' locals can still afford to go to the caff and pub, have expensive gizmos, the latest phones and the pensioners are minted. EE is filmed in Hertfordshire so it wouldn't matter whether Corrie was in Manchester or Abu Dhabi as long as the set's there. Neither are as relevant as they were. They've become MORE La La Land than they used to be with less characters and situations the viewing public can relate to.

Well Manchester used to be in the county of Lancashire didnt it? Now its a county of its own under Greater Manchester which includes Stockport, Bolton, Wigan, Rochdale, Bury, Oldham and others as well as the city centre itself.
Although it doesnt really matter where its filmed its nice that it is in Manchester and so many actors are northern.

The same as London, which is what I was getting at. Barking isn't London, it's Essex. Ashford isn't London, it's Kent. It just gobbles up areas nothing to do with them like boundary changes. And if these are 'Greater', where the lesser? LOL!
Many of the cast throughout have been southern or even from Yorkshire rather than Lancashire. I think they've gone back to hiring more local actors but there's still a lot who aren't.

Yes a lot from Yorkshire - Liz Dawn and Lynne Perrie for example. Not that far to travel. Down south would be more difficult and some quit like Bradley Walsh did.

Depends really because many take some sort of accommodation up there or relocate the family if they're in it a while.

If they relocate the set they will probably have more room to add bits to it..it will get bigger and bigger

Since ITV are skint this is a terrible waste of resources which should be going into decent programme making.
