Outside Edge Theatre Royal, Winchester
MIDDLE England really is a funny Place. Cricket on a warm summer's day - two teams dressed in white - the treat of rain not far away, the scene could not be more typically English.
And the drama, well it's just not cricket - or perhaps it is? Richard Harris' play Outside Edge explores the colourful world of a cricket team and all its varied players.
Set in the 1970s, the play gives a light-hearted insight into the titillations of middle England and man's vain attempt to separate himself from his other half for a Saturday afternoon knockabout.
A star cast, including Craig Fairbass - of Dan Sullivan in EastEnders fame - as the hapless Bob, manages to deliver an upbeat tempo to keep the audiences amused.
Directed by Ian thingyens the play is riddled with sexual tension and the comic timing is faultless.
Anita Graham is brilliant as the forceful Maggie while Frazer Hines - formerly Joe Sugden in Emmerdale - maintains the mischievous Dennis superbly.
From the dominated Kevin (Ian Swann) to the tottering Sharon (Claire Marlowe), there really are no straight bats about Outside Edge.
Good summer's entertainment. Runs until Saturday, July 17.
