Should Den have been killed? No I don't think so. And I'll tell you why.
There was a lot of fanfare and publicity on his return to the show, and the first episodes were marvellous. Here was an older and wiser Den, set to wrest the Queen Vic from the Mitchells and get rid of that dreadful family and put the Watts behind the bar again.
Then Leslie Grantham does that thing on a webcam which the papers gleefully take up and run and run with. He apologises profusely, makes a donation to charity and the BBC says that the incident is closed. His punishment will be suspension from the show for a few months and then that will be that. Case Closed.
Except that it isn't. The scriptwriters begin to make him into a vicious selfish schemer again, promptly undoing how he'd been established over the previous few months. Other cast members take the opportunity to make a bit of money by talking to the press and saying that everyone now shuns Mr Grantham in the canteen and off set etc.
Leslie remains silent with dignity. No chat show, no paper, no gossip weekly, not even the Radio Times, gives him the chance to tell his side of the story. And then fed up, he decides to leave for good. The actresses who play Sam, Chrissie, and Zoe, take the opportunity to make some money by commenting about their conspiracy to kill Den, to anyone or any paper that will let them. Not a single word from Leslie makes the papers. And on the day of the body being dug up in the Queen Vic, it remains the same. Not a word from the man himself.
What an ignoble end for the man who made the show, and without whom it could well not have lasted its first year.
The production team should come clean and announce their true intentions eg that the show will be renamed 'The Mitchells' and be about that bullying gangster family. From time to time other Walford residents MAY get a lookin if Peggy or Phil or Grant feel generous. But don't hold your breath.
If it happened to Den, it could happen to anyone. A sudden change of character, thanks to the scriptwriters, successive nasty deeds, and a blackout on yourself from all of the press.
If it had been up to me Den would have kept hold of the Vic, and that dreadful story about him sleepiing with Zoe (which she asked him to do, remember) would not have happened.
And I would have brought back David Wicks, and Wicksy, not the Mitchells. And paid Michelle Ryan whatever she asked for to keep her in the show.
