Part 1
Deep in the vortex, a tall blue box with a flashing light on top, spun its way towards its next destination. Inside a bright room stood a hexagonal mushroom, a clear column - coloured lights inside - rose and fell, deep circular indentations covered the walls. Sitting on the floor, back against the wall was a young round-faced girl with long, dark hair and a leather jacket covered in badges. Her loud sigh interrupted the deep thoughts of a small small in cream coloured trousers and a question mark tank top.
DOCTOR----Ace! ACE----------How much longer are we gonna be in here, Professor? DOCTOR----As long as it takes to find out where that beeping is coming from. Why don't you find something to occupy yourself until then. ACE----------Like read a book? DOCTOR----What a good idea. ACE----------Boooring Professor. DOCTOR----Well, I'm sure you'll find something to occupy yourself until then. ACE----------Yeah (stands). Your right. DOCTOR----Great. ACE----------I know exactly what I'll do. DOCTOR----And what might that be? ACE----------Make some more nitro-nine. Thanks Professor (leaves). DOCTOR----Good idea. What?! Ace!
The console showered the Doctor in sparks. He cursed in High Gallifreyan as the lights went out and the Tardis crashed, sending the Doctor and Ace flying. Ace fumbled along the walls until she found the door to the console room. She could see nothing but heard the Doctor muttering in a strange language.
ACE----------What's going on Professor? DOCTOR----If I knew that Ace, do you really think I'd just be sitting here? ACE----------Sitting where? DOCTOR----On the floor! ACE----------Well I didn't think it was on the ceiling. Do you know where we are? DOCTOR----Don't ask such ridiculous questions Ace. ACE----------Should I try and open the doors? DOCTOR----(sighs) Why not? Probably won't make any difference though. ACE----------Don't be such a pessimist, Professor. DOCTOR----Ace, when you've lived over 1000 years, you tend to realise things aren't always as simple as you'd like them to be. ACE----------Knickers!
Ace bounded across the room, hoping she was heading for the console and promptly fell over the Doctor.
DOCTOR----Be careful! ACE----------It ain't my fault, Professor. You turned the lights out. DOCTOR----I did not! Oh, what's the use? It's probably some external interference anyway. It usually is. I'm sorry Ace. ACE----------That's okay. DOCTOR----Do you forgive me for being so bad tempered? ACE----------No. DOCTOR----What? ACE----------If I could see your mug, I'd hit it. DOCTOR----You don't mean that. ACE----------Nah, course not. Now, if it was the Master or that pillock with the bird on his head.... DOCTOR----I couldn't agree more. In fact, after what they did to me- ACE----------And me! DOCTOR----Us on Gallifrey, I'd join you. Hey. ACE----------What? DOCTOR----You don't think it's the Black Guardian wreaking his revenge? ACE----------There's an 'orrible thought. DOCTOR----Nah. The White Guardian would have forewarned me. ACE----------He didn't the last time. DOCTOR----You're right.
The Doctor felt his way to the console, swore and thumped the console hard in frustration. The lights came back on.
ACE----------Well done Professor. DOCTOR----Thank you. I should've tried that before but I was so angry after being thrown around. ACE----------The bleeping's stopped. DOCTOR----Excellent. Probably nothing more than a loose connection. Let's see where we are. ACE----------You know Professor, this thing gets more like an old telly every day. DOCTOR----Hmm. Ace! ACE----------Yeah? DOCTOR----Look where we are. ACE----------Looks like a street to me. DOCTOR----Yes. A London street. ACE----------You're kidding. DOCTOR----No. ACE----------What year is it? DOCTOR----Um, 1996. ACE----------Wicked! Just as long as this ain't a detour to somewhere more sinister. DOCTOR----Like where? ACE----------Perivale? DOCTOR----(smiles) I assure you we are not going to Perivale. ACE----------Good. Well? DOCTOR----Well, what? ACE----------Are we going for a look around, or what? DOCTOR----No. Come on.
The Doctor opened the doors, pulled his brown jacket off the stand and led the way onto the busy road, cramming his battered fedora on his head in the process. He locked the doors.
DOCTOR----I think we'll go.... I've forgotton my umbrella. ACE----------Good job I picked it up then, innit? DOCTOR----What would I do without you? ACE----------Lose lots of umbrellas, and get wet. DOCTOR----(points) That way. ACE----------Can't we go the other way? DOCTOR----No. ACE----------Why not? DOCTOR----Because that looks interesting. ACE----------You and your old cars. DOCTOR----Those aren't old. They're second-hand. Or third-hand. ACE----------Or fiftieth-hand. I hate old bangers. DOCTOR----You enjoyed yourself enough with Bessie. ACE----------A fluke. DOCTOR----Rubbish. You loved it, despite all your unhumourous jokes when you first saw her. ACE----------Yeah. Well. DOCTOR----"Yeah, well" nothing. Come on. There's someone I want to see. ACE----------Who? DOCTOR----The owner. I'm sure he'll be very surprised that I've popped up in his life once again.
The Doctor strolled towards the lot, whistling badly and swinging his umbrella in (his) time. Ace swore then ran to catch him up. As he browsed, sticking his head and umbrella into everywhere - while Ace looked around to make sure no one was watching, a tall man approached. His shoulder-length dark hair had streaks of grey and he was thinning on top. His well-worn face looked friendly - too friendly for her liking. Ace nudged the Doctor, making him fall head first into a car.
ACE----------There's a bloke coming over. DOCTOR----At last. ACE----------Don't trust him, Professor. DOCTOR----Why ever not? ACE----------All used car salemen are the same. They'd sell their granny if they reckoned there was a few quid in it for them. DOCTOR----Not this one. Mister Benton, I presume. BENTON----That's right, sir. Can I help you at all? DOCTOR----I was just browsing. BENTON----Seen anything you like, sir? DOCTOR----No, not really. BENTON----What did you have in mind? DOCTOR----A little open-top roadster. Yellow, I think. Possibly 1930's. Know what I mean? BENTON----I'm afraid not, sir. We don't really deal in old bangers. ACE----------What are all these then? DOCTOR----Ace! BENTON----What I meant was, there's no call for cars like that. ACE----------Crawler. DOCTOR----So, you've no idea what happened to Bessie, then. BENTON----Bessie? What's a Bessie? DOCTOR----The yellow car! Oh, come on Sergeant- BENTON----Mister! DOCTOR----RSM Benton. You must remember Bessie. BENTON----Vaguely. But that's classified information. DOCTOR----Not to me. How do you fancy a trip in the Tardis? BENTON----Look, what's going on here? DOCTOR----I should think you'd know me by now Benton. BENTON----Doctor? ACE----------At last! DOCTOR----Quiet Ace. BENTON----You've done it again, Doc. DOCTOR----(smiles) Do you know anyone else who can? BENTON----No, and I'm bloody well glad. DOCTOR----You've put on weight. BENTON----Not enough exercise. DOCTOR----Why don't you join UNIT again? ACE----------Yeah. Then he can be with Winifred. BENTON----Winifred? DOCTOR----Lethbridge-Stweart's replacement. BENTON----Oh. I bet the Brig wasn't too happy about that. ACE----------No, he wasn't. Chauvenist pig. BENTON----What? DOCTOR----Never mind. BENTON----So Doc, is this a social call? DOCTOR----Erm, yes. ACE----------Erm, no. The Tardis crashed down the road. BENTON----Oh. DOCTOR----But it's good to see you again anyway. BENTON----Well, why don't we go into the cabin and have a chat? Catch up on all the news. DOCTOR----Good idea. Who's for tea? ACE----------I'd rather have coffee. DOCTOR----You'll have tea. BENTON----Shall we go? Oh, there's a customer. You two go ahead while I deal with her. DOCTOR----Okay. BENTON----Won't be long.
Benton walked across to a woman dressed in tight leather, with thigh-length boots and long, dark, curly hair, while the Doctor and Ace went in. Ace plonked herself in Benton's chair while the Doctor watched Benton through the window after switching on the kettle.
BENTON----Can I help you miss?
------------------------------------------
DOCTOR----The Rani! ACE----------The, who? DOCTOR----What's she doing here? Wait a minute. No! Stop!
The Doctor rushed out the door just as a T-reg Ford Cortina disappeared.
DOCTOR----Ace, quick! ACE----------What's going on Professor? DOCTOR----The Rani's kidnapped Benton. We've got to get back to the Tardis and follow her. Come on!
Ace ran after the Doctor. He skidded to a halt at the console, closed the doors and dematerialised after programming in some information.
ACE----------How are we going to find this, Rani? DOCTOR----I've set the Tardis to follow her Tardis. ACE----------For how long? DOCTOR----Ah, now there's a question. Until she stops I suppose.

Part 2
Meanwhile, deep in space, a rather extraordinary craft was heading towards its destination.
BLAKE------Speed, standard by twelve Vila. VILA---------What's the hurry? BLAKE------We've got to get there before Servalan finds out about it. CALLY------Blake's right, Vila. VILA---------You always take his side. Are you a double act or is he working you? CALLY------What do you mean by that? VILA---------Does he have his hand up your- AVON-------I'll do it since he obviously can't be bothered. BLAKE------Thank you Avon. AVON-------Don't thank me. I only want this over and done with as soon as possible. VILA---------Typical Avon. Totally unselfish attitude (!) AVON-------At least my attitude isn't singing dirty songs. VILA---------It's no wonder the lovely Leela fancied me instead of you. AVON-------How dare you speak of Leela like that. VILA---------Why not? If you hadn't been such a rotten bastard, you could've been in there. AVON-------Why you little- ZEN----------Information. BLAKE------What is it Zen? ZEN----------Liberator is on a collision course with another craft. Unidentified at present. VILA---------That's all I need. BLAKE------Are you sure? ZEN----------Confirmed. Collision imminent in thirty seconds. VILA---------That's your rush for you Blake. Now we'll be smashed to pieces. AVON-------Never mind, Vila. I'm sure with the amount you've had to drink, you shouldn't feel a thing. BLAKE------Leave it you two. Zen, put it on the main screen. CALLY------Aren't we going to battle stations? BLAKE------I want to find out what it is first. Zen, screen! ZEN----------Confirmed. Collision imminent now in twenty seconds. VILA---------I don't believe it! I must be hallucinating. BLAKE------It's real Vila. But what does the fool think he's doing? CALLY------Battle stations? BLAKE------Yes. Get ready everyone.
-----------------------------------------
ACE----------Professor! DOCTOR----I'm going as fast as I can. ACE----------Well go faster before we end up crashing again. DOCTOR----It might help if you'd be quiet so I can concentrate. Ah, done it. ACE----------Are we safe now? DOCTOR----I should imagine so. ACE----------Where are we? DOCTOR----On board that craft. ACE----------I hope they're a friendly lot. DOCTOR----So do I, Ace. So do I. Come on, let's get this over with. ACE----------Great. But if you say, "take me to your leader" just once, I'll clock you one with your umbrella. DOCTOR----You wouldn't. ACE----------I would and you bleedin' well know it. DOCTOR----I'll try and restrain myself.
--------------------------------------
BLAKE------Trust the Doctor to turn up again when we least expect it. VILA---------And the luscious Leela. AVON-------Oh yes (smiles), of course. Leela. VILA---------Be nice to her this time Avon. Act abnormal. AVON-------You mean, behave like you. VILA---------Yes. No! BLAKE------Here he comes. DOCTOR----It's all right, Ace. They're quite friendly. Blake, it is so good to see you again. Avon. Vila. Ah, you must be Cally. Pleased to meet you. BLAKE------Who are you? DOCTOR----I'm the Doctor. VILA---------You're not. DOCTOR----I most certainly am. AVON-------Where's the other one? DOCTOR----Other one? BLAKE------The one with the curly hair and long scarf. VILA---------And Leela. DOCTOR----You're looking at him. Look, it'll take too long to explain, but I am he, I assure you. AVON-------Then where's Leela? VILA---------I knew you wanted to get your leg over there! AVON-------Shut up Vila, before I shut you up. Permanantly. VILA---------Touched a nerve. Nah, couldn't have. No feelings to hurt. AVON-------Watch it Vila. I mean what I say. VILA---------Course you do. BLAKE------That's enough! Well? DOCTOR----Leela's on my home planet of Gallifrey. She got married to a man who wanted to kill me. AVON-------Married? DOCTOR----I'm afraid so. I'm sorry. K9 went with her. ACE----------Ready Professor. AVON-------I don't believe it. VILA---------Never mind Avon. There's always this one. She looks more your type. AVON-------I'm going to my room before I end up doing something Vila will surely regret (leaves). VILA---------What did I say? BLAKE------Forget it Vila. You know Avon. VILA---------Yeah and most of the time I wish I didn't. So, who's the girl? ACE----------I'm Ace. VILA---------Well, I'm pretty wonderful myself. DOCTOR----This is Blake, Vila, Cally... that was Avon and the box over there with the flashing lights is Orac. ACE----------And what does it do? ORAC--------I don't do anything, except solve all their problems when they can't manage to by themselves. I also happen to be the most superior computer in the universe. ACE----------Wicked Professor. A talking box that's up itself. ORAC--------I am not a "talking box", as you put it and nor am I 'up myself'. VILA---------No, we generally leave that sort of thing to Avon. ACE----------It's his? BLAKE------Not exactly. It belongs to all of us. VILA---------Although what Orac and Avon get up to in private is anyone's guess. ACE----------Well there does seem to be something iffy about Avon from what I've seen and heard. VILA---------I'm beginning to like you Ace. You're my kind of girl. DOCTOR----I wouldn't count on that, Vila. VILA---------Course she is. What do you do? ACE----------I blow things up. VILA---------I knew I wouldn't like her. BLAKE------So, Doctor. What are you doing here? DOCTOR----We were following someone who has taken a friend of mine against his will. BLAKE------And we got in the way. DOCTOR----Only slightly. Before our near-collision, I discovered she'd landed on a space station not far from here. Do you know it? CALLY------The only space station around here belongs to the Federation. DOCTOR----I see. VILA---------If they landed there you can be sure they're in Servalan's grubby hands by now. DOCTOR----Servalan?! I thought she'd been killed by the Daleks. BLAKE------So did we. VILA---------But unfortuantely, she wasn't. How she survived is anyone's guess. Perhaps she's not human. BLAKE------Wait a minute. VILA---------What for? BLAKE------Don't you remember? VILA---------Remember what? BLAKE------She made clones of me. VILA---------So? You should count yourself lucky it wasn't Avon. BLAKE------No. Who's to say she didn't make some of herself. VILA---------I don't get it. DOCTOR----I do. Her clone could have been exterminated by the Daleks or herself. Either way, if she was cloned it would ensure she'd carry on as before with no one knowing the truth. VILA---------That thought's almost as bad as multiple Avons! DOCTOR----Where were you heading, Blake? BLAKE------The space station. We'd planned to attempt to blow it up. ACE----------Wicked! Good timing eh, Professor? DOCTOR----That is a matter of opinion Ace. BLAKE------Should we abort it? DOCTOR----Hmm. Eh? I'll leave that up to you. But how about, before you do whatever you intend to, you let me rescue my friend. BLAKE------How are you going to do it? You box will stand out. DOCTOR----I had thought of that. No, if the Rani thinks she's safe she'll make mistakes. Now, if I were to use your teleport, it would take her by surprise. BLAKE------Good idea. I'll go with you. Cally, you stay up here. VILA---------What about me? I'm staying too, I hope. BLAKE------Get a gun Vila. VILA---------Do I have to? Why not take Ace instead? DOCTOR----Because she's coming too. ACE----------Don't worry, Vila. I'll look after you. VILA---------That's what Leela said. I think I will like you after all. DOCTOR----Great. We're all friends together. Shall we go? BLAKE------Right. I'll go and get Avon and I'll meet you all in the teleport area.

Part 3
Meanwhile, on the space station, things weren't exactly as the crews of the Liberator and Tardis pictured them.
SERVALAN---Hello Rani. RANI---------Servalan. SERVALAN---What are you doing here? RANI---------I've brought you a present (clicks fingers). SERVALAN---Who's that? RANI---------A friend of the Doctor's. SERVALAN---The Doctor's?! RANI---------Yes. I thought he might be useful to you. I've got to go. SERVALAN---So soon? RANI---------Afraid so. Take good care of him and put him to good use. SERVALAN---Oh, I will. You can be sure of that. RANI---------Excellent. Keep him hidden too. I wouldn't underestimate the Doctor. SERVALAN---I don't. RANI---------Until next time. Bye Servalan (leaves). SERVALAN---Goodbye Rani. And thank you. Now, what's your name? BENTON----John Benton. SERVALAN---Well, John Benton, do I have plans for you.
---------------------------------------
BLAKE------Okay Cally, put us down. CALLY------Good luck.
Cally operated the teleport but nothing happened. She tried it several more times with the same result.
BLAKE------What's happened? CALLY------I don't know. There's probably some sort of fault. ACE----------Why don't you whack it? CALLY------"Whack it"? ACE----------Give it a good thump. CALLY------And what use would that be? ACE----------It got the Tardis working again, didn't it Professor? DOCTOR----Yes Ace, but I don't think it will help here. Cally, why don't you humour her. CALLY------All right Doctor.
Cally hit the controls with the palm of her hand and tried again with no change.
ACE----------Not like that. Clench your fist. CALLY------Whatever you say.
She repeated the process and still nothing happened.
DOCTOR----Looks like we'll have to use the Tardis after all. ACE----------I'm sure she did something wrong. Let me have a go. DOCTOR----Leave it Ace. Cally knows what she's doing so we'll let her fix it. ACE----------Oh, like you and the Tardis, I suppose. You're a real expert where that's concerned. DOCTOR----Ace, the Tardis is considerably older than the Liberator so she's bound to have problems more often. ACE----------Especially when you're in control. BLAKE------So, what do we do now, Doctor? VILA---------Stay here? DOCTOR----We'll use the Tardis. I didn't want to but it seems I have no choice if I want to save Benton. Come on.
------------------------------------------
BENTON----What do you want with me? SERVALAN---I like you and I need someone to rule the universe with me whom I can trust. BENTON----Rule the universe? SERVALAN---That's right. BENTON----With you? SERVALAN---Exactly. BENTON----From this cell? SERVALAN---Ah, well this is only temporary. There are some in the Federation who can't be trusted and who may cause you some harm. BENTON----And can I trust you? SERVALAN---Implicitly. BENTON----With my life? SERVALAN---Naturally. I'm not a hard-hearted ruthless woman who enjoys having people killed, you know. BENTON----I'll think about it. SERVALAN---You do that. Now, is there anything you need? BENTON----Apart from going home, you mean? SERVALAN---Yes. BENTON----Food. SERVALAN---I'll have some sent in and I'll come back in about an hour when I hope you'll be able to give me your decision. BENTON----I'll do my best (!) SERVALAN---Good.
In the Tardis, which was still on board the Liberator. DOCTOR----That's all I need. ACE----------What is it, Professor? DOCTOR----The Rani's left the space station. There's no trace of her at all. BLAKE------Is that bad? DOCTOR----It is if she's still got Benton. BLAKE------So going there could be a complete waste of time. DOCTOR----I'm afraid so. VILA---------Ah, what a shame. And I was so looking forward to it. Never mind, I'm sure we'll think of something else to occupy us. AVON-------I knew you'd be upset. VILA---------Not as upset as you not seeing Leela. AVON-------Why don't we just go anyway, and if your friend isn't there, we can return to the Liberator. Without Vila. VILA---------I'm not going anywhere and neither is anyone else. Tell me Doctor, do you have anything to drink in this contraption of yours? DOCTOR----What did you have in mind? VILA---------Adrenalin and Soma? To celebrate our staying put, of course. AVON-------To top up the fluid flowing through his veins would be more accurate. DOCTOR----Sorry Vila. I've nothing like that aboard. I think there may be some ginger beer around somewhere. VILA---------What are you trying to do, poison me?! AVON-------What a good idea. VILA---------I thought you'd like it. AVON-------(smiles) Oh, I do. Maybe we can force it down you. BLAKE------Stop it! If you can't be reasonably pleasant, shut up. VILA---------You'd better do as Blake says, Avon and shut up. AVON-------What about you? VILA---------You started it. AVON-------No, I didn't. VILA---------Yes, you did. AVON-------When? VILA---------When we were on that prison ship. AVON-------No, Vila. It goes much further back than that. VILA---------To when? AVON-------To when your mother was foolish enough to let your father get near her. BLAKE------That's enough, you two! ACE----------Spoilsport. I was enjoying that. DOCTOR----Never mind, Ace. There's more important things to think about. Right, let's go to the space station.
----------------------------------------------
SERVALAN---Have you decided? BENTON----Yes. SERVALAN---And? BENTON----I will rule with you, Servalan. SERVALAN---What about going home? BENTON----I don't want to go anywhere without you. SERVALAN----And why's that? BENTON----Because I love you. SERVALAN---(smiles) Excellent.
-------------------------------------------
VILA---------How long is this going to take? AVON-------You can always get off, Vila. I'm sure the Doctor will arrange it. VILA---------I need a drink. AVON-------Don't you always? VILA---------Being forced to look at you every day is enough to make anyone hit the bottle. Although, I'd rather hit you. AVON-------You'd miss. VILA---------Are we there yet, Doctor? AVON-------You sound like a child, which isn't surprising. DOCTOR----It's all right Vila. We arrived several minutes ago. VILA---------Good. AVON-------I'm sure Servalan has a bar where you can make yourself at home, while we do all the work. DOCTOR----Shall we go?
In the President's office, Servalan was stretched out on a white leather sofa, being fed grapes by Benton, without a care in the world. Even all thought of getting the Liberator, crew and Orac had gone from her mind. In their place was plans for the future.
SERVALAN---You really love me John? BENTON----I do, Servalan. SERVALAN---Enough to marry me? BENTON----Yes. I want to spend the rest of my life with you, darling. SERVALAN---(mumbles) Well, long enough to serve your purpose. BENTON----What was that, sweetheart? SERVALAN---I said, we could have a family. BENTON----Oh, yes. Yes. I'd love to have children with you. SERVALAN---I'm glad you feel like that John.
As they snogged, a loud groaning filled the room. Servalan looked up to see a white cupboard in the corner.
SERVALAN---I'm sure that wasn't here before. Rani! RANI---------Hello Servalan. SERVALAN---Back so soon? RANI---------Sorry. Did I interrupt something? SERVALAN---Yes. But no matter. RANI---------How's it going? SERVALAN---It was going fine. RANI---------Until I turned up. SERVALAN---Well.... RANI---------I'm pleased for you. SERVALAN---Thank you. He was an excellent choice. RANI---------I understand he was once a soldier of some sort. SERVALAN---Really? Even better. John, why don't you go to my room and wait for me? BENTON----Where is it? SERVALAN---Get one of the guards to escort you. BENTON----Will you be long? SERVALAN---I shouldn't think so. BENTON----Okay. I'll see you later, darling. SERVALAN---I can't wait. Oh, and John? BENTON----Yes? SERVALAN---Don't answer the door to anyone. BENTON----No one at all? SERVALAN---That's right. BENTON----Not even you? SERVALAN---I know a secret entrance. BENTON----But why? SERVALAN---Because once they find out about us, my enemies will stop at nothing to prevent our happiness. BENTON----All right, darling. See you later (leaves). RANI---------I see you've got him trained already. SERVALAN---It wasn't difficult. RANI---------He loves you? SERVALAN---Yes. RANI---------That was quick. Was it an instant attraction? SERVALAN---Not really. He was quite hostile until a little drug helped persuade him to do what I wanted. RANI---------And he knows what you've done? SERVALAN---Of course not. It was in his food, and quite tasteless. It just made him more tired than he realised and when he awoke- RANI---------He wanted to ravish you. SERVALAN---That's right. He's quite tiresome really. I'll be glad to be rid of him. RANI---------And when will that be? SERVALAN---As long as it takes to give me a child. Would you like some refreshment?
--------------------------------------
DOCTOR----It's a big place. VILA---------Yeah, and Federation guards are everywhere. DOCTOR----Blake, you know Servalan better than I do. If Benton is here, where would she put him? BLAKE------Your guess is as good as mine. AVON-------There's bound to be some cells here somewhere. VILA---------Yeah, and we're bound to get very acquainted with them if we stay here much longer. ACE----------You're a pessimist Vila, just like the Doctor. VILA---------I'm a realist, that's all. Servalan'll have us just where she wants us. If we're not killed, we could be here forever, rotting and starving. AVON-------And thirsty. VILA---------Definately thirsty. Let's go back before it's too late. AVON-------Don't be ridiculous Vila. As long as we're careful - and you keep quiet - we'll be safe enough. GUARD------Halt! VILA---------What did I tell you? AVON-------Shut up, Vila. VILA---------You never listen to me. I told you this would happen. AVON-------And you probably told them while you were at it. Now be quiet before you do any more damage. DOCTOR----Hello. I'm the Doctor and these are my friends. GUARD------I don't care who you are. You're just prisoners to me. DOCTOR----I see. And what, may I ask, are you going to do with us? GUARD------I'm sure Servalan would like to know about you. DOCTOR----Oh well, in that case, take us to your leader. ACE----------Professor! DOCTOR----What? ACE----------You promised you wouldn't say that. DOCTOR----I'm sorry. I couldn't help myself. It seemed apt considering our predicament. Besides, I did say, "us" and not, "me". ACE----------That's not the point. Give me your umbrella. DOCTOR----Certainly not. ACE----------Then I'll just have to take it from you. DOCTOR----I wouldn't advise it. ACE----------Why not? DOCTOR----Because the guard looks a little trigger happy to me. GUARD------You're right. ACE----------Oh. Well, you'll keep. DOCTOR----Now my good man, shall I lead the way? GUARD------And no tricks. BLAKE------We wouldn't dream of it, would we Vila? VILA---------Definately not. You can rely on me. AVON-------And that's the only thing we can rely on him for. VILA---------When you've finished with the Doctor's umbrella Ace, do you think I could borrow it? AVON-------What on earth for? It's not going to rain in here. VILA---------You hope. You'll see plenty of stars though. AVON-------I see enough of those already. VILA---------Ah, but these are special ones. Aren't they, Ace? ACE----------They certainly are. It'll be a pleasure to give you the umbrella. AVON-------Those two are as peculiar as each other. Get me away from here. GUARD------Right, move it.
--------------------------------------
SERVALAN---So, how long do you intend to stay this time? RANI---------I'm not sure. It depends. SERVALAN---Well, you know you're more than welcome.
The door slid open and the guard ushered everyone into the room.
GUARD------Madame President. SERVALAN---How dare you enter unannounced. GUARD------I have prisoners, Madame. SERVALAN---So I see. Well, what have we here? Blake, Vila, Avon. And who are you two? RANI---------The man is the Doctor. I don't know about the girl. DOCTOR----Her name's, Ace. RANI---------Whatever happened to that sickening Melanie? DOCTOR----She left. RANI---------I'm not surprised. SERVALAN---You're the Doctor? DOCTOR----That's right. SERVALAN---You can't be. DOCTOR----Why? Because I no longer have a long scarf and a different face? RANI---------I assure you Servalan, this man is the Doctor. SERVALAN---That's impossible. RANI---------It's not uncommon amongst our people to appear completely different. SERVALAN---I see. So, what are you doing here? DOCTOR----We've come to take Benton back where he belongs. SERVALAN---And what has John got to do with Blake, Vila and Avon? DOCTOR----They're helping me. SERVALAN---Supposing he doesn't want to return, Doctor? DOCTOR----He will. SERVALAN---Don't be so sure. DOCTOR----If you don't mind, I'd prefer him to tell me what he wants to do. No offence. SERVALAN---None taken. Very well. Guard, lock them up. DOCTOR----I thought you were going to let me speak to Benton. SERVALAN---I'll bring him to you. Later. Take them away. GUARD------Come on you lot. DOCTOR----I'm warning you both. If either of you have done anything to him at all, you'll have me to answer to. SERVALAN---Oh Doctor, I'm so frightened (!)
The door closed behind them.
RANI---------I wouldn't ignore his words, Servalan. SERVALAN---He doesn't worry me. RANI---------Maybe not. But I've known him for centuries and he can be very cunning. Just watch your back, that's all. SERVALAN---What possible harm can he do me locked behind and surrounded by 2 feet of durilinium? RANI---------I don't know. But you can be sure he'll try something. SERVALAN---We'll see, Rani. We'll see.
--------------------------------------------
VILA---------Didn't I tell you we'd end up in here? AVON-------All right, Vila. Stop feeling so pleased with yourself and try to work out how we're going to get out. ACE----------That's easy. DOCTOR----Oh, no. BLAKE------How? ACE----------We'll blow the door off. VILA---------With what. our breath? AVON-------Yours might make it sway a little. ACE----------I've got some nitro-nine. It's got more uses than a credit card. DOCTOR----She never leaves home without it. BLAKE------Well, what are we waiting for? ACE----------Wicked! Everyone into the corner. DOCTOR----How long are those timers? ACE----------Twenty seconds. DOCTOR----They'd better be. (sighs) Go on then. ACE----------Ace!
Ace placed three canisters by the door then joined the others. Before she had a chance to crouch down, they went off. The room filled with smoke, making everyone cough.
DOCTOR----Twenty seconds? ACE---------Erm, anyone can make a mistake, Professor. DOCTOR----You always do, where nitro-nine's concerned. ACE----------Sorry. DOCTOR----I thought you were going to fix those timers. ACE----------I never got round to it. I was going to before the Tardis acted up. DOCTOR----All right. Well, did it work? I can't see a thing. AVON-------There's a few dents, that's all. VILA---------That was a waste of time then. ACE----------At least I tried, which is more than any of you did. DOCTOR----All right, Ace. BLAKE------So, we're back where we started. DOCTOR----I'm afraid it certainly looks like it.
To be conmtinued....

Part 4
Meanwhile, Servalan left the Rani in her room and went to Benton.
BENTON----What kept you? SERVALAN---Sorry. I was chatting to the Doctor. BENTON----Doctor? Doctor who? SERVALAN---Your friend. It seems he wants to take you home. BENTON----I won't go anywhere without you. SERVALAN---That's what I'd hoped you'd say. He wants to talk to you. BENTON----He can wait. Come here. SERVALAN---Are you going to - now how did the Rani put it? Oh, yes. Ravish me? BENTON----If you have no objections. SERVALAN---Not in the slightest. Only, so hurry up. I haven't got all day. BENTON----I'll be as quick as I can then. SERVALAN---Very well.
A little later...
SERVALAN---Well, that was quicker than I expected. BENTON----I'm sorry, Servalan. I don't know what came over me. SERVALAN---Perhaps not. But I certainly know what came over me! The least you could have done was let me take my clothes off first. BENTON----I am sorry, Servalan. SERVALAN---Look at my dress. It's ruined. BENTON----I said I was sorry. What more do you want? SERVALAN---I expect you to try and control yourself. Why I want to share the universe with you, I'll never know. I'm surrounded by imbeciles. BENTON----It won't happen again. SERVALAN---It had better not. BENTON----Next time I'll wait until we're in bed. SERVALAN---Very wise. I suppose I ought to take you to the Doctor now. BENTON----But it wasn't my fault. SERVALAN---The Doctor in the cells, you idiot. BENTON----Oh. Sorry. SERVALAN---Pull your trousers up while I get changed. You look ridiculous. BENTON----Whatever you say, Servalan.
Meanwhile in the cells, the smoke caused by Ace's nitro-nine was still thick, although it had cleared slightly.
BLAKE------Any ideas yet, Doctor? DOCTOR----I'm afraid not, Blake. It's times like these when I wish I'd made another sonic screwdriver. VILA---------If blowing us up won't open the door, I'm sure a screwdriver wouldn't be much use. DOCTOR----It's not just a screwdriver. I'm sure it could have easily opened it. ACE----------And besides, I didn't try to blow us up. VILA---------Try telling that to my cuts, bruises and sore throat. AVON-------You don't have any cuts or bruises, Vila. But I could easily give you a few. VILA---------You'd do that to a dying man?! AVON-------You're not dying - unfortunately. But that can be arranged too, if you like. VILA---------No, I wouldn't like. AVON-------Oh, that is a shame. And here I was, mentally planning your funeral. VILA---------That's you all over, Avon. AVON-------What, kind? Caring? Adorable? VILA---------Mental! AVON-------You should know, if anyone does. DOCTOR----Shhh. BLAKE------What is it? DOCTOR----There's someone coming. VILA---------I don't hear anything. Maybe the blast has made me deaf. No, that's impossible. I can still hear Avon and, despite all this fog, see him. BLAKE------I don't hear anything either. DOCTOR----There's four of them, including the guards, right outside the door. Quick, get back and act normal. VILA---------How are we meant to do that? AVON-------Just be yourself. SERVALAN---Good evening gentlemen... lady. I hope you are being well treated. DOCTOR----As well as we could expect, I suppose. SERVALAN---Is there anything you need? BLAKE------How about our freedom? DOCTOR----You took the words right out of my mouth. SERVALAN---I'm afraid that is totally out of the question. But, if there's anything else. DOCTOR----I'm sure we'll think of something, Servalan. Now, when can I speak to my friend? SERVALAN---Which one? DOCTOR----I don't understand. SERVALAN---The Rani or John Benton? DOCTOR----Benton, of course. That's the reason I'm here. SERVALAN---Right now. Come in John. DOCTOR----Mister Benton! I'm so glad to see you at last. How are you? BENTON----Very well, Doctor. In fact, things have never been better. DOCTOR----Oh, really? BENTON----Yes. DOCTOR----Don't worry, Benton. You'll soon be home again. BENTON----But Doctor, this is my home. DOCTOR----No, it isn't. BENTON----Oh yes, it is. DOCTOR----Oh no, it isn't. BENTON----Oh yes, it is! ACE----------That's all we need. A bleedin' panto! BENTON----My place is with Servalan. DOCTOR----Your place is twentieth century Earth. You're coming with me. BENTON----No, I am not! I'm staying right here to marry Servalan. DOCTOR----Marry?! BENTON----That's right. ACE----------Bloody hell! VILA---------I couldn't have put it better myself. No one'd marry Servalan unless they were drunk or drugged. AVON-------Or completely stupid, which makes you an ideal candidate Vila. VILA---------Eh? AVON-------As they say; two out of three ain't bad. BLAKE------For the last time. Will you stop it, you two. DOCTOR----You don't belong here, Benton. BENTON----I do. DOCTOR----Oh no, you don't. BENTON----Oh yes, I do! ACE----------Don't start that again. SERVALAN---I told you Doctor. Come on John. ACE----------Yeah, be a good little zombie and go with the wicked witch. BENTON----Goodbye Doctor. DOCTOR----What has happened to you, Benton? You never used to be like this. BENTON----I met the most wonderful woman in the universe, Doctor. Love, is what's happened to me. Goodbye Doc. No hard feelings, eh? DOCTOR----No, Benton. No hard feelings. Goodbye. SERVALAN---Well, you've had your cosy little chat like I promised, so now I'll leave you in the capable hands of the guards. I'm sure they'll look after you. VILA---------I bet they will (!) DOCTOR----For how long, Servalan? SERVALAN---For as long as I decide. It could be a week. It could be six months. It could even be a few hours. DOCTOR----I see. SERVALAN---Then again, if you make me angry, I'll see to it none of you ever see daylight - in a manner of speaking - or breathe clean air ever again.
Servalan left, the guard locking the door behind her. She stood by Benton's side.
SERVALAN---They shouldn't give you any trouble. GUARD------They'd better not. SERVALAN---But, if they do, you have my full permission to kill anyone who does. Do you understand? GUARD------I do, Madame President, and it will be a pleasure. SERVALAN---I rather think it will be their pleasure after several months cooped up together. Vila is enough to drive anyone insane. After all, he did drive himself to drink. But don't enjoy yourself too much. GUARD------I'll try not to, Madame President. SERVALAN---Good. Get on with your duty then. GUARD------Yes sir, Madame President. SERVALAN---Now John, nothing to say? BENTON----About what? SERVALAN---My orders concerning the possible execution of the Doctor and his friends. BENTON----Of course not. SERVALAN---So you agree with my decision? BENTON----Yes. Execute the Doctor or anyone, if you must. SERVALAN---I knew I'd made the right choice with you. Come. BENTON----Where to? SERVALAN---The bedroom. Any objections? BENTON----You won't hear any from me.
----------------------------------------
BLAKE------Well, Doctor? DOCTOR----Hmm? I'm sorry. I was thinking. ACE----------What about? VILA---------Getting us out of here, hopefully. AVON-------So he can go straight to the nearest bar. DOCTOR----No, I wasn't actually. AVON-------Oh, what a shame. Vila will have to rely on his limited wits until he can get some liquid courage into him. VILA---------Shut up Avon. BLAKE------So, what were you thinking about, Doctor? DOCTOR----Something Ace said. ACE----------Me? DOCTOR----Yes. ACE----------It's nice to know I'm useful sometimes. DOCTOR----You're always useful, Ace. ACE----------So, what did I say? DOCTOR----You called Benton a zombie. ACE----------Well, he's acting like one. DOCTOR----I'm rather afraid he is. BLAKE------You mean, Servalan's drugged him? ACE----------Obviously, divbrain. DOCTOR----Ace! Yes Blake, it certainly looks that way. VILA---------Perhaps he really is in love with her. AVON-------Oh, I seriously doubt that. VILA---------Why? AVON-------It's a bit like being in love with you. VILA---------More like you. No one likes you Avon. Not even Leela. AVON-------Will you stop going on about Leela! VILA---------Leela liked me. She threatened to kill you, remember? AVON-------Oh, shut up! BLAKE------Well if he is drugged there's not much you can do about it stuck in here. DOCTOR----No. BLAKE------I wish we'd brought the teleport bracelets. DOCTOR----I'm afraid they wouldn't be much use to you. BLAKE------We could've got help from Cally. DOCTOR----Blake, this cell is solid durilinium, with, I suspect, a hint of lead. VILA---------Oh great (!) Lead poisoning now to add to the list of things which'll do us in. DOCTOR----It's perfectly harmless. VILA---------Course it is (!) DOCTOR----The outside is lead lined. I saw that when we were brought here. So I wouldn't be at all surprised if there's some elsewhere too. Cally would never have heard you Blake. ACE----------So, what are we going to do, Professor? VILA---------Sit in here forever and rot! DOCTOR----Not necessarily. We can get out of here. ACE----------What, lure the guards in here and clobber them? DOCTOR----No Ace. Nice thought, but they can't hear us. It just so happens I managed to get a key from the one next to Benton. And it's obvious he hasn't noticed yet. ACE----------Wicked! VILA---------So, now what? DOCTOR----Now we wait a few hours until they check on us to see if we're asleep. ACE----------But we could get out then. DOCTOR----No Ace. I can't run the risk of one of you getting hurt. We'll pretend to be asleep, wait a while after they've closed the door and then make our move. BLAKE------Why so long? DOCTOR----With any luck, they might go to sleep. At the outside they won't be so vigilant. Any questions? Good. Let's get comfortable. It's going to be a long night.

Part 5
Several hours later, everyone in the cell apart from the Doctor, had gone to sleep. The Doctor sat against the wall opposite the door and waited, Vila's snoring irritating him slightly. He heard the locks on the door open and quickly closed his eyes. The door closed again after a few minutes and he opened them again. Outside the cell, the guard went over to his collegue, leant the gun against the desk and flopped in his chair.
GUARD 2----Any trouble? GUARD 1----Nah. They're all well away. GUARD 2----Well, that's something at least. GUARD 1----Yeah. I half expected to be jumped on. Couldn't believe my luck when no one moved. GUARD 2----P'raps they intended to, but boredom set in. GUARD 1----Could be. They didn't know when they'd be checked on. GUARD 2----They obviously got 'tired' of waiting. GUARD 1----Yeah. Or the two what kept arguing wore them out. GUARD 2----Maybe they killed 'em to get some peace. GUARD 1----If only. GUARD 2----Whaddya mean? GUARD 1----One of them was snoring his head off. GUARD 2----Pity. GUARD 1----I couldn't agree more. It's a shame they don't do each other in once and for all, then we could go off and enjoy ourselves. GUARD 2----So, we've just gotta sit here until we get relieved? GUARD 1----Afraid so. GUARD 2----But there's nothing to do. GUARD 1----I don't know about you, but I'm not just going to sit here staring at our surroundings. GUARD 2----Whatcha gonna do then? GUARD 1----Take a leaf out of their book and get some kip. GUARD 2----Supposing you get caught? GUARD 1----Aw, come on. You know as well as I do no one - not even our illustrious leader - comes down here at night. We'll be safe for a few hours. GUARD 2----I hope you're right cos I could do with forty winks meself. I'm knackered! GUARD 1----I'll set the alarm for two, when it's time to look in on them again. Don't worry. They're not going anywhere, and neither is anyone else. GUARD 2----Okay. But I hope this ain't the night someone comes to get one of 'em for interrogarrotting. GUARD 1----Shut up and have a drink. GUARD 2----You know I never touch it. GUARD 1----Try it just this once. It'll help you relax. GUARD 2----Oh, all right. But just a little. GUARD 1----Good man.
Meanwhile, in the Presidential bedchamber....
BENTON----Was that better, Servalan? SERVALAN---Much. In fact, considering your rather primitive upbringing, it was rather good. BENTON----Thank you I'm sure (!) SERVALAN---I meant it as a compliment. BENTON----Oh. Fancy some more? SERVALAN---Not just now, even though you are a considerably good lover. I think we should both go to sleep. You'll need all your strength for tomorrow. BENTON----Tomorrow? SERVALAN---Our wedding. BENTON----So soon? SERVALAN---You haven't changed you mind, I hope. BENTON----Not at all. I'm surprised, that's all. I thought we might wait a little. SERVALAN---What on Earth for? BENTON----Well, call me old-fashioned if you like, but shouldn't we at least get to know each other first? SERVALAN---You are old-fashioned. Why wait? BENTON----We may not be compatible. SERVALAN---We are in one thing. John, in this day and age, when you never know when you're going to be dead, you have to seize all chances by the throat. Do you understand? BENTON----I think so. SERVALAN---Good. Now turn off the light and go to sleep. BENTON----Whatever you say, darling. 'Night. SERVALAN---Goodnight John.
---------------------------------------
DOCTOR----Blake? Come on. It's time to go. BLAKE------Hmm? What time is it? DOCTOR----Late. I'll wake Ace while you wake Vila and Avon. BLAKE------Okay. DOCTOR----And make sure you tell them to be quiet otherwise we'll probably end up dead. BLAKE------Vila won't like that. DOCTOR----No. So perhaps he'll keep his comments to himself. At least until we're safe. If only Leela knew all the trouble she's caused. I'll have to mention it when I next see her. BLAKE------You do that, and don't forget to send her their everlasting love. DOCTOR----I'll do that.
Everyone was woken up and joined the Doctor by the door. He held a small, glittering object in his hand and pressed his ear against the cold metal.
ACE----------What are you doing, Professor? DOCTOR----Shhh. Yes, they're asleep. BLAKE------How can you be so sure, Doctor? DOCTOR----Because I can hear them grunting. VILA---------I always knew the Federation were a lot of pigs. Perhaps you should've joined up Avon. AVON-------Being a pig is better than being an arsehole, Vila. VILA---------I thought you were that too. BLAKE------What did I tell you two? VILA---------Sorry Blake. I won't do it again. AVON-------Neither will I. VILA---------Unless he starts on me. BLAKE------No excuses, either of you. Doctor? DOCTOR----Yes, Blake? BLAKE------I meant to ask you before. If this room is lead lined and no one can hear us- DOCTOR----How can I hear them? My hearing is superior to you humans. BLAKE------I see. What's that in your hand? DOCTOR----The key I took from the guard. AVON-------But surely it's useless from this side. DOCTOR----Why? AVON-------Because it needs to be inserted into a slot on the other side. DOCTOR----Normally, yes. But while you were asleep, I altered its molecular structure so the door can be opened from this side. AVON-------I see. VILA---------I don't. ACE----------Neither do I. DOCTOR----I've magnetised it. BLAKE------Are you quite sure you know what you're doing, Doctor? AVON-------I agree. The last thing we want are alarms going off because you've made a mistake. VILA---------You haven't, have you Doctor? DOCTOR----Of course not. I used something similar on a Dalek ship during their invasion of Earth. I wouldn't have been able to get out of the cell otherwise. (to himself) I was foolish in those days. I should have known it was a trap, a test. (to the rest) Still, at least they didn't manage to turn me into a Roboman. VILA---------I won't ask what that was about. AVON-------Good. This is all very interesting I'm sure Doctor, but do you think we could get out of this cell before we become very old? DOCTOR----What's wrong with being old? AVON-------Nothing, as long as you like being senile and incapable. DOCTOR----I'll have you know, young man, I'm over one thousand years old, have all my faculties and am far from incapable. ACE----------That's a matter of opinion. AVON-------Sure you are (!) DOCTOR----Are you calling me a liar? AVON-------Well, it does stretch credibility somewhat. DOCTOR----My race can live for centuries. AVON-------As well as getting a new face, naturally (!) DOCTOR----Naturally. Now, before I open the door, I want you all to remove your footwear. BLAKE------Why? DOCTOR----So we don't alert the guards when you- ACE----------Clobber them? DOCTOR----Crude, but exact. BLAKE------Okay Doctor. VILA---------But it's cold on the floor! AVON-------Then you stay here until we men- ACE----------What am I then, a poodle? AVON-------And Ace- ACE----------That's better. AVON-------Have carried out the task. VILA---------All right then. Have fun. DOCTOR----Shall we get on? BLAKE------Go ahead, Doctor.
While Blake, Avon and Ace removed their footwear, the Doctor carefully aligned the electronic key with the locks. One by one they clicked open.
DOCTOR----Voila! VILA---------We aren't free yet. DOCTOR----Oh ye of little faith. Watch.
The Doctor removed a credit card from his top pocket, eased it into the crack between the door and wall and applied a little pressure. The door opened enough to allow it to be pulled by hand.
VILA---------He did it! He actually did it! DOCTOR----Yes, well, save your enthusiasm for later, Vila. VILA---------Later? Oh. I'd forgotten about that. BLAKE------We hadn't. What now, Doctor? ACE----------Clobber the guards, of course. BLAKE-------Thank you 'Doctor' for your words of wisdom. ACE----------I was only trying to help. DOCTOR----And very grateful we are too. ACE----------Sounds like it. DOCTOR----As Ace so pleasantly put it Blake, you clobber them. AVON-------And what are you going to do while we're risking our lives for you, Doctor? Stand back and applaud? DOCTOR----Of course not. I'll have no part in committing violence, unless it's in self defence. AVON-------Oh, great. Another coward. DOCTOR----I am not a coward. So far I've done all the work. AVON-------What work? All you do is think. DOCTOR----I got the door open, which is more than you did. AVON-------I'm sure I would have thought of a way. DOCTOR----Yes, well, while you were thinking we could have been killed by one of those two. Now, kindly get out there before they wake up and actually do the job they're trained for. BLAKE------Come on Avon. Ace, are you coming? ACE----------Try and stop me. BLAKE------Right, let's go and put them to sleep before they wake up. DOCTOR----Good luck. AVON-------Luck, has nothing to do with it. ACE----------No, but a blunt instrument does.
The Doctor and Vila waited silently while Ace handed Blake and Avon a canister each.
BLAKE------What's that for? ACE----------In case they wake up. You can threaten to blow us up. AVON-------You might have a death wish, young lady, but I'm sure neither of us do. ACE----------It's insurance. It'll also help if someone comes, stupid. AVON-------Oh. BLAKE------What are you going to do while we stand here like pillocks? ACE----------Whack the bastards, of course. AVON-------I thought we were in this together. ACE----------We are. But I've got the bat so why don't you shut up and keep an eye out? BLAKE------It sounds like a good idea to me. ACE----------Right then. Well, off you go.
While Avon and Blake went to opposite ends of the corridor, Ace pulled her baseball bat out of her rucksack, tip-toed behind the guards and hit them once on the head very hard, and watched them slump forward.
ACE----------You can come out now, Professor. DOCTOR----I knew I shouldn't have let her get involved. Come on Vila. BLAKE------Well done Ace. ACE----------Cheers. DOCTOR----I just hope you haven't killed them. ACE----------Course I haven't. What do you take me for? DOCTOR----I won't answer that. VILA---------So now do we just return to your box? DOCTOR----No. I suggest two of you take their uniforms. VILA---------Which two? DOCTOR----Well, this one looks about your size Vila. VILA---------I was afraid you were going to say that. It's a conspiracy. You and Avon are working together. You'll do anything to get at me. AVON-------I don't need any help to get at you Vila. VILA---------Course you don't. All right Doc, then what? DOCTOR----We'll lock these two in the cell and you and Blake can pretend to take us to Servalan. Any questions? Good.
Aboard the Liberator, Cally was worried. She'd fixed the teleport but there was still no sign of the others returning.
CALLY------I wish they'd taken some bracelets. DAYNA-----Who are you talking to? CALLY------So you're with us, at last. DAYNA-----There's no need to be like that, Cally. I couldn't help being ill, you know. CALLY------No. I'm sorry. DAYNA-----Where is everybody? CALLY------At the space station. They've been gone over ten hours. DAYNA-----Who has? CALLY------Blake, Vila, the Doctor and Ace. DAYNA-----The Doctor and Ace? CALLY------It's a long story. DAYNA-----Well, you'd better fill me in.
---------------------------------------
DOCTOR----We all ready then? VILA---------As ready as I'll ever be. I'd be more ready if I had a drink. AVON-------Well, we haven't got any so you'll have to manage without it for once. BLAKE------Where are we going, Doctor? DOCTOR----To find Benton. AVON-------And then what? Get ourselves killed for you? DOCTOR----I hope not. AVON-------He's your friend. We didn't ask to be part of this. DOCTOR----No. And if your ship hadn't been in the way, you wouldn't have been. BLAKE------It's all right, Doctor. DOCTOR----Shall we go? The sooner we get back to the Tadris and aboard the Liberator, the better. VILA---------Hear, hear. BLAKE------You'd better lead the way, Doctor.
-----------------------------------------
DAYNA-----I see. CALLY------It's obvious they need help, but someone's got to stay here. DAYNA-----I'll go. CALLY------Are you sure? DAYNA-----Yes. Let me know if they come back. CALLY------I will. DAYNA-----(puts on bracelet) I'll report as often as possible. Ready. CALLY------Good luck.
---------------------------------------
DOCTOR----Wait. ACE----------What is it? DOCTOR----I thought I heard something. Must be imagination. Come on.
--------------------------------------
DAYNA-----Down and safe. I'll report in five minutes. CALLY------Okay. But be careful. DAYNA-----I will be. Out. What the.....
--------------------------------------
VILA---------How much further? DOCTOR----How would I know. Oh, look. BLAKE------What is it? DOCTOR----The Tardis! BLAKE------At least we know where to find it once we've rescued your friend. AVON-------Providing nothing goes wrong. DOCTOR----You know, I've just had an idea. VILA---------Another one? Careful Doctor. You'll wear yourself out. BLAKE------Never mind Vila. What's your idea? DOCTOR----Let's go into the Tardis and I'll explain.
--------------------------------------
DAYNA-----Bring me up Cally. CALLY------Did you find them? DAYNA-----No. I didn't find anyone. Just bring me up. CALLY------Okay (operates teleport). Who are you? RANI---------I am known as the Rani. CALLY------What do you want? RANI---------I want the Doctor. CALLY------He's not here. RANI---------I'll wait. CALLY------Where's Dayna? RANI---------Safe. Now be quiet and you won't get hurt.
-------------------------------------
ACE----------All right Professor. What's going on? DOCTOR----It suddenly occured to me where Benton might be. VILA---------And where's that, or shouldn't I ask? DOCTOR----With Servalan. BLAKE------When you say, "with", so you mean, [/i]with[/i]? DOCTOR----I most certainly do. VILA---------If you mean what I think you mean, it's a disgusting thought. AVON-------No more disgusting than thinking of you in the same place. VILA---------At least I didn't have my hand up her dress on Sarron. AVON-------I did no such thing. I only kissed her. VILA---------I always knew you had a sick mind, Avon. AVON-------The only sickness I have is when I have to look at you. VILA---------Yeah? Well Leela never had that problem. BLAKE------I'm getting a little fed up with this nonsense. ACE----------Yeah, me an' all. Give it a rest. VILA---------I thought you were on my side. ACE----------I am. I just want to hear what the Doctor's got to say. VILA---------I forgive you. BLAKE------Go on, Doctor. DOCTOR----So, it occured to me that taking him from there might not be such a good idea. VILA---------I couldn't agree more. She's bound to be surrounded by guards. ACE----------In the bedroom? VILA---------Could be. ACE----------Kinky. AVON-------For once, I agree with Vila. VILA---------Whoopee! Let's have a party! ACE----------All right, Vila. Stop doing your "Monkey" impression. VILA---------I'm not a monkey! ACE----------Never mind. AVON-------As I was saying. Although it's highly unlikely there will be any inside the room, she's sure to have several outside. BLAKE------She probably locked the door too. ACE----------And hung a "Do Not Disturb" sign on his knob. DOCTOR----Ace.... ACE----------Sorry, the knob. DOCTOR----That's better. ACE----------It was only a joke, Professor. DOCTOR----One in very poor taste. ACE----------I wouldn't know. Why don't you ask Servalan? DOCTOR----Ace.... ACE----------I'll shut up. DOCTOR----Good idea. BLAKE------So that's obviously out. DOCTOR----Ace.... ACE----------I didn't say a word. DOCTOR----I know. But it's what you would've said. ACE----------Only in your thousand year old mind, you dirty old Time Lord. DOCTOR----So, what I suggest is this.....

Part 6
Morning had broken - or whatever passed for morning in space. Servalan looked like she was half in a bin bag as she leant against the headboard, clutching the black satin sheet to her chest. She stared at Benton.
SERVALAN---He looks disgusting when he's asleep. He's not too wonderful awake. What is it that makes me want him so much? Love perhaps? No. Love is one weakness to which I refuse to succumb. Preposterous idea. Come on John. BENTON----Ouch! What did you kick me for? SERVALAN---It's time for you to get out. BENTON----Eh? SERVALAN---It's our wedding day and we both have to get ready. So come on, move yourself. BENTON----Don't I get a good morning kiss? Goodbye kiss? SERVALAN---I know what you will get if you don't leave right now. BENTON----Oh, Servalan. And at this time in the morning too. SERVALAN---Not that. We haven't got all day, you know. BENTON----Can't you give me a minute to wake up properly? SERVALAN---No.
She pushed him onto the floor.
BENTON----Hey! SERVALAN---Out! BENTON----(gets up) All right, I'm going. Can I at least put my clothes on, or would you prefer me to go about this place starkers? SERVALAN---And let other women see what they're missing out on and men get jealous? BENTON----Thought not. SERVALAN---Just get on with it.
------------------------------------
VILA---------I'm hungry. AVON-------Makes a change from thirsty. VILA---------All right Avon. We all know you don't need food or drink because you're inhuman. AVON-------I do, but the liquid I have is a hell of a lot different from yours. DOCTOR----Ace, get them some refreshment. ACE----------What did your last slave die of? VILA---------Bullet wounds? DOCTOR----No, laziness. ACE----------Okay (leaves). AVON-------How much longer are we staying in here? DOCTOR----Not long. I hope. VILA---------You won't want me tagging along, will you? I mean, I'll only get in the way. AVON-------You always do, but it's never stopped you getting involved. VILA---------Under duress. AVON-------I never imagined it was voluntary. ACE----------Grub's up. DOCTOR----Nearly time to go, so hurry up. VILA---------Oh, marvellous (!) Not content with trying to get us shot or starved, now he wants us to choke. Thanks a lot Doc. You're a real friend (!) DOCTOR----My pleasure. Right, it's time we were off. VILA---------Give us a chance! DOCTOR----Two minutes then, but not a nanosecond longer.
In the President's office, Benton waited nervously for his bride to arrive. He couldn't believe that one day he was selling clapped-out old bangers and the next he was marrying one. Finally the doors opened and in walked Servalan dressed in virginal white (?) Benton smiled proudly.
Meanwhile everyone from the Tardis chased the Doctor as he ran down corridor after corridor.
DOCTOR----Hurry up! VILA---------Where's the fire? DOCTOR----I don't know but we've got to stop it being lit. VILA---------Your trouble is you have no patience, Doctor. DOCTOR----Oh, very droll (!)
The Doctor skidded to a halt outside a door.
DOCTOR----I've the strangest feeling I've been here before. BLAKE------You have Doctor. Servalan's office is the other side. DOCTOR----Good. It's nice to know I'm not mad. AVON-------Quite possibly, but we haven't known you long enough to judge. VILA---------I don't like this. AVON-------What's new? VILA---------I mean, it's been too easy. DOCTOR----I agree. ACE----------Yeah. Where are the guards? BLAKE------In there presumably. DOCTOR----Right, everyone ready? Let's go.
------------------------------------------
MAN---------I now pronounce you-
Suddenly smoke filled the room, making everyone cough violently. By the time it began to clear, the assailants were long gone.
SERVALAN---Where's John? Get after them you fools! I won't let anyone ruin my plan!
-------------------------------------------
DOCTOR----Hold tight, everyone.
The Tardis dematerialised as the guards fired on it. Servalan arrived.
SERVALAN---Well? GUARD------I'm sorry, Madame President. I'm afraid we were too late. SERVALAN---They can't have gone. They must be hiding. I want every inch of this station searched. GUARD------It won't do any good, Madame President. SERVALAN---How dare you speak like that to me. GUARD------I'm sorry. But they were inside a craft which disappeared into thin air. SERVALAN---Don't be so ridiculous. Have you been drinking? GUARD------No, Madame President. SERVALAN---Things don't just disappear, you fool. Where's the Rani? GUARD------Dunno. Haven't seen her for ages. SERVALAN---Right. Well, get back to your duties! GUARD------Yes, Madame President (leaves). SERVALAN---I won't forget this treachery, Rani.
-------------------------------------------
BENTON----What's going on, Doc? DOCTOR----I'm taking you back where you belong. BENTON----I belong with Servalan. She was almost my wife. VILA---------Saved you from a fate worse than death then. You should be grateful. BENTON----Grateful?! You imbeciles have ruined my life. Take me back at once, Doc! DOCTOR----I'm sorry. BENTON----I thought we were mates, Doc. DOCTOR----We are. BENTON----Looks like it. You just don't want me to be happy. VILA---------Happy? With Servalan?! BENTON----She loves me. DOCTOR----Does she? BENTON----Yes. DOCTOR----Has she said as much? BENTON----No. DOCTOR----Then how do you know? BENTON----I just do, that's all. AVON-------I'm sorry to disillusion you, but I'm afraid the only person Servalan loves is herself. BENTON----That's not true. BLAKE------I'm afraid it is. We've all known her a lot longer than you. VILA---------Unfortunately! AVON-------How true. Do you know what she offered me once? BENTON----How could I when I wasn't there and have only just met you? AVON-------Then let me enlighten you. Total reign alongside her, which I refused. VILA---------And a good job too. You know where you are when Avon's on the same side. I dread to think what he'd be like if he changed sides. ACE----------From what I know already, he'd probably be exactly the same. VILA---------You know, you could be right. He'd only use his power for his own advantage. BLAKE------Like Servalan. VILA---------Exactly! It's a shame they hate each other. They'd have made a wonderful couple. BENTON----You're lying, all of you. DOCTOR----Why would we want to do that? BENTON----To try and make me go off her. Well it won't work. I love her and want to marry her. DOCTOR----But, do you Benton? BENTON----Of course I do. I wouldn't say it otherwise. DOCTOR----What happened after you arrived there? BENTON----You're unbelievable! DOCTOR----Humour me. What did you do? What did you say? It's important. BENTON----I don't know! I can't remember everything, you know. DOCTOR----Just as I thought. VILA---------If you two are going to argue, do you think you could let the rest of us out, Doctor? DOCTOR----No. ACE----------Why not? DOCTOR----Because we're not on the Liberator. AVON-------Then where the hell are we? DOCTOR----In space. BLAKE------What?! DOCTOR----It's quite all right, I assure you. I didn't have time to program the co-ordinates. I only managed the dematerialisation codes. AVON-------Oh, marvellous (!) DOCTOR----We did leave in rather a hurry. AVON-------And who's fault was that? ACE----------Oh, belt up Avon! Give your gob a rest. DOCTOR----I'll take you back very shortly. Now Benton, look at me. BENTON----What? DOCTOR----Look into my eyes. BENTON----I don't know what sort of game you're playing Doc, but I..... DOCTOR----Did you love Servalan at the beginning? BENTON----No. DOCTOR----Then, when? BENTON----After I'd eaten and fallen asleep. DOCTOR----But before that you hated her and wanted to go home? BENTON----Yes. DOCTOR----You remember everything now, don't you Benton? BENTON----Yes. Yes, I do. What did she do to me? DOCTOR----A rather clever little love drug, with a dose of amnesia thrown in for luck. BENTON----The bitch! VILA---------I couldn't put it better myself. DOCTOR----Well, you're free of her now. BENTON----Thanks Doc. I don't know how I'll ever repay you. DOCTOR----You don't have to. Right, let's get Blake, Vila and Avon back to the Liberator and then take you home. AVON-------At last!
----------------------------------------
RANI---------That sounds like the Doctor's Tardis. CALLY------Maybe you'll leave now. RANI---------Not yet. CALLY------Hadn't you better go to him? RANI---------No. He can come to me.
---------------------------------------
DOCTOR----Well, here we are, safe and sound. VILA---------Speak for yourself. DOCTOR----I was. VILA---------Oh. DOCTOR----Time to say goodbye again. AVON-------Just like that? DOCTOR----Just like that. AVON-------No gratitude for us risking our necks to help you. DOCTOR----I am eternally grateful Avon. But it's time to get Benton here back to twentieth century Earth. BLAKE------Aren't you going to say goodbye to Cally? DOCTOR----Oh, of course. I hope she's repaired the teleport. BLAKE------So do we. VILA---------I don't. BLAKE------Why not? VILA---------Because then we can stay up here in safety. AVON-------Safety? With the Federation chasing us? VILA---------I'd rather not think about that. Do you have to spoil everything, Avon? AVON-------Where you're concerned, yes. VILA---------Thought so. BLAKE------Come on. Let's go and see Cally. VILA---------Can't I have a drink first? To celebrate, naturally. BLAKE------What's there to celebrate? VILA---------Not being killed. AVON-------Any excuse. VILA---------You know me better than that, Avon. I don't need an excuse to get drunk. AVON-------I'm glad you said that and not me. BLAKE------Later, Vila. VILA---------How much later? BLAKE------Once the Doctor and his friends have gone. VILA---------He's gone already. BLAKE------No he hasn't. He's beside you. VILA---------I meant, in the head. ACE----------That's not a very nice thing to say, Vila. VILA---------It was a joke. Besides, he has now. ACE----------Watch it. VILA---------I meant gone. Look. BLAKE------He must have got tired of waiting and gone to the teleport. Come on. Doctor? Doctor, where are you? VILA---------There he is. Why's he got his hands in the air? AVON-------Dusting? BLAKE------Doctor, why have you.... Who are you? DOCTOR----It's the Rani. VILA---------Friend of yours? DOCTOR----Not exactly. RANI---------We were at school together. VILA---------Lovely. A reunion. RANI---------You could say that. I've waited a long time for you Doctor. DOCTOR----Nice to be wanted. RANI---------Isn't it (!) AVON-------Haven't we met somewhere before? RANI---------Probably. AVON-------You were on the space station. ACE----------That's right. She was having a cosy chat with that Servalan. RANI---------We go back a long way. AVON-------I thought you might. DOCTOR----You didn't have to tear yourself away for my benefit. RANI---------I didn't. It was for mine. DOCTOR----Oh. RANI---------You flatter yourself, Doctor. Then again, egomaniacs always do. DOCTOR----Speaking from experience? RANI---------Shut up! BENTON----Come on, Doc. VILA---------Yeah. Why don't you do something? AVON-------Because he obviously enjoys endangering innocent people. ACE----------Since when did you become Snow White? VILA---------There's no answer to that. AVON-------Then don't wear yourself out thinking of one. DOCTOR----What do you want, Rani? RANI---------I've already told you. CALLY------She's got Dayna. BLAKE------Where? CALLY------On the station, somewhere. RANI---------Which is where that primitive should be. AVON-------Which one (?) RANI---------Benson, or whatever his name is. AVON-------Oh, what a shame. For a while I thought she was going to say you, Vila. RANI---------Why isn't he there? DOCTOR----Because he's standing there. I thought that was obvious. RANI---------No matter. It's time we left. DOCTOR----So soon? RANI---------Problem with that? DOCTOR----Not at all. RANI---------You. VILA---------Me? What do you want me for? I haven't done anything. Take Avon instead. RANI---------I'm not going to take anyone. AVON-------You miss out again, Vila. Never mind, I'm sure one day someone will want you. VILA---------Remember Avon, she doesn't want you either. RANI---------Stop this squabbling! You, Vila. VILA---------Yes? RANI---------Get me a bracelet. VILA---------Certainly. Any particular sort? RANI---------One for this contraption, you idiot! VILA---------Sorry. What do you want it for? RANI---------Give it to the Doctor. VILA---------Why don't you let him get it himself? RANI---------Are you trying to be funny? AVON-------He always tries, but never succeeds. VILA---------And I won't say what you suc.... I'll get the bracelet. RANI---------Good. DOCTOR----Oh, very pretty. What do I do with it? VILA---------You already know.... Er, how pretty it is. You saw them before. From a distance. RANI---------Put it on. DOCTOR----Where exactly? It's too big to go through my nose, and too small for my neck. RANI---------Never mind, Doctor. I'm sure there's something in my Tardis which will go around your neck. It may be a little on the tight side, however. DOCTOR----Ah, I see you've got one on your wrist. I'll try that. Fits perfectly. It doesn't go with my clothes though. RANI---------Neither does your face, but we can't have everything. BLAKE------What about Dayna? RANI---------I'll send her back. AVON-------Then shouldn't you take a bracelet for her? RANI---------She can have the Doctor's. DOCTOR----Wonderful (!) RANI---------And mine. We won't be needing them. Especially you, Doctor. DOCTOR----I had a feeling I wouldn't. RANI---------Move. DOCTOR----Me? RANI---------Of course! Get over there! DOCTOR----You only had to ask nicely.
As the Doctor moved, he tripped and fell on top of the bracelets. He pocketed one very quickly then stepped into the teleport.
DOCTOR----Sorry. New shoes. RANI---------If any of you follow, I won't hesitate in killing the Doctor. Do you understand? Good. Put us down. DOCTOR----I'll see you soon. RANI---------Don't count on it.
Cally operated the controls and the Doctor and the Rani disappeared.
ACE----------Now what do we do? BLAKE------We get Dayna back and then think of something. DAYNA-----Cally, teleport now! CALLY------It could be a trick like last time. BLAKE------Just do it! CALLY------Okay. Dayna! Thank goodness you're safe. DAYNA-----You're telling me (!) ACE----------Now can we discuss how to rescue the Doctor? VILA---------Here we go again!
----------------------------------
DOCTOR----Where are we going? RANI---------Shut up and keep moving. DOCTOR----What are you going to do to me, then? RANI---------I'd have thought that was obvious. DOCTOR----And I'd have thought you'd prefer an audience. RANI---------Stop. DOCTOR----Have we arrived? RANI---------Yes. DOCTOR----Good. My feet are killing me. RANI---------They won't be the only ones. DOCTOR----There's no need to be nasty. RANI---------Open the door. DOCTOR----Okay (opens door). Now I suppose we go inside. RANI---------It's nice to see a glimmer of intelligence in you. Pity it doesn't surface very often. Get in.
-------------------------------------------
GUARD 1----I want you to go to the President and tell her the Rani has just gone into her room. GUARD 2----Yes, sir. GUARD 1----And be quick about it. GUARD 2----Sir!
-------------------------------------------
DOCTOR----I still don't understand why you've got it in for me. RANI---------Oh, you don't (?) DOCTOR----No. What did I ever do to you that makes you hate me so much? RANI---------For a start there was that business on Earth during your previous disfigurement. DOCTOR----You were stealing their brain fluid. RANI---------And you tampered with my Tardis! DOCTOR----I like to make myself useful. RANI---------And then there was Lakertya. DOCTOR----You deserved everything you got. RANI---------And how do you work that out? DOCTOR----First, I regenerated. Second, you gave me an amnesia drug while I was unconcious - not playing fair I must say, and thirdly you pretended to be Mel and that Mel was you. I've often wondered. Did you have fun with the Tetraps? RANI---------I refuse to discuss it with a pathetic excuse for a Time Lord such as you. DOCTOR----Full of compliments, aren't you? RANI---------That's enough talk. DOCTOR----What shall we do instead? How about a game of cards? Monopoly? Yes, monopoly's quite good. RANI---------I've had enough of this foolery, Doctor. DOCTOR----I'm only trying to make conversation. RANI---------You're only trying to delay the inevitable. Prepare to die, Doctor. DOCTOR----It's been done before and it only resulted in another regeneration. RANI---------I've already thought of that, Doctor. DOCTOR----Somehow I thought you might. RANI---------Say goodbye to life, Doctor. SERVALAN---I want a word with you, Rani. RANI---------Can't it wait, Servalan? I'm rather busy at the moment. SERVALAN---No it can't. DOCTOR----Sorry I can't stay. RANI---------You're not going anywhere, Doctor! DOCTOR----Oh, yes I am. Can somebody please get me up, please? CALLY------I'm teleporting you now, Doctor. DOCTOR----Thank you very much. It will be nice to enjoy pleasant company again. See you. Not too soon I hope.
The Doctor vanished and the Rani swore in Gallifreyan.
RANI---------Thanks a lot Servalan! That was the best chance I've had of getting the Doctor. SERVALAN---Never mind all that. Guards, take her to a cell. RANI---------What have I done? SERVALAN---You betrayed me. RANI---------How? SERVALAN---You brought me Benton only to take him away again. RANI---------I didn't do any such thing. SERVALAN---You're the only one I know who has a craft which disappears into thin air. RANI---------The Doctor has one as well. SERVALAN---Of course he has (!) Lock her up and bring me the key. RANI---------You can't do this to me! SERVALAN---I can and I am. Enjoy your solitude, Rani.
--------------------------------------------
ACE----------So, everything's okay now, Professor? DOCTOR----Yes. I don't know what will happen to the Rani though. VILA---------You never know with Servalan. DOCTOR----No. But I'm sure it won't take the Rani too long to escape. Well, time to go this time. BLAKE------It was good to see you again, Doctor. VILA---------Yeah. Next time bring Leela. DOCTOR----I'll do my best. VILA---------And try and have the same face. DOCTOR----I'll do my best to keep this one as long as possible. Come on Ace, Benton. Goodbye. BLAKE------Bye, Doctor. VILA---------Bye. Now can I have a drink? AVON-------Good riddance. DOCTOR----I love you too. DAYNA-----Bye. ACE----------See ya. BENTON----Goodbye and thank you for helping me. AVON-------Don't mention it (!)
The crew watched them enter the Tardis, which promptly dematerialised.
BLAKE------Right, let's attack the space station. VILA---------Couldn't we have a rest first? No? Oh, well.
--------------------------------------
DOCTOR----Here we are, Mister Benton. Home sweet.... BENTON----Car yard? DOCTOR----Precisely. BENTON----Thanks Doc. I don't know what would've happened if you hadn't helped me. DOCTOR----You'd be a married man. ACE----------Fancy waking up every day next to her. Horrible thought. BENTON----At least you didn't have to do it, miss. ACE----------Not my type! BENTON----Thanks again Doc. DOCTOR----That's all right. What are friends for? Well, we must be going. BENTON----Do you have to? DOCTOR----I'm afraid so. BENTON----What about our chat about old times? DOCTOR----It'll have to wait. Maybe I'll pop forward a few years and see you then. BENTON----Don't forget me. DOCTOR----As if. Take care of yourself. BENTON----I will. ACE----------And beware of used car buyers. BENTON----I'll hire an assistant to deal with all that. DOCTOR----Goodbye. ACE----------Yeah. See ya around. BENTON----Bye Doc.
Benton watched the Tardis disappear and decided to go home and have a large drink. Meanwhile, in the Tardis....
DOCTOR----Right Ace. Before you get comfortable, you can mend those timers once and for all. ACE----------And what if I don't? DOCTOR----I'll make sure you never carry another canister as long as you travel with me. ACE----------I'm going. DOCTOR----Good.
The End
