From the SunCorrie cutey Sam Aston is clearly not ready for life as a soap heart-throb. The 11 year old, who plays young Chesney, found himself surrounded by girl fans in Bury, Greater Manchester. One onlooker said " Sam looked terrified. He just clung on to his Mum with both hands and refused to look at them " Ahh bless him.

Interesting point, Nick. But he's growing up now, isn't he? Taller than Gail. Maybe he wouldn't mind being the next sex symbol.

I wrote a letter to Jack P Shepherd last year and got a reply. I had told him what a great actor he was and he would probably have a long career. In his letter back to me he put " You say you think I have a long career ahead of me, I don't know about that. In this business you can be the flavour of the month one minute and out of work the next I just take it as it comes, I'm a big believer in fate." I'll have to write to Sam now!

Jack's very wise for his age, isn't he? Wish others were as realistic. There's too many getting through drama school because they've paid a fee, regardless of how good they are. So many wonderful actors are either unemployed or in theatre since on TV it's usually looks over talent and the same people hired for jobs. Peter Davison (though he has his own good career) gets very huffy at ex-soap stars taking all the work.

Maybe his parents have instilled politeness in him and told him to always reply. I know Lucille Ball did with her children because she says the fans are very important.

I think it may have quite a bit to do with the fact that the whole family of Aston offspring ( and there are about 8 ) are all connected to the acting profession.
So young Sam, being the youngest, will have had those sort of manners instilled in him.

That's true, sooty. Too many youngsters are ill-mannered and thugs.

Many actors prefer the theatre having an audience right there in front of you must make you want to perform your best every night.

True. There's more connection with the audience and instant reaction. Though some don't touch it with a bargepole. Patrick Troughton is quoted as calling it "shouting at night". LOL!

I remember Liza Zavaroni - she had a terrible time :child star, pressure, rejection, anorexia. This should never be inflicted on any kid. I gather now that TV companies counsel young ones on what to expect so they don't get too freaked and let it ruin everything. Let kids be kids, I say.

I agree, pearly. What happened to Lena was just terrible. These kids mags don't help with the obsession with looks and weight (same with Sexiest awards). Anorexia and bulimia are on the increase and nothing's being done. Kids are made to grow up way too fast these days. So yes, let kids be kids. And drop PC so they can get dirty and fall over.

That's true. He's 11 though, not that that makes much difference. I wonder whether his parents put it all into a savings bond thing for when he's older.

I should imagine so but they're keeping his feet well and truly on the ground. Even at his school (or drama school) he doesn't necessarily get the best parts just because he's become famous.
