GREAT PAIN
Chesney's tears as pet dog fights for his life
By Brian Roberts
SCHMEICHEL the dog is to be knocked down in a Coronation Street road accident, leaving owner Chesney Brown sobbing by his side.
Viewers will see bus driver Claire Peacock (Julia Haworth) distracted when her young son Joshua (Benjamin Beresford) spots her at the wheel and runs out in front of her vehicle.
Claire swerves to avoid him and also misses young Chesney (Sam Aston) but smashes into the Great Dane.
A Corrie insider revealed: "The dog will be seen being rushed into the veterinary hospital on a trolley and hooked up to a saline drip.
"Schmeichel has suffered massive internal injuries and his life signs are draining away fast. So he's rushed straight into the operating theatre.
"The vets battle to save his life but the best they tell Chesney is that Schmeichel's life is now out of their hands - and they should all prepare themselves for the worst.
"At the episode's end, Chesney is hugging the unconscious dog and crying: 'No, Schmeichel. Please don't die. Please don't leave me. You're all I've got. I love you. I love you'.
"It's heartbreaking and the big question will be ... does he survive?"
Another source said of the episode to be screened in May: "We can guarantee viewers will be in tears as well."
Meanwhile Schmeichel, named after ex-Manchester United keeper Peter Schmeichel, has been named Britain's favourite celebrity pet.
He won 70 per cent of the votes in a national poll commissioned by Asda, which said: "It isn't hard to see why. He is a beautiful dog with a really placid nature. People have clearly taken him to their hearts."
