From the People:
VERA BUCKS-WORTH Jun 19 2005 By Debbie Manley CORONATION Street star Liz Dawn has signed a new two-year contract quashing rumours that she is about to retire.
Liz, 65, earns around #150,000 a year for playing the nation's favourite Vera Duckworth.
And despite speculation that her health's not good, Liz has no plans to quit the role she played for the past 31 years.
Speaking to The People from her Manchester home, she said: "I've read stories about my health with people hinting I may be leaving but that is rubbish. I've only just signed a new two-year deal.
"I'm very happy on the show and have no intention of quitting."
Her husband Don added: "Liz isn't as young as she used to be but she gets plenty of breaks to keep her fresh.
"We've got a villa in the Costa del Sol and have been out there eight times so far this year. Liz is more than capable of coping with the workload." He also hinted that Liz's on-screen husband Jack, played by Bill Tarmy, 64, is about to sign a new contract too.
Don said: "They both get on so well. Jack without Vera or Vera without Jack just wouldn't seem right after all the years they've been together."
In October, it was claimed Jack and Vera would win the lottery and be written out. Liz's been plagued by headaches and ulcers and Bill's had two heart attacks and a stroke.
But fans demanded that they stay. An insider said: "Liz and Bill are the King and Queen of Corrie."

Good news them staying. I can't imagine a Jackless and Veraless Corrie

Me neither. They're Corrie's equivalent of George and Mildred.

I am so glad to hear they will be around for a few more years. They are such a big part of the Street. In a few years it is going to be very different, with a lot of the older characters retired.

Won't be as good then because they haven't got the characters to replace them. They keep getting rid of ordinary ones like Harry, Martin, Curly, Patrick etc (mainly from underuse which is their fault) and hiring people for looks who never stay and, like KF, are using it as a stepping stone when they have no talent.

Please no! are we ever gonna get rid of her?! I hate Vera she is an annoying so and so... She does my head in... And i think she is an appaling actress too... She belongs in EastEnders... No real emtion or feelings at all... No wonder Jack doesnt wanna go anywhere near her... LOL.

LOL Jade! You really hate the oldies, don't you? I must admit, I much preferred Vera in the old days. Now all she does is bugger all and pull faces. Though dragging Jack out of the pub by his ear the other week was more like the Vera of the 80s.

LOL! I like the oldies but then I'm getting on a bit myself. They get given ridiculous storylines that never last. The longest for ages (not including Ken) was Emily when Richard wanted to kill her I think. And Norris has more words to say then Reet for less salary! That's not right, is it? Patsy

So glad they are staying. I just hope they give them some decent scenes/storylines to do.

Doubt it. Did you read that letter on Teletext today (142 or something) saying "we" are sick of Sally, Shelley and the wrinklies. She clearly speaks for herself. Less crappy wooden youngsters who are hired for looks or through some sort of nepotism and more people over 50!

Shelly id agree with getting rid of but Sally and the oldies are the last people id get rid of. I have very few fave characters among the young characters, most of my fave's are the cast over 40.

Yes. It's not Sally's fault really she's been given rubbish from stage mother to this current drivel. It's the writers. If that person wants no one but youngsters, they should watch Hollyoaks! When I was growing up there were more older characters than young ones in it. More oldies!!!!!!!!!

Patsy Well we will have to agree to disagree about the current Sally storylines, ive really enjoyed them and as I said before Sally saved certain episodes recently. I agree, if you want oldies watch Hollyoaks - I used to love Hollyoaks 5-7 years ago as it was about characters my own age, I still watch now just not as regular but im not sure if thats because the characters are mainly younger than me or because it gone crap. The person who wrote that letter might have a point though, Corrie could head for a slump, its not brilliant at the moment so im hoping its the summer lull period but if that Shelly rubbish is going to dominate the autumn storylines too who knows what will happen.

They`re redeaming themselves by getting rid of Candice. I don`t believe the codswollop Nikki spouts about "I`ve enjoyed my time on Corrie blah blah blah. It`s time for me to try my hand at other things." Blah blah blah. In laymans terms she got the push because her character was going nowhere. Credit us Corrie fans with more sense!!!!
I`m glad Vee is staying, and Jack too. Corrie wouldn`t be the same without them. I know there will be a time when she will decide to leave Coronation Street, so i`m just enjoying her wheile I can. I can remember my mother saying years ago when Hilda left that she`ll never watch Coronation Street again. But 21+ years later and my mother is still watching it ;D

Well I dont mind Candice that much, id prefer it if Maria went instead (my brother will kill me for even suggesting that as he likes her LOL!) but Candice isnt one of my fave's either.
I was flicking through a soap mag in the shop and we havent got long left of Warren now. He was saying how he was happy to be the sexiest male in Corrie as voted at the soap awards - however he was only up against Jason and Charlie so was always likely to get the highest votes out of those in Corrie.
LOL! I cant imagine Corrie being on air and me not watching - i'll always watch it even if it does go down the route of being poor. And i'd miss it lots if it ended.

And it's down to the writers what they do. And if they can keep coming up with stuff for Ken after nearly 45 years, there's no excuses. My aunt gave up after Richard saying it was boring and she's still not watching now. Good job because I think Ray's stomach cancer would have been too much for her coming so close after losing her eldest son to it. Patsy

I missed Crossroads a lot when it ended but you get used to it. Corrie has improved since Kieran left but there's still far too many boring eps by far. Patsy
