Anyone else see the first episode last night?
We thought it was brilliant - possibly the best new show on TV this year.
Dark, funny, well-written, and superbly acted. Benedict Cumberbatch absolutely right as Holmes, Martin Freeman excellent as Watson, and with Rupert Graves (one of C's favourite actors) and Una Stubbs.
The premise is that Holmes has simply been moved to modern times, so there are no references to him ever existing before, either in truth or fiction. Watson is an ex-army medic, and Holmes is a consultant detective, helping out the police with difficult cases.
Some lovely use of modern trivia - Holmes using nicotine patches instead of smoking opium, and we 'see' his thoughts as text messages appearing on the screen.
Unfortunately only three episodes, but going on last night's opener, we're in for a treat!
10/10

I loved this. Bringing it up to date was a terrific idea, and the two lead actors worked well together. The story was very good, and very cleverly written thanks to Stephen Moffat and Mark Gatiss (who also wrote the latest series of Doctor Who ) Sadly there are only three episodes....I would love it to end up being a series.

Maybe it will if it's a success.

The only thing that puzzles me is if they are bringing Holmes into the 21st century thus losing all of it's original premise of him being a legendary Victorian detective why not just write a series about a new character instead of one that is already established ..why have the Holmes connection at all?..oh hang on silly me...Holmes is world known, already famous, guaranteed to get an audience and is likely to sell to American due to the big budget film that has just been released... ...

Just started watching the repeats of this first series - if anything it's even better second time around! Lots of little things I missed on first viewing.
Not surprised it was so well received.
A real class act.

I love this version of Sherlock.
Did you know that Benedict Cumberbatch's parents are the actors Venda Ventham and Timothy Carlton. ? Quite a pedigree.

Yes, it was good. I love his annoying brother Mycroft.

Complaints about the nudity yet no one seemed to notice it in the umpteen zillion trailers they'd shown. LOL!

What a load of absolute b*llocks! Some people are never happy unless they have something to complain about.
There WAS no actual nudity seen by the viewer - or at least nothing in the least bit risque. Yes, the actress was naked, but it was all implied nakedness (for us) by clever camera angles.
Certainly nothing to frighten the horses. Maybe these viewers should spend more time watching the repeated violence on shows like Eastenders, before they start banging on about 'watersheds'?

LOL! Very true, Paul. I didn't watch but knew her back at least was on show from the teatime trailers. Maybe the poor sensitive souls should take up gardening to get them away from the evil goggle box. Bet they were the ones who complained about Len Goodman saying sod.

Just finished watching 'The Hounds of Baskerville' (sic). Brilliant re-interpretation of the original story.
Can't wait for Sunday's (last) episode when Moriarty returns!

It may be the last too. Martin Freeman said on the One Show he has no idea if there'll be more.

OMG What an ending. How the devil did he do that. There will be a series three.
According to Mark Gatiss on twittrt, series three was commisioned at the same time as series two.

I suspect it had something to do with Molly. If you remember, Sherlock said there was something he wanted from her?
Great news about a third series too!

I didn't realise Mark Gatiss played Sherlock's brother Mycroft. Anyway, in answer to all the people asking how he did it...he said the answer was in the episode. Seemingly, Sherlock did or said something that was totally out of character which was the clue ?? I can't remember

The Mail are spending too much time analysing this. It was probably a variation on the original way.

I suspect it had something to do with Molly. If you remember, Sherlock said there was something he wanted from her? Great news about a third series too! Yes, she definitely helped him because she's besotted with him. Possibly she managed to dope John Watson, and then Sherlock arranged for the cyclist to run him over, so he didn't correctly witness Sherlock's 'fall'. Possibly Sherlock managed to chuck a dummy off the roof, and she was waiting at the bottom, and as a doctor, identified it as him and certified it officially dead, while John was still confused from his collision with the cyclist. I wonder if Mycroft is in on it? He must be - he'd be a pretty poor MI5 agent if he hadn't sussed Sherlock's scam. Also I hope that Moriarty faked it, and will be back. He's such a strange and weedy Supervillain - fascinating!

Just watched first episode of the new series - as good as ever! Just soooo classy - fantastic production and graphics, great acting by absolutely everyone, great dialogue, and humour as well as excitement - what's not to like? 9.2 million viewers - pretty good for a drama show. Definitely worth the wait.

Nice little cameo in it from Benedict Cumberbatch's real life parents. Great episode.
