Back in the 1970s, this was my favourite TV series. Carol had never seen it, so we watched Series One on VHS tapes about 12 years ago. All three series were finally released on DVD a couple of years ago, so we bought a set, and started watching last week. Have now watched all of Series One again, and due to start others shortly. IMO, this is far, far superior to the 2008 remake. Very original and totally believable concept, and just as relevant today as it was in 1975. Yes, there are some editing issues, and some of the acting is a bit 'soap-y', but the whole concept is far grittier, and far more realistic, than the sensationalised 'new' version. Quality of exterior shots is not the greatest, but they were using very low-tech stuff to make it, and in a way, it adds to the realism. It stands the test of time amazingly well (38 years old!), and it more than justifies the cult status it has gained. Now looking forward to watching Series 2 & 3! Excellent, detailed entry on Wikipedia:- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Survivors_%281970s_TV_series%29

I don't remember this.......must check it out
my favourite series from my youth was Timeslip it was a childrens series (I was about 12 at the time) but it didn't treat kids as idiots...it was a very well written sci-fi series and tackled issues such as Global warming, cloning and climate change .... and all 40 years ago, things that are relevant today

I was a big fan of this back in the day. The remake wasn't as good (there again, what remake ever is!) Those were the days when you had heard of all of the cast. ;D
I believe Terry Nation (Dr Who) was behind it.

I saw it on UK Gold when it was a great channel. Series 3 became really soapy but I enjoyed the first two.

My boyfriend is mad to see the original Survivors but we are waiting to run into something affordable. He has The Prisoner, UFO, Space 1999 and loads of old Avengers. I did well in getting some clearout stock before but this Survivors has been elusive. I do have the Timeslip set, unfortunate so many episodes exist only in black & white though. I also was amazed to get the whole Upstairs Downstairs 5 seasons set for around 30 UK pounds, or $50 U.S. and am really enjoying it and the extras lately! I just got a series titled The Moon Stallion to add to such things as Ace Of Wands, Tomorrow people, The Tyrant King, Supercar, Sky, The Owl Service, and Children Of The Stones! I wish they could put out the original Phoenix And The Carpet series, or find the first two seasons of Ace Of Wands. There are rumours of some missing Dr. Who being found.

I can play Region 2 PAL, but only with the computer or a laptop. Well I have a mini player too that sometimes can play them on anything, but sometimes not. I prefer to get the Region 1 NTSC when it exists.

www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/info/multiregion/If you go to this website you may be able to find your player to do a region hack..I did it with my old player because I had some American DVD's that wouldn't play on my region 2 player.....if your player is listed you follow the instructions and it makes it region free ... make sure you get the exact make and model though

That's a really useful link Nick - didn't even realize such an option existed!

Just started watching Series 3, which I never saw 'back in the day'. You're right Patsy - the quality isn't a patch on the first two series - poor acting, and pretty awful camerawork and production, almost as if it had been taken over by a load of amateurs. Also noticeable that a lot of existing characters were suddenly being played by different actors (Ruth, Lizzie, Ingrid to name a few). I did a fair amount of research, so I know that there were serious problems, all of which probably combined to produce this very poor follow-up. It was made during the time of major industrial disputes, which affected BBC film-making adversely. They were also short of money, which would explain the very shabby quality of some of the footage (cameras were past their best). There was also (allegedly) some friction between certain cast members, and to cap it all the final episode was supposed to be a double-length one, and ended up being edited down to a single episode. IMO it still deserves its cult status, despite all the above. Great shame - this show had the potential to go on for years. That said, we will grit our teeth and watch the rest of it.

Hmmmm...maybe I should have waited until the end before I passed comment! Seems first two episodes of Series 3 were very weak, but episodes 3 & 4 were much better all round. Film quality still poor, but much better acting, and exciting, thought-provoking stuff! ...lets see how the rest are.

I looked at the 'hacks' but my Sony is close but not exactly like one shown. I might try it as we have a universal remote.
