Actor Nigel Pivaro's flat has been raided by police and a large number of fire-arms removed. Also a van outside the property has been searched - the police have not commented on what was found in the van or their reasons for the whole incident .... Granada News - Sat. 04.11 @ 4.45pm.

Years ago it was reported in the papers that he was (voluntarily) living rough in some woods - fending for himself; I think Nigel sees himself as some sort of Commando type, and it's not surprising that he keeps a lot of weapons on the premises - all part of his Rambo fantasy.

That would explain a lot. In the part of Salford where his flat is it's advisable to have some means of protection.
Apparently he wasn't there but the police are waiting to interview him. He's surprised that they broke in and is consulting a solicitor - so no doubt we'll hear more as it progresses.
As he's now a journalist for one of the local papers he'll probably write the story himself - maybe that's what it's all about.

I thought he was working as a journalist for a paper over here. That was the latest a few weeks ago. Or am I thinking of someone else?

You could be right, maybe he's freelance. He's certainly had features in the Manchester Evening News but that doesn't really mean anything does it?
