I think it's a case of quality versus quantity (at least that's what it is for me), when a programme has more episodes a week they get to spend less time on each one. I want 3 episodes a week too, cut the second monday one and the Friday one.
Having said that Corrie still must be doing something right as for me it is the only watchable Bristish soap. No other soap does comedy like Corrie.
If I was producer I would stop bringing in new characters and spend some time fleshing out the characters that are already established and establish some solid friendships among the younger cast. At the moment there seems to be too much emphasis on who is with who, it seems that young females can't exsist without a partner. The likes of Maria and Violet should be allowed to shown as being young, free and single and just having fun.
I'd deffinately keep Blanche, Norris, Fizz, Kirk, Eileen, Jason, Violet, Sean, Liz, Steve, Ken, Deidre and Michelle.
There isn't anyway that I'm in a real hurry to get rid of.
I would burn some of the characters wardrobes though, ecspecially those hats Sarah has started wearing lately.

I agree with you there, lostinlondon. I grew up when it was twice a week. Storylines never needed to be sensational to get ratings, characters were memorable and better than they are now and the writing was better. Then along came EE with its copying of Brookside and the beginning of the decline began with them going 3 times first. It was still good and people never got bored with the storylines so quickly the way they do now. They were also the first to go 4 then 5. Emmerdale has really suffered since going 6, which the cast, crew and a lot of fanswere against. Corrie has gone the same way. They replace a type with a type then have similar storylines. All there is these days are sex, unplanned pregancies and villainy. They also tend to use the same characters all the time at the expense of others while they get given stuid things not worthy of their ability to justify still having a contract. Storylines are also recycled far too often. In the past five years five people had their heads bashed in (four of whom died). In 18 months there were three jiltings at the altar. With too many episodes and characters thanks to ITV's greed, the show has suffered to become unimaginitive and predictable. Storylines drag on forever going around in circles. You could have something long running in the past when there was less episodes and it never became boring.
So in answer to amysoniacosmokate (why do you have four names?), no I don't like Corrie. I gave up in July 2005 after 27 years and it was surprisingly easy to switch off. My mum also stopped watching after 34 years. My aunt stopped in 2003 after watching since episode one.

I agree with Patsy...we have thrashed htis out many times on here ;D
Less is more...loads of characters have nothing to do (Eileen,Emily,Norris,Rita,Kirk,Tyrone,Vera,Jack,Molly,Vernon,Liz,Dev,Amber,Roy,Hayley) while others get bombareded with storylines to stop them from leaving (Jamie,Cilla,Steve,Tracey, danny & Frankie (when they were there),Sarah,David)
call yourself Alyson then...i call myself Nick..its much easier lol

My friend and I were discussing TV the other day and we got on to the subject of Eastenders and then what storyline made us switch off.
Which brings me to my questions, has there been any Coronation Storyline that you've refused to watch or that nearly stopped you watching?

Alyson is so much easier to remember too. Those eight episodes during the Mad Maya climax weren't needed. Only two of them were any good. The rest were padding. During 2002 it was all Richard Hillman. 2003-2006 all Tracy Barlow and Shelley. There will be no great characters in the future or even remembered the way the long gone greats lke Annie Walker, the Ogdens, Elsie Tanner, Ena Sharples etc are. That's down to the greed of ITV as well as the underuse and rubbish writing. Even my favourite Rita is crap compared to what she was and I don't even enjoy her bits (which is all I watch usually weeks later) any more. Patsy

Nick did a post here in 2005 saying that was the day Corrie died. Can't remember what it was and he switched off but went back.

This is the one Patsy.... A very sad day today..Monday 1st August 2005...I have to announce the death of Coronation Street...It was taken from us suddenly at the age of 44.It didn't suffer for long approximatley 6 months from the peak of health to its final gasp. seriously..Tonights epsiodes were the worst 2 episodes I have ever seen. They were boring, unfunny, repetitious, ridiculous. In the old days if Tracey had tried that "Steve threatened me" crap..Deirdre would have said "I want a word with you lady"..she just wouldnt stand for it,If anyone knows about false accusations its Deirdre So its goodbye From me Corrie..i have finally given up..I shall still come in here for the Quiz and to chat..but as for the programme..I have watched my last episode and it breaks my heart..I have watched Corrie for over 30 years I lasted 6 weeks .......i have stuck by my guns with Emmerdale tho....

I still like it, it's enjoyable to watch and there's some great characters although some of them barely get any screen time. But I also think that it's seen better days, I think they need to go back to basics for a while.

I much prefer EE these days and always hated it. None of these much-publicised Corrie spoilers are getting me interested enough to watch whereas I can't wait for the next ep on EE. Been such a long time since that happened with Corrie.

I think it depends on how long you've been watching Coronation Street as to how much you think it's declined. I've only been watching for 5 years (on and off for the first 3) because when I was living at home we weren't allowed TV on when Coronation Street was on or I was out. It was only when I moved away to university that I became hooked. So I didn't really watch it the years that everyone class as the best.
The only soap I did watch was Neighbours and Eastenders and only then because Eastenders had an omnimbus that was on a Sunday.
My main annoyance with Corrie is the 5 episodes just because I think it's too much, they could put what we have in 5 episodes in 3 and do it just as well. Also those in charge obviously favour certain characters and they aren't even the strongest characters on the street (or the strongest actors for the matter).

That is so true, lostinlondon. Also I think for a lot of people it's just habit. I kept watching hoping it would get better but it didn't. Even Jez agrees at the time I gave up it was a dire period. A lot of us are old enough to remember what it used to be like at twice a week. When the 70s DVDs came out I zipped through them but was still struggling with the current not to clock watch which helped with my decision to stop completely. Even terrific writers like John Stevenson and Peter Whalley who had been there decades and wrote some of the greatest episodes in the show's history were coming out with boring scripts. It's sad the way it's declined.
Answer to Alyson's question - no one.

If I could date anyone from Coronation Street it would be, erm, I can't decide if I'm being shallow then probably Liam if I want someone who I think I would get on with then I think it would have to be Steve.
