And I do realise that it is slightly worrying that this even crossed my mind. BUT - it did - and I thought I'd bring it to the table!!
Ryan Connor - why is he so-called?! Presumably we're meant to believe that Michelle was married to his dad Dean - and even if she wasn't: Connor is HER maiden name, so why is his surname Connor? Wouldn't it be more believable for his surname to be whatever Dean's was? And Michelle's, really, for that matter
I'm glad I got that off my chest! Its been bothering me for a few episodes now!!

I wondered that too Madison. I guess either Michelle kept her maiden name or she wasnt married to Dean at all.

But even then often the kids still get their father's name.

True. My sister isnt married to her boyfriend so has the same surname as me, but the kids have their father's name. So unless Dean's surname was Connor too it looks like the scriptwriters forgot or couldnt be bothered coming up with a name and hoped we wouldnt notice!

We know they think the viewers are stupid. Maddie's shown they aren't by spotting their mistake or laziness.

Its not so strange...In Lousiana its possible in some redneck familes for a man to get divorced and marry again and still retain the same inlaws. Must be the same in some parts of Ireland too ;D

All joking aside, remember when Elsie Tanner got remarried to another Tanner? I remember reading in one of the Corrie autobiographies that it was Pat Pheonix herself who wanted to retain the name Tanner when she divorced Arnold Tanner and married the American Steve Tanner.

I don't think it strange at all - in fact do we know for certain that Michelle was actually married to Dean?
My sister isn't married, has two children, and both have her surname, even tho' their father still lives with them.

How did the writer explain Elsie Howard? Hey wasn't the Elsie-obsessed DL by any chance? Never mind Ireland. Doing my family tree last year I came across distant branches in Norfolk who married each other. Hasn't she said Dean was her husband? Patsy

A lot of couples refer to their partners as 'the missus' or 'the hubby' even though they aren't married...

I always thought that Michelle was unmarried, and Dean was her partner.
I can't remember her referring to him as her husband until recently. Has anyone noticed if she wears a wedding ring or not.?

Dunno. That ugly black ring she wears is so massive it takes preference over anything else she wears.

Well she bangs on about being a widow, so i would presume that she was married. She's said a few times about losing a husband. Its not very likely that the kid would have taken her name if they were supposedly the love of each other's lives and all the rest of it. I think the writers have just forgotten! Bloody incompetents

I don't think they really thought it through and, as usual, make it up as they go along.

How did the writer explain Elsie Howard? Hey wasn't the Elsie-obsessed DL by any chance? LOL I guess it was pushing it a but to say she married 3 men with the surname Tanner! Tonight she mentioned that Dean was her husband. Also I noticed someone wrote into Teletext asking the same question - why is her surname Connor when she was married to Dean.

Also....being as most of their family live in Ireland and Conner is an Irish name, how come not one of `em has a hint of an Irish accent? I still have my Welsh accent and I`ve lived in the USA over 18 years now

i wondered that too Corriegirl...the parents arrived tonight with thick Irish accents...yet Liam,Michelle and Paul all have/had mancunian accents

Well its been spoken about in the script that they lived on an estate somewhere in Manchester so I assume Paul, Carla and Liam all grew up in Manchester hense the Manc accents. I guess the parents then moved back to Ireland.

They'd still pick up the accent from their parents. My relatives on my dad's side were of Irish decent whereas my dad and his siblings were born and raised in Liverpool. I pronounce things at times with a Scouse accent. The mum of a friend at school was from Bolton abd she'd go northern at times. Another had Scottish family and she'd slip into the burr and we were all southern.

I know someone who lives in Yorkshire, they are Welsh but the kids have a Yorkshire accent from being around other people/kids in school etc.

I didn't say they wouldn't have the accent of the place they live. I said they would slip into their parents accents from time to time because it does happen. I never even noticed until I was 15 and a friend said, "Do you know your accent keeps changing?" My cousins in Bradford have a Scouse dad and Yorkshire mum but still occasionally say things with a Scouse lilt. It can be just a word but it's there.
