Part 1
Deep in the space/time vortex, a blue police telephone box spun on its way to its next destination. Inside, the two occupants were biding their time - a tall man with dark curly hair, and his blonde assistant. Their thoughts were interrupted by a beeping from the hexagonal console in the middle
ROMANA---What's that? DOCTOR----A message. And I thought you were supposed to be cleverer than me. Don't they teach you anything at the Academy, these days? ROMANA---I am, and they do. DOCTOR----Well, that is a matter of opinion. ROMANA---Yes, mine. So, where's the message coming from? DOCTOR----I don't know without looking. ROMANA---May I make a suggestion, Doctor? DOCTOR----By all means. ROMANA---I warn you, it's somewhat radical. DOCTOR----I'm all for new ideas. Go on. ROMANA---Why don't you take a look and find out? DOCTOR----Are you trying to be funny? Ha! ROMANA---What? DOCTOR----It's from Gallifrey. ROMANA---Gallifrey?! DOCTOR----That's what I said, wasn't it, K9? K9------------Affirmative, master. ROMANA---From the President? DOCTOR----Erm, it doesn't say so. ROMANA---Who's it from then? DOCTOR----An old friend, who's invited me for tea and crumpets. Right, I'll just set the co-ordinates and we'll be there in a flash. ROMANA---Doctor. DOCTOR----What? ROMANA---I can't go. DOCTOR----You've got to go back sometime, you know. ROMANA---I know. But not yet. Please. DOCTOR----All right. I'll drop you off at the Eye of Orion, and pick you up later, okay? ROMANA---Thanks, Doctor.
A little later they materialised at the Eye of Orion. Romana followed the Doctor out of the Tardis.
DOCTOR----Right, here we are. ROMANA---So, we are (!) DOCTOR----I could always tie you up and hand you over to the President personally, you know. ROMANA---I'm sorry. DOCTOR----So you should be. I'll be back later. ROMANA---As long as you don't forget about me. DOCTOR----How could I possibly forget about you? ROMANA---It has been known. Erm, Doctor? DOCTOR----Yes? ROMANA---Can I keep K9 with me? DOCTOR----What for? ROMANA---Company. DOCTOR----K9! ROMANA---Thank you, Doctor. DOCTOR----K9? K9------------Master? DOCTOR----I want you to stay with Romana and make sure she doesn't get into trouble. ROMANA---Would I? DOCTOR----It has been known. ROMANA---Touché. K9------------Affirmative, master. DOCTOR----See you later. ROMANA---Bye. DOCTOR----And don't get lost!
Before Romana could answer, the Doctor had shut the doors and started to dematerialise.
ROMANA---Bye, bye, Doctor. Come along, K9. K9------------Mistress.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the galaxy, a battered old planet hopper was in stationary orbit above the planet Fortekor 5.
VILA---------It's crazy! AVON-------What is? VILA---------Throwing your life away on the off chance you'll find Servalan down there so you can kill her. AVON-------Someone has to do it and I don't see you volunteering. VILA---------And, do you blame me? Although, after what you tried to do to me on the shuttle, perhaps it's better that you go. AVON-------And throw my life away. VILA---------Yes. No. AVON-------Which is it, Vila? VILA---------Maybe. SOOLIN-----For once, I agree with Vila. VILA---------Really? Something to celebrate, then. DAYNA------Since when did you need a reason to get drunk, Vila? VILA---------Since I got tangled up with Avon. SOOLIN-----I wish I'd seen that. VILA---------Seen what? SOOLIN-----You and Avon tangled up. What's so funny, Dayna? DAYNA------I was just picturing it. SOOLIN-----Oh, yes. Not a pleasant thought. DAYNA------But then, Vila never was. VILA---------And you know what thought did. DAYNA------No, what? VILA---------Crept up behind you when you're asleep and blew your head off. DAYNA------Getting murderous intentions, Vila? VILA---------Me? Certainly not. I leave all that to Avon. AVON-------We are wasting time! Are you going to put me down, or shall I get Orac to do it? SOOLIN-----We'll do it, but one of us should go with you. AVON-------No! TARRANT---Why not? AVON-------Because, I can do it quicker if I don't have to worry about any of you getting into trouble. TARRANT---But- AVON-------NO, BUTS! I GO ALONE! VILA---------Oh, let him go, Tarrant. AVON-------Thank you, Vila. Somehow I knew you'd back me up. VILA---------Oh, I do, Avon. But, if you get your legs shot off, don't come running to us. AVON-------Very amusing (!) Right, put me down, Tarrant. TARRANT---I still think- AVON-------You think too much and that weakness is going to get you killed one day. VILA---------With you at the other end of the gun, no doubt. AVON-------(smiles) Whatever gives you that idea, Vila? VILA---------Shut up and sod off.
Vila operated the teleport, much to Tarrant's annoyance.
TARRANT---What did you do that for? VILA---------To get some peace and quiet. DAYNA------Then I suggest you shut up, Vila.
Back in the Tardis...
DOCTOR----Home, sweet home (!) Never mind, old girl. We'll soon be away from this horrible place. Won't be long.
The Doctor put on his scarf and hat, opened the doors and went outside where he spotted his friend.
DOCTOR----Leela! LEELA-------Doctor. It is so good to see you again. DOCTOR----And you. How are you keeping? LEELA-------Fine. DOCTOR----And Andred? LEELA-------He is well. DOCTOR----What about, K9? I hope he's behaving himself. LEELA-------He is. I am glad you came. DOCTOR----So, am I. LEELA-------Let me take you to our quarters. DOCTOR----Lead on.
On Scorpio, Vila was getting drunk and mumbling about Avon being insane, while the others were getting anxious.
DAYNA------It's been too long. TARRANT---I agree. Avon should've called in by now. DAYNA------Do you think something's happened to him? VILA---------Oh, I do hope so. SOOLIN-----You would. VILA---------Wouldn't you, if you'd been through what I've been through? SOOLIN-----And what's that, apart from several bottles of booze? VILA---------You don't know what he's capable of. I didn't know what he was capable of until we got that tachyon funnel. DAYNA------And what might that be? VILA---------I don't want to talk about it. DAYNA------Then, stop going on about it. VILA---------Just watch your backs, that's all. TARRANT---I'm going down. DAYNA------Are you sure that's a good idea? SOOLIN-----Avon won't be very happy about it. VILA---------That wouldn't stop him. SOOLIN-----Of, what? VILA---------Sticking a knife between your shoulder blades. But, if that's what you want, Tarrant, go ahead and make Avon's day. TARRANT---It's better than staying up here. And he wouldn't do that, Vila, and you know it. VILA---------That's what you think. But, go ahead. I won't say it's been nice knowing you, Tarrant, because it hasn't. TARRANT---Vila- SLAVE-------Excuse me for interrupting you, sirs. TARRANT---What is it, Slave? SLAVE-------I'm afraid, I have to humbly report, five Federation pursuit ships are approaching, and one has launched a plasma bolt. SOOLIN-----What?! TARRANT---Battle stations! And, that means you too, Vila. VILA---------I'll sit this one out, if it's all the same to you. Makes no difference whether I get killed by the Federation, or Avon. TARRANT---(hauls him up) Well, I do mind, so stop sulking and get to your place!
--------------------------------
DOCTOR----This is nice. LEELA-------I suppose so. DOCTOR----What's wrong, Leela? You don't sound happy. LEELA-------I am happy, Doctor, here with Andred. DOCTOR----But? LEELA-------It is not how I thought it would be. DOCTOR----So, you're bored? LEELA-------Yes. DOCTOR----Now, you know why I left in the first place. LEELA-------Doctor? DOCTOR----Yes? LEELA-------I was wondering.... DOCTOR----Yes? LEELA-------If you would take me away from here. DOCTOR----What?! LEELA-------Just one trip. DOCTOR----For old times' sake? LEELA-------Yes. I would like.... DOCTOR----Yes, Leela? LEELA-------I would like to see Vila again. DOCTOR----Why? LEELA-------To see how he is. DOCTOR----I see. All right, Leela. Come on then. Bring K9.
---------------------------
LEELA-------What is wrong? DOCTOR----I can't seem to find any mention of the Liberator in the databanks. Oh, wait a minute. Here we are. "Liberator destroyed", it says here. LEELA-------Poor Vila. DOCTOR----Don't think like that yet, Leela. K9? K9------------Master? DOCTOR----I want you to tap the Federation computer system, and find out all you can on Vila Restal, Kerr Avon and Roj Blake. There's a good boy. LEELA-------Can't we go back in time to before the Liberator was destroyed? DOCTOR----We will if K9 can find no record of them.

Part 2
TARRANT---Slave, damage report. SLAVE-------Forward drive out, and slight damage to life support. VILA---------Oh, marvellous (!) TARRANT---Can we get back to base in one piece? SLAVE-------Negative, sir. All necessary repairs must be carried out here. I'm sorry. VILA---------So, you should be! Why didn't you warn us earlier? SLAVE-------I was afraid to interrupt you, sir. VILA---------It's never stopped you before! TARRANT---What about the teleport? Can we get Avon back up? SLAVE-------Teleport is only operational over a three mile radius, I'm afraid, sir. TARRANT---(sighs) Never mind, Slave. Well, we'd better get on with it then.
----------------------------
LEELA-------So, Vila and pruneface are alive. DOCTOR----It looks like it. LEELA-------And, Blake? DOCTOR----"Not known", it says. But, I'm sure he is. Now, all we have to do is find this freighter of theirs. Any ideas, K9? K9------------Negative, master. DOCTOR----Oh, well. Right, old girl, it's up to you. Give it your best shot.
--------------------------
VILA---------It's no good I tell you. We'll never fix this old crate. TARRANT---Shut up and work, Vila. VILA---------What's that? TARRANT---What's what? VILA---------Don't you hear it? SOOLIN-----I do. DAYNA------So, do I.
The Tardis materialised just outside the teleport area. Soolin drew her gun as the door opened.
VILA---------It's all right, Soolin, you can put that away. Doctor. Leela! Oh, Leela.... DOCTOR----Hello, Vila. Tarrant? I thought that woman killed you. TARRANT---She did. VILA---------But another one of you stupidly brought him back. DOCTOR----Seen many of me, Vila? VILA---------A few. DAYNA------As well as pink asteroids. DOCTOR----Well, whichever one of me it was, I had no right changing history. VILA---------I forgive you, Doctor. DOCTOR----Thank you. LEELA-------Where is pruneface? VILA---------On the planet. LEELA-------What is he doing there? VILA---------Getting himself killed with any luck. LEELA-------You do not mean that, Vila. VILA---------Oh, I do. I'm glad you're back, Leela. Avon's been a right miserable so-and-so since you went before. LEELA-------I do not understand. VILA---------He's changed, Leela, and not for the better either, more's the pity. So much has happened and he's capable of anything these days. DOCTOR----What happened to the Liberator? VILA---------Blew up. That was Avon's fault too. DOCTOR----Oh? VILA---------Because of this daft idea he had of finding Blake - we didn't, by the way, it was all a trick of Servalan's, we flew through some red stuff which ate away at everything. Servalan got what she wanted- DOCTOR----The Liberator? VILA---------That's right, only as soon as it moved - boom! DOCTOR----So, she was killed. VILA---------We wish! More lives that a cat that one. That's where Avon's gone. LEELA-------To see her? TARRANT---To kill her once and for all. VILA---------But I'm sure you'd lay down your life to protect her, wouldn't you, Tarrant? TARRANT---Not necessarily. VILA---------I bet (!) So, now we're stuck again. Can't get home because of the damage. DOCTOR----Didn't you use the force wall? VILA---------What, force wall? This old crate is lucky to have anything. SLAVE-------Er, excuse me for interrupting, sir. VILA---------What now, Slave? Run out of oxygen, have we (?) SOOLIN-----Or run out of booze. SLAVE-------I regret to inform you that Federation ships are on the attack again. VILA---------What?! I don't think I can take much more. TARRANT---If they hit us a few more times, I assure you, Vila, you won't have to. DOCTOR----What if I try to adapt the Tardis' force field so it surrounds Scorpio? TARRANT---Can it be done? DOCTOR----I hope so. VILA---------What are you waiting for, Doctor? DOCTOR----I'll be as quick as I can (leaves). VILA---------Let's hope that won't be too late. SLAVE-------Six plasma bolts launched. DAYNA------What?! SOOLIN-----We'll never survive the impact. VILA---------Typical of Avon. DAYNA------What is? VILA---------Him not being here. It would be comforting to know he'd die with us. Why is he never around when you want him? SOOLIN-----But you never want him around. VILA---------Not normally, no. LEELA-------Do not be afraid, Vila. DAYNA------He's always afraid. TARRANT---Quiet all of you! VILA---------Who put you in charge? TARRANT---Haven't you noticed anything? VILA---------Like what? TARRANT---Well, I didn't expect you to. Slave, put the Federation ships on the screen. SLAVE-------I regret to inform you, I can't. VILA---------Why not? DOCTOR----Because they've all been destroyed. LEELA-------How? DOCTOR----Their plasma bolts bounced off the force field and returned to where they came from. VILA---------We never felt anything. DAYNA------Do you ever? VILA---------Hey, that's Avon you're talking about, Dayna. What I meant, Doc, was that even in the Liberator, we felt the impact, even when the force wall was up. DAYNA------That's right. TARRANT---I don't understand. VILA---------That doesn't surprise me. TARRANT---Do you? VILA---------No. DOCTOR----That's because my Tardis is far superior to any craft, including the Liberator. VILA---------Wow! Hey, maybe we should get one. Course, we'd probably have to steal it like everything else. DOCTOR----That's what I did. VILA---------Really? DOCTOR----Well, borrowed without asking really. VILA---------You know, Doc, I like you better every day. Where do we get one? DOCTOR----I'm afraid you can't, unless you have Gallifreyan blood. TARRANT---What, blood? DOCTOR----My people. To operate a Tardis, you have to be one hundred percent Gallifreyan. DAYNA------Not mixed? DOCTOR----Certainly not! It won't work properly, otherwise. LEELA-------It doesn't now. DOCTOR----Thank you, Leela. TARRANT---Then the man who brought me back to life, couldn't have been you. DOCTOR----I shouldn't think so. Why? What did he say? VILA---------That he was you and was half-human. He knew us. DOCTOR----Well, I assure you, I am not half-human. Unless..... DAYNA------Unless? DOCTOR----Well, I've often spent a lot of time on Earth over the centuries, so perhaps if he is me, he considers himself to be half-human. Either that or the blood has altered in some way. But I'm sure that's impossible. I'll have to find out when I take you back, Leela. What's he like? VILA---------Horrible. All touchy-feely. DOCTOR----Very odd. DAYNA------I didn't think so. SOOLIN-----Neither did I. VILA---------Well, you wouldn't, since you were the ones he was touchy-feely with. DOCTOR----I'd be very worried if I - presuming it is me, of course - had been like that with you or Tarrant. VILA---------And I'd be very worried if you'd been like that with Avon! DOCTOR----So, would I. Right then, since we're safe from all possible attacks now, why don't we get on with the necessary repairs? TARRANT---Good idea. VILA---------If only Avon knew the trouble he'd caused. TARRANT---No doubt you'll tell him when he comes back. VILA---------Me? You seem to think you're in charge, why don't you do it? TARRANT---Right, I will. VILA---------You know, I'm sure he enjoys us trying to lose our ships. We'll lose this one too one day, you mark my words. DAYNA------I'd rather mark your face, Vila. LEELA-------Leave him alone or I will cut out your tongue and cut off your hands. DAYNA------You what?! DOCTOR----She'd do it, Dayna. DAYNA------Is she some sort of psycho? VILA---------Like Avon. DOCTOR----No, she's not. Just try not to annoy her, okay? DAYNA------Whatever you say. TARRANT---What shall we do first? DOCTOR----How about the teleport? It's important, isn't it? TARRANT---Yes. We might have to bring Avon back in a hurry. VILA---------Can't you do it last, then? DOCTOR----Afraid not, Vila. Sorry. If it was my ship, I probably would.

Part 3
Meanwhile on the panet Fortekor 5, Avon had been captured and was tied to a table and connected to wires. He was not very happy and wished he could call for teleport, but his bracelet had been removed.
AVON-------I should have tried sooner. Perhaps it might be better to have has someone with me, after all. Still, they're bound to get worried, if they're not already. Vila. On second thoughts, after the shuttle and Egrorian's trick, he probably wouldn't care if I live or die. Someone is bound to come. They must! SERVALAN---Oh, I doubt that very much, Avon. AVON-------You're lying. SERVALAN---No, I'm not. They were hit by a couple of plasma bolts. AVON-------Not enough to destroy the Scorpio. SERVALAN---Perhaps not, but enough damage was caused to disable it before the final attack. So, that leaves you alive, and with no one to talk to apart from yourself. I always knew you were mad, Avon, but now I'm sure of it. AVON-------What do you want, Servalan? SERVALAN---What makes you think I want anything? AVON-------Because you wouldn't have gone to all the trouble of trussing me up like a turkey if you didn't. SERVALAN---What an interesting thought. I must put it into practice. I've always wanted to stuff you, Avon. AVON-------Well, that makes a change from the stuffing you usually want. SERVALAN---And, what do you mean by that? AVON-------Ask Tarrant. SERVALAN---But he's dead, remember? AVON-------Oh, yes. I forgot. SERVALAN---How could you forget a thing like that? AVON-------He wasn't particularly memorable. SERVALAN---Unlike me. AVON-------Oh, yes. I always remember the disgusting things in my life. SERVALAN---Come to think of it, Avon, Tarrant wasn't particularly memorable to me either. AVON-------I'll tell him, when I see him. SERVALAN---In hell, naturally. AVON-------And there was I thinking I was already in it along with you. SERVALAN---I may go to many places, Avon, but hell's not one of them. AVON-------You'll be there before me. SERVALAN---Not if I can help it. AVON-------So, I say again, what do you want, Servalan? SERVALAN---You. Well, your body at any rate. AVON-------To do what? SERVALAN---To take you to places you've only dreamed of. AVON-------You want to take me? SERVALAN---Yes. AVON-------Well, as you have me at a disadvantage, I'm hardly in a position to refuse. SERVALAN---I knew you'd see it like that. GUARD------Commissioner Sleer? SERVALAN---What is it? GUARD------I have a message for you. SERVALAN---Excuse me a moment, Avon. I shan't be long (leaves). AVON-------Take as long as you like. I'm not going anywhere. SERVALAN---That is impossible! Are you sure there's no mistake? GUARD------None commissioner. SERVALAN---But how? GUARD------We don't know. SERVALAN---Then find out! Go on! AVON-------Problems, Servalan? SERVALAN---Nothing that can't be dealt with. AVON-------Aren't you going to tell me? SERVALAN---Well, you're bound to find out sooner or later. It seems Scorpio wasn't destroyed after all, despite six plasma bolts aimed directly at it. AVON-------How is that possible? SERVALAN---I was hoping you'd tell me. AVON-------I have no idea. Scorpio has no protection. SERVALAN---Could it have been Orac? AVON-------Oh, I very much doubt that. SERVALAN---Well, something caused the destruction of my pursuit ships. Something on Scorpio. AVON-------I'm afraid I can't help you, Servalan. And even if I could, I wouldn't. SERVALAN---Oh, but you will, Avon. You will board the ship, destroy whatever it is and then kill Tarrant and the others. AVON-------(thinks and smiles) What a wonderful idea. But I won't do it, however much I'd enjoy seeing Tarrant die. SERVALAN---Oh, but you will, Avon. AVON-------Over my dead body. SERVALAN---That won't be a problem. Goodbye, Avon. For the moment AVON-------What are you planning in that warped brain of yours now, Servalan? SERVALAN---A new plan and one which I know will succeed, with or without you co-operation, Avon (leaves). AVON-------Servalan! SERVALAN! Damn!
------------------------------
DOCTOR----What's the matter, Tarrant? VILA---------Besides his ego? TARRANT---Shut up, Vila! LEELA-------Leave him alone or I will- TARRANT---All right, Leela. DOCTOR----Well? TARRANT---The teleport is more Avon's field than mine. I don't know the first thing about it. VILA---------And there was me thinking you were as bigheaded as him. DOCTOR----Please, Vila. VILA---------Okay, Doc. DOCTOR----Well, why don't you concentrate on something else and leave this to me? TARRANT---You understand it? DOCTOR----I understand practically everything. I'll have this fixed in less than ten minutes. TARRANT---A tall order, Doctor. DOCTOR----You don't believe me? TARRANT---Well, it would take Avon longer than that. VILA---------And he's supposed to be a genius. DOCTOR----If he is, I'm a better one. SOOLIN-----And obviously modest with it (!) DOCTOR----Five minutes then. Now, stop bothering me and let me get to work. TARRANT---Whatever you say, Doctor. VILA---------Can he really do it, Leela, so fast? LEELA-------Of course. He is very clever. What is wrong, Vila? VILA---------Oh, nothing, apart from the fact Avon will be back sooner than I'd hoped. LEELA-------Do you think he will remember me? VILA---------How could he forget you? He was very upset when he heard you'd got married, which, for someone with no heart, is quite unusual. LEELA-------He has no heart? VILA---------Not literally.. I mean, he doesn't care about anyone except himself. Oh, I don't know though. He might not have one. It would explain a lot. So, are you happy? LEELA-------Happy? VILA---------With this man you married. LEELA-------Sometimes. But sometimes, I wish I'd never met Andred and still travelled with the Doctor. VILA---------Andred? Oh, your husband. LEELA-------Yes. He is one of the Doctor's people. VILA---------I see. LEELA-------Do you? VILA---------Not really. LEELA-------That is why I am here. I asked the Doctor to visit me. I needed to talk to a friend. And I asked if he could take me to visit you. VILA---------Just me? LEELA-------Yes. VILA---------Not Avon or Blake? LEELA-------No. I liked you best, Vila, and I wanted to find out how you were. I was upset when I found out about the Liberator. VILA---------Not as much as we were. Well, Avon didn't particularly care and it was all his fault. LEELA-------You have said. VILA---------Well, I'm glad you've come. It's nice to talk to someone who doesn't insult me all the time. Why don't you stay for good? LEELA-------I don't know. VILA---------It'd be fun. LEELA-------I will think about it. DOCTOR----Voilá! VILA---------You've fixed it? DOCTOR----Why don't you ask Orac? VILA---------Avon's hidden the key. Slave, is the teleport fixed? SLAVE-------Teleport is now fully operational, thanks to the skill of the strange man, sir. DOCTOR----I'm not all that strange. DAYNA------That is a matter of opinion. DOCTOR----Could you have done any better? DAYNA------No. DOCTOR----No, so kindly keep your opinions to yourself. VILA---------That's told you. DOCTOR----All in two minutes and seventeen seconds. How's Tarrant doing? VILA---------Badly, I should imagine. SOOLIN-----Well, at least he's trying, Vila. VILA---------I won't even think of answering that. DAYNA------Tarrant? Tarrant? TARRANT---<What is it?> DAYNA------The Doctor's mended the teleport. How are you doing? TARRANT---<Not very well.> VILA---------Told you. DOCTOR----Where is he? DAYNA------Where are you? TARRANT---<Forward hold.> DOCTOR----Tell him I'm coming to give him a hand (leaves). DAYNA------The Doctor says- TARRANT---<I heard. I might as well come back now since he's bound to take over.>
------------------------------
SERVALAN---You understand what I want you to do? AVON-------Yes. I'm to kill everyone on Scorpio. SERVALAN---As soon as you return to your base and not before. I don't want any of them to become suspicious. AVON-------I'll do it at the base. SERVALAN---Good. Now, here's the teleport bracelet. Go out onto the surface and get them to take you up. Off you go.
-----------------------------
AVON-------<Scorpio, I'm ready for teleport.> SOOLIN-----About time! VILA---------So, he didn't get his head blown off after all. Never mind, there's always next time with any luck. There's no justice. What am I saying? If there was any, Avon would never have been born in the first place. AVON-------And neither would you. VILA---------So you're back. AVON-------Obviously. I can see you're just thrilled about it. How's the ship? VILA---------Better without your presence. AVON-------Repairs needed? DAYNA------How did you know? AVON-------I overheard Servalan talking. Why wasn't it destroyed? TARRANT---The Doctor used his Tardis thing to put a force field around it. AVON-------The Doctor? Tardis? Have you been drinking Vila's wine? TARRANT---No, I haven't! VILA---------I wouldn't let him anyway, even if you paid me a hundred million credits for a glass. DAYNA------You wouldn't? VILA---------Well.... You remember the Doctor, don't you, Avon? Not forgetting his magic box. AVON-------Of course I do. And who is this? VILA---------Leela. Surely, you haven't forgotton her. AVON-------Leela? No, of course I haven't. DOCTOR----All done. Hello Avon. AVON-------Hello. DOCTOR----Is that all you have to say? AVON-------It seems so. TARRANT---Can we make it back to base? DOCTOR----What do you think? AVON-------Let's go then. We must get back as soon as possible. SOOLIN-----Why? AVON-------There's something I have to do. TARRANT---Well, thank you for your help, Doctor. DOCTOR----I should think so. TARRANT---I'm sure you must be very busy. DOCTOR----Quite. Then, I suppose we should be going then. AVON-------Yes. LEELA-------Doctor? DOCTOR----Yes? LEELA-------(goes over and whispers) I think we should stay with them. DOCTOR----Why? LEELA-------I sense something is not right. DOCTOR----Like what? LEELA-------It is Avon. I do not think he can be trusted. DOCTOR----Why? LEELA-------I am not sure. DOCTOR----All right, Leela. Erm, Tarrant? TARRANT---Yes? DOCTOR----I don't think we'll leave just yet. TARRANT---Why not? AVON-------Yes, why not? DOCTOR----There might be more Federation ships out there waiting for you so you'll need the protection of the force field. VILA---------That's right. AVON-------There aren't. DOCTOR----How do you know? AVON-------I..... Stay then, but as soon as we get to base, you leave. DOCTOR----We'll see. TARRANT---Slave, set a course for Xenon base. SLAVE-------Confirmed, sir. DOCTOR----(quietly) I see what you mean about Avon. LEELA-------He did not know who I was. DOCTOR----After all the trouble you gave him? Mind you, he didn't seem to know me either. LEELA-------Vila did. DOCTOR----Yes. And he seems very keen to get to their base. LEELA-------Vila? DOCTOR----Avon! AVON-------Yes? DOCTOR----Nothing. He's being very mysterious. Too mysterious. I think you're right, Leela, and he can't be trusted. When we arrive, I suggest you and I keep an eye on him. LEELA-------I agree. DOCTOR----Thought you would.

Part 4
A couple of hours later they arrived. Everyone had been chatty except Avon who hadn't moved a muscle since he sat down, not even his head. Only the Doctor and Leela had any suspicions and Vila was too drunk to care, although he had shared his wine with the Doctor and Leela voluntarily. They made their way from the ship to the base, Leela and the Doctor holding Vila up while Avon followed last. The door closed, and when everyone was out of sight and earshot, he pulled a gun from his boot and smashed the controls with the butt, then joined the others.
SOOLIN-----What are we going to do with him? TARRANT---I'll put him to bed in the hope he sobers up. DOCTOR----What do you think he dreams of? DAYNA------Booze, booze and more booze. VILA---------That's not true. I dream of you and Soolin. SOOLIN-----Do you really? VILA---------Well, I would if you didn't have guns to my head and order me to stop. TARRANT---I'll take the bottle, Vila. VILA---------Why? TARRANT---You don't want to spill any on yourself, do you? DAYNA------No, he doesn't, otherwise he'll have wet dreams. VILA---------Very funny (!) DAYNA------If only you were. TARRANT---Come on, Vila, bedtime. VILA---------Can't Leela put me to bed? She can join me if she likes. SOOLIN-----Does she look that desperate? VILA---------You can do it, then. SOOLIN-----Do I look that desperate? VILA---------Yes. It's about time someone defrosted the ice maiden. SOOLIN-----Well, it ceratinly won't be you. VILA---------Your loss. DAYNA------Your lucky escape. SOOLIN-----True.
Tarrant led Vila out trying to keep him upright, while the Doctor went across to Leela.
DOCTOR----Avon's definately up to something. LEELA-------I agree, but how can we find out what it is? DOCTOR----We'll just have to wait. LEELA-------For how long? DOCTOR----As long as it takes. AVON-------I think I shall go to bed too. It has been a long day. DOCTOR----But, I don't think we'll have to wait too long. AVON-------Goodnight. DAYNA------'Night, Avon. SOOLIN-----Goodnight. DOCTOR----Follow him, Leela, but not too closely. LEELA-------I do know how to track someone, Doctor. DOCTOR----Of course you do. And be careful. Erm, excuse me, ladies. DAYNA------Yes? DOCTOR----Leela was wondering if there was anywhere she could freshen up. DAYNA------Of course. I'll show you. DOCTOR----You can just tell her. I'm sure she'll find it, won't you, Leela? LEELA-------Yes. DOCTOR----Besides, I'd like to ask you ladies some questions. SOOLIN-----About what? DOCTOR----Avon.
------------------------------
TARRANT---Shut up, Vila, and go to sleep. How can anyone so little, weigh so much? VILA---------Seventy eight kilos, Orac says. Little enough to save Avon's neck, or so he'd have liked. AVON-------I would still like. Stand still, Tarrant, or I'll blow your head off sooner than you'd like.
------------------------------
DOCTOR----And you haven't noticed anything odd in his behaviour since he teleported? DAYNA------He's always like that. Why? DOCTOR----Leela and I have known Avon a while and he doesn't quite seem himself. SOOLIN-----So? DOCTOR----So, how could he not know who Leela is when he's in love with her, hmm? You tell me that. DAYNA------She's married now, isn't she? DOCTOR----Yes. SOOLIN-----Perhaps that's why. He just put her out of his mind because it hurt too much when he found out. DOCTOR----I don't think so. Not from what Vila's been telling us anyway. SOOLIN-----You shouldn't take too much notice of him, Doctor. He talks rubbish quite often. DOCTOR----Drunks are the only people you can rely on for honest words, Soolin. SOOLIN-----Then, maybe he doesn't love her any more. DAYNA------No. For once, I agree with the Doctor. Avon never forgets a lost love. There was Anna Grant for years. SOOLIN-----Anna Grant? DAYNA------I'll tell you about that bitch some other time. So, what do you think, Doctor? DOCTOR----I'm not quite sure. I have some equipment in the Tardis which will tell me either way. DAYNA------Let's go and get it, then. DOCTOR----You're coming too? DAYNA------Of course! DOCTOR----Right, lead the way.
--------------------------------
TARRANT---You aren't serious, Avon. AVON-------Never more so. TARRANT---And, what will you do when you've killed me? AVON-------Kill the rest of you of course. What did you think I'd do, cry? VILA---------Oh, of course (!) Stupid of you not to guess that, Tarrant. AVON-------But then, Vila, he never was very bright, any more than you are.
-------------------------------
DAYNA------It's completely smashed! DOCTOR----So, I see. But it can be repaired. DAYNA------Who do you think did it? DOCTOR----I'll give you three guesses. DAYNA-----But why? DOCTOR----So none of us can run away?
------------------------------
AVON-------So, which one of you wants to go first? VILA---------Go? You mean, leave the room? AVON-------Leave your body bleeding all over the floor. VILA---------Tarrant can. TARRANT---Now, wait a minute- VILA---------You always claim to be in charge and they always die first. It's your duty. TARRANT---Vila- VILA---------I can't believe it's happening again to me. What's the word? Deja vu, that's it. It's bloody deja vu! And there was I thinking he'd got over his murderous intentions. I told you you couldn't trust him, didn't I? TARRANT---Yes, you did, Vila, and I hate to admit you were right. VILA---------It's nice to know you think I've got something right, before I die. That makes it all worthwhile somehow (!)
Suddenly, Leela appeared from nowhere and jumped on Avon's back. The gun went off, shooting Tarrant in the leg.
LEELA-------DOCTOR!
Vila grabbed a sheet and huddled in the corner underneath it. Avon managed to get Leela off, grabbed her arm and threw her to the floor. As his hand tightened around her throat, she pulled a janis thorn out and stuck it in his neck but it had no effect. She tried to fight him off but he was too strong. She could feel the life draining from her when suddenly his grip loosened and he collapsed on the floor just as the Doctor and Dayna skidded to a halt outside the door. She looked up to see Vila gripping the gun tightly. He looked at it, at Avon and at the gun again, then dropped it as though it burnt.
LEELA-------What kept you? DOCTOR----Got lost. Sorry. Are you all right? LEELA-------I am now. Thank you, Vila. VILA---------That's all right. I quite enjoyed it really. LEELA-------Watching Avon trying to kill me? VILA---------No. Smashing Avon's head in. I've wanted to do that for years. Even more so since Egrorian's shuttle. Is he dead?
The Doctor examined Avon carefully then looked Vila straight in the eye.
DOCTOR----No, Vila, you haven't killed him. After all, how can you kill an android. VILA---------An android? DOCTOR----I'm afraid so. VILA---------So, it's not Avon? DOCTOR----No. VILA---------Pity. Oh, well, as long as it's not him, then I'll have another chance. Perhaps, I'll use Orac next time. That'd be fun. DAYNA------Save your fantasies for later, Vila. Where's Tarrant? TARRANT---I'm here. Nice to know you haven't forgotton about me. DAYNA------As if. VILA---------I wish. TARRANT---So, why would an android want to kill us? DAYNA------And an android of Avon? TARRANT---And who made it? VILA---------Uh-oh. TARRANT---What? VILA---------Deja vu, again. DAYNA------What are you going on about, Vila? SOOLIN-----Yes, I'd like to know that too. DAYNA------Nice of you to join us and so promptly (!) SOOLIN-----I'm here now. Well, Vila? VILA---------Not really. I feel sick. DOCTOR----It's okay, Vila. Now, tell us about this deja vu, of yours. VILA---------Okay, Doc. Years ago - before you three morons came along - we went to meet a freedom fighter called Avalon. We rescued her from a Federation base, only it wasn't Avalon but an android Servalan had made to kill us. TARRANT---I see what you mean about your deja vu, Vila. That means Avon's probably still on Fortekor 5. VILA---------Oh, marvellous (!) DAYNA------If he's still alive. VILA---------You mean, Servalan could've killed him now she has the robot? DAYNA------Yes. VILA---------Oh, marvellous! DAYNA------I thought you'd be upset (!) VILA---------Oh, I am, I am. A life without Avon has got to be the most.... wonderful news I've ever had! Time for a celebration, don't you think? DOCTOR----Not until we know for sure, Vila. SOOLIN-----Not that he needs an excuse. TARRANT---So what now, Doctor? DOCTOR----We return to Fortekor 5 and find out. TARRANT---I hope you can pilot Scorpio, Doctor because I'm in no fit state to. DOCTOR----No. That shot completely smashed your leg so you'll have to stay here. DAYNA------So, will you fly Scorpio, Doctor? DOCTOR----No. SOOLIN-----No?! And why not? DOCTOR----Because it'd be much quicker and safer if we all use the Tardis. Agreed? VILA---------Shall I stay here and look after Tarrant? DOCTOR----Erm, all right, Vila. VILA---------Cheers, Doc. I always knew you were a pal. You're the only one who understands me. TARRANT---We all understand you, Vila. SOOLIN-----Just never give in to your wishes. DOCTOR----Leela, are you okay to give the others a hand with Tarrant? LEELA-------I am fine now, Doctor. DOCTOR----Good girl. Right, while you're doing that, I'll fix the door, disconnect the force field and meet you at the Tardis.
To be continued...

Part 5
Meanwhile, back on Fortekor 5.
AVON-------Why haven't you killed me, Servalan? SERVALAN---I'm keeping my options open. AVON-------For, what? SERVALAN---My contingency plan. What's the matter, Avon, aren't you enjoying it? AVON-------Is this how you got Tarrant to.... help you? SERVALAN---Oh no, Avon. He made the first move. AVON-------Well, I was never that desperate. SERVALAN---You will be, Avon, just give it time. AVON-------Get off me, woman. You're making my head throb.
--------------------------
DOCTOR----Ready? DAYNA------Yes. VILA---------Tarrant should be cooked in three hours. SOOLIN-----And back to normal. VILA---------More's the pity. Shame I can't join you. DAYNA------I'm sure we'll be able to fit you in somewhere, Vila. VILA---------Have a good time. I know I will. Fancy staying, Leela? Keep me company? LEELA-------I will help to find pruneface. VILA---------Oh, well, never mind. DAYNA------Oh dear, Vila. Looks like you'll have to have a good time on your own. VILA---------I usually do. SOOLIN-----I bet you do (!) DOCTOR----Right, in you all go. See you later, Vila. VILA---------Take care, Doc, and look after Leela. DOCTOR----She's quite capable of looking after herself. VILA---------I'm sure she is.
Vila watched the Tardis dematerialise and stood there for a while.
VILA---------I wonder if Avon is dead? Be good if he was then all I need is to be rid of the rest. I suppose I'd better go and check on Tarrant. Perhaps I'll just have a quick drink first. Killing homicidal Avon's is thirsty work. Shame it was only an android.
----------------------------
DOCTOR----I could've done with you before, K9. Where did you get to? K9------------I was familiarising myself with the Tardis, master. DOCTOR----Oh. Ah, we seem to have arrived on Fortekor 5. SOOLIN-----Right, then let's find Avon and get the heck out of here. DOCTOR----I agree. What do you suggest? SOOLIN-----You're putting me in charge? DOCTOR----Yes. Any objection? SOOLIN-----No. But, why? DOCTOR----Because you remind me of another forthright blonde lady I know who I must remember to collect from the Eye of Orion when this is all over. SOOLIN-----I suggest we split up. It'll be quicker to find him. DOCTOR----Right. Well, off you go then. DAYNA------What will you be doing? DOCTOR----I'll be waiting. DAYNA------For what? DOCTOR----For you. As soon as I see one of you coming with Avon, I'll open the doors so you'll be safe from Servalan and the guards. SOOLIN-----And how will we know who's rescued him? DOCTOR----I'll let you know via the teleport bracelet. Good job I picked some up, isn't it? SOOLIN-----Damn! I never thought of getting one. DAYNA------Neither did I. DOCTOR----Never mind. No one's perfect. Leela, put that on. LEELA-------How? DAYNA------Let me. SOOLIN-----And, what about you? DOCTOR----I've got mine here. Ready, Leela? LEELA-------Yes. DOCTOR----Ladies? Good luck.
They left the Tardis and separated.
Meanwhile....
SERVALAN---I'm afraid I must leave you for the moment, Avon. AVON-------What a pity (!) SERVALAN---But I will be back shortly. AVON-------I await with breathless anticipation (!) SERVALAN---When I get back, Avon, I assure you, you'll not only be breathless, but also speechless if my plan is working. Why don't you make yourself comfortable? AVON-------Ha, ha (!)
Servalan left and Avon struggled against his bonds.
LEELA-------Avon? AVON-------Who's that? Leela? Is it really you? LEELA-------Yes. AVON-------What are you doing here? LEELA-------I have come to rescue you. AVON-------You care. LEELA-------I would rather have you, than the mechanical man Servalan sent to kill us.
Leela untied him and disconnected the wires.
AVON-------Mechanical man? So, that's what she's up to. That bruising on your neck? LEELA-------The mechanical man was winning. Come, let's return to the Tardis.
A few hundred yards away, Dayna saw Servalan talking to some guards. Her communicator beeped.
DAYNA------Yes? DOCTOR----<This is the Doctor. Leela's found Avon so come back quickly so we can get out of here.> DAYNA------Gladly. What about Soolin? DOCTOR----<She's already on her way.> DAYNA------Right. I'll be with you shortly. Prepare for the fastest getaway in history. DOCTOR----<The door will be open for you.>
She aimed her gun at Servalan and fired. She cursed herself for hitting her shoulder, instead of her head and ran to the Tardis as fast as she could.
--------------------------
DOCTOR----What's that? SOOLIN-----Something's alerted security. DOCTOR----But, what? DAYNA------Me! Quickly, Doctor! DOCTOR----What did you do? DAYNA------Not much.
The Doctor punched in the code for Xenon base and they dematerialised.
DOCTOR----What did you do, Dayna? DAYNA------Shot Servalan. SOOLIN------Is she dead? DAYNA------No. I missed her head. DOCTOR----That was stupid, Dayna. DAYNA------I know. I'll do better next time. DOCTOR----I meant, shooting her when we were supposed to go there, rescue Avon and leave without anyone knowing we were there. DAYNA------She deserves to die. DOCTOR----That's as maybe, but so do a lot of people. You had no right risking our safety for that. DAYNA------I'm sorry. I just saw her and couldn't help myself. DOCTOR----How hard did you try? SOOLIN-----Where's Avon? DOCTOR----Leela is looking after him. DAYNA------Are you sure that's wise if what Vila says is true? DOCTOR----Do you think I'd let her if I didn't think so?
------------------------------
LEELA-------How are you feeling now, Avon? AVON-------Fine. I'm a little surprised you haven't called me, pruneface. LEELA-------Oh, I have. AVON-------Oh. LEELA-------But that was before I knew you were in danger. AVON-------And if I hadn't been? No answer. Leela, what are you doing here? Are you married? LEELA-------Yes. AVON-------But you're with the Doctor. LEELA-------I left him some years ago to marry. But I wanted to see Vila again. AVON-------Just Vila? LEELA-------(pause) Yes. AVON-------You had to think about it. LEELA-------No, I did not. AVON-------Yes, you did. Leela, I- LEELA-------We are back at your base. We must go. AVON-------Leela, I must talk to you. LEELA-------But, we are talking, Avon. AVON-------You know what I mean. LEELA-------I will help you to your room where we will be able to talk alone. AVON-------Thank you.
---------------------------
VILA---------You and your potshots, Dayna. You should've left it to Soolin since she's the expert. SOOLIN-----I certainly wouldn't have missed a head that size. VILA---------One of these days your slow reflexes are going to get yourself killed. And us along with you, probably. DAYNA------At least I tried. VILA---------Where's Leela? DOCTOR----With Avon. She has a few things to sort out.
---------------------------
AVON-------What's your husband called? LEELA-------Andred. AVON-------What's he like? LEELA-------Not like you. He is a bit like Vila. AVON-------An idiot? LEELA-------Yes. He is very stupid and does not make me laugh like Vila does. AVON-------Do you love him? LEELA-------Yes. AVON-------Do you? LEELA-------I do not know any more. I must go and leave you to rest. AVON-------Please don't go. LEELA-------I must. AVON-------Why? LEELA-------You need rest. You have suffered a great deal. AVON-------What are you afraid of? LEELA-------I am afraid of nothing. AVON-------Yes, you are. You're running away. LEELA-------I am not. Goodbye Avon. AVON-------Wait!
He got off the bed and grabbed her arm. He gently stroked her face.
LEELA-------I must go. AVON-------You are so beautiful. LEELA-------Please, Avon. AVON-------You must know how I feel about you. LEELA-------Yes. AVON-------I do not make friends or fall in love easily. LEELA-------If you say so. AVON-------Oh, I do. I have only loved two women. One I believed was dead but wasn't really. I discovered she had betrayed me. The other is you. LEELA-------Let me go, Avon. AVON-------Do you really want to leave? LEELA-------Yes. AVON-------Then, go. I won't stop you. LEELA-------I.... AVON-------You can't, can you? LEELA-------No. I am so confused. AVON-------I love you so much, Leela. LEELA-------Avon, I-
Before she could finish the sentence, Avon kissed her. At first, she resisted and then gave in, as he moved her towards the bed.....
A little later.
LEELA-------I must go now. AVON-------Yes. Leela? LEELA-------Yes, Avon? AVON-------Thank you. LEELA-------For what? AVON-------Finally showing me how much you care. I don't suppose we'll meet again. LEELA-------I do not think we will. AVON-------But if you are passing here, or even the Liberator, don't be a stranger. LEELA-------No. Goodbye Avon. AVON-------Goodbye for now, Leela. Oh, Leela? LEELA-------Yes? AVON-------Call me it, just once more. LEELA-------Goodbye, pruneface.
Leela left and fought back the tears a warrior wasn't supposed to shed. She joined the others while Avon lay there a very happy man. Servalan could throw anything at him now and he didn't care. He needed sleep before the meeting with Zukan and the others in the morning. He smiled.
AVON-------I wonder if any other part of Zukan is pink? Oh, Leela....
------------------------------
DOCTOR----Time to go? LEELA-------How did you know? DOCTOR----Just a hunch. Back to Andred? LEELA-------Yes. Back to my husband and the man I love. DOCTOR----Good girl.
So, they said their goodbyes. The Doctor dropped Leela and K9 off on Gallifrey, then went to collect Romana.
The End
