Friday's episode ended with an ambulance speeding away from the Street
SUNDAY 7th DECEMBER 2003
In the Kabin, Reet was observing Fiz. She seemed to have stood reading every magazine in the shop with no sign of buying anything. Being Sunday Reet wanted to shut shop at 4pm so she finally said "are you going to buy anything this week Fiz luv." However before Fiz could respond Norris came skipping happily into the shop. He was just like an eager child.
"Just found out who was in that ambulance." "Who" both women exclaimed "Tracy Barlow" said Norris pleased with himself for this morsel of news. "Gone into premature labour and there's complications - just run into poor Ken. As if that man hasn't gone through enough already...."
Fiz thrust down some money on the counter and said to Rita she would have the following magazine. As she left she turned back and said "you know this will be Karen MacDonald's fault this will! With that Fiz left leaving Norris open mouthed somehow this piece of information had slipped the biggest gossip of Weatherfield's attention. How was Karen MacDonald to blame?
At the MacDonald flat a fierce row could be heard to be going on from the Street :-
"Don't know why you are getting so worked up for Babe." "The Kid could've been anyone's."
"She said it was mine" exclaimed Steve to ex-wife Karen.
"She said it was Roy Cropper's" shrieked Karen "and look how that turned out? Roy and Hayley 'r' barely speaking!"
"Well, we needn't worry as there probably isn't a baby now" said Steve getting very bored of a discussion they had had so many times since the incident on Wednesday evening.
"THAT'S IT INIT! YOU BLAME ME FOR THIS! WELL IT WASN'T MY FAULT SHE WAS JUST GOING ON AND ON ABOUT HOW GOOD YOU WERE IN BED AND EVERYONE KNOWS YOUR MY BABE" Shirked Karen with ever increasing volume.
"The trouble with you Karen is you act before engaging your brain in any thought."
With that Steve rose up and said he was off to The Rovers.
Karen was left alone with a tear trickling down her face - she had screwed up big time. she pitifully said to herself "thumping a pregnant woman in the stomach was never the brightest of ideas Karen."
------------------
It was 5pm, Deirdre just stared out of a Weatherfield General Hospital window. The rain was pelting down and it was fast looking like another dreary, gloomy December night in this grotty, rundown area of greater Manchester.
Ken walked up to her and gently said "here you are I've been looking for you everywhere." "My Tracy, an evil cow she may have been, but she was still my baby." "Oh Ken I failed her, I was a lousy mother, I promised Ray when he left I'd look after her and what did I do I failed her and by doing so probably am responsible for her dying." "Come on love this is not your fault" "You can't be blamed for internal haemoridging." replied Ken. "Oh Ken" weeped Deirdre as she fell into Ken's arms "what are we going to do."
"Well, we could make our way to the special baby care unit, I believe we have a little granddaughter there fighting for her life." "She needs us now." Ken said, "and you must always remember, everything that happened to Tracy she brought upon herself" - which wasn't the words the grieving mother wanted to hear right then, but Deirdre did as she was told and meakly followed Ken towards the elevators.
------------------------------------
A lot of hustle, bustle and gossip was going on in the Rovers that Sunday as all the locals got ready for their usual booze fest on a Sunday night - for that matter a pattern they followed every night. Over at one table was Steve drinking his sorrows away. Over at another were Roy and Hayley shocked at the outcome of events. Then there was Martin and Katy, and at another table Candice and Nick.
Propping up the bar was old friends Mike, Audrey, Norris and Rita discussing Tracy Barlow and Ken and Deirdre's parenting. Mike sick of the discussion and feeling himself to be in-adequate as a father, suddenly declared,
"you know what today I decided to call Mark. Realised it must have been some ten months since I last spoke to him. Anyway he's upsticks and left Germany without telling me. Apparently he's been attached to some bird for two years now according to that Craig mate of his. Well, apparently he's come back to England and married her. Never mind Ken Barlow where the hell did I go wrong. My own son marries and doesn't tell me!"
"So where is he" asked Audrey. "Couldn't find that out" replied Mike. I've tracked his mother down to Dublin, yes Dublin seems to come up like a bad penny in my life as far as my ex's are concerned. Anyway I might just have to contact Maggie sometime if I don't hear from Mark soon."
Elsewhere in the room. Martin and Katy were rowing. "Think about it Martin" whined the ever irksome Katy? "Sheffield would be great for us." Away from the nagging families. "You do love me don't ya Martin? Because if you do you'll come with me? I'm going, I have friends there still and I just hate it around here. Its the only way we're going to ever be in peace to be together if we move away from this dump."
Martin didn't have time to speak which was just as well as he hadn't been listening to Katy prattling on. He'd been saved because at that moment he caught the eye of Todd and Sarah who had just walked in. Martin made a mental note to himself, where on earth was poor Beth tonight? He loved Sarah dearly but she really didn't have any brains and was any parent's nightmare.
Katy looked "oh no, look what the cat dragged in, very *friendly* person Sarah and her puffy boyfriend!" "Do you mind," exclaimed Martin" brought out of his thoughts of leaving Sarah, David, Bethany and Gail - yes Gail - behind getting a small gist of what Katy had been saying.
"That's my daughter you are talking about her." "Well, I 'ope she's not coming over 'ere as we have stuff to discuss" said a defiant Katy.
It was okay, Sarah didn't want to join Katy and her stepfather anymore than Katy wanted her too. Sarah said to Todd, come on lets go I'm really not in the mood for this." However she was too late to escape, Candice had spied her and was calling for her best mate to come over much to Nick's protests. He just couldn't see why his sister was still with the looser Grimshaw. He still felt uneasy whenever "I'm gay, no I'm not," Todd. was about. Of course Candice knew none of this. It was something Nick, Sarah and Todd had kept amongst themselves. Nick couldn't help but feel bitter though. Here was his kid sister, 16 years old living with a drop out. Pregnant aged just twelve and now if Katy Harris was to be believed she was pregnant again with Grimshaw. "Oh Sarah," Nick thought to himself. Where did it all go wrong? She'd gone from one scrape to another in the last five years and was now probably embarking on the biggest mistake of her life by living in the dingy bedsit with looser Todd.
Missing from the pub that night was bustling butcher Fred Elliott. He'd been to London for a weekend Landlord's convention.
---------------------------------------------
Meanwhile back at the hospital Ken and Deirdre made their way to the special baby care unit and hunted out their granddaughter. She was so tiny. They just stood there in silence deep in their thoughts. Would this little girl pull through? What life awaited her if she did?
