I cannot stress enough as you read the following parts, that you may think you have all the answers but you don't. Please don't pass judgement until at least parts 13-14 when the final twist in the tale will be unveiled.

Part VI
Written Friday, 13 May 2005

A couple of days later, Mike had already left, when Penny was coming out of the flat. She had the shock of her life for she had run straight into her former brother-in-law Ray Sykes.

PENNY: Oh my you startled me, what on earth are you doing here?

RAY: I heard off the grapevine that congratulations are in order.

Penny sighed, “Jan!” “Oh don’t blame her.” Ray sneered. “One of her kids told ‘R’ Jimmy”

PENNY: Well you have offered your congratulations, now you can go as I’m running late and Mike’s just inside.

RAY: I don’t think so for you see I saw him leave. And as to you running late, tough luck! What is it about the women in this family and Mike Baldwin?

Penny reached into her purse

PENNY: So what is it you want this time?

RAY: I was actually looking for Linda, however if you are offering…

PENNY: I’m offering you nothing.

RAY: Well, I was looking for Linda because I need some money, ‘R’Ryan has got into a bit of a scrape.

PENNY: Now there’s a surprise….not! How about his own mother helping him out for a change?

RAY: Eve! Don’t make me laugh. She is a worse mother than you and we both know that is saying something. Anyway no idea where Eve is, at least not since running off with her latest fancy man. More chance of finding Linda.

PENNY: And what makes you think I’d know where Linda is?

“Oh come off it Penny, Linda always looked up to her ‘Aunty Penny’”, Ray snarled, before doing a wicked chuckle. Penny bowed her head as Ray continued. “You and I both know whenever Linda did her vanishing acts from the rest of us, you could guarantee she would keep in touch with you. Of course it might be a bit different if she knew the truth about you though?” Ray laughed.

Penny was now feeling very awkward and just wanted Sykes gone.

PENNY: (timidly she asked) Isn’t she in Dublin?

RAY: Tried that address. Not there.

PENNY: I think I’ve got a card from her somewhere but to be truthful she doesn’t keep in touch all that much anymore.

RAY: You are lying.

PENNY: No I’m not, last I heard she was moving to Germany with some fella and I’ll hunt the card out sometime for you. However I know no more than that.

RAY: Don’t bother. As I don’t need to contact her after all?

PENNY: But you said you needed to contact her?

RAY: Only for money, but why bother her when there is more to be had here?

PENNY: What are you talking about?

Penny was getting sick of this and couldn’t help but ask herself what Ray Sykes really wanted. She didn’t have to wait long for Ray was soon to make it quite clear his demands.

RAY: Now Penny, do you think Linda would hero-worship you as much if she knew the truth?

PENNY: You wouldn’t

RAY: Wouldn’t I? How much is it worth?

PENNY: (getting upset) you can’t blackmail me?

RAY: Oh but I think I can. £100,000 tomorrow or not only will I find and tell Linda everything. I might also be tempted to tell Mike Baldwin your true connections to his much hated ex-wife!

As Ray left Penny fell to her knees in tears. This was a total nightmare. Not only had she had two days of grief from Mike asking questions about the baby she had given up years before. But now she had that scumbag Ray Sykes appearing out the blue blackmailing her. Even if she gave him £100,000 now, what was to stop Ray coming back for more?

You were right. It is very like Desperate Housewives. Long buried secrets, long lost family connections - amazing. I'm delighted that I got one of the red herrings, especially after only a couple of parts.

Thanks for being so nice because I was really unsure as I've done nothing like this and I'm now bang in the middle of my Emmerdale story and then I'm retiring from this fanfic lark. The Emmerdale story is nothing like this though it is more character driven I think?

As to the Sykes connection thank Corrie I really do wonder if their will be some signficance further on to who Janice Sykes is? Why name Penny's neighbour Sykes when they know Mike was married to one? I know Sykes is a common name but this is soap.

I really doubt she will be. It'd be too much to ask of soap writers to have little references to future storylines like that, which beady eyed viewers would notice, wouldn't it? It is probably just the Corrie writers going green and recycling!

I thought the green was envy when they read fanfic and after realising how superior it is to the rubbish they're churning out (and more accurate in fact and characterisation) they nick it!
