This is a Corrie/Dr Who crossover I wrote back in 1998 since Ted and Ian Chesterton were played by William Russell:
Part 1
Somewhere in the wet and windy north, there is a borough outside Manchester called Weatherfield. We begin in the lounge of the flat a 10A Coronation Street, home to Mr and Mrs Edward Sullivan, in September 1992. Rita Sullivan walked in and noticed her ill husband staring straight ahead with a huge grin on his face.
Rita: "Ted? Ted?" Ted: "Hmm? Sorry, Rita, love. I was miles away." Rita: "So I saw. Are you all right?" Ted: "Fine. I was just thinking." Rita: "About what?" Ted: "Just something that happened in the past. Nearly twenty-nine years ago it was. Seems like only yesterday." Rita: "Some memories are like that. One day you think of something, and suddenly realise it were half a lifetime ago." Ted: "True. I'd really like to see the Doctor again. Just once more." Rita: "Shall I make you an appointment?" Ted: "What? No, of course not. Ha!" Rita: "What? Are you in pain? Shall I get your tablets?" Ted: "I do wish you'd stop mollycoddling me, Rita. I'm perfectly okay. No. I was just remembering all those encounters with the Daleks. I do hope they never perfected their time travel experiments. Meglamaniac little dustbins." Rita: "Ted." Ted: "Oh, and the Zarbi and Optera. I wonder how Vortis is now. Wish I could go back and find out. You know, Rita, the Zarbi were giant ants. Bigger than people." Rita: "Ted..." Ted: "Hey, you know that swine Alan Bradley was the spitting image of Marco Polo." Rita: "Ted, what are you talking about?" Ted: "I met him you know." Rita: "Alan?" Ted: "Him too. No, Marco Polo. Nice chap, once you got to know him. Maybe Alan was one of his descendants." Rita: "Ted. You're not making any sense. You're ill-" Ted: "And you think the tumour's making me spout rubbish. Nonsense, Rita. My mind's as sane as yours." Rita: "You're not thinking straight then. You know none of these things have ever happened." Ted: "Oh yes they did, Rita. Me, Dor... Barbara, Susan then Vicki, and the Doctor, travelling through time and space in a battered old police box." Rita: "Do you want me to get you a doctor, love?" Ted: "Ah, now there's a thought. Mind you, he could be anywhere, past, present or future." Rita: "Doctor Collins?" Ted: "THE Doctor. You know how we first met him?" Rita: "How could I?" Ted: "I was a teacher back then. Teaching science at Coal Hill School in London. Barbara and I were concerned about a pupil, Susan Foreman, so one day we decided to follow her. But the junkyard was empty. She was nowhere. Then the Doctor came along. But, because we discovered his precious Tardis, he kidnapped us and off we went, back to 100,000BC. He was a sweet old man once you got to know him. Last time we saw him was about twenty years ago, only he'd completely changed his appearance. His whole body even. He was much taller than before." Rita: "Now, Ted, love. You know no one can change their appearance completely without plastic surgery. And even then, you cannot change your height." Ted: "Humans can't, no. But he wasn't human." Rita: "Please stop this, Ted." Ted: "You don't believe me, do you?" Rita: "How can I?" Ted: "Then I'll prove it to you. I'll prove he exists." Rita: "Ted, what are you going to do?" Ted: "That's my business. I just hope I find him before it's too late."
With that he stormed out, leaving Rita crying.
Three days later, Doris Lethbridge-Stewart was reading The Times in bed. Her husband, retired Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart was busy getting into his gardening gear.
Doris: "Alistair?" Brigadier: "Yes, Doris?" Doris: "There's a rather strange advertisement in here. You'd better read it for yourself." Brigadier: "What's it about?" Doris: "It's a message to someone called, 'Doctor'."
The Brigadier smiled, took the paper and read what it said.
Doris: "Well?" Brigadier: "Well what?" Doris: "Do you think it could be for the Doctor?" Brigadier: "Hmm. Ian Chesterton? Ah, I remember now. He used to travel with the Doctor. So yes, I suppose it is. But which one?" Doris: "Do you think the Doctor will have seen it?" Brigadier: "I haven't a clue. But I doubt it." Doris: "What did you mean, 'which one'?"
The Brigadier smiled.
Brigadier: "You wouldn't understand I'm afraid, Doris. I must contact him" Doris: "Do you know where he is?" Brigadier: "No. But I had a device he gave me for emergencies. I'll use that. Just leave it to me." Doris: "Okay." Brigadier: "Oh, and Doris." Doris: "Yes, Alistair?" Brigadier: "If he does turn up, I think it's best if you didn't see him." Doris: "Why ever not?" Brigadier: "I'll explain later. The Doctor's a bit complicated at the best of times." Doris: "Well, you know him far better than I do." Brigadier: "Right then. Now, where did I put that gadget of his?"
Meanwhile up in Weatherfield
Ted: "I don't think he's coming, Rita." Rita: "Who, love?" Ted: "The Doctor." Rita: "But you didn't ask for one." Ted: "Yes, I did. I told you." Rita: "Not that again." Ted: "He obviously hasn't seen the paper." Rita: "What paper?" Ted: "The Times. I placed an advert three days ago." Rita: "Perhaps it wasn't in it." Ted: "They've taken my money, It HAS to be, Rita." Rita: "Of course it will, Ted." Ted: "I'd really like to see him again. Talk about old times, you know. See how he's getting on. And if he's ever been back to Skaro!" Rita: "There's still time." Ted: "Not for me." Rita: "Oh, Ted." Ted: "I'm tired. I think I'll have a lie down." Rita: "All right, love. See you later." Ted: "Hmm."
Rita cried again, then wiped her eyes and went downstairs to The Kabin.
Mavis: "Are you all right, Rita?" Rita: "Not really. It's Ted." Mavis: "I thought he might be. Has his condition got worse?" Rita: "Yes, but he refuses to believe it. Remember I told you about thinking he was with Doris and planning on buying a boat?" Mavis: "Yes. Has he done it again?" Rita: "Not exactly." Mavis: "Oh?" Rita: "Now he's rambling about travelling through time and space in a police box, with a body-changing alien called the Doctor." Mavis: "He's what?" Rita: "Exactly. And he even said Alan looked like Marco Polo." Mavis: "Oh, Rita. What are you going to do?" Rita: "What can I do? Do we have any Times's left?" Mavis: "Plenty." Rita: "Can you get one for me?" Mavis: "Of course." Rita: "Thanks, Mavis."
Mavis got one and Rita flicked through it.
Mavis: "What are you doing?" Rita: "Trying to prove to him he's not himself. Ah. Oh." Mavis: "What is it?" Rita: "I just don't believe he's done this." Mavis: "Done what?" Rita: "Listen to this: 'Doctor, remember Skaro, Vortis, the stuck fast-return switch? Please contact me at 10A Coronation Street, Weatherfield, and please hurry. Ian Chesterton.' This is too much. He actually believes everything he's said is true." Mavis: "Who is Ian Chesteron?" Rita: "I have no idea. But I intend to find out. Thanks, Mavis."
Back in the country.
Doctor: "Hello, Brigadier. My, you have aged. But then, haven't we all?" Brigadier: "Nice to see you again, Doctor." Doctor: "You remember Leela, of course." Brigadier: "Of course. Nice to see you again, miss." Leela: "Hello. Doctor, why is he so old?" Doctor: "We're in his future, Leela. Aren't we, Brigadier?" Brigadier: "I'm afraid so. It's 1992 now." Doctor: "Is it really? Well, well, well. Now, Brigadier, about this message." Brigadier: "I'm sorry, Doctor. It seemed urgent." Doctor: "I always knew I should've taken it away from you after that business with the Zygons." Brigadier: "Ah, now be fair, Doctor. That was the only time I've used it before now, and you weren't too happy about that at the time." Doctor: "And you were proved right to have used it. I know. All right, Brigadier. What is it this time? More alien invaders, I suppose." Brigadier: "Nothing so monotonous. No, it was this message in today's Times I thought you'd like to see." Doctor: "You got me to come across five galaxies just to see a message?! Really, Brigadier." Brigadier: "It could be important, Doctor." Doctor: "What does it say?" Brigadier: "See for yourself." Doctor: "Ian Chesterton? I haven't heard that name in years." Brigadier: "I take it then it was intended for you, and all the other stuff was some sort of code." Doctor: "You take it right, Brigadier. Only it's not really a code." Brigadier: "Well, I didn't understand it." Doctor: "That's because you've never been to Skaro, Vortis, or in the Tardis when the fast-return switch jammed. I suppose if he'd mentioned the Tardis or the Master, you'd have had no problem understanding." Brigadier: "Well obviously, Doctor, since I have at least heard of them." Doctor: "I wonder what he wants." Brigadier: "Could he be in some sort of trouble?" Doctor: "Perhaps. 'Please hurry'. I wonder what he means by that." Leela: "Are we going to help him, Doctor?" Doctor: "I don't see why not. It will be good to see him again." Brigadier: "And his wife." Doctor: "Oh yes. Barbara. Yes, Leela. I think we'll go. Thank you for letting me know about this, Brigadier. Goodbye." Brigadier: "You're going?" Doctor: "It could be urgent." Brigadier: "You've only just arrived." Doctor: "Well, I daresay I'll drop in again sometime. Come on, Leela." Leela: "Goodbye."
The Doctor and Leela entered the Tardis, and the Brigadier watched it dematerialise. He gave a long sigh and went back inside the house.
Doris: "Who was that man, Alistair?" Brigadier: "It's a long story, Doris." Doris: "It will be a long night then."

Part 2
Meanwhile in Coronation Street, Rita downed several vodkas while Ted slept, her emotions a mixture of anger and helplessness. She loved Ted, but couldn't help wishing at times she'd never agreed to his retirement dinner at the Wiltons. She heard him moving about in the bedroom, quickly put down their wedding photo and sat down. Ted came in and spotted the paper on the coffee table.
Rita: "Hello, Ted, love. Sleep well?" Ted: "Not really." Rita: "Oh dear. Anything the matter?" Ted: "My head hurts." Rita: "Shall I get your pills?" Ted: "If you would, Rita, thanks. Is that today's?" Rita: "What?" Ted: "The paper." Rita: "Yes. As a matter of fact I wanted to talk to you about that." Ted: "Good. Sorry, Rita. What was that?" Rita: "There's no need to look through it." Ted: "Why ever not?" Rita: "Because it's in there." Ted: "Is it really? That is wonderful!" Rita: "Wonderful?! It's not wonderful at all, Ted. Have you any idea what you're doing?" Ted: "Of course I do. I have all my faculties, Rita." Rita: "Do you?" Ted: "What's that supposed to mean?" Rita: "It's not the first time you've spoken rubbish, Ted." Ted: "It's not rubbish!" Rita: "Yes, it is. You know it is." Ted: "You'll see." Rita: "Ted, when will you get it into your head that all this stuff about travelling through space and time with some alien, is all in your imagination." Ted: "It happened, Rita!" Rita: "It didn't. It's impossible." Ted: "You would say that. I was sceptical at first, Rita. The Doctor will tell you that when he gets here." Rita: "But he isn't going to get here, becuase he doesn't exist except in your own mind. Last time was bad enough, but this." Ted: "What last time? Rita? Rita!" Rita: (sighs) "You thought I was Doris, and you were buying a boat. Happy now?" Ted: "Oh, Rita. I'm sorry. I didn't know." Rita: "That's because I didn't tell you." Ted: "I must have hurt you a lot." Rita: "You did. And now you're doing it again." Ted: "No!" Rita: "Yes, Ted!" Ted: "Don't you see, Rita. The Docter can help me. I can be cured." Rita: "But you know you can't, Ted." Ted: "In this time, I agree. But the Doctor is sure to know somewhere in the future where I can be. Then we can be happy for much longer, with no more pain for either of us." Rita: "Stop talking like that!" Ted: "But he could. He owes me several favours, you know. Maybe now's the ideal time to call one in. I don't know why I didn't think of it before. Then I would never have lied to you, and got you to agree to Florida and marriage under false pretences. We could still go, you know." Rita: "What?!" Ted: "Live in Florida when I'm better." Rita: "No! Stop it, Ted. Can't you see what you're doing to me?" Ted: "I'm only trying to be optimistic." Rita: "But you need to be REALISTIC, Ted. Like you have been since you told me." Ted: "The Doctor'll make you understand." Rita: "I give up! And who's Ian Chesterton?" Ted: "Who?" Rita: "It says it in the paper, and gives this address." Ted: "Ah." Rita: "Who is he, Ted?"
Ted opened his mouth to say something but suddenly heard a familiar sound outside. He dashed to the window and a huge smile broke out on his face.
Rita: "What's that awful noise?" Ted: "It's the Doctor! And that 'awful noise', as you put it, is the Tardis. I told you he'd come." Rita: "Ted, please don't start that again." Ted: "But he's here. I must have some pills. Where are they?" Rita: "In the kitchen." Ted: "Thanks. I wonder what he looks like now." Rita: "Ted..."
The buzzer went. Ted struggled with his tablets so Rita helped him.
Ted: "Thanks. I'll answer the door." Rita: "Are you okay?" Ted: "I will be."
While Ted went to the intercom, Rita crossed to the window and couldn't believe her eyes when she saw a battered blue police box parked in the garage forecourt.
Ted: "Come up, Doctor." Rita: "Calm down, Ted." Ted: "I can't help it, Rita. Hello, Doctor. It's so good to see you again." Doctor: "Ian Chesterton. Well, well, well." Rita: "Ian Chesterton?" Ted: "You've changed again, I see." Doctor: "Yes, well, you know what we Time Lords are like." Ted: "Don't I just!" Doctor: "Oh, this is Leela. Leela, this is a very old friend of mine, Ian Chesterton." Leela: "Hello. You are very old, aren't you?" Ted: "Thank you very much(!)" Doctor: "I meant, we have known each other for a very long time." Leela: "Why did you not say that in the first place?" Doctor: "Never mind, Leela." Ted: "Well I'm very pleased to meet you anyway, Leela. Come in please." Doctor: "Hello. And who might you be?" Ted: "This is my wife, Rita." Doctor: "Very pleased to meet you." Rita: "You're... the Doctor?" Doctor: "I'm afraid so. What's the matter? Do I have butter on my chin or something?" Rita: "NO. It's just that from Ted's description, I was expecting someone much older." Doctor: "Well, I am 750 years old." Rita: "Oh." Doctor: "And who's Ted?" Rita: "My husband." Doctor: "I thought Ian said you were married to him." Rita: "I'm sorry?" Leela: "Are you all right?" Rita: "Yes. I just feel a bit light-headed." Ted: "That'll be the shock." Rita: "I suppose it is." Ted: "Of knowing I was telling the truth after all." Rita: "All right, Ted. I get the message." Leela: "Did he send you one too?" Doctor: "Not that sort of message, Leela." Ted: "You should've believed me, Rita." Rita: "How can I, the way things are?" Ted: "I know. Come on, love. Come and sit down." Rita: "Thanks, love." Doctor: "Would you like a glass of water?" Rita: "Yes, please." Doctor: "Okay." (leaves) Rita: "What's going on, Ted?" Ted: "It's a long story." Doctor: "Aren't they all? Here you are." Rita: "Thank you." Leela: "Do you feel better now?" Rita: "A little. Thank you." Doctor: (sits) "So, Ian, how are you. And where's Barbara? I expected to see her too." Ted: "Barbara's dead, Doctor." Doctor: "Oh dear. What happened?" Ted: "We were in our boat on the north Wales coast. I'm afraid she drowned." Doctor: "I'm so sorry. I always liked her." Ted: "I know." Doctor: "Wasn't such a sceptic as you, Ian." Ted: "No." Doctor: "Did Ian tell you, Rita, about how we first met?" Rita: "Who's Ian?" Doctor: "The man holding your hand." Rita: "Oh." Leela: "Do you not even know your own husband?" Rita: "Apparently not." Ted: "I will explain everything, Rita. I promise." Rita: "I can't wait(!) I thought your wife's name was Doris." Ted: "It is. Well, was. Well-" Rita: "You'll explain later, I know. And yes, Doctor. He did tell me." Ted: "But she didn't believe a word of it." Doctor: "Have you never heard of Daleks, Cybermen, Yeti or even the Nestenes then, Mrs Chesterton?" Ted: "Rita." Rita: "Yes?" Ted: "The Doctor's talking to you." Rita: "Is he? I'm sorry. It's not easy you know, having just got used to being called Sullivan, only to find out it's really Chesterton." Ted: "It is Sullivan, Rita." Rita: "Is it?" Ted: "Yes." Rita: "If you say so. No, Doctor. I've never heard of them. Should I have?" Doctor: "I suppose not. UNIT and the governments would've done a good cover-up job on all that." Rita: "I haven't a clue what you're talking about." Doctor: "No? Oh well, never mind." Ted: "You know, Doctor. Rita's last boyfriend looked just like Marco Polo." Doctor: "Did he really? Was he nice?" Rita: "Not really. He tried to kill me." Doctor: "Oh, I wouldn't take it personally. People are trying to kill me all the time. Try not to worry about it." Rita: "I'll do my best(!)" Doctor: "So, how long have you two been married?" Ted: "Three months, but we've known each other for twenty years." Doctor: "That's nice." Rita: "It would be if I really knew Ted. Ian. Oh, I can't take any more of this." Ted: "What's up?" Rita: "Don't you know? If you'll excuse me, Doctor. Leela." Ted: "Rita!" Rita: "I'm sorry, Ted, but I've had more than I can take for one day."
Rita got up and went to the bedroom.
Ted: "I'd better go after her." Doctor: "Leave her for a while, Ian. Let her sort things out for herself." Ted: "Okay, Doctor." Doctor: "Then perhaps you can tell me what all that was about, and why you wanted to see me." Ted: "The fact is, I'm dying, Doctor. I was resigned to it before I fell in love with Rita, but now I want to live." Doctor: "Everyone has to die, Ian." Ted: "I know. But I want more time with Rita. This illness has put her through hell more than me, and I just want to be happy with a longer future." Doctor: "And what do you expect me to do about it?" Ted: "Take me somewhere I can be cured." Doctor: "I can't do that, Ian." Ted: "Why not?" Doctor: "It's interferring with history." Ted: "But I'm not history yet." Doctor: "I'm sorry, Ian, but there's nothing I can do." Ted: "You owe me!" Doctor: "I know I do, but I just can't do it. I'm sorry." Ted: "Sorry?! Sorry?! After everything we went through together. The number of times I've saved your life, and you're sorry?! I don't believe you!" Leela: "I think I will go and find out how Rita is." Doctor: "Ian, I've already saved your life several times too." Ted: "So what difference would once more make?" Doctor: "And what if I did, eh? You'll be asking for immortality next." Ted: "I don't want immortality, Doctor. I realise I'm just a mere human being with a limited lifespan, unlike you. But I would just like to have a few more years with my wife." Doctor: "I can undertand that, Ian, but I just cannot do it." Ted: "Or won't do it. Have you forgotten what it's like to be in love, Doctor?" Doctor: "I have never been in love, Ian." Ted: "No? What about Susan's grandmother?" Doctor: "Arranged marriage." Ted: "Cameca then." Doctor: "Cameca? Ahh, Cameca. Oh, yes." Ted: "Your fiancé." Doctor: "I'd forgotten all about her." Ted: "I hadn't." Doctor: "Well, a Time Lord's brain is infinitely more superior to that of humans. I wonder what happened to her. All right, Ian." Ted: "You'll help me?" Doctor: " I'll think about it. Now, tell me all about your condition, and why Rita's so upset." Ted: "Thanks, Doctor.

Part 3
Rita was still lying on the bed crying. She heard the argument between Ted and the Doctor and covered her ears, but it was no good. She removed her hands when it all went quiet, heard a knock at the door and the handle turning. Thinking it was Ted, she ignored it until it seemed like the door would end up being broken down.
Rita: "Rita: "Go away, Ted! Leave me alone!" Leela: "It is Leela. Can I come in?" Rita: "Did Ted send you?" Leela: "Ted?" Rita: "Ian, then. Or whatever his name is now." Leela: "No." Rita: "The Doctor?" Leela: "No. I wanted to check you were fine."
There was no answer. Leela was worried and was about to knock, when she heard the key turn and saw the door open.
Rita: "Well, I haven't got round to slashing my wrists yet, but it's only a matter of time." Leela: "Sorry?" Rita: "Forget it. Come in then." Leela: "Thank you." Rita: "And close the door." Leela: "Okay. You have been crying." Rita: "Isn't that what we woman always do when we're in love?" Leela: "Love?" Rita: "Have you never been in love?" Leela: "I do not know what it is." Rita: "Well, you've got a lot to learn then. Look, why are you here?" Leela: "I came with the Doctor." Rita: "I know that. I meant HERE, to see me." Leela: "Ian wanted to come, but the Doctor told him to leave you." Rita: "Did he now." Leela: "No, after you came in here." Rita: "Never mind. Known the Doctor long, have you?" Leela: "Time is relative, the Doctor says." Rita: "Really." Leela: "But I have been away from my tribe for a long time." Rita: "Your tribe?" Leela: "I am a warrior of the Sevateem." Rita: "Really. And where's that then?" Leela: "About 5000 years in the future, the Doctor says." Rita: "The Doctor seems to say a lot of things." Leela: "He is a very wise shaman." Rita: "I'll take your word for that." Leela: "What has made you sad?" Rita: "You wouldn't understand." Leela: "I understand a lot of things. The Doctor teaches me." Rita: "Well it's too... err... hard to explain." Leela: "But it is something to do with Ian?" Rita: "Ian? Oh, yes. But don't worry about it, Leela. I'm sure we'll work it out." Leela: "I hope so. Shall I stay?" Rita: "There's no need. I'm fine now, really. I'll be out soon." Leela: "All right. Ian is a very lucky man." (leaves) Rita: "Yeah? Pity he doesn't agree with you then."
A few minutes later, Ted burst into the room and hugged her tightly.
Rita: "You're crushing me!" Ted: "Sorry, Rita, love. I'm just so happy." Rita: "About what? That you've lied to me yet again?" Ted: "Oh that. Never mind that. This is more important." Rita: "What is?" Ted: "The Doctor's agreed to help me. We've got a future, Rita. Isn't it great?" Rita: "A future built on what, Ted? Because it certainly isn't love." Ted: "You think I don't love you?" Rita: "I'm only your nursemaid. You had to get someone, since Barbara couldn't do it now." Ted: "That's rubbish, Rita." Rita: "Is it?" Ted: "You know what I was like before." Rita: "A lying bastard." Ted: "Rita!" Rita: "Well, weren't you?" Ted: "In a small way. But I was all set to retire and go to Florida." Rita: "Yes. And right now I wish you'd just said goodbye and gone." Ted: "Rita. You don't mean that surely." Rita: "I said right now, Ted." Ted: "And before I mentioned the Doctor?" Rita: "Does it matter?" Ted: "Thank you." Rita: "For what?" Ted: "Answering my question." Rita: "I wasn't aware I had." Ted: "It wasn't what you said, but how you didn't say it." Rita: "I'll just have to be more careful what I say in future, won't I?" Ted: "That's my whole point. I fell in love with a woman I'd known for twenty years. I was all set to go over there and die alone in the sun. I love you so much, Rita. I hate putting you through all this. And for how long? So the Doctor finally agreed to help. He says he knows just the place. They can cure anything in the future, Rita." Rita: "I heard the row. What made him change his mind when he was so set against it?" Ted: "A little reminder of his past. He understands what's it's like to know a love can't last, and how painful just the thought of it ending can be." Rita: "Is he and Leela..." Ted: "No! After Cameca, he detached himself from that sort of emotional tie." Rita: "Speaking of pasts, Ted." Ted: "I know. You want to know why I lied to you." Rita: "Again." Ted: "I didn't really, you know. I just didn't say anything in case you thought I really was mad. Listen, Rita. Although Barbara and I enjoyed being with the Doctor, finding out he could change his whole body was really just too much for us. There was no way either of us could go through that again. So, we changed our names and moved to Manchester because we didn't want the Doctor finding us." Rita: "But the accent, Ted. You've never spoken any other way in twenty years." Ted: "Put on at first, but it seems to have stuck I'm afraid. Barbara hated it." Rita: "I see. But your sister and her family." Ted: "Well, we had to tell them, didn't we? The Doctor knows nothing about them." Rita: "Oh, Ted." Ted: "I may have once had a completely different name and life. But I'm still the same man who wanted you to marry him, Rita. Still the man who loves you, and refuses to wither away without one last ditch effort. This is probably the only chance I've got, Rita. And, as I'm one of the select few who know the Doctor, I'm going to seize that chance by the throat. So, are you coming with me to this future hospital the Doctor knows about, or not?" Rita: "Do I have a choice." Ted: "I just gave you one." Rita: "Oh no, you didn't. But I'll be glad when you do." Ted: "Cheeky. Well? Are we in this together, or would you rather go to my funeral?" Rita: "Oh, Ted." Ted: "You do look good in black, you know." Rita: "I've had enough practice. How would we get there?" Ted: "In the Tardis, of course." Rita: "Have you seen the size of it?" Ted: "I did in 1963. I assure you, there's plenty of room inside." Rita: "If you say so. After all, you have already been in it." Ted: "You believe me now then." Rita: "I'd have thought that was obvious, wouldn't you?" Ted: "Well?" Rita: "All right. When do we leave?" Ted: "The Doctor says we can leave now if we want." Rita: "Right then. I'll go and make some excuse to Mavis, and I'll meet you outside. Okay?" Ted: "Okay. You won't regret it." Rita: "I'd better not." Ted: "Don't worry, love. I'll look after you." Rita: "I should hope so. Oh, Ted?" Ted: "Yes, Rita, love?" Rita: "How long will we be?" Ted: "Time is relative, Rita." Rita: "So that young girl said." Ted: "We might be days or weeks. But the Tardis can bring us home a few seconds after we left." Rita: "That's ridiculous." Ted: "You don't know the ship, Rita. And apparently, the Doctor can actually work it properly now." Rita: "Really." Ted: "Well, better that when we last travelled with him anyway." Rita: "You and Barbara." Ted: "That's right." Rita: "I'll take your word for it. Right, I'll go and see Mavis then."
Meanwhile outside the Rovers, Bet Gilroy and Audrey Roberts were talking.
Bet: "How's Rita?" Audrey: "Well, I think. I'm just on my way to see her." Bet: "Do you mind if I come with you?" Audrey: "Of course not. Oh look. There's Ted and Rita now. It looks like they're off out somewhere." Bet: "I wonder who those other two are." Audrey: "I've never seen either of them before. Friends, do you think?" Bet: "Or relatives. I've never seen that blue box before either." Audrey: "Neither have I. But they're going insode it. Oooh, what's that dreadful noise?" Bet: "More to the point, Audrey. Where's the box gone?" ------------------------- Ted: "Well, Rita?" Rita: "I just don't believe it." Ted: "Neither did I at first. Did I, Doctor?" Rita: "He was convinced it was an illusion." Ted: "And Barbara tried to convince Susan all this was a game you two were playing." Doctor: "I remember." Leela: "Who is Susan, Doctor?" Doctor: "Believe it or not, my granddaughter." Leela: "But you are not old enough." Doctor: "Isn't she sweet? Having her around is good for my ego." Ted: "Well, Doctor, flattery gets you anywhere in time and space." Leela: "I thought the Tardis did that." Ted: "Err... quite. Well, Doctor. You've made some changes since we last saw you I see." Doctor: "Well, you know how it is. Are you hungry?" Ted: "Oh, yes. Rita?" Rita: "No. Not at the moment." Doctor: "Since you and Barbara left, I've made changes to the food machine." Ted: "What sort of changes?" Doctor: "Oh, little things. For instande, it now gives real food and even cups of tea." Ted: "Now that I've got to see. Er... I hope the bacon isn't too salty, eh, Doctor." Doctor: "Ha, Ha(!) Come along, Chesterton." Ted: "Now that takes me back, Doctor." Doctor: "Thought it would. Come on then." Ted: "Right. Rita?" Rita: "Hmmm?" Ted: "Are you coming?" Rita: "I think I better had, don't you?" Ted: "I know it's a bit of a shock, love, but you'll soon get used to it. Won't she, Doctor?" Doctor: "Of course she will. I'll give you the guided tour afterwards. This place is bigger than it looks." Ted: "You can say that again." -------------------------- Bet: "Mavis, where's Rita gone?" Mavis: "She went for a drive with Ted." Audrey: "Her car's still outside." Mavis: "They must've used Ted's then. No? Why all the questions anyway?" Audrey: "Because something strange is going on." Mavis: "Strange? Oh, come on, Audrey." Bet: "It's true, Mave. We've just seen Rita and Ted get into a blue box that was parked outside." Mavis: "And where's this blue box now?" Audrey: "That's just it, Mavis. It disappeared into thin air." Mavis: "Now I know you're talking nonsense. Have you both been drinking?" Bet: "All right. It's obvious you don't believe us. But ask Rita when she gets back." Mavis: "Don't worry, I will. And no doubt, she'll confirm what I said.

Part 4
Rita was dizzy with shock at everything that was happening to her.
Rita: "That's the bathroom?!" Doctor: "Nice, isn't it? Mind you, it could do with a spot of redecoration." Rita: "It's a swimming pool!" Doctor, "Well, at least you can lie in it without getting a stiff neck." Ted: "I have to confess, Doctor, I don't recognise the place anymore." Doctor: "You and Barbara never really went too far from the console room, did you?" Ted: "Are you kidding? We wanted to be able to keep an eye on you." Doctor: "I wasn't that bad, surely." Ted: "No. But you could be a wily old fox at times. Look at the mess you got us into on Skaro. And all because you had to get your own way, and see the Dalek city." Leela: "He still likes to get his own way." Ted: "That I can believe. What's in here, Doctor?" Doctor: "Storage bay." Ted: "What do you keep in there? Or shouldn't I ask?" Doctor: "Oh, odds and ends, you know. The occasional souvenir. Would you like to have a look?" Ted: "Why not? There might be a few things I recognise." Doctor: "Come on then."
The Doctor opened the door, switched on the light and went in. Ted was gobsmacked, as was Rita, but Leela took it in her stride and followed him.
Doctor: "Well? Impressive, isn't it?" Ted: "It's enormous!" Doctor: "Come on, Ian. You know about relative dimensions." Ted: "How could I forget?" Doctor: "You're quiet, Rita." Rita: "I'm still trying to take in the fact this is all real." Doctor: "Why don't you both have a look around. You can keep anything you fancy." Ted: "Really?" Doctor: "Of course. It just clutters up the pleace really. I've been meaning to have a clear-out for centuries. Your 'Roman souvenir' could be among that lot." Ted: "Now I'd really like that. Thanks, Doctor." Doctor: "My pleasure." Ted: "Come on, Rita."
While Ted dragged a reluctant Rita around, Leela decided to have a look, and spotted a dark round disc with a motif on it. She picked it up.
Leela: "What's this, Doctor?" Doctor: "This? Oh, nothing really. Just something a rather sweet Aztec lady gave me." Ted: "Aztecs? Let's have a look, Doctor." Doctor: "Must you?" Ted: "What's the secret, Doctor?" Doctor: "No secret, I assure you." Rita: "Ted..." Doctor: (sighs) "Oh, very well. Here." Ted: "Thanks. Ha! No wonder you wanted to hide it." Leela: "What is it?" Doctor: "I've already told you." Ted: "I wondered what you'd done with it. You old romantic you." Doctor: "Not anymore I'm not."
The Doctor was slightly irritated and tried to snatch it from him, but Ted pulled it away.
Ted: "No? Then why don't we pop back and visit her?" Doctor: "I'd rather not. I thought you were in a hurry to get better." Ted: "Oh, I am. But there's no harm in going afterwards, is there?" Doctor: "It's my Tardis, and I'll not go if I don't want to." Ted: "Suit yourself." Doctor: "I will." Ted: "Fine. You don't mind if I keep this, do you, Doctor?" Doctor: "Of course not. I said you could keep anything you wanted." Ted: "Thanks. But are you sure? It could be very valuable." Doctor: "Priceless. Keep it." K9: "Master." Rita: "What's that?" Doctor: "My dog. What is it, K9?" K9: "We have arrived, master." Doctor: "Good. Come on then, Ian. Let's get you cured." Ted: "Great!" Rita: "But where are we?" Doctor: "The Bi-Al Fooundation. Around 5000AD. I came here with a spot of bother a while back. Didn't I, Leela?" Leela: "Yes, Doctor." Doctor: "They're very good. Well, not quite as good as me, but you can't have everything." Ted: "I see your modesty's improved, Doctor(!)" Leela: "Will we see Professor Marinus?" Doctor: "We might do. Come on then you lot."
They all followed the Doctor back towards the console room. The Doctor opened the doors."
Ted: "Just a minute, Doctor. I'd like a quiet word with Rita first." Doctor: "I understand. We'll wait outside and I'll book you in. Come on, Leela. You stay here, K9." K9: "Master?" Doctor: "Just go and do something to occupy yourself, so Rita and Ian can have some privacy, eh." K9: "Master." (leaves) Doctor: "Good boy." (leaves) Rita: "What do you want to talk to me about, Ted?" Ted: "Rita, you know I love you." Rita: "But." Ted: "If anything should go wrong-" Rita: "You said you'd be cured." Ted: "I know. But you have to be realistic, you know." Rita: "Surely this Doctor of yours wouldn't have brought you three thousand years into the future if there was any chance of it not working." Ted: "I know. But humour me, eh." Rita: (sighs) "All right, Ted. If anything goes wrong..." Ted: "Whatever you do, don't let Phillip get his grubby hands on my money." Rita: "Your brother-in-law. Why not?" Ted: "Because he's a bastard. He'll say and do all sorts. He may even use Sarah to get at you. She's very gullible. He can talk her round to his devious way of thinking. Only trust Roger. Promise me, Rita." Rita: "All right, Ted. I promise. Is that it?" Ted: "Yes." Rita: "Good. Oh, Ted. What was all that about in the storage room?" Ted: "Part of the Doctor's past I think he'd rather forget about. And he was trying to prove it to me by letting me keep the disc." Rita: "Are you going to?" Ted: "I won't have to. I'll call his bluff. You watch, Rita. Before we get home, he'll ask for it back." Rita: "You can be cruel at times, Ted Sullivan." Ted: "Cruel? It's only a bit of fun." Rita: "Come on. The Doctor and Leela are waiting." Ted: "Okay." ---------------------------- Doctor: "Is Professor Marinus still here?" Nurse: "I'm afraid not. He was killed when the Cybermen invaded." Ted: "Cybermen?" Doctor: "Of course. You never met any. I'll explain about them later. So, when were the Cybermen here?" Nurse: "Not long ago. It was quite a battle." Doctor: "But you got them in the end, eh?" Ted: "Painful." Doctor: "Sorry?" Nurse: "It was the Professor who discovered gold killed them." Doctor: "Really? How?" Nurse: "One shot him and, as he fell, his gold-tipped scalpel went into the monster." Doctor: "At least his death served a useful purpose." Leela: "You are happy the Professor died?" Doctor: "of course I'm not. He was a good man. Well, no use dwelling on the past. We must get our friend here better." Nurse: "Please follow me, Mr Chesterton. Would the rest of you wait here." Doctor: "Of course." Rita: "Can't I go with him?" Ted: "She's my wife. Please." Nurse: "It's against regulations. But if you'd like her to be with you, I'm sure it'll be all right. This way."
Ted took Rita's hand and smiled. She knew he was trying to reassure her, but knew he was only putting on a brave face. They followed the nurse to level 3X and were led into a room where a doctor greeted them.
Nurse: "Ian Chesterton, doctor." Roverio: "Ah. Do sit down, Mr Chesterton. I'm doctor Roverio." Ted: "Hello, doctor. This is my wife, Rita. It is all right if she stays with me?" Roverio: "If that's what you want. Now, there's really no need to be nervous, Mr Chesterton." Ted: "I'm trying not to be, doctor." Roverio: "I understand you're suffering from a brain tumour." Ted: "That's right." Roverio: "Very rare." Ted: "Is it?" Roverio: "All cancers have been eradicated, you know." Ted: "Oh? How's that then?" Roverio: "Surely you have the relevant anti-body in your bloodstream." Ted: "Apparently not." Rovario: "Strange. But no matter. It can still be removed." Rita: "Will there be much pain involved?" Roverio: "I shouldn't think so. If you'd just come with me, Mr Chesterton." Ted: "What about my wife?" Roverio: "I'm sorry, Mr Chesterton. Only staff and patients are allowed in the treatment room." Rita: "It's okay, Ted. I'll wait here. Good luck, love." Ted: "I hope I'll not need any."
Rita watched them disappear and sat down. She still found everything she'd seen and heard totally unbelievable. Travelling in time and space in an obsolete police box that was bigger on the inside than the outside, no more cancers. Probably no more disease at all, she concluded. People probably lived forever by this time. The screams she heard in the corridor couldn't distract her thoughts of her husband and his entire different life. She didn't believe for a second he really would be cured, but had to humour him. Less than 10 minutes passed when Ted, the doctor and nurse re-remerged. Slowly she got to her feet, afraid it had failed and she'd lose Ted after all.
Rita: "Well?" Ted: "Very, thank you." Rita: "This is no time for jokes, Ted." Ted: "It's not a joke, Rita. Tell her, doctor." Roverio: "He's completely cured, Mrs Chesterton." Rita: "The tumour's gone?" Ted: "It certainly has." Roverio: "And we included the anti-bodies in the injection, so he'll never have any more cancers." Rita: "So soon?" Ted: "Anyone'd think you wanted me dead." Rita: "No, of course I don't. I just didn't expect it to be over this fast." Ted: "Great, isn't it? We've got a future now, Rita. We can do anything we want. Anywhere." Rita: "I just can't take it in. For the fast five months, I've tried to prepare myself for the day you... And now I find out it could be years off." Roverio: "Well, I hate to be a miserable so-and-so, but I'm afraid I'm expecting another patient." Ted: "Oh, sorry, doctor. Thanks for everything." Roverio: "That's what I'm paid for." Rita: "Nevertheless, thank you, from the bottom of my heart." Ted: "And she has a very big heart." Rovrio: "Thank you. You can settle the bill at reception." Rita: "Bill?" Ted: "That's fine. Thank you." (leaves) Roverio: "Oh, Mrs Chesterton?" Rita: "Yes?" Roverio: "Tell me to mind my own business if you like, but I couldn't help wondering why you call your husband Ted when his name's Ian." Rita: "Oh. Well, er... That's because Ted's his middle name. He hates Ian." Roverio: "I see." Rita: "Thank you again, doctor. Goodbye." (leaves) Ted: "What was that about?" Rita: "I had to say something, didn't I?" Nurse: "I'll take you to reception." Ted: "Thanks." Rita: "I wonder if the Doctor and Leela are still there." Ted: "They'd better be." Rita: "Why? What's to stop him leaving us here?" Ted: "Nothing I suppose. But the Doctor has to pay the bill." Rita: "Does he know?" Ted: "If he doesn't he soon will."
They arrived in reception and were shocked to see several dead bodies.
Rita: "Oh, my God!" Doctor: "Thank goodness you two are all right. I was very worried, but they wouldn't let us go to you." Ted: "What happened?" Rita: "And what are those tin things?" Doctor: "Those 'tin things', as you call them, Rita, are Cybermen" Ted: "I thought the nurse said they were all destroyed." Doctor: "They were. But this was a fresh invasion. They wanted to know what happened to the last lot." Ted: "Are they all dead now, Doctor?" Doctor: "Oh, yes." Ted: "But why attack a hospital?" Doctor: "They were hoping to use it as some sort of base. But I soon got them to change their minds." Rita: "How?" Doctor: "It's far too complicated to go into. Suffice to say, there won't be anymore trouble from them now." Rita: "Where's Leela? Is she...?" Doctor: "Just wounded. Stupid girl thought she could kill them with a janus thorn. I told her umpteen times it wouldn't work, but does she ever listen? Rita: "Where is she?" Doctor: "In the Tardis." Rita: "I'll go to her." Doctor: "You do that. Ian, I have a bone to pick with you. How are you, by the way?" Ted: "In that order, eh? I'm cured, thank you. But I didn't realise you had to pay." Doctor: "I'll take care of all that." Ted: "So, this bone." Doctor: "You forgot to lock the Tardis. A Cyberman could've got inside, you know." Ted: "I don't have a key, Doctor." Doctor: "Don't you? Oh, sorry. My fault then." (slaps hand) "Don't you ever do that again, Doctor. I won't, Doctor. Good." Ted: "I think those regenerations of yours are affecting your brain, Doctor." Doctor: "Nonsense." Ted: "Do you often talk to yourself like that?" Doctor: "How else am I supposed to have at least a half-intelligent conversation? Right, let's settle the bill and get you two back home." Ted: "Good idea."

Part 5
So, the Doctor returned them to Coronation Street. The Tardis materialised in the same place. Rita took the Doctor and Leela up to the flat, while Ted got the shopping from Alf's. They'd just sat down to tea and biscuits when Ted came in. He took the box of groceries into the kitchen then joined them.
Ted: "Percy Sugden's got a bowls competition on today. I said we'd go." Rita: "Bowls? But it's so boring, Ted." Ted: "Well, we can cross it off our list of things never to do again when we get back. Come on. After what we've been through, it'll be fun." Rita: "Fun?! Well, I suppose anything is comic relief after that lot." Ted: "What about you, Doctor? Will you come?" Doctor: "I have to agree with Rita. But I suppose it will be good for Leela to learn about insomnia cures. So yes. I'll come." Ted: "Great! Oh." Rita: "What?" Ted: "Whose car will we take?" Doctor: "Oh, don't worry about that." Ted: "Oh?" Doctor: "We'll take the Tardis. If we can manage to materialise in some bushes or something, I'm sure it'll be less conspiculous than it is out there." Ted: "Right, that's settled then. Got anymore digestives, love?"
Several hours later they were all at the game. The Doctor and Leela kept to one side, and Ted complained he felt hot, so moved to the bench in the shade. The Doctor and Leela spotted a flash behind Ted. The Doctor rushed behind and saw the reason - a Cyberman. Quickly, he rummaged in his pockets, found a gold coin and shoved it into its chest unit. Once the game was over and Percy had lost, Rita went to wake Ted up.
Rita: "Ted. Ted."
She shook him gently and he slipped sideways. She saw his shirt was badly singed at the back, and was about to examine it when she caught movement and a glint of silver from behind the bush. She went round and saw the Doctor carrying the Cyberman over his shoulder.
Rita: "Doctor?" Doctor: "Ah. Rita." Rita: "Is that what I think it is?" Doctor: "I'm afraid so." Rita: "How did it get here?" Doctor: "Ah. I'm afraid it looks like it got into the Tardis at the Foundation." Rita: "Ted's dead." Doctor: "I know. I'm sorry." Rita: "You're sorry(?) It's all your fault!" Doctor: "I realise that, but-" Rita: "You agreed with one hand to give him a future, and take it away with the other. You're a bastard." Doctor: "I've been called far worse than that, Rita." Rita: "I'm not surprised. Bring him back." Doctor: "I can't." Rita: "You helped him get his tumour cured, so you can do that." Doctor: "I really can't, Rita. I've lost too many good friends over the centuries and it's hard. But as a Timelord, I am bound by the laws of time, no matter how much I'd like to bring them back. I'm sorry." Rita: "I wish Ted had never contacted you. I wish he'd never even met you. He'd have been better off dying of his tumour than getting killed by that... thing." Doctor: "Perhaps he would have been." Rita: "Oh, get out of my sight."
Rita went back to Ted, sat beside him and cradled him in her lap.
Leela: "She is very angry." Doctor: "And I don't blame her. It was my fault Ian's dead. I should've checked the Tardis to make sure we didn't have any unwelcome visitors. Come on, Leela. Let's get away from here and dispose of this."
The following week was Ted's funeral. After the service, everyone started to leave the crematorium. Rita stopped dead in her tracks when she saw the Doctor by the doors. She took a deep breath, and followed him outside into the rain, and into a quiet corner.
Rita: "What the hell do you think you're doing here?" Doctor: "I had to pay my respects, Rita. He was a very dear friend of mine, you know." Rita: "Then if he meant that much to you, you should've brought him back, shouldn't you?" Doctor: "I've already explained all that." Rita: "Yeah, but I don't believe you." Leela: "Doctor, that man over there." Doctor: "Leela, please." Leela: "The one with the hair on his face. He looks like Calib." Rita: "Calib?" Leela: "From my tribe. Is it him?" Rita: "It's Ted's brother-in-law, Phillip." Doctor: "Leela, please go back to the Tardis." Leela: "I understand when I am not wanted. Goodbye, Rita. I am sorry Ian has died. He was a nice man." (leaves) Rita: "At least she cares, and she hardly knew him." Doctor: "Rita-" Rita: "She'd never have let him die." Doctor: "And if I'd seen the Cybermean, I wouldn't have either. You've got to believe that, Rita." Rita: "Then bring him back." Doctor: "I can't change the past. If I did, there'd be two of him walking around, and that would cause the Blinovitch Limitation Effect. It would be an enormous catastrophe, Rita. Probably end your world. Would you like one man to live at the expense of billions of others? Possibly including yourself?" Rita: "Don't try to scare me with rubbish, Doctor. I'm not Leela, you know." Doctor: "I'm not trying to. It happens to be a fact. I'm sorry." Rita: "So I'm alone again, after all that hope. God really must hate me to have put me through hell all these years. I'm obviously not meant to be happy." Doctor: "Will you be okay?" Rita: "I'll have to be, won't I?" Doctor: "If I could change things, Rita, I would you know. Without hesitation." Rita: "You must have a great deal on your shoulders. I'm sorry for my behaviour, Doctor." Doctor: "I expected it. I know it's all my fault. No one has to tell me." Rita: "Thanks for coming." Doctor: "Are you sure about that?" Rita: "Yeah. Oh, Doctor." Doctor: "Yes?" Rita: "I thought you might like this back. Ted was sure you'd ask him for it." Doctor: "Thank you. I'd forgotten all about it. Tell you what. Why don't you keep it." Rita: "But isn't it supposed to be special to you?" Doctor: "It was. A very long time ago. Several lifetimes in fact. Keep it. Sell it. Do whatever you want with it." Rita: "Well, if you're sure." Doctor: "I am." Rita: "Was she very special to you?" Doctor: "Cameca? Yes, she was, Rita. But as you know, the Aztecs were doomed and there was noting I could do about it. Or her." Rita: "I'm sorry." Doctor: "Don't be. It was over 300 years ago in my lifetime. I used to smoke a pipe back then too." Rita: "Did you give it up?" Doctor: "No. I got a bang on the head, and I never smoked again." Rita: (laughs) "Well, I'd better be going before they come looking for me." Doctor: "Yes." Rita: "Are you and Leela coming back to the flat?" Doctor: "I don't think so, Rita. There's bound to be all sorts of awkward questions. Who are you? Have you known Ted long? Where did you first meet? That sort of thing." Rita: "Yes. Hey. You called him Ted. That's a first." Doctor: "I supoose so. But I'm afraid he'll always be Ian Chesterton to me." Rita: "Yes. Well, goodbye, Doctor. Take care of yourself and Leela. Even though I'm sure she can take care of herself." Doctor: "Oh, she can!"
Rita returned to her flat, while the Doctor and Leela returned to the vortex. Rita had to make up all sorts of lies about Ted to her friends and, like Ted predicted, fought Phillip over the will. But she never forgot the Doctor.
The End

LOL! I know. I thought I'd put it all up at once but noticed I still left some spelling mistakes in. It's actually one of the shortest stories I've ever written. A Reet one I did in 2002 as a sequel ended up (handwritten first) 107 pages long! I had a DW writing phase for a while (well, about 4 years) and mostly did the 4th Doctor and Leela as well as other crossovers like Upstairs Downstairs and Blakes 7. Patsy

bravo bravo!! I`m not usually a Dr Who fan (except for the gorgous Chris Eccleston), but I was reading this while eating a cheese and tomato sarnie. Both were excellent by the way! ;D *click*

I'm blushing, CorrieGirl. It does help reading it to know the 4th Doctor and Leela so you can imagine them saying and doing things. Course, poor old Ted just had to die anyway. But a Cyberman shooting you in the back is better than fading away! LOL! For anyone that doesn't know, the lovely Mark Eden (Alan Bradley) played Marco Polo in Dr Who when Williams Russell was Ian, hence the reference. Pity it was destroyed by the Beeb and only audio remains. Patsy

Post by RitaLittlewood on Jul 6, 2005 16:18:36 GMT
Because I'm mad and have an overactive imagination. LOL! I don't remember really. It just came to me one day how good it might be for Ted to have really been Ian Chesterton and Ted's first wife Doris being Barbara Wright. I mean, Ted was going a bit mad with his brain tumour and coming out with nonsense so it was obvious Reet would think he was talking rubbish again.

Plenty because my mind's wacky! LOL! Some might go up on here. Not sure. I have something I did during 2002 and 2003 which ended up being VERY long (but much shorter parts) and was sort of in real time. I had Ken Barlow turned gay. LOL!
