This is originally 2 stories written back in September 2002 but I've put them together. Later reading may become uncomfortable as there is certain violence happening. Not in graphic detail, but suggested.
Part 1
Autumn 1967 in Weatherfield, Lancashire. Rita Littlewood had just finished her stint for the night dancing at the Orinocco club, and returned to the so-called dressing room she shared with half a dozen other girls. She opened the door and tried holding her breath as she entered. She threw her feathers down and flopped in her chair. She wasn't alone. Another girl was readying herself for her appearance.
Rita: "I don't know why I keep doing this." Verna: "Money, love." Rita: "What else? Pity our so-called agent is always more well off than we are." Verna: "They always are. We're in the wrong game." Rita: "Ooh, it really stinks in here." Verna: "It's the drains." Rita: "High time they got something done about them. Got a fag, love?" Verna: "Help yourself." Rita: "Cheers." Verna: "One of these days I'm sure a lit match will blow the place up." Rita: "Bound to be an improvement." Verna: "Not with us inside." Rita: "To be honest, I'm that jiggered I wouldn't feel a thing and am past caring."
As Rita reached across for Verna's Players and matches and lit up, there was a knock at the door before it opened and a short little man entered.
Alec: "Everyone decent?" Rita: "Is it me, or has that stench suddenly got worse?" Verna: "It's worse. I'd best get out there. See you later?" Rita: "I think I'll crawl home as soon as I've got changed." Verna: "Don't blame you. Tomorrow, then?" Rita: "Oh, yeah. I have to come back to earn his money. I'm beginning to have nightmares about this place." Verna: "I know the feeling. See yer. Alec." Alec: "Verna." Rita: "Night, kid."
Verna left and Alec perched in front of Rita. She blew smoke in his face which made him cough.
Alec: "Have I done something to upset you, Rita?" Rita: "Whatever gives you that idea(?)" Alec: "Look, I know you're not all that keen on working here-" Rita: "How observant of you(!)" Alec: "It's only for another week." Rita: "Another week?! That's what you said two months ago!" Alec: "Is it my fault I've not been able to find you a more suitable booking yet?" Rita: "Yes! You're supposed to be my agent. That means, you're also supposed to get me proper work." Alec: "I am trying, you know." Rita: "You've always been that, Gilroy. Well, I've had enough." Alec: "What?" Rita: "If you think I'm coming back here for another night, let alone a week to entertain those drunks, you need your head testing." Alec: "I'm working on getting you something better." Rita: "I don't care. I've had it with you. Tomorrow, I'm going to start looking for another agent." Alec: "You can't do that, Rita." Rita: "Give me one good reason." Alec: "Well... Because you're my Weatherfield nightingale." Rita: "That's as maybe. But, if you'd not clipped my wings, I'd have taken flight as far away from you as humanly possible years ago." Alec: "You don't mean that." Rita: "Don't I?" Alec: "I discovered you." Rita: "So?" Alec: "I'm helping you up the career ladder." Rita: "Down into the sewer more like. Get out of my sight before I stub this out on your fat, little head." Alec: "If I get you out of here, will you change your mind?" Rita: "Perhaps. Then again, perhaps not." Alec: "What do you mean by that?" Rita: "It depends on WHEN you get me out of this cesspit, and WHAT you get for me to do instead. Goodbye, Alec." Alec: "Rita-"
She moved the smouldering cigarette towards him which made him quickly get up and leave. She sighed heavily and dragged on the cigarette again. She looked around for an ashtray but couldn't see one, so stubbed it out on the wall and tossed it over her shoulder. She looked at herself in the filthy mirror, sighed again, got changed and went home.
The next morning, Rita was awoken by persistant banging on her front door. She pulled the pillow over her head, swore, got out of bed, pulled her dressing gown around her and answered it.
Rita: "What the flaming hell do you want?" Alec: "You wanted me to get you another job, so I have." Rita: "Doing what?" Alec: "Er... dancing." Rita: "Sod off, Gilroy!"
She went to slam the door, but he put his foot in.
Rita: "If you don't shift that, I'll hack it off." Alec: "There's no pleasing you, is there, Rita?" Rita: "I'm sick of flaming dancing! You promised me singing jobs. Yet all I've done most of this past year is choke on feathers." Alec: "Get dressed." Rita: "I beg your pardon?" Alec: "You've got to go for an audition." Rita: "Thought you said you'd got this job." Alec: "He wants to see you first. It's a start at least. Stop being so ungrateful." Rita: "I'll stop when you get me decent work with proper money." Alec: "It does pay more, Rita." Rita: "How much more?" Alec: "Two pounds." Rita: "Two pounds?!" Alec: "It's more than you get at the Orinocco." Rita: "And more to go in your pocket." Alec: "Do you want this job, or not?" Rita: "Doesn't look like I have a lot of choice, does it? Wait there." Alec: "Aren't you going to let me in?" Rita: "Is that a serious question?" Alec: "Of course it is." Rita: "Look, Gilroy. It's bad enough being leered at by all those leches without worrying about you trying to peep through the keyhole." Alec: "Would I do that to you?" Rita: "Yes. You stay there." Alec: "I have far too much respect for you, Rita, to do anything like that." Rita: "Then if you have so much respect, you won't object to staying right where you are."
With that she slammed the door and got herself ready. When she was, Alec drove her to see Morry Goldapper at the Riviera Club.
Alec: "Here she is, Morry. What do you think?" Morry: "Well, she's not a bad looker, I suppose. Isn't she a bit old for this though, Alec?" Rita: "Hey. I am here, you know." Morry: "I can see that, love." Rita: "Then ask me, not him." Alec: "You must excuse Rita, Morry. She's always tetchy in the mornings." Rita: "Is it any wonder when you come banging on my door at the crack of dawn? I didn't get to bed till gone three." Alec: "It was half ten, Rita." Rita: "Far too early after all those late nights you're putting me through. Well?" Morry: "How old are you?" Rita: "None of your business." Morry: "Well, I suppose you won't look so old when you're on the stage." Rita: "I don't look so old when I've had a decent night's sleep. What are you doing?" Morry: "Making sure you're suitable. Nice figure." Rita: "Not hard when you can't afford to eat." Morry: "I'm very tempted, Alec." Alec: "She won't disappoint, Morry. Very talented is Rita." Morry: "I'll take your word for that, Alec. Okay, love. Let's see the merchandise." Rita: "Sorry?" Morry: "What you have." Rita: "What are you talking about?" Morry: "Get your clothes off, love." Rita: "Yer what?!" Morry: "I can't judge unless I see for myself." Rita: "This is a strip club?" Morry: "Of course, my dear. What did you think you were here for?" Rita: "I might have flaming known. You're a right devious weasel, Gilroy." Alec: "If you're earning more, what's the difference?" Rita: "I'll tell you what the difference is. This."
She hit him so hard he fell over.
Rita: "I'm not a stripper! I was right about you all along. Any excuse to see what's underneath. Well, you can forget that, Gilroy. You're sacked! And you can't say you weren't warned last night. Keep out of my sight in future if you love your teeth."
She stormed out, leaving Alec gobsmacked. Morry helped him up.
Morry: "Never mind, Alec. I'd never have hired her. She's far too old and I have my reputation to think about." Alec: "It was worth a try. I'll do anything to keep her on my books." Morry: "I don't blame you. So, have you...?" Alec: "Not yet." Morry: "Playing hard to get, eh?" Alec: "Much too hard." Morry: "You know, all you have to do is get her something she'll love so much, she'll be so grateful she'll do anything to show her appreciation." Alec: "Don't think I haven't been trying. Trouble with Miss Rita Littlewood is she's too bloody picky." Morry: "I have every faith in you, Alec. Keep trying, and you'll be in there." Alec: "Why do you think I keep turning down offers from other agents? She'll not leave me so easily. She loves me really." Morry: "I could see that." Alec: "You know what I mean. I have many ladies on my books, but Rita's something special." Morry: "You'd best get after her, then." Alec: "No. I'll let her calm down first. I know how to treat her after all these years." Morry: "But she's sacked you." Alec: "She can't sack me. She has a contract." Morry: "So?" Alec: "So, she knows if she breaks it, I'll sue her. She can't afford that." Morry: "Is that because you take a good percentage of her wages?" Alec: "Of course. I'll talk to her later and remind her of the situation. She'll have to come round. Got no choice." Morry: "Well, not unless she wants to pay you another way, eh, Alec?" Alec: "Now that's an idea. Thanks, Morry. See yer." Morry: "Good luck, Alec. With everything." Alec: "Rita'll be the lucky one if she playes her cards right."
He winked then left.

Part 2
Later that afternoon, Rita was alone in her dingy flat starving. She looked in the cupboard to see what she had and was disappointed to see a tin of beans and half a loaf. She opened the packaging, sniffed the bread and threw it in the bin. She hated Alec Gilroy for taking most of her money. She closed the cupboard, not fancying beans at all. She returned to the living room, sat and had a cigarette to take the hunger pangs away. There was a knock at the door and she was tempted to ignore it, but decided not to in case it was the landlord wanting his overdue rent paying in kind. She was proud she'd never stooped so low, but wise enough to realise if things carried on the way they were, she'd have no choice. She opened the door to see Alec carrying a bunch of roses and a bag, with that irritating grin on his face.
Rita: "Don't like your teeth much, I take it." Alec: "I wanted to apologise, Rita." Rita: "Did you(?) Seems you do a lot of that when I won't do what you want me to." Alec: "I should've told you." Rita: "Damn right you should." Alec: "You were in such a foul mood, it slipped my mind." Rita: "Rubbish. You're sacked, remember?" Alec: "And you have a contract. You want to break that, I'll expect compensation." Rita: "You can stuff that. You're not getting another penny off me." Alec: "Can't we talk about it?" Rita: "There's nothing to say that hasn't been already." Alec: "Please, Rita. I got these for you." Rita: "Paid for with my commission, no doubt." Alec: "Rita, please."
He held the flowers out. She grabbed them and hit him over the head with them. He cried out. Rita spotted blood trickling down his face.
Rita: "Oh, Alec. I'm so sorry." Alec: "My fault again. I should've warned you about the thorns." Rita: "You'd better come in and clean that up." Alec: "I wouldn't want to be where I'm not wanted." Rita: "Since when's that ever stopped you? Get in before you bleed to death." Alec: "Thanks. Here." Rita: "What's that?" Alec: "I thought you might be hungry so I got fish and chips on the way." Rita: "Bribery again?" Alec: "No. Trying to be considerate." Rita: "Sorry, Alec. I don't believe in miracles." Alec: "Do you want to eat, or not?" Rita: "Put like that, what do you think?" Alec: "Right. You sort that out, while I sort out my head." Rita: "Want a plate?" Alec: "Got any?" Rita: "No." Alec: "Don't think I'll bother then."
A while later they'd finished their food and were sat opposite each other smoking.
Alec: "You're going to have to learn to control that temper of yours, Rita." Rita: "I do, except when you do things to make me lose it." Alec: "No other agent will put up with a temperamental artiste, you know." Rita: "No other agent will drive me up the wall." Alec: "Want to bet? You'll behave the same even if they aren't getting you what you want." Rita: (sighs) "I suppose so. You know what I can do, Alec. It's so frustrating when you don't get me singing dates." Alec: "Have you any idea of the competition out there?" Rita: "Course I have." Alec: "I am working on it. You're also a very talented dancer. You want to eat." Rita: "And pay my rent. Which I can't on the peanuts I get after you've taken your share." Alec: "All right, Rita. How about if I reduce my commission?" Rita: "To what? Forty-five percent?" Alec: "I don't take anywhere near that much." Rita: "Feels like it." Alec: "Look, as a favour, how about seven?" Rita: "If you want to help me so badly, how about none?" Alec: "I've got bills to pay too, you know. Five?" Rita: "Done." Alec: "I have been." Rita: "Ah, never mind, Alec. I'm sure you'll make it up somewhere." Alec: "The way you talk, anyone'd think I was obsessed with money." Rita: "I've seen nowt to prove otherwise. But food and bills aren't the only problem, Alec." Alec: "If I can help, I'd be more than happy to." Rita: "I doubt that." Alec: "Just tell me what it is." Rita: "Clothes." Alec: "Eh?" Rita: "You heard." Alec: "Now, see here. If you're expecting me to stump up so you can buy new jumpers, you can forget that." Rita: "Not those sort of clothes. But my wardrobe's pretty threadbare an' all. No. To wear on stage." Alec: "There's nothing wrong with them." Rita: "Alec, they're falling apart and far more suited to that strip club since they'd just drop off. If you're ever going to get me a singing date, I need something decent to wear. Have a look if you don't believe me. I'm thinking of using them for rags." Alec: "You can't use class products like that to clean with!" Rita: "No, you're right. The sequins will probably cause scratch marks." Alec: "All right, Rita. I'll splash out. We'll go tomorrow." Rita: "Are you feeling all right?" Alec: "Never better." Rita: "It's not like you to be so generous. Where's the catch?" Alec: "There isn't one." Rita: "Why don't I believe you?" Alec: "Can't you trust me for once?" Rita: "You've never given me cause." Alec: "Look, Rita. It's perfectly simple. You're the best act I have, and I don't want to lose you." Rita: "Oh, that's right. Can't do without your meal-ticket." Alec: "It's not like that, and you know it." Rita: "All I know is you're not treating me like the best. If anything, more like fifth-rate." Alec: "Never!" Rita: "Looks that way from where I'm sitting." Alec: "Rita, with my guidance, I guarantee you will become the star you should be." Rita: "A fallen one." Alec: "Certainly not. To prove it to you, I'll get onto a few people I know and see if they'll take you on." Rita: "As what? Alec, I'm not taking my clothes off for you or anybody." Alec: "A singer, naturally. I know better than to ask you to strip again." Rita: "But you DIDN'T ask. You presumed I'd do owt for an extra couple of quid." Alec: "Okay, so I made a mistake. Haven't you?" Rita: "Oh, yes. Believing your lies, and letting you manage me. How's that for starters?" Alec: "Rita, my little songbird. If singing is what you want, that's what you'll get." Rita: "So you keep saying." Alec: "Doesn't pay as much as stripping, though." Rita: "I don't care. I'm not having anyone get their cheap thrills by watching me undress. Is that clear?" Alec: "You've made your point." Rita: "Several times, if your scabs are owt to go by." Alec: "Did you have to remind me?" Rita: "Obviously I do." Alec: "I must warn you, you might have to travel if you want the work." Rita: "Alec, I'll go to another planet if I have to. I'm getting too old to be an exotic dancer. I want to sing." Alec: "Then leave it with me. I'll get spots for you. You'll be a star." Rita: "You'd better, or you'll be seeing them before your eyes." Alec: "Now, Rita. Remember what I said about your temper." Rita: "If you don't deliver, you'll feel the full force of it." Alec: "You mean, I haven't?" Rita: "Not yet, no. But I guarantee you will." Alec: "I'll get onto it right now." Rita: "About time." Alec: "It may take a while." Rita: "It better not, or you can kiss goodbye to your best act." Alec: "I only want to make you happy, Rita." Rita: "Then prove it and get me what I want." Alec: "I will. For a start, I'll tell them you won't be going in tonight." Rita: "Oh, aye?" Alec: "You don't want to. You've made that clear." Rita: "Oh, so you'll be paying me while I'm resting. Is that it?" Alec: "I hadn't thought of that." Rita: "Didn't think you had. Look, I'll keep going in until you get me something else." Alec: "Thank you, Rita." Rita: "BUT, you told me it was for one more week. And one more week is all it will be." Alec: "You have my word." Rita: "Which is meaningless. So, if you haven't got me something better lined up by the end of the date, we're finished. Understood?" Alec: "Rita, I-" Rita: "Understood?" Alec: "Do I have a lot of choice?" Rita: "Course you do. You can either choose to keep me happy so I stay, or drive me to find someone better. It's up to you." Alec: "Okay, Rita. You win. Don't you always?" Rita: "If I did, Alec, I'd be a rich woman and wouldn't need you anymore. In fact, I wouldn't even be doing THIS anymore." Alec: "Leave it with me." Rita: "Unfortunately, I usually do. Just don't disappoint me again." Alec: "I won't. I'll get on with it now." Rita: "You'd better." Alec: "I'll let myself out." Rita: "Don't trust me not to clonk you one?" Alec: "No." Rita: "Very wise. See yer, Alec." Alec: "Bye, Rita."

Part 3
Rita continued at the Orinocco for the next few days. Alec had got her a gig in Blackburn, which made her happy. It was her last night at the club and she was nearing the end of her act when a drunk leapt on the stage and started to maul her.
Rita: "Get off!" Drunk: "Come on, sweetheart. No need to be shy." Rita: "You'll find out how shy I am if you don't get your grubby paws off me."
She struggled with the man and heard her dress tear. He wrapped his arms tightly around her and breathed alcohol in her face.
Drunk: "What are you doing afterwards?" Rita: "Not going anywhere near you, pal." Drunk: "I can show you a good time." Rita: "You wouldn't know how."
She felt him being pulled off, and was relieved to see Alec had finally come to her rescue.
Alec: "Go to the dressing room." Rita: "Cheers, Alec."
She started to go, turned, kneed the drunk where it hurt, which got a huge round of applause from the women, while the men cringed in sympathetic agony, and walked off. When she got in the dressing room she examined the damage. Alec entered soon afterwards.
Rita: "Hey! I might have been starkers." Alec: "I should be so lucky. Are you okay?" Rita: "Apart from the scratches where he ripped me frock, never better. What do you think?" Alec: "I'm sorry." Rita: "He was like a flaming boa constrictor. And his breath!" Alec: "There's always one." Rita: "Where were you?" Alec: "I thought you could handle it." Rita: "So did I, until he started breaking my ribs." Alec: "I came as soon as I realised what could happen. Come here."
He comforted her, and tried not to let her know how much he enjoyed having her body pressed against his.
Alec: "You're shaking." Rita: "Am I?" Alec: "Yes. Well, it's no wonder after what happened." Rita: "No. You know me, Alec. I can handle meself. But he really put the wind up me." Alec: "Well, he's not going to come anywhere near now." Rita: "Good. Thanks, Alec." Alec: "What for?" Rita: "Being here. It seems I may have misjudged you." Alec: "You always did."
She kissed him and he couldn't believe his luck.
Alec: "What was that for?" Rita: "I think you know. Shall we go back to mine after?" Alec: "Are you sure?" Rita: "Quite sure." Alec: "Oh, Rita."
They kissed again.
Rita: "Give us a few minutes to get out of this lot." Alec: "Okay. I'll wait outside." Rita: "Thanks. Oh, I'd love a brandy." Alec: "Dutch courage?" Rita: "Nowt of the sort. Steady me nerves." Alec: "I'll see to it." Rita: "Cheers. I'll try not to keep you waiting too long." Alec: "I'm sure it'll be worth it, no matter how long it takes." Rita: "Flatterer."
He kissed her again then left her to it, completely over the moon. Rita meanwhile sat and had a cigarette, wishing her hands would stop shaking. About five minutes later, there was a knock at the door.
Rita: "Come in. Oh, hello, Glenda." Glenda: "Hiya, Reet. Here's the brandy you asked for." Rita: "Great." Glenda: "I must say, you put on quite a show tonight." Rita: "Sorry?" Glenda: "That fella. People really believed he was a dirty lech. It was very convincing." Rita: "What do you mean, Glen?" Glenda: "Well, even I didn't know until I just saw Alec paying him he was part of the performance." Rita: "Hang on a minute. Alec did what?" Glenda: "Paid him." Rita: "Where did you see this?" Glenda: "Out back. I went to ask him something before coming in here, and saw him hand over money and slap him on the back." Rita: "I see. The little rat." Glenda: "Are you okay, Rita?" Rita: "Fine. Alec won't be by the time I've finished with him, mind." Glenda: "Oh, dear. Have I said something I shouldn't?" Rita: "Not at all. Glad you enjoyed it. I am paid to entertain after all." Glenda: "We'll all miss you." Rita: "I'll miss you lot an' all. Not this dump, though." Glenda: "I agree with you there. Or the pay." Rita: "Definitely not that." Glenda: "I'd best get back. Good luck, Reet." Rita: "Cheers, Glen. Hope you break out soon too."
Rita watched her go and hit the wall in frustration. She downed the drink in one then changed, planning how she'd teach Alec a lesson he'd hopefully never forget. And furious with herself for falling for one of the oldest tricks in the book. After deliberately keeping him waiting longer than originally intended, Rita joined him about half an hour later. He kissed her tenderly while she smiled sweetly, trying her best not to kill him.
Alec: "You were a long time." Rita: "Worth it, in't it?" Alec: "I'll say. You always look lovely, Rita." Rita: "Not without a bit of an effort these days." Alec: "Nonsense. You'll still look as beautiful when you're seventy." Rita: "Now I know you're talking rubbish. You won't fancy me when I'm drawing me pension." Alec: "I'll always fancy you, Rita." Rita: "Yeah, well. Like as not we'll both be dead by then, so it won't matter." Alec: "You never know when your number's up." Rita: "You do when it is." Alec: "Aye." Rita: "Well? Are we going to stand here all night?" Alec: "I didn't want to seem too eager." Rita: "Why not? It's what you've always wanted." Alec: "No, it isn't." Rita: "Oh, come on, Alec. I've seen the way you lust after me." Alec: "It's not that obvious, is it?" Rita: "Only when you're dribbling. Are we going, or what?" Alec: "Car's this way."
They drove to Rita's in silence. Alec was suddenly very nervous. He was finally about to get what he'd dreamed of ever since he first saw her, and was afraid he'd disappoint her. Rita's thoughts however, were still on getting her own back on him for the stunt he pulled. Alec pulled up outside and turned the engine off.
Alec: "Are you sure about this, Rita?" Rita: "You asked me that in that slum they call a dressing room." Alec: "I wouldn't want you to do anything you don't want to." Rita: "Don't you worry about that, Gilroy. I fully intend to do what I want. In fact, I'm really looking forward to it." Alec: "Are you?" Rita: "More than you'll ever know."
She smiled coyly, kissed his cheek, got out and went inside. Alec hurried after her like a dog on heat, which was exactly what Rita wanted. He caught up with her pretty quickly. She put the key in the lock, opened the door and went in. Once Alec was in, she closed it and kissed him passionately. As he was enjoying it, she glanced at her watch.
Alec: "Wow, Rita!" Rita: "What?" Alec: "I never knew you could kiss like that." Rita: "Only because I never gave you the chance to find out what I'm capable of before." Alec: "You won't regret it, you know." Rita: "Oh, I'm sure I won't. Do you want a drink?" Alec: "Do you?" Rita: "Not particularly. The sooner we get on with it, the better." Alec: "I couldn't agree more."
She kissed him passionately again.
Rita: "Why don't you go into the bedroom and wait for me?" Alec: "Aren't you coming?" Rita: "Course I am. I just want to make myself beautiful for you." Alec: "You're already that." Rita: "More beautiful, then. Although we both know you can't improve on perfection." Alec: "How very true."
She kissed him again, took his hand and led him to the bedroom. Alec loosened his collar, sweating nervously.
Rita: "I'll try not to take too long." Alec: "I hope not." Rita: "Calm down. You've waited this long. A bit longer won't make that much difference, will it?" Alec: "I suppose not." Rita: "Warm up the bed. See you in a bit." Alec: "Okay." Rita: "And relax. You'll not be much use if you're all tensed up." Alec: "I'll do my best." Rita: "You do that."
She kissed him again, winked, grabbed her dressing gown and left. Alec fumbled with his shirt buttons, cursing them for not coming undone. He decided to just rip it off instead then removed the rest of his clothes and climbed into the bed. He remembered he'd left his socks on as usual and pulled then off, reasoning if Rita took one look at his toe sticking out, it would put her right off. He plumped the pillow as he anxiously waited and spotted a couple of red hairs on it. He picked them off and dropped them on the floor. He wiped his brow with his hand, hoping Rita wouldn't be much longer. Eventually he saw the door open and Rita came back in.
Alec: "You're still dressed!" Rita: "Course I am." Alec: "I thought you and me were-" Rita: "You've got to be joking! Do you really think I'm that desperate, or stupid?" Alec: "What was all that in aid of, then? You lured me here under false pretences." Rita: "You were more than willing to come."
She went round the room gathering his clothes.
Alec: "What are you doing?" Rita: "I hate a mess. You want them, you get them."
She opened the window and threw them out.
Alec: "Rita!" Rita: "You know where they are if you want them." Alec: "You're a wicked woman, Rita." Rita: "And you're a devious, two-faced, lying rat, Gilroy. I know which I'd rather be."
He slid out of bed, clutching the sheet tightly to cover his dignity.
Alec: "You don't honestly expect me to go out there like this, do you?" Rita: "Oh, no, Alec. Not like that. This is so much better."
She whipped the sheet off him and bundled it in her arms. He quickly moved his hands down. Rita looked at him, not knowing whether to laugh or scream.
Alec: "Why are you doing this?" Rita: "Why did you pay someone to put the fear of God into me?" Alec: "I don't know what you're talking about." Rita: "Tonight's little stunt on stage." Alec: "Ah." Rita: "Ah." Alec: "How did you find out?" Rita: "Never mind all that. The fact is, I did. You've pulled some strokes in all the years I've had the misfortune to know you, Gilroy. But this is the worst." Alec: "I can explain." Rita: "I bet you can. More lies you expect me to fall for. All right, girls. You can come in now." Alec: "Girls?" Rita: "Aye. My mates from the Orinocco. I arranged it all while you were waiting. Just think, Gilroy. You'll be a talking point among your artistes for years. Well done on finally giving US some entertainment"
Alec looked at all the women in the room and could've died.
Alec: "I'll get you for this, Rita." Rita: "I wouldn't try it unless you're a masochist, Gilroy. Pleasant dreams, and do drive carefully."
He looked at them all again in hysterics and was totally humiliated. He slowly made his way past them and dashed out the door. Rita followed laughing as she watched him run, then return to her friends to celebrate getting one over on their much-despised agent.

Part 4
The following afternoon, Alec returned to collect Rita to drive her to Blackburn. He hesitated outside before knocking, wondering what sort of reception he would receive after the previous night's events. The door opened and Alec hoped he didn't look too embarrassed.
Rita: "Oh, it's you." Alec: "Afternoon, Rita. Ready?" Rita: "For what?" Alec: "Blackburn." Rita: "Oh! I'd forgotten all about that. Had a few other things to think about. Suppose you'd better come in while I pack." Alec: "Are you sure it's not too much trouble(?)" Rita: "Shut up and come in. Unless you want to wait in the car." Alec: "Is it any warmer in there?" Rita: "Depends on how thick your combs are." Alec: "Will you take long packing?" Rita: "Shouldn't think so. Not got a lot to take, have I?" Alec: "I'll wait in the car, then." Rita: "Please yourself."
She shut the door before he could say anything else and got her things together while he returned to his car. The journey was in silence, which irritated Rita.
Rita: "I've had enough of this." Alec: "What?" Rita: "You know what. I know you're dying to bring up last night. So why don't you just get on with it, and put us both out of our misery?" Alec: "You took me for a perfect idiot, Rita." Rita: "Nobody's perfect." Alec: "Not funny." Rita: "Oh, stop being so flaming miserable, Gilroy. You brought that on yourself." Alec: "Perhaps I did. But that didn't give you the right to humiliate me. And especially inviting an audience." Rita: "You needed teaching a lesson. It wouldn't have been anywhere near as effective without an audience." Alec: "I'll never live it down. You do know that?" Rita: "They'll all forget. Surprising as it may seem, Alec, their world doesn't revolve around you." Alec: "Unlike yours." Rita: "Only for as long as I decide to stop putting up with you." Alec: "You haven't left me yet." Rita: "Ah, but you know how close I've come to it on more than a dozen occasions. So, are you going to keep this up? Or will that be an end to it?" Alec: "What do you mean?" Rita: "Trying to have your evil way with me." Alec: "All right, Rita. You win." Rita: "I usually do. So, you'll give up?" Alec: "Got no choice really, have I?" Rita: "Oh, you have. Keep your paws off, you live. Try anything, you die. Perfectly simple." Alec: "I'll back off." Rita: "Good." Alec: "You know you want me really. You just won't admit it to yourself." Rita: "In your dreams, Gilroy." Alec: "Are you sure you'll even let me have those?" Rita: "Probably not." Alec: "So, we're friends again?" Rita: "Why not?" Alec: "I really am sorry about pulling that stroke, you know." Rita: "Would you be if you hadn't been found out?" Alec: "Course not." Rita: "Thought not. Does that radio work?" Alec: "Yes." Rita: "Let's have it on, then."
The rest of the journey was more pleasant than it had been now they'd cleared the air. But when Alec pulled up outside the place he'd booked them in, Rita's face fell as soon as she saw it.
Rita: "Is that it?" Alec: "Aye." Rita: "Don't they have a better class of dump round here, then?" Alec: "It was the only place that had any vacancies." Rita: "You mean, it was the cheapest which had any vacancies." Alec: "All right. So it's inexpensive." Rita: "Probably full of rats." Alec: "Don't be daft, Rita." Rita: "Have you been in?" Alec: "No." Rita: "How do you know, then?" Alec: "When are you going to start trusting me, Rita?" Rita: "When the Lakes turn into a desert." Alec: "As soon as that, eh?" Rita: (sighs) "Well, I suppose I might as well have a look at the room before I decide whether to throttle you or not." Alec: "It'll be fine." Rita: "Course it will. Come on, then. Let's get checked in. Just got time for a short sleep before I go on tonight." Alec: "You're not going to sleep?" Rita: "I am, you know. I had a very late night last night if you remember? And was rudely awakened at the crack of two by you." Alec: "You were already dressed when I arrived." Rita: "Dozed in the chair. It is allowed, I take it. Or can't I do owt that's not in my contract." Alec: "Course you can, Rita. As you'd have found out last night given half the chance." Rita: "Hey!" Alec: "Can't you take a joke?" Rita: "I told you already. I'm not desperate." Alec: "Ha, ha(!)"
Rita smiled and got out, waiting for him to join her with the bags. They checked in and were shown upstairs. Apart from being worse than she'd imagined with its damp mouldy walls and peeling flock wallpaper, she was taken aback by the double bed.
Rita: "Excuse me. I think there's been some sort of mistake. We're meant to have a twin." Owner: "All twins have double beds. I told your husband when he rang." Rita: "Did you now(?) I might have known." Alec: "There's no need to look at me like that, Rita." Rita: "Oh, there isn't(?) You lied to me. You're an even bigger weasel than I gave you credit for. Got any singles?" Owner: "No." Alec: "Well?" Rita: "You won't be in a minute, Gilroy." Owner: "I'll leave you both to it." (leaves) Rita: "Obviously can't stand the sight of blood." Alec: "It slipped my mind." Rita: "I bet it did(!) Right, I suppose you'll have to sleep in here until a single room becomes available." Alec: "I knew you'd see sense." Rita: "But on the floor." Alec: "The floor?! Have you heard it squelching under our feet?" Rita: "Floor or car, Gilroy. It's up to you. After all, you did book us in here." Alec: "If I get rheumatism, I know who to blame." Rita: "Yourself. Oh, and if you try owt, you'll be singing soprano. Clear?" Alec: "Clear." Rita: (sighs) "Well, looks like the kip's out then. Bad enough sleeping in the same room as you when you're snoring. I certainly don't trust you when you're wide awake. I hope this club's better than this. What am I saying? Anything'll be better than this." Alec: "It's a little palace." Rita: "Or a den of iniquity." Alec: "It isn't. It's got a good class of customer." Rita: "What? One who asks permission before groping you?" Alec: "Why can't you ever think positive?" Rita: "Years of being my agent has made me always think the worst if you're involved. So, what are we going to do to pass the time until tonight?" Alec: "Well..." Rita: "Alec..." Alec: "I was going to suggest you borrow one of my books." Rita: "I didn't know you could read. I do hope it's not 'Janet and John'." Alec: "Do you want one, or not?" Rita: "If you mean a book, and I sincerely hope you do, no ta. Not into 'Playboy'." Alec: "Course I meant a book." Rita: "Answer's still the same. I think I'll go for a walk." Alec: "Don't get lost." Rita: "Wish you would. See you later."

Part 5
At the Blue Moon, Rita's singing went down a storm. She was so popular the owner, Ed Frazer, extended the booking. Alec negotiated more money which Ed was only too happy to pay as long as she brought the punters in. They moved out of the B&B, which made Rita delighted. She was sure she was starting to get rising damp. Alec offered to check and she hit him. They moved into another B&B and Rita made sure they had separate rooms on separate floors. During this time she became friendly with a barman called Colin Hines. Alec noticed how Rita was spending a lot of time with him and tried to fight his jealousy. However, one morning he got a call about a job and decided to wake her to tell her. He knocked and called but got no answer. He kept trying but there was only silence. He had an idea where she was and desperately hoped he was wrong. He sat at the top of the stairs and waited. Just before noon he heard footsteps approaching. He tensed, hoping it was her. Then she appeared still wearing the previous day's clothes. She stopped and sensed a row brewing.
Rita: "Morning, Alec." Alec: "Just about. No need to ask where you were last night." Rita: "Then don't bother." Alec: "You could've said something." Rita: "Since when did I need your permission?" Alec: "I went to wake you several hours ago." Rita: "Making sure I was where you reckon I should be? Oh, that's right. It's YOUR bed you think I should be in. Or you in mine." Alec: "I had a phone call." Rita: "Wrong number?" Alec: "It was about a booking for you." Rita: "How interesting." Alec: "It's at a big club in Manchester. All the stars go there." Rita: "So?" Alec: "And talent scouts. It could be your big break. There'll be more money." Rita: "How much more?" Alec: "Ten pounds a week." Rita: "As much as that?" Alec: "It's a class venue. They don't hire riff-raff, you know." Rita: "I'm happy here." Alec: "Rita!" Rita: "I like it here." Alec: "And a certain barman would have nothing to do with your turning down what you've always wanted?" Rita: "Nothing at all." Alec: "I see. What will you do when they don't renew your contract?" Rita: "I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. And don't even think of having quiet words with Ed neither." Alec: "Would I do that?" Rita: "Yes. You'd stoop to anything to get your own way." Alec: "I won't. You're making a big mistake, Rita." Rita: "Isn't that my decision?" Alec: "The possibility of fame and fortune." Rita: "More likely slogging my guts out and still getting nowhere." Alec: "How do you know unless you try?" Rita: "I just do." Alec: "You used to be a risk taker, Rita." Rita: "Yeah, well maybe I've just got realistic after all these years. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'd like to get changed." Alec: "Be my guest. Oh, before you go. I'll be away a couple of days." Rita: "Oh, yeah?" Alec: "Now, don't look like that. I do have other acts, if you remember." Rita: "I thought you didn't, since you spend all your time spying on me." Alec: "I've spent far too much time trying to please you." Rita: "I'll let you know if you manage to succeed. Don't hold your breath, though." Alec: "I'll be back at the weekend." Rita: "Great. Three whole days without your beady eyes burning holes in me." Alec: "I'm sure you'll find other company while I'm gone." Rita: "Couldn't stay away longer, could you? Like, for good?" Alec: "If I did, who would you have to argue with?" Rita: "I'm sure I could live without you at a push."
She barged past him, let herself into her room, flopped on the bed and lit a cigarette. The thought of no Alec pestering her for even a few days had cheered her up. It also meant she could spend more time with Colin rather than having to get back to the B&B hopefully before Alec woke up and gave her disapproving glances. She finished her cigarette, got changed, packed her toothbrush and went out. ------------------------------------ Colin: "Rita! What are you doing back so soon?" Rita: "Anyone'd think you didn't want to see me." Colin: "I'm always happy to see you. I expected it'd be at work." Rita: "I had some excellent news when I got back. Daddy's going to check up on his other acts until the weekend. So, no reason to rush back. Well, not till then anyroad." Colin: "I see. No point standing out there when you've got better things to do." Rita: "Couldn't have put it better myself. I've brought me toothbrush." Colin: "Who said you'll have time to brush your teeth?"
Saturday night arrived and Alec was back. He sat at the bar while Rita did her spot drinking his usual Irish whiskey. Colin could never concentrate on his work while she was on and stood mesmerised as usual. She winked at him and he smiled. Alec couldn't help noticing.
Alec: "Good, isn't she?" Colin: "Very. Best we've ever had in all the years I've worked here." Alec: "That's because she's pure class." Colin: "I know. She always manages to have the audience's complete attention. No talking or nowt. That's never happened before either." Alec: "She could be big." Colin: "I'm surprised she's not now." Alec: "Top London agents have been after her, you know?" Colin: "Really?" Alec: "Aye. She always turns them down." Colin: "Why?" Alec: "She refuses to leave me. We go back a very long way." Colin: "Yeah?" Alec: "I discovered her." Colin: "I didn't know that." Alec: "She didn't tell you that, then?" Colin: "We don't tend to talk about you. No offence." Alec: "None taken." Colin: "It is nice though." Alec: "What is?" Colin: "Rita being so loyal to you. Not a lot of that about these days, especially when money's involved." Alec: "Aye. Rita's loyal in more ways than one." Colin: "What do you mean?" Alec: "We're far more than client and agent, if you know what I mean." Colin: "You and Rita?" Alec: "Me and Rita." Colin: "She's not said anything to me." Alec: "She never does. She'll never leave me, but does get itchy feet. I allow her these little dalliances because I know they mean nothing to her." Colin: "She makes a habit of...?" Alec: "All the time. She can't help it. It's the way she is. One man is never enough for our Rita. It never lasts long. She gets bored then does everything she can to make it up to me." Colin: "Why do you put up with it? I wouldn't if she two-timed me." Alec: I love her. I don't want to be without her." Colin: "What about her? She can't love you, or think much of you to behave that way." Alec: "She does. She wouldn't stay if she didn't." Colin: "Doesn't it bother you?" Alec: "Not anymore. It used to hurt a hell of a lot. But I love her. As long as she doesn't throw her latest conquest in my face and stays with me, I'm happy if she is. I know she'll never divorce me."
Alec glanced out of the corner of his eye for Colin's reaction. He didn't disappoint and he allowed a little smile to himself.
Colin: "Divorce?" Alec: "Don't tell me she never mentioned she was married either." Colin: "No." Alec: "I'm not surprised. She rarely does." Colin: "I've never seen a ring." Alec: "She never wears one. Says it puts the fellas off when they spot her." Colin: "How long have you been married?" Alec: "Fifteen years. Got wed on her twentieth birthday." Colin: "I see. And she's always been like this?" Alec: "All the while I've known her. Caught a few things once or twice too." Colin: "Caught?" Alec: "Besides, no one else would put up with her, sick or well. That's love." Colin: "That's stupidity."
Rita finished singing and left the stage with the applause ringing in her ears. First thing she did on arriving in the dressing room was light a cigarette. She was surprised when Colin walked in.
Rita: "Hello, love."
She went to kiss him but he pushed her away.
Rita: "What's up?" Colin: "I don't want anything to do with lying tarts." Rita: "Sorry?" Colin: "Not as much as I am. I thought we had something special." Rita: "We do." Colin: "I don't like being used, Rita." Rita: "I've got no idea what you're on about." Colin: "Stop lying to me! We're finished." Rita: "Why?" Colin: "You know why, Mrs Gilroy." Rita: "Now I know you're crazy. Alec's my agent, that's all." Colin: "Still lying. He was right. You just can't help yourself. I suppose after all these years of lying and adultery, it's second nature to you." Rita: "I'm NOT lying! I'm not married to anyone!" Colin: "He's told me all about it. Ta-ra, Rita. It's not been nice knowing you." (leaves) Rita: "Colin! Colin! Alec Flaming Gilroy again!"
She felt like crying but was too furious. She chain smoked as she waited to do her second spot, working out how to get her own back yet again.
An hour later she was closing her act wandering around the tables singing, "Who's Taking You Home Tonight?" She couldn't help noticing Colin never looked at her and was doing anything to avoid her gaze. She slowly neared the bar where Alec was smiling. She stood beside him as she ended the song, picked up a pint and poured it over his head. He quickly got off the stool.
Alec: "What the hell was that for?" Rita: "Don't play the innocent with me, Gilroy." Alec: "What have I done?" Rita: "Schemed and lied again to ruin my life." Alec: "I only do my best for you." Rita: "Your best?! I dread to think what your worst would be, then." Alec: "You need saving from yourself at times." Rita: "I beg your pardon?" Alec: "You always make mistakes with me. You know Colin is wrong for you." Rita: "Is anyone right for me(?)" Alec: "Yes." Rita: "I suppose you're thinking of yourself again." Alec: "You know it makes sense. You've turned down the chance of being discovered because you went soppy over him." Rita: "So that's why you did it. I might have known." Alec: "You could have gone places, but wanted to throw it away for a whim." Rita: (slaps him) "You bastard!" Alec: "Rita-" Rita: "I'm sick of you interfering in my life! Do it once more and you'll regret it, Gilroy!" Alec: "In what way?" Rita: "The worst possible way."
With that, she returned to the dressing room, gathered her belongings and got a taxi to take her to the B&B.
The following morning, Alec swallowed his pride and made the first move. When he got no answer, he feared she'd made it up with Colin and was with him. He decided to ask the owner if he'd seen her and was stunned to learn she'd checked out the night before. He packed and returned to Weatherfield, heading straight for her flat. The landlord informed him he'd had a phone call from Rita saying she'd be gone a while longer. Alec was really starting to get worried, but knew there was nothing he could do until she turned up and hoped she'd get in touch.

Part 6
Christmas came and went and 1968 arrived. Alec was growing increasingly worried. He'd not seen or heard from Rita for over a month. She still hadn't returned to her flat. He decided to visit her friends again and try another tack. He was confident at least one of them would have been in touch with her. He went from one to the other always getting nowhere and sensed they'd been told not to tell him where she was. He knocked on Blanche Jameson's door. She and Rita had virtually started together and he knew they were very close. She was his last chance, but he didn't want her to know how desperate he was becoming.
Blanche: "Alec! This is a surprise." Alec: "Hello, Blanche." Blanche: "Come in." Alec: "Thanks." Blanche: "So, what do I owe this honour?" Alec: "I've come to see Rita." Blanche: "She's not here." Alec: "Isn't she? She told me she was staying with you over New Year." Blanche: "Sorry, Alec. I'm afraid I haven't seen Rita for months. I wasn't here for New Year. I got back from the Far East yesterday." Alec: "I must have made a mistake." Blanche: "Or Rita did. Would you like some tea?" Alec: "If it's not too much trouble." Blanche: "Course not."
While Blanche was busy in the kitchen, Alec covertly looked around searching for any clue which would tell him where Rita was. He spotted a Christmas card on the mantlepiece from her but it gave no other information. He quickly moved away when he heard her coming. She put the tray down, poured the tea and handed him a cup.
Blanche: "Help yourself to milk and sugar. Sit down. You look more tired than I feel." Alec: "I'm worried about Rita." Blanche: "Oh? Is she okay?" Alec: "That's just it. I don't know. She's disappeared." Blanche: "Had a row?" Alec: "The latest of many." Blanche: "Well, she's always been hot-headed. You know that, Alec." Alec: "I should, since I'm often on the receiving end." Blanche: "What did you do this time?" Alec: "Came between her and a fella." Blanche: "Oh, dear." Alec: "She was throwing away the chance to make it big because she'd rather be with him." Blanche: "She must've had it bad. It's been her dream as long as I've known her to be famous." Alec: "Me too. I do my best and she keeps throwing it in my face." Blanche: "She doesn't like being controlled." Alec: "She should be her own agent then. Let her do the donkey work, and get doors slammed in her face." Blanche: "She's obviously sulking. She does that. Once she's licked her wounds, she'll be back." Alec: "I hope you're right." Blanche: "I am. Just give her time." Alec: "I don't suppose you have any idea where she might be?" Blanche: "Afraid not. She hasn't even told me. I got a Christmas card as usual. She never even hinted owt were wrong." Alec: "Aye. Always keeps things bottled up, does our Rita." Blanche: "I know. It worries me she rarely discusses her problems. She'll end up a nut if she carries on like this." Alec: "What sort of nut?" Blanche: "Psychiatric case, you know?" Alec: "I'm sure it won't come to that." Blanche: "You never know." Alec: "Hey, you don't think...?" Blanche: "Nah. Not Rita's style." Alec: "Suppose you're right. Well, I'd best be going." Blanche: "So soon?" Alec: "I still have a few people to try." Blanche: "Okay. Well, nice seeing you again, Alec. And don't worry. She'll be perfectly fine and will turn up when she thinks you've been punished enough and is ready to face you." Alec: "I'll believe it when I see her." Blanche: "It's not as if it's the first time she's done this, is it?" Alec: "Oh, no. I'd forgotten she often vanishes when she can't get her own way. Thanks for the tea, Blanche. Take care. And if you hear anything-" Blanche: "I'll let you know. Bye, Alec." Alec: "Bye."
She saw him out, waited several minutes, picked up her purse, went to the phone in the hall and dialled, unaware Alec was hiding around the corner.
Blanche: "Hi, Reet. Guess who's just turned up on my doorstep?" Rita: <"The stinker?"> Blanche: "Top prize." Rita: <"And he wanted to know where I am, I suppose?"> Blanche: "I'm running out of prizes." Rita: <"I take it he's gone now, and is none the wiser?"> Blanche: "Would I tell him you're with your uncle Sam in Blackpool?" Rita: <"No."> Blanche: "Good." Rita: <"What did the weasel say?"> Blanche: "You fell out because he broke you and some bloke up." Rita: <"The truth at last? He must be frantic!"> Blanche: "He's worried about you, Rita." Rita: <"So he should be."> Blanche: "Is it right you wanted to stay with the bloke instead of getting discovered?" Rita: <"Yeah. Blew it big time, didn't I? I'll not get another chance like that."> Blanche: "Alec might wangle summat." Rita: <"They wouldn't touch me with a bargepole after I turned them down last time."> Blanche: "Alec would work it out. He's slimy enough." Rita: <"True."> Blanche: "Got to go. Run out of money. See you soon." Rita: <"Look forward to it. I'll just let Gilroy sweat a bit longer."> Blanche: "He deserves it. See yer, kid." Rita: <"And you.">
Blanche hung up completely oblivious to the fact Alec was already heading towards Blackpool

Part 7
In Blackpool, Rita lit a cigarette and sighed, rubbing her forehead. She knew it was only a matter of time before someone let it slip where she was. A man entered the room.
Sam: "Everything all right, our Rita?" Rita: "Oh, uncle Sam. You made me jump." Sam: "You looked miles away. Alec Gilroy again, I presume." Rita: "How did you guess?" Sam: "Only he ever gets you into such a state. Why don't you get yourself a proper agent, love? You know you can do much better than him." Rita: "Don't think I have't tried. But he always wins me round." Sam: "Rita, love. You can't keep running away all the time. You've got to stay and fight." Rita: "I know." Sam: "You've been coming here since you were a little girl. What'll you do when I'm no longer around?" Rita: "I don't want to think about that." Sam: "Well it's time you did. You'll lose your bolthole. Then what'll you do?" Rita: "People just make me so mad, I know if I stayed I'd do something I'd regret." Sam: "Rita. You know I always love having you here. But you're nearly thirty-six years old." Rita: "Don't remind me!" Sam: "What'd you do if you had a row with your husband?" Rita: "If I haven't got one by now, I'll never get one." Sam: "But supposing you did?" Rita: "I'll never get married, uncle Sam. Maybe I'm not the marrying kind." Sam: "Course you are. You've not met the right chap yet." Rita: "I don't think there is one. Not after all this time." Sam: "Like I said, you've not met him." Rita: "I'm getting old. Men only want me for a good time. Anything else and it's younger women." Sam: "Now I know you're talking daft." Rita: "Best this way anyway. Nowt too serious. Expecting kids comes into in then. And we both know I'm useless in that department." Sam: "Not your fault, love." Rita: "No. But you get all the emotional baggage. I can handle it better on me own. Well, all the while I'm this age. Once I hit the change I won't have to think about it." Sam: "No. But just imagine you DID get married." Rita: (sighs) You'll not give up, will you?" Sam: "I'm your uncle, so shut up and obey your elders." Rita: "Okay. I've got a husband. Now what?" Sam: "First time you can't get what you really want, guess whose doorstep you'll land up on?" Rita: "I know you're right." Sam: "Your mother spoiled you." Rita: "So did you." Sam: "Aye. And now you expect your own way all the time. You've got to try and learn to compromise." Rita: "Not easy." Sam: "Not after all these years, no. But you can start by staying put." Rita: "Anyone'd think you didn't want me here." Sam: "Of course I do, Rita, love. Just not so often, eh?" Rita: "You have a point, I suppose. I'm going for a walk. I need to think." Sam: "Wrap up warm. Don't want you catching your death." Rita: "Neither do I. I still have Gilroy to deal with." Sam: "Which you'll do with your usual tact and diplomacy." Rita: "Uncle Sam, you know me too well." Sam: "I should do, the amount of time you spend here." Rita: "Is it too late to adopt me?" Sam: "As I can't put you over my knee when you've been naughty, yes." Rita: "I'm never naughty! Well, not much. I'll see you later." Sam: "Bye, love."
Rita kissed her uncle on the cheek then left. It was freezing outside, and she wished she had enough money to buy a warmer coat. She wrapped her arms around herself and started to walk, hoping it would warm her up.
A couple of hours later when she returned she was taken aback to see Alec large as life sat in the front room. She didn't know whether to be glad he cared enough to track her down, or hit him for having the nerve to.
Alec: "Rita." Rita: "Alec." Sam: "Cuppa, love?" Rita: "Please. I'm frozen." Sam: "Sit yourself by the fire. Won't be a tick." Rita: "Okay."
She went past Alec, sat in the chair and rubbed her hands together.
Alec: "I'm sorry." Rita: "Again?" Alec: "Yes." Rita: "It's all I ever hear from you. Doesn't stop you though, does it?" Alec: "I'm only trying to do what's best for you, Rita." Rita: "How did you find me?" Alec: "I had a feeling Blanche would let you know I'd been." Rita: "So you earwigged." Alec: "I was getting really worried. What else was I supposed to do? I know you've run away before. But never for this long." Rita: "Maybe I can't stand the thought of being anywhere near you." Alec: "Look, I know I've upset you." Rita: "Then why keep doing it?" Alec: "Rita, you threw away your big chance for a man." Rita: "That had nothing to do with it. Even if that offer hadn't come up, you'd have still stuck your oar in. You can't stand me being with anyone else. Well, get used t it." Alec: "He was wrong for you." Rita: "So what? I had planned to enjoy it while it lasted. Only you had other ideas. You ALWAYS have other ideas when I get involved with a fella." Sam: "Here's your tea, love." Rita: "Cheers, uncle Sam." Sam: "I'll leave you to it." Rita: "You can stay." Sam: "It's a private converation. Besides, you know my thoughts. Best you sort it out between you." Rita: "It's all we ever seem to do these days. Maybe we should go our separate ways once and for all." Sam: "That's up to you. I'm sure whatever you decide, it will be because it's what you want to do. I'll be back for tea." Rita: "Fine."
She watched him go and sipped her tea, wishing it was Alec who left.
Alec: "Did you mean that?" Rita: "What?" Alec: "About going our separate ways?" Rita: "It might be better. We're always falling out these days. That's down to you." Alec: "I care about what happens to you, Rita." Rita: "Is that why you keep interfering and getting me work in dumps?" Alec: "You've got to take what you can get, Rita. Perhaps if you weren't so choosy, you'd be happier." Rita: "You could be right. After all, I chose you to be my agent, and have been miserable ever since." Alec: "You've not done that bad all these years." Rita: "No? So how is it I only eat properly when I come here?" Alec: "I thought you women were always watching your figure?" Rita: "What figure? It disappeared so long ago, I'd forgotten what it looked like." Alec: "It's not that bad." Rita: "Not for you. But then, you sit back and count your commissions. You should try being this side." Alec: "If you'd agreed to the Manchester job, you'd have been better off." Rita: "So you say." Alec: "Well, we'll never know now." Rita: "No." Alec: "Are you coming back?" Rita: "Haven't decided yet." Alec: "Please, Rita." Rita: "Oh, that's right. I'm not earning for you while I'm not working, am I?" Alec: "That's not why I asked." Rita: "Course not(!)" Alec: "What ARE you going to do?" Rita: "Don't know. Maybe retire and get a job in a chippy." Alec: "You wouldn't be able to stand stinking of chip fat every day." Rita: "Probably not." (sighs) "All right. I'll come back." Alec: "You won't regret it, Rita. I promise." Rita: "On a trial basis." Alec: "Eh?" Rita: "This is your last chance, Gilroy. You get me seedy jobs, or stick your fat nose in my life again, not only is that it, but I'll start putting it about you're a pervert." Alec: "You wouldn't." Rita: "I would. I'll enjoy it too." Alec: "I bet you would. Okay, Rita." Rita: "You agree?" Alec: "Do I have a choice?" Rita: "Yes. The same ones I always give you when you hack me off." Alec: "As I don't like either, I'd rather try and make peace with you and get you work." Rita: "GOOD work. SINGING work." Alec: "I will." Rita: "Right. I'll stay here until you've got me something. Hadn't you better get started?" Alec: "I-" Rita: "You can see yourself out. Bye, Alec."
He was about to object, but she averted her gaze to the fire.
Alec: "How will I contact you?" Rita: "Number's on the phone. Write it down on your way out." Alec: "You look after yourself." Rita: "I intend to." Alec: "And I'll be in touch as soon as I've got you a booking." Rita: "Good. Still here?" Alec: "I'm going!" Rita: "About time."
He got to his feet and left. Rita sat back, knowing she'd end up regretting her decision as usual.
Over the next few months, Alec got her booking after booking and she gained a couple of nightly spots at the Gatsby in Weatherfield. One night as she was ending her act, she couldn't help noticing a man in the audience couldn't take his eyes off her. When she finished, she went to the bar. The man followed.
Rita: "Vodka and lime, love." Man: "I'll get that." Rita: "Thanks. Not seen you here before." Man: "Never been before. A group of us from work decided to come here." Rita: "Did that include you?" Man: "Not really. I'd have preferred the pub." Rita: "I'm sorry you didn't enjoy yourself. Well, I take it you didn't." Man: "Not till you came on." Rita: "I'm flattered." Man: "I hope so. What are you doing tomorrow?" Rita: "Bit forward, aren't you?" Man: "Never get anywhere in this life otherwise." Rita: "When tomorrow? Only I'm working here as usual at night." Man: "Afternoon?" Rita: "Nowt as far as I know." Man: "Fancy coming out with me?" Rita: "What time?" Man: "About one?" Rita: "I should be up and awake by then. Okay. Why not?" Man: "You know, I don't even know your name." Rita: "Rita. Rita Littlewood." Man: "I'm very pleased to meet you, Rita. I'm Harry Bates."

Part 8
Weatherfield 1968. Rita Littlewood had been seeing construction worker Harry Bates for three weeks, much to the disapproval of her agent Alec Gilroy. He sensed something was not quite right about him. He was too much the perfect gentleman for his liking and he could see Rita heading for another fall. He was in a terrible dilemma. He'd sworn never to interfere in her life again but couldn't just stand by and see her get hurt. He decided before Rita knocked his block off for trying to help, he'd try and find out as much as he could about Mr Bates then risk Rita's wrath. Meanwhile at Rita's, it was time to get ready before going to the Gatsby. She got out of bed, put on her dressing gown and went to the bathroom to run herself a hot bath. She felt arms around her waist and smiled.
Rita: "Thought you were still asleep." Harry: "Can't sleep when you're not with me."
She turned round and kissed him.
Rita: "That's sweet." Harry: "It's true. I sleep much better when I've got you to cuddle up to." Rita: "Ever thought about getting a teddy?" Harry: "Who needs one of them when I've got you?" Rita: "You say the sweetest things. I could always phone in sick. Neither of us would have to rush then." Harry: "A very tempting thought, Rita, but I-" Rita: "Have to go home, I know." Harry: "I could stay long enough to scrub your back." Rita: "You're all right."
She moved away and turned the taps off. His eyes moved down and he would give anything to stay with her.
Rita: "I'm just going to have a quick dip then get off to work. Shouldn't you be getting dressed, since you have to go?" Harry: "Yeah. I'm sorry." Rita: "So am I." Harry: "It's not what you think." Rita: "I hope not." Harry: "I do love you, Rita. I'd stay if I could." Rita: "I suppose." Harry: "Maybe another time?" Rita: "Maybe. You can see yourself out, can't you?" Harry: "Yeah. See you tomorrow?" Rita: "I don't know. Depends how tired I am." Harry: "I understand. I can give you a lift." Rita: "Alec's picking me up." Harry: "Okay. See you then." Rita: "Yeah."
He kissed her. She sat on the side of the bath thinking before closing the door and getting into the hot, soapy water, tears rolling down her cheeks. She heard the front door close and let out loud, uncontrollable sobs. Outside, Harry stopped, backtracked and pressed his ear to the door. He felt terrible for lying to her and decided to have a long, hard think. He didn't want to lose her, but knew if things continued like this, he would. He slowly made his way back to the car and drove home.
Less than half an hour later, Rita was running late. She'd spent far too long in the bath breaking her heart over another man. She had one shoe on and was searching frantically for the other, her dress half hanging off, not having the time to zip it up properly. There was a knock at the door. She swore and hobbled to answer it.
Rita: "Harry! What are you doing here? I thought you'd gone." Harry: "I thought you had." Rita: "Lost me other shoe." Harry: "Are they the ones you were wearing last night?" Rita: "Yes. They go with the outfit." Harry: "Have you tried by the window?" Rita: "What would it be doing there?" Harry: "Things fly far when you kick them off." Rita: "I'll have a look. You'd better come in."
She hobbled towards the window, moved things around and found it on the ledge. She slipped it on.
Rita: "Flaming lucky it didn't go through. Where's me earrings?" Harry: "Rita." Rita: "What?" Harry: "Why don't you call in sick?" Rita: "No point, if you remember? I wanted to spend tonight with you, only you had other plans." Harry: "Do it." Rita: "Why the change?" Harry: "We need to talk." Rita: "Am I going to like what I hear?" Harry: "I don't know. But I need to explain." Rita: "Why now?" Harry: "I love you. I don't want to hurt you." Rita: "Well you are." Harry: "I know. That's because I've not been entirely honest with you about my situation at home." Rita: "Your wife, you mean?" Harry: "There is no wife. Look, are we going to talk? Or are you going to work?" Rita: "I'll not be able to concentrate. I'll ring Alec." Harry: "Hang on."
He zipped her up and kissed her shoulder. She said nothing as she picked up her purse and went to the phone. He paced anxiously, knowing what he was about to tell her would probably end their relationship. After a few minutes she returned. She closed the door, put her purse back in her handbag then sat back on the settee, legs crossed and lit a cigarette trying to be nonchalant.
Rita: "Well?" Harry: "What I have to say isn't easy, Rita." Rita: "Why don't you sit down?" Harry: "I think I'll stand." Rita: "Suit yourself. So?" Harry: "Fact is, Rita, I'm married." Rita: "Thought you said there wasn't a wife!" Harry: "There isn't. Well, not at home." Rita: "I don't understand this." Harry: "She walked out ages ago. No idea where she is." Rita: "You didn't get divorced?" Harry: "I can't until I know where she is." Rita: "Well, if there's no Mrs Bates, why can't you stay over? Unless you've got someone else."
He stopped pacing, looked at her then joined her, taking her hand. She had a strong compulsion to snatch it away but he looked so pitiful she left it where it was.
Harry: "There is someone at home, but it's not another woman." Rita: "Who then?" Harry: "My kids." Rita: "Kids?" Harry: "Terry and Gail. I work away so much I hardly see them. So I like to be with them as much as I can when I'm at home." Rita: "I see." Harry: "It's not that I wouldn't want to spend the night with you." Rita: "I understand. Your kids come first." Harry: "Yes." Rita: "And she walked out on them too?" Harry: "Never had any contact since she left." Rita: "What sort of mother could do that to her kids?" Harry: "I don't know. She loves them so much." Rita: "I'm sorry, Harry. Why didn't you say summat sooner?" Harry: "I was afraid to. Normally when I do, that's it. I didn't want us to go the same way." Rita: "And that's what you expect?" Harry: "Can't help it." Rita: "Do they know about me?" Harry: "They know I'm seeing someone." Rita: "Isn't it time we were introduced?" Harry: "You mean...?" Rita: "Harry, I love you. When you get to our age you can't realistically expect there to be no hurdles." Harry: "You're a wonderful woman, Rita." Rita: "So I keep being told." Harry: "I'm glad I reluctantly went to the Gatsby that night." Rita: "So am I." Harry: "I've, er... told the babysitter something's come up to do with work and I don't know when I'll be home." Rita: "Ahh. Shame you zipped me up really." Harry: "Just don't kick your shoes off again." Rita: "I won't. I'll need them for tomorrow." Harry: "Oh, what did you tell Alec?" Rita: "That I had a sore throat so my voice isn't up to it." Harry: "I know just the cure for that."
He kissed her and led her into the bedroom.
In the middle of the night, Harry got out of bed and fumbled for his clothes in the dark. Rita stirred and put the bedside light on.
Harry: "Did I wake you?" Rita: "Hmm. What time is it?" Harry: "Nearly three. I have to get back." Rita: "I know. Don't worry. I'm not going to cause a scene. I know your kids'll be expecting to see you at breakfast." Harry: "They will. You're a remarkable woman, Rita. I'm so lucky to have found you." Rita: "I know." Harry: "Modest with it, I see." Rita: "Of course! When will I get to meet them?" Harry: "We'll discuss that when I come round tonight. At least, I take it I'm still welcome." Rita: "You wouldn't be here now if you weren't." Harry: "I expect Alec will be round later to check up on your health." Rita: "Like the fussy old woman he is. He's only happy when I do what he wants and am earning his commission." Harry: "Has he ever tried it on with you?" Rita: "More times than I care to remember." Harry: "Have you...?" Rita: "Is that a sensible question?" Harry: "I did wonder." Rita: "Thought you credited me with more sense." Harry: "I do. I'll be back after the kids have had their tea." Rita: "I look forward to it." Harry: "So do I. I hate going but I have to." Rita: "You don't have to explain." Harry: "See you tonight." Rita: (smiles) "Tonight."
They kissed passionately then he left. Rita lay there for a while thinking. It would be a hell of a step for her to meet his children, but at least he showed he was serious about her. She propped herself up, lit a cigarette and inhaled deeply, wondering if this relationship might possibly lead to what she's always dreamed of; marriage. She knew she'd have none of her own but, provided they accepted her, had no qualms about looking after his kids. She finished her cigarette, stubbed it out, put the light off and slid back down the bed.

Part 9
Later that morning as Rita was having breakfast there was a knock at the door. She washed the toast down with a swig of tea, wiped the butter from her hand and mouth and went to answer it.
Rita: "Morning, Gilroy. Come in." Alec: "Thanks. How's the throat today?" Rita: "Much better. Tea?" Alec: "Lovely. Did you take anything for it?" Rita: "For what?" Alec: "The throat." Rita: "Oh, Yes, I did." Alec: "I hope you gargled well." Rita: "Er... no. I just swallowed. Here. Sit down. You don't mind if I finish me breakfast, do you?" Alec: "Be my guest."
He sat opposite her at the table and watched her bite into the toast. She noticed him staring at her and swallowed.
Rita: "What?" Alec: "Nowt." Rita: "Then stop gawping. You're putting me off me food." Alec: "I didn't realise I was." Rita: "Well, you are. It's unnerving." Alec: "Are you still seeing whatshisname?" Rita: "His name's Harry, as you well know. What if I am?" Alec: "Oh, nothing. Going well, is it?" Rita: "Better without your intefering, yes." Alec: "Round here last night, were he?" Rita: "I don't see that's any of your business, do you?" Alec: "I only wondered." Rita: "Oh, I get what the inquisition's for now. You think I lied about being sick so I could spend the night with him." Alec: "Don't be ridiculous, Rita. I know you'd never miss a date without a very good reason." Rita: "Why all the questions?" Alec: "I'm just curious. I want you to be happy." Rita: "Huh! That'd be a first. Yes, Alec. Harry was round here last night for a few hours. Then he had to get home to his kids, okay?" Alec: "Kids? He's never married?" Rita: "Separated." Alec: "Told you that, did he?" Rita: "Yes." Alec: "And you believe him?" Rita: "Course I do." Alec: "Met them, have you?" Rita: "Not yet." Alec: "Well, don't hold your breath." Rita: "What have you got against him? You don't even know him." Alec: "I've seen and heard enough." Rita: "Heard what?" Alec: "Plenty." Rita: "Look, Gilroy. If you're-" Alec: "I'm not. I promised, didn't I? Just be careful, that's all. Your Harry's not the man you think he is." Rita: "What's that supposed to mean?" Alec: "Nothing." Rita: "It must mean summat else you'd not have said it. Come on." Alec: "All right. I've heard he's handy with his fists. And not just on men." Rita: "Rubbish! He's never laid a finger on me." Alec: "Not yet." Rita: "Right, that's it. I'll not sit here and listen to anymore of your lies." Alec: "It's the truth, Rita!" Rita: "Oh, like our being married but I can't keep me hands off other men was the truth too, I suppose(!)" Alec: "That was different." Rita: "It always is! Get out." Alec: "Rita." Rita: "Out! And don't worry. I'll be there tonight like a good little girl. Still here? Never did have a good grasp of English, did you, Alec? But then, you've only ever listened to what you wanted."
She grabbed his arm roughly and hauled him up, making him spill his tea. She dragged him to the door and pushed him out.
Rita: "See yer, Gilroy. But hopefully not too soon." Alec: "Rita!"
She slammed the door and leant back against it. She was so mad with Alec he was lucky he left in one piece. She couldn't believe he wouldn't stop sticking his nose in despite her threats and his promises. Half an hour later she was dressed, made up and out. She crossed the road towards a building site and couldn't help smiling at the wolf whistles.
Builder 1: "Hello, darlin'. Come to see me, have yer?" Builder 2: "She's come to see me. Haven't yer, love?" Rita: "You should be so lucky." Builder 2: "I would if you'd give us a kiss." Rita: "Aren't you a bit young?" Builder 2: "I love older women. All that experience. Bet you could show me a thing or two, eh?" Rita: (laughs) "You'd never be able to keep up, love." Harry: "Leave it out, lads." Builder 1: "We're only having a bit of fun. Course, now you've got yerself a bird, you'll have forgotten all about that." Harry: "She IS my bird." Builder 2: "You're kidding?" Rita: "He's not. Hiya, love." Harry: "Be with you in a minute." Rita: "Okay." Builder 2: "You're seeing him?" Rita: "I am." Builder 2: "You can do much better." Rita: "You, I suppose?" Builder 2: "You'll find out what your're missing." Rita: "Ta for the offer, but I'm happy as I am." Builder 1: "Well, you know where we are when you get bored." Rita: "I'll bear that in mind." Harry: "Get back to work you two."
Harry led her out of earshot. Rita went to kiss him but he avoided it.
Rita: "What's up?" Harry: "Not here, eh?" Rita: "Not shy in front of your mates, are you?" Harry: "What are you doing here?" Rita: "I wanted to see you. Owt wrong with that?" Harry: "Not during working hours, eh? Any other time would've been great. I've got a very heavy workload on today." Rita: "Sorry. It's nearly dinnertime, though." Harry: "I'll be going to the pub with the lads." Rita: "Oh. Okay." Harry: "It's not that I'm not glad to see you. I just prefer to keep my work and private life separate." Rita: "I understand." Harry: "I'll see you tonight." Rita: "Fine." Harry: "And put summat decent on." Rita: "I am decent." Harry: "You're flashing your legs to all and sundry. If that skirt were any shorter, people'll be able to see what you had for breakfast." Rita: "You always said you liked me legs." Harry: "And I do. I think a longer skirt, or even trousers would be better." Rita: "There's nowt wrong with this." Harry: "Not if you want folk to think you're on the game, no." Rita: "They won't think that." Harry: "First impressions, Rita." Rita: "Are you saying I look like a tart?" Harry: "Course not. I know you're not. Others might." Rita: "Do you think so?" Harry: "Look at the way the lads reacted." Rita: "Yeah, but that were only a bit of fun." Harry: "What happens when it's not, eh? I'd hate anything to happen to you, Rita, love, because some fella takes one look at what you're wearing and thinks you're fair game." Rita: "Never thought of it that way." Harry: "I don't want anyone to get the wrong idea about you." Rita: "I can see that. Everyone goes round in minis these days." Harry: "But you're not everyone. You're my girlfriend and I want to make sure you're not in any danger." Rita: "No one's ever worried about me like that before. I can look after meself, mind." Harry: "They all say that." Rita: "I suppose you're right." Harry: "I am. Don't wear owt like that again, eh?" Rita: "Okay." Harry: "I've got to get back to work. Be round about seven." Rita: "Yeah." Harry: "Then I'll give you a lift to the club." Rita: "Will you have eaten?" Harry: "That's a stupid question. I'll be eating with my kids as usual." Rita: "Yeah. Don't know why I asked really. Don't drop a brick on your foot." Harry: "I'll try not to. See you later, love."
He kissed her cheek then returned to the site to the jeering and comments from his workmates. Rita was astounded he'd gone on so much about her clothes, but reasoned he had a point so returned home to change, stopping off to get some groceries on the way. Apart from having meals and swimming in tea, she spent the entire time chain smoking and clock watching. She poured herself a large vodka and lime to relax her but it didn't work. She couldn't believe she had two men trying to run her life in the same day. But she loved Harry, while could happily have strangled Alec, and knew deep down Harry had only said that about her skirt because he had her best interests at heart. She decided to pack them away as she wasn't going to waste what money she had by throwing them away. And Harry needen't know. She decided to wear them when he was working away. It was her life and what he didn't know wouldn't hurt him. As she emptied the overflowing ashtray there was a knock at the door. She answered it and let Harry in. He kissed her passionately.
Rita: "What was that for?" Harry: "Make up for dinnertime. You need a foghorn in here." Rita: "It is a bit thick. I'll open a window." Harry: "It's a pea-souper. You smoke too much." Rita: "And you drink too much, but you don't hear me getting at you." Harry: "I'm not getting at you. I'm only saying." Rita: "Well don't." Harry: "Is this about earlier?" Rita: "What makes you think that?" Harry: "Your mood." Rita: "I'm not in a mood." Harry: "Rita." Rita: "All right. Yes, I am a little narked at your entire behaviour." Harry: "If this is about the skirt-" Rita: "Not just that. Your whole attitude. It's like you were ashamed of me." Harry: "Of course I'm not ashamed of you. What gives you that idea?" Rita: "Your coldness." Harry: "I wasn't cold." Rita: "No? What would you call it, then? It certainly weren't affectionate." Harry: "Because the lads were there." Rita: "The lads? Harry, it were patently obvious you didn't want me there at all!" Harry: "You took me by surprise." Rita: "I had hoped we'd have dinner together." Harry: "I'd made plans." Rita: "And you didn't like me talking to your mates either." Harry: "I know what they're like. In fact, perhaps it would be best if you didn't go there again." Rita: "You ARE ashamed of me!" Harry: "No, I am not! You shouldn't have to put up with their lewd comments." Rita: "Why not?" Harry: "Because you're worth more than that." Rita: "It's only a bit of fun. No harm meant. I can take it." Harry: "But you shouldn't have to." Rita: "The way you're carrying on, it's like I'm nowt more than your bit of stuff." Harry: "Now you know you mean a lot to me." Rita: "When you can find the time to fit me in. I thought you'd be pleased to see me earlier. I missed you. I wanted to be with you." Harry: "You know the way things stand." Rita: "I know only too well." Harry: "Don't be like that. I've been totally honest with you." Rita: "Have you? When am I going to meet these kids of yours, then?" Harry: "How about coming over for Sunday dinner?" Rita: "Sure it's not too much trouble(?)" Harry: "You want to meet them, don't you?" Rita: "You know I do, else I'd never have mentioned it." Harry: "What's wrong with Sunday? I'll pick you up about one and we'll spend the afternoon round at mine." Rita: "Do they know yet?" Harry: "Not yet. I wanted to discuss it with you first. I'll tell them tomorrow." Rita: "Will you?" Harry: "I promise. Come here." Rita: "If you think a kiss and a cuddle will win me round, you're dafter than I thought." Harry: "Not so daft to love you I take it?" Rita: "No." Harry: "Thought not."
He took her in his arms, held her tightly and they kissed passionately.
Harry: "What time do you have to be at the club?" Rita: "Half nine." Harry: "That gives me plenty of time to get back in your good books." Rita: "What makes you think you will?" Harry: "I have every faith in myself." Rita: "Arrogant, aren't you?" Harry: "No. Just optimistic." Rita: "Won't be easy." Harry: "But think of the fun we'll have while I'm trying."
Sunday arrived and Rita was nervous. Harry sat in the chair while she did her hair and face.
Rita: "My hair won't cooperate today." Harry: "It looks fine." Rita: "It's a mess. I'M a mess." Harry: "You look as perfect as you always do." Rita: "Maybe to you. But what about to them? I want to make a good impression." Harry: "You will." Rita: "What if they don't like me?" Harry: "Course they will. They'll love you almost as much as I do." Rita: "Rubbish. Kids are fickle. Maybe we should make it another time." Harry: "They're nervous too." Rita: "Are they?" Harry: "Yes. First girlfriend of mine they've met. They want you to like them too." Rita: "I suppose so." Harry: "Everything will be fine. Don't worry." Rita: "Can't help it."
He went over and put his arms around her.
Harry: "Just be yourself. If you try too hard, it'll be a disaster." Rita: "I'll do me best." Harry: "I know you will. This is very important to me, Rita." Rita: "I know it is, love. And I'll try not to let you down." Harry: "Come here." Rita: "You'll smudge me lippy." Harry: "You can put some more on." Rita: "You are joking? With my hands shaking, it took me long enough to get it on at all!"
He kissed her cheek and she stroked his pock-marked face.
Harry: "I know what I'd rather do this afternoon." Rita: "You're not the only one." Harry: "Have we got time to-" Rita: "No!" Harry: "Shame." Rita: "Aye. Come on. Lead me to the execution."

Part 10
The afternoon went better than anyone expected. After the normal best behaviour, the ice was gradually broken and Rita got on very well with young Terry and Gail. She couldn't help feeling sad at what might have been if things had been different. She tried to brush the broody feelings aside as she knew it was pointless feeling that way. It was an enjoyable afternoon, which made Harry proud. Once the kids were asleep, Rita did the washing up while Harry leant against the sink beside her.
Rita: "They're great kids and a credit to you." Harry: "I think their mam can take some credit." Rita: "Rubbish. She walked out leaving you to bring them up practically single-handed. That can't have been easy." Harry: "It wasn't, especially with me working away a lot." Rita: "Well, you should be proud of yourself. They could easily have gone off the rails by now." Harry: "Yeah." Rita: "And they're not latch-key kids either. They're well fed and looked after properly." Harry: "They liked you." Rita: "I liked them." Harry: "Gail asked before if we were going to get married." Rita: "What did you say?" Harry: "Maybe." Rita: "Oh." Harry: "Depends on what happens in the future." Rita: "Yeah. No guarantees of owt in life." Harry: "Doesn't mean I don't want you to be a permanant part of mine." Rita: "What are you saying?" Harry: "How about moving in?" Rita: "Here?" Harry: "Well, we can hardly move into your flat." Rita: "No. Only one bedroom." Harry: "Exactly. Well?" Rita: "It's a big step." Harry: "I know. Well? How do you feel about being Mrs Bates?" Rita: "Is that a proposal?" Harry: "In name only." Rita: "I don't understand." Harry: "You know I can't get divorced, which means we can't get wed." Rita: "I'd forgotten about that." Harry: "Wish I could. If you agreed, I wouldn't want anyone to know we're living over t'brush." Rita: "Why not?" Harry: "Think of the gossip." Rita: "I can handle that." Harry: "The kids can't. It wouldn't be fair on them." Rita: "No. What are you saying, Harry?" Harry: "You get yourself a cheap ring from the market and call yourself my wife and their mam. No one'll be any the wiser." Rita: "Isn't it a bit soon?" Harry: "Are you turning me down?" Rita: "No, but-" Harry: "I thought you wanted to be with me." Rita: "I do. I just need to think about it." Harry: "Don't take too long." Rita: "I'll take as long as it takes. If I do decide to, I want to make sure I'm doing the right thing." Harry: "You will be." Rita: "What if we find we can't live together?" Harry: "We'll work something out." Rita: "Give us a couple of days, then I'll let you know." Harry: "Suppose I've got no choice." Rita: "Not if you want me to make the right decision for everyone." Harry: "No. Come here." Rita: "Me hands are wet." Harry: "Then dry them."
He passed her a towel but before she had the chance to use it, they were kissing so passionately you could imagine steam rising. They started to tear each other's clothes off and he pushed her onto the cold, Formica table...
A couple of nights later, Rita was in the dressing room in-between apppearances when Alec walked in.
Rita: "Don't you ever knock?" Alec: "I guessed you were fully clothed." Rita: "Lucky guess." Alec: "Years of disappointment. Haven't seen much of you lately." Rita: "No, and you've seen all I'll let you." Alec: "How's things with you and..." Rita: "Harry?" Alec: "Yes." Rita: "Never better. Met his kids Sunday." Alec: "Really?" Rita: "Yeah. They're smashing. We got on better than either of us thought." Alec: "Good." Rita: "He's also asked me to live with him." Alec: "I hope you said no." Rita: "I've said I'll think about it." Alec: "You can't, Rita!" Rita: "And you can't tell me what to do, Gilroy!" Alec: "I know. But please, Rita. Don't do that. See him if you must. But no more than that." Rita: "What I do is nowt to do with you, remember?" Alec: "You'll come a cropper." Rita: "What's that supposed to mean?" Alec: "I've been asking around about him and his wife." Rita: "You've done what?! How dare you!" Alec: "I had to. I couldn't sit by and see you get hurt." Rita: "What gives you the right to go checking up on him?" Alec: "I worry about you, Rita." Rita: "I can look after meself." Alec: "He's not all he seems." Rita: "You've said that before." Alec: "And no wonder after what I've been told." Rita: "Not him using his fists again." Alec: "That's why there's no Mrs Bates anymore. She disappeared one day and no one's heard from her since." Rita: "Rubbish." Alec: "It's true, Rita. She's not been in touch with her friends or family." Rita: "Harry did say the kids haven't heard from her since she left." Alec: "Rumour has it, he laid into her so badly he killed her." Rita: "Now I know you're talking nonsense." Alec: "He's hardly likely to admit it, is he?" Rita: "Get out, Gilroy!" Alec: "Not again." Rita: "Yes, again. I'm sick of this. It's my life, so keep that out unless you want it broken." Alec: "All right, Rita. But don't come running to me when he gives you a black eye or worse." (leaves) Rita: "Bastard!"
She had a cigarette to calm her down, changed and returned to the stage. She walked around the tables as usual as she reached the end of her act.
Harry: "You slut!" Rita: "Harry! What are you doing here? I thought you were at home." Harry: "WISHED I was, more like. Then I'd never have seen you in action." Rita: "What are you talking about?" Harry: "Can't keep your hands off him, can you? Sitting on his lap. Taking him back to yours after, were you?" Rita: "Don't be so ridiculous." Harry: "And don't you talk to me like that!"
He slapped her so hard you could hear her neck crack. Everyone was shocked, but none more than Rita who ran back to the dressing room. Alec was livid at the way Rita was treated in public, but deep down delighted Harry was showing his true colours and hoped now she'd see sense. Harry ran after her and heard her crying. He slowly opened the dressing room door.
Harry: "I'm so sorry, Rita." Rita: "Go away!" Harry: "I don't know what came over me. Yes, I do. I was jealous. I couldn't stand seeing you touch someone else." Rita: "You know I always do that. I did it the night I met you. You know it means nothing." Harry: "Yes. I'm scared you'll meet someone else while you're working. I couldn't bear it if I lost you." Rita: "Hitting me's the right way to go about it." Harry: "I didn't mean to. I wouldn't hurt you for anything. I love you, Rita." Rita: "You've got a funny way of showing it." Harry: "Something just snapped. You looked like you were enjoying it." Rita: "You love me so much you decided to check up on me." Harry: "It wasn't like that. The kids are at a friend's. I thought, as I have the whole night free, I'd surprise you." Rita: "You did that all right."
He slowly went across to her and touched her but she shrugged him off and turned away.
Harry: "I'm really very sorry, Rita." Rita: "So you keep saying." Harry: "It'll never happen again." Rita: "How can you be sure?" Harry: "Because I'll try and control my jealousy." Rita: "I suppose I should be glad you are jealous. I'd be worried if you weren't." Harry: "You mean everything to me." Rita: "You'll have to learn to trust me." Harry: "I do." Rita: "Felt like it." Harry: "Have I ruined everything between us?" Rita: "No."
She faced him and they threw their arms around each other.
Harry: "I'll never hit you again, Rita." Rita: "You'd better not. You do, and I'll walk out of your house."
He let her go and looked at her.
Harry: "Does that mean...?" Rita: "Yes, Harry. I've decided to live with you." Harry: "That's marvellous! You'll make a great mam for the kids." Rita: "I hope so." Harry: "When?" Rita: "Tomorrow? Or is that too soon?" Harry: "Not soon enough. But I can wait a bit longer. What about the ring?" Rita: "I'll use my mother's, if that's okay?" Harry: "Fine." Rita: "Won't turn green." Harry: "No. I really am sorry for hitting you, Rita." Rita: "I can see that." Harry: "Let's get out of here." Rita: "I'll second that." Harry: "Your place or mine?" Rita: "Yours I think. Have to get used to waking up in the morning beside you." Harry: "Bed's more comfy than yours. Double too." Rita: "Ah, but single's more cosy." Harry: "True. Shall we go?" Rita: "Okay."
A couple of months later, Rita had settled into her new role as surrogate mother and common-law wife. Terry and Gail had been told if anyone asked, they were to say Rita was their mother. Things were going well in her career and private life. Despite their disagreements, Harry was true to his word and never hit her. He was working away and she missed him. It was afternoon and Alec was round to discuss work he'd been lining up for her. They were sat on the settee smoking with his arm around her shoulders.
Alec: "What do you think?" Rita: "I don't know. A few months back, I'd have jumped at it. I've got commitments now." Alec: "If Harry objects, then he's not the man for you. London, Rita. Opportunities like this don't come up every day." Rita: "I know. It's not a question of whether Harry objects or not, Alec. It's whether I want to spend that much time away from him and the kids." Alec: "I could understand if they were your own, Rita. But they're not." Rita: "We're just starting to be settled and like a family." Alec: "I'm sure they'd understand. Or doesn't Harry trust you?" Rita: "Course he trusts me." Alec: "I remember that split lip he gave you. Didn't trust you then." Harry: "And it looks like I was right not to." Rita: "Harry."
She went to greet him.
Rita: "Oh, Harry, love. What a wonderful surprise." Harry: "Don't you touch me." Rita: "Harry!" Harry: "Very cosy, I must say. I'm sorry to interrupt your afternoon." Rita: "It's not like that." Harry: "It's EXACTLY like that from what I can see. And I thought I told you no more mini-skirts! Rita: "I know you did." Harry: "Did you go out like that?" Rita: "Your kids have to eat."
He hit her which made Alec furious.
Harry: "You deliberately disobeyed me! You'll never wear them again!"
He tried to rip her dress off but she fought back. He hit her again so hard she was thrown across the room, her mouth bleeding. Alec went to comfort her but Harry grabbed him by the lapels and pushed him against the wall.
Harry: "You keep your hands off her! In fact, you come anywhere near her again and I'll kill you. Do you undrstand?" Alec: "You keep your hands off her, then." Harry: "I'll do what I like!" Alec: "That's no way to treat a lady." Harry: "A lady? That's a joke. She's a two-bit whore, as we both know."
Rita was stung by that remark, unable to believe that was what Harry really thought of her. She knew she had to stop him hurting Alec, even though it would lead to more violence. She felt blood trickling down her chin and wiped it away then tried to pull Harry off.
Rita: "Leave him alone!" Harry: "Shut your filthy mouth!" Rita: "He hasn't done anything!" Harry: "Only because I walked in!" Rita: "Nowt would've happened! I thought you trusted me!"
He loosened his grip on Alec and grabbed her tightly around the throat. Alec was too scared to move.
Harry: "Looks like I was right not to all along."
He hit her hard again and she fell to the floor. He kicked her in the stomach then stood on her hand. Alec couldn't bear to watch her being treated like that, or hear her cries of pain.
Alec: "Now, see here-" Harry: "This is nowt to do with you. Get out of my house!" Alec: "It has everything to do with me as her friend." Harry: "Out! And don't come sniffing around again. She's my bird, do you hear? MINE!" Rita: "Alec?" Alec: "I'm sorry, Rita. I truly am." (leaves) Rita: "ALEC!" Harry: "Loverboy won't help you. He knows what's good for him." Rita: "There was nothing going on! There's never been anything going on!"
Harry crouched beside her, grabbed her hair and pulled her head back hard.
Harry: "You just can't help yourself, can you? Throwing yourself at anything in trousers." Rita: "I don't!" Harry: "Well, I'll make sure you'll never do it again. You belong to me and I'm going to make sure you stay that way." Rita: "What are you going to do? Harry? Harry, no! Please, God, no!"

Part 11
A while later, Harry sat on the bed surveying the mess which were Rita's clothes after he slashed them. He could hear Rita's uncontrollable sobs coming from downstairs and put his head in his hands, racked with guilt over what he'd done. He was convinced he'd drive her away now and was determined to do everything he could to make sure she stayed. He got off the bed, picked up his dressing gown and made his way to the living room. He stopped to look at her curled up in a ball, holding herself, crying. His heart sank at the sight and he felt worse than he did already.
Harry: "Rita? Rita, love?"
He noticed she tensed up but couldn't stop crying. He slowly crossed to her and crouched beside her. Whe he touched her arm she flinched, and the full realisation of his actions hit him like a sledgehammer.
Harry: "I'm so sorry, Rita. I'm so very sorry."
She still said nothing and lay there, too afraid to move and wished he'd go away.
Harry: "I've brought you this to put on. Rita? I never meant it to happen. I didn't plan it. I love you. I don't like hurting you. Rita, you must believe me. I am really sorry for what I've done."
She still said nothing. Harry draped the dressing gown across her, sighed and went out. When she was sure he'd gone, she let out more sobs. She tried to move but ached all over. She hauled herself up, throwing the robe across the room in disgust and staggered to the bathroom, locking the door behind her. She felt bile rising as she remembered what Harry had done and was violently sick down the toilet. After wiping her mouth and flushing it away, she examined herself in the mirror as the bath slowly filled up. When it was, she turned the water off and gingerly climbed in then scrubbed so hard her skin bled. She sank under the water and could have happily drowned if her face didn't sting so much. She broke the surface choking. She smoothed her hair back and started thinking about what she was going to do. The water by now had gone cold and her skin was wrinkled, but she didn't care. She began to wonder if this was how Harry had treated his wife and perhaps the rumours about him were true. If she left, where could she go? Not to Alec. Not after he left her the way he did. Not back to her flat, dump though it was, because she'd given it up. There was only uncle Sam, but she didn't want him to see her like this. In fact, she didn't want anyone to see her like that. She was trapped. At least until the visible marks had gone. And the last thing she wanted was to be within ten miles of Harry Bates. She eased herself out of the bath and dried herself. Her dressing gown was hanging up and she slipped it on then went to the bedroom and was shocked when she saw what he'd done to her clothes. Everything she owned which was in the bedroom was in shreds. She sank to her knees sobbing again as she picked up fragments. She heard the front door and tensed again falling silent, trying to stifle her sobs, still sniffing and her nose running. She sensed she was not alone but was afraid to turn round to see who it was, though she had a fair idea.
Harry: "Rita? I'm sorry about your clothes. I've bought you new. Rita? Rita, love? Will you please say summat, if only to shout at me?"
He put the bags on the bed and knelt in front of her. Fear gripped her, wondering what he'd do next. She couldn't even look at him.
Harry: "Rita?"
He gently lifted her head and something snapped inside her. She pummelled him, screaming. She couldn't stop as the tears flowed again. He tried to fend off her blows, but knew he deserved it. When she'd exhausted herself and didn't have the strength to fight anymore, she collapsed in a heap holding herself. He cautiously put his arms around her and stroked her matted, wet hair.
Harry: "What have I done to you, eh? What have I done?"
A few hours later, Rita was in bed, arms around her knees, wanting to keep as far away from Harry, who was sat at the end of the bed, as possible.
Harry: "I really am sorry, Rita." Rita: "So you keep saying. Doesn't change anything, does it?" Harry: "No. I don't know what came over me. I've never been like that before." Rita: "I've only your word for that." Harry: "I'll make it up to you. I promise." Rita: "Not sure I want anything to do with you anymore." Harry: "I wouldn't blame you if you didn't. What I did was unforgivable." Rita: "At least we agree on something. You said you trusted me." Harry: "And I do. I don't know what happened. I just saw you and Alec and saw red." Rita: "I thought you were going to kill him." Harry: "So did I." Rita: "I thought you were going to kill me." Harry: "I'd never do that." Rita: "You had your hand round my throat! I couldn't breathe!" Harry: "I'm sorry. What more can I say?" Rita: "Nothing. Don't say anything. The damage is already done." Harry: "I'm trying to undo it." Rita: "Well, I'm sorry. Raping me can't just be forgotten. It won't disappear overnight like a headache." Harry: "No." Rita: "You called me a two-bit whore." Harry: "I know." Rita: "At least I know what you REALLY think of me." Harry: "I didn't mean it, Rita. I was angry." Rita: "That's no excuse. Truth always comes out when you've got a cob on." Harry: "Rita, I love you." Rita: "You don't love me. If you did, you'd not have carried on the way you did." Harry: "I got jealous BECAUSE I love you." Rita: "If this is your idea of love, I'd rather be a two-bit whore." Harry: "You don't mean that." Rita: "Oh, I do. Anything's better than being used as a punchbag by you. Or worse." Harry: "I'm sorry." Rita: "You said after last time you'd not hit me again." Harry: "And I meant it." Rita: "At the time. Just like now. But it won't be the last time, will it, Harry? You'll keep doing it again and again." Harry: "No! I said I was sorry." Rita: "Aye. Said that before, an' all. And like a fool, I believed you. Won't be easy to convince me after this." Harry: "I do realise that. Give me time, Rita. It'll work out. I'll make sure it does. I hate seeing you like this." Rita: "Then don't do it to me."
They heard the front door and looked at each other.
Harry: "That'll be the kids." Rita: "What are you going to tell them? I know it won't be the truth. You wouldn't want to shatter their illusions of their perfect father(!)" Harry: "I'll think of something. Do you want to see them?" Rita: "No." Harry: "I'll tell them you're asleep, then." Rita: "Tell them what the hell you like. I don't care anymore. I'll be out of here as soon as I'm able." Harry: "I don't want you to leave, Rita." Rita: "Tough. I've had it with being at the wrong end of your temper." Harry: "We'll talk about this later." Rita: "We won't because it's all settled. Hadn't you better go and see to Terry and Gail?" Harry: "I'll be back shortly." Rita: "Don't hurry on my account." Harry: "Can I get you something for your hand?" Rita: "Oh, remembered about that, did you(?)" Harry: "Of course I did." Rita: "No." Harry: "How is it?" Rita: "Painful." Harry: "Sorry." Rita: "Stop saying that!" Harry: "But I am!" Rita: "It's just words to you. They mean nothing. If they did, you wouldn't keep saying it." Harry: "How else am I going to prove I am?" Rita: "If I have to tell you that, then maybe the sooner I get out of here, the better for everyone."
He didn't know what else to say and worried the kids would come in, so left her to think.
Harry: "I hadn't realised it was that time already." Gail: "Daddy!" Harry: "Hello, love." Terry: "What are you doing here? Where's Rita?" Harry: "Now what have I told you? You call her mam." Terry: "Whatever. Where is she?" Harry: "In the bedroom asleep. Don't disturb her." Terry: "Is she all right?" Harry: "Not really. That's why I'm here. She was... mugged, and quite badly hurt." Gail: "Oh, no." Terry: "Will she be okay?" Harry: "In time. She's still in shock. I thought it best to give her some peace and quiet. Anyway, good day at school?" Terry: "It was all right." Gail: "I had a great day." Harry: "Well, come and help me do the tea and tell me all about it."
Meanwhile in the bedroom, Rita's curiosity got the better of her and she had a look at the replacement clothes Harry bought her. She curled her lip at the dowdy outfits he expected her to wear.
Rita: "Still, beggars can't be choosers."
She put one on, opened the door, crept down the stairs hoping no one would spot her, grabbed her coat and bag and quietly let herself out, taking a quick look back before going through the door.
Back in the kitchen.
Gail: "Do you think Rita would like a cup of tea?" Harry: "That's a good idea. I'll take one up to her. That's a very nice thought, Gail." Gail: "I always have nice thoughts." Harry: "I know you do, love. You two keep an eye on the food while I pop upstairs for a bit."
He poured the tea, added milk and went upstairs. He was worried when Rita wasn't in the bedroom. He checked the other bedrooms but they were empty. As he returned downstairs, he saw her coat and bag were missing from the peg and feared the worst. She'd left no note so that made it clear she'd gone and didn't want him to know where. But he was determined to find out. She'd not leave him and get away with it. He'd make sure of that.
Harry: "Bitch!" Terry: "Dad?" Harry: "Nothing, lad. Rita's still asleep and I didn't want to wake her. Look, I've got to go out for a while. Will you be okay till I get back?" Terry: "Course we will. We've managed loads of times before." Harry: "Good. I'll try no to be long. Oh, and don't disturb Rita. She needs her sleep." Gail: "We'll be quiet." Harry: "Good girl. See you later."
He handed her the cup, grabbed his coat and went, leaving Terry and Gail puzzled. Gail returned to the kitchen.
Gail: "Are you coming?" Terry: "In a minute. Need the toilet."
He climbed the stairs and went into the main bedroom. Unsurprised, he found no sign of Rita but was shocked at the shredded clothes all over the place. It wasn't difficult to put two and two together as he was haunted by his mother's screams when his father laid into her. He liked Rita and felt angry she was being treated the same way. He started rooting through the drawers and then he found her address book. He quickly took it to his room and hid it before going to the bathroom, flushing the toilet and returning to his sister.

Part 12
A couple of days later, Terry bunked off school and boarded a train to Blackpool. He had no idea if he'd find Rita there or not, but hoped the journey wouldn't be wasted. As he spent all his money on the fare, he walked to the address in her book, constantly stopping to ask directions. He eventually came to the house, went to the door, took a deep breath and knocked. After a short time an elderly man answered.
Sam: "Yes?" Terry: "Is Rita here?" Sam: "Rita. Someone here to see you."
When Rita came into the hall, both she and Terry were shocked. Him at seeing the mess her face was in, and her ashamed he had to see her like that.
Rita: "Terry, love. Why aren't you at school?" Terry: "I wanted to see you." Rita: "And you came all that way on your own?" Terry: "Yes." Rita: "Does your dad know you're here?" Terry: "Don't be stupid. It'd be him standing here if he did." Rita: "So he didn't send you?" Terry: "Course not." Rita: "Well, now you're here, I suppose you'd better come in."
He did and Rita led him to the living room while Sam closed the door and went upstairs to give them some privacy.
Rita: "Take your coat off and sit down." Terry: "Thanks. Did me dad do that?" Rita: "What a question!" Terry: "Did he?" Rita: "What makes you ask such a thing?" Terry: "Because I've seen it all before with me mam. She'd cover up for him an' all." Rita: "I've been told how he treated her but never believed it." Terry: "It's all true." Rita: "Has he ever hit you or Gail?" Terry: "Sometimes." Rita: "That's terrible!" Terry: "Not as terrible as what he's done to you." Rita: "You're just kids. He shouldn't take his moods out on you." Terry: "It were worse before you came along. He's got better." Rita: "Not that much better." Terry: "No. Has he hit you a lot?" Rita: "Is it any of your business?" Terry: "Yes. Me and Gail like you a lot, Rita. You're more like a mate than a sort of stepmum." Rita: "That's nice." Terry: "So?" Rita: "No, Terry. This was only the second time. But it were worse this time." Terry: "Are you coming back?" Rita: "I don't know. I love yer dad and I'm very fond of you and Gail. But I don't think I can live with his temper." Terry: "Please come home, Rita. It's been awful since you went." Rita: "In what way? Terry? He hasn't." Terry: "He has." Rita: "I don't believe that man. He takes it out on his own kids because he drove me away. How low can someone get?" Terry: "It's more me than Gail because I'm older and try to protect her." Rita: "Oh, Terry, love." Terry: "You've got to come back, Rita. You've just got to." Rita: "It's not that easy. You don't know what he did to me. It can never be the same." Terry: "Can't you at least try to make it how it was?" Rita: "Oh, Terry. If only I could explain. I need to think about it." Terry: "I haven't got long. I've got to get back at the normal time so it looks like I was at school." Rita: "Never mind all that." (sighs) "If I stay here, he'll get worse, yes?" Terry: "He always does." Rita: "That's no life for you two. If I go back, he'll lay off you?" Terry: "For the moment." Rita: "I'll need to talk to him." Terry: "Does that mean you'll come back with me?" Rita: "No. It means I'll have to get him on neutral ground." Terry: "Here?" Rita: "Don't worry." Terry: "I can't help it. He'll know I've not been at school and he'll get so mad." Rita: "No, he won't." Terry: "How can you be so sure? We both know what he's like." Rita: "Terry. I'll ring him and get him here." Terry: "But-" Rita: "The time it takes for him to drive up gives you plenty of time to get back. He needn't know you were ever here. I won't say, especially if I decide not to go." Terry: "And if you stay here, he'll lay into us for sure." Rita: "You're putting me in a very difficult position, Terry. Do you know if he saw Alec?" Terry: "He's said nowt except you'd gone away for a few days. Why?" Rita: "There a very few people who know about my uncle Sam. Yer dad isn't one of them and I intend to keep it that way. This is my haven. I'll get him to meet me by the Tower or summat. Look, I'll give you money for a taxi to the station. You did get a return ticket I trust." Terry: "I'm not daft, you know." Rita: "I know you're not. I'll ring for one now. Then I'll ring yer dad. You'll be long gone and safe, okay?" Terry: "I hope you're right." Rita: "I'm always right. Where's yer dad?" Terry: "At home. He's not gone to work since you went." Rita: "I see. What about his job in Coventry?" Terry: "He's been phoning in sick. He's waiting for you to walk through the door." Rita: "How do you know, if he's not told you the truth?" Terry: "Everytime someone knocks, he rushes to answer it." Rita: "Right. Been drinking too, I expect." Terry: "Far too much. He's always worse drunk." Rita: "I'll see what I can do. I'm making no promises, mind. And you can't expect me to." Terry: "No." Rita: "I'll get you that taxi."
She did that, waved him off then dialled her own home number, her heart in her mouth when he answered. He agreed reluctantly to drive up there and meet her by the Tower. As she waited to go out, she did a cover-up job on her facial bruises.
Sam: "Are you going back to him?" Rita: "I have to." Sam: "No, you don't." Rita: "I do. If I don't, God knows what he'll do to those poor kids. They don't deserve that." Sam: "I suppose not." Rita: "I know I'll regret it, but I'm doing it for Terry and Gail." Sam: "Well, it's your decision." Rita: "I wish it were. It's been forced on me." Sam: "He should be locked up." Rita: "I know." Sam: "He's an animal." Rita: "You don't have to tell me that, uncle Sam. Trouble is, despite everything, I still love him." Sam: "You always were a fool to yourself." Rita: "You don't have to tell me that either. I'll make sure it's on my terms, not his." Sam: "Good girl." Rita: "Though for how long he'll stick to it if he agrees is anyone's guess. I'll see you later." Sam: "Aren't you going to be too early?" Rita: "I want to be there before him. Make him think I'm staying on the front or summat. Last thing I want is him finding out about you and using his fists again. I should never have left me address book behind. That was stupid. Thank goodness it were Terry who found it." Sam: "Why did you?" Rita: "Weren't thinking clearly. I just wanted to get away as fast as possible." Sam: "Well, good luck." Rita: "I'll need it."
She kissed him then strolled casually towards the Tower where she waited. Finally she saw his car in the distance and prepared herself. She hoped to never see him again, but that decision had been taken out of her hands. He pulled up and got out. He stood by the car a while looking at her. She just wished he'd get a move on so she could get this over with. He walked towards her, unsure whether to kiss her or not, but thought it better not to.
Harry: "Rita." Rita: "Harry." Harry: "How are you?" Rita: "Still sore." Harry: "I'm sorry."
She felt her heckles rising, but knew she mustn't lose her temper or Terry and Gail would suffer.
Rita: "Well, it's done now. Glad you could come." Harry: "Are you? Why did you leave, Rita?" Rita: "Did you really expect me to stay after what you did?" Harry: "I suppose not." Rita: "I couldn't stand the thought of sharing a room, let alone a bed with you after that." Harry: "No. Your bruises have gone." Rita: "They're still there. Just hidden by the war paint." Harry: "I've missed you." Rita: "Missed hitting me, you mean." Harry: "No! Oh, Rita. I love you so much I hate the thought of you with other men." Rita: "Nothing ever happens! If I'm to come back, you've got to get that into your thick head." Harry: "I'll do anything to have you home again." Rita: "You can start by trusting me. I'm a one man woman. But, if you refuse to accept that and insist on thinking I jump into bed with any fella I meet, then there's no future for us." Harry: "I'll try." Rita: "You'll have to do more than that, Harry. You've got to believe I won't." Harry: "Yes." Rita: "That's not all." Harry: "Name it." Rita: "My clothes." Harry: "What about them?" Rita: "I want to be able to wear what I want. Not what YOU tell me to." Harry: "But then you look like a tart!" Rita: "Goodbye, Harry." Harry: "Wait! Wait a minute. All right." Rita: "You give in as easy as that?" Harry: "I love you. I want you home. I don't like the idea of you showing what you've got so anyone can see. But I'm willing to put up with it if it means you'll stay with me." Rita: "I am what I am, Harry. You can't change that, no matter how hard you try." Harry: "I suppose not." Rita: "You know not." Harry: "Is that all?" Rita: "Not quite. Sex." Harry: "What about it?" Rita: "There'll be none until I feel I can trust you again." Harry: "Will we still be sleeping together?" Rita: "Suppose we'll have to. As long as you keep your hands to yourself." Harry: "I told you, Rita. I'll do anything." Rita: "And no forcing yourself on me again when I say no, okay?" Harry: "It's the least I can do." Rita: "I want you to swear on your kids lives you agree to everything, Harry." Harry: "I swear on their lives. Now, are you coming home?" Rita: "Yes. You wait here while I get my things." Harry: "How long will you be?" Rita: "As long as it takes. And no following me, or I stay where I am." Harry: "Okay."
She started to walk but hailed a taxi. She asked the driver to wait while she packed, said goodbye to her beloved uncle and returned to Harry at the Tower. He put her case, which she'd bought there along with new clothes, in the boot and drove her back to Weatherfield. Terry and Gail were delighted to see her when they came home from school, though Terry was worried about whether Rita had told his father about his visit. She winced as Gail hugged her tightly. Harry suggested a takeaway for tea, rather than cooking anything. As Rita wanted a quiet word with Terry, she suggested Harry take Gail, which he did.
Rita: "Don't look so nervous. He doesn't know you were there." Terry: "Thanks." Rita: "I did say I wouldn't tell him. Did you get into trouble when you went back to school?" Terry: "Just a bit. I told them I were at the dentist, only they wanted a note." Rita: "Ah. Well, I'll write you one. It'll be our little secret." Terry: "I'm really grateful, Rita." Rita: "That's what substitute mam's are for." Terry: "Not a lot would care so much. I'm really glad you came back." Rita: "Don't get me wrong, Terry. I love yer dad, but I'm only here for you and Gail." Terry: "What if he hits you again?" Rita: "I'll cross that bridge when I come to it." Terry: "Do you think he will?" Rita: "I'm sure of it. I may have only known him a few months, but I've got his measure. Things will never be the same between us. But I can't let him hurt either of you." Terry: "You're risking a heck of a lot." Rita: "I know. But if he's got to take it out on anyone, I'd sooner it were me. I can handle meself better for a start. I'll do everything I can to stop him hurting either of you." Terry: "I always look forward to him going away. Is that wrong?" Rita: "Course not, love. I expect, in time, I'll be the same." Terry: "Whatever do you see in him?" Rita: "Eee, Terry, I wish I knew. I reckon cupid must've been on the ale the night I met yer dad and fired his arrows willy-nilly. He does have his good points. Well, when he's not lost his temper." Terry: "You're much too good for him." Rita: "Maybe. Though they say you get what you deserve in life." Terry: "You don't deserve to be treated so badly by him." Rita: "No one does." Terry: "Will you have a baby?" Rita: Where did that come from?" Terry: "Just wondered." Rita: "No, love. There'll be no baby. I can't have any, you see." Terry: "Why?" Rita: "Well, some women can't. Anyway, if I could, I wouldn't want one with him. I'd be too afraid of what he'd do when it cried." Terry: "You'd be a good mam." Rita: "You think so?" Terry: "Aye. You're good with us." Rita: "Thank you." Terry: "You deserve to have kids of your own." Rita: "Yeah, well, like I said, it won't happen." Terry: "Does it make you sad?" Rita: "Not as much as it used to. I've had far too many years to get used to the idea. Still, you know you can always come to me anytime if you can't talk to your dad, don't you?" Terry: "Can I?" Rita: "Course you can. Wouldn't have said so otherwise. And owt you don't want him to know will stay between us." Terry: "I wouldn't want to cause trouble between you." Rita: "Don't be daft. Any trouble will be caused by yer dad, not you." Terry: "Thanks. Mam." Rita: "Eh?" Terry: "It is okay to call you that, isn't it?" Rita: "If that's what you want." Terry: "Dad wants us to tell anyone that's who you are and told us to call you that. But you're like a mam so I want to." Rita: "Aw, Terry. I'm touched. I really am. Thank you. Hey, I'd better get that note for your teacher done before they get back."

Part 13
Later when Terry and Gail were asleep, Rita and Harry were alone. It was really the last thing she wanted but had to keep her word to Terry. And she dreaded going to bed.
Rita: "Will you be going back to work tomorrow?" Harry: "How did you know I hadn't been?" Rita: "Terry told me." Harry: "He had no right." Rita: "Don't be too hard on him. I asked how you'd been these past few days." Harry: "Oh. Yes. I take it you'll still be here when I get back properly." Rita: "Course I will. Perhaps the time apart will be good for us." Harry: "It seems you can't wait for me to go." Rita: "What I'm saying is, things are too raw at the moment. It won't go away, but it might be easier." Harry: "I see what you mean. Will it be okay in two months?" Rita: "I can't answer that at this time, Harry. It would be unfair of you to expect me to. I'll still be here looking after Terry and Gail. But we can't see into the future. I wish we could. The physical scars will be healed by the time you come back. Not so sure about the emotional ones. I'm sure they'll go. In time. That's what you need to give me, Harry. And if you love me as much as you keep saying you do, you will." Harry: "And I told you, Rita, I'll do anything." Rita: "I hope you mean that. Don't want you coming back and forgetting." Harry: "I won't." Rita: "Good. What did you say to Alec about my absence?" Harry: "Nothing." Rita: "Nothing?" Harry: "I'm sure he knows why you've not been working and spun them some story." Rita: "He's good at that. I'll have to see him to discuss going back to work." Harry: "You're not thinking of working?" Rita: "Course I am. It's what I do." Harry: "I don't think you should do that anymore." Rita: "Oh, you don't(?)" Harry: "No. You've got other people to think about." Rita: "Meaning you." Harry: "Meaning the kids. You have responsibilities. You can't leave them half the night alone." Rita: "I'll get a babysitter. It's what you did." Harry: "That's different." Rita: "Why? Oh, hang on. You mean because you always slept in your own bed." Harry: "No!" Rita: "Oh, yes, you do! I don't believe you! You're at it again. You just can't help yourelf. You say one thing but mean another." Harry: "Like what?" Rita: "That you trust me when it's plain you don't really and never will." Harry: "I do trust you, Rita." Rita: "Like hell you do! You'd have no problem with me going back to work if you did. But, no. You come out with all sorts of rubbish rather than speaking the truth for once in this relationship. I NEED to work. If I have to stay here all day, I'll go crackers." Harry: "You won't. You'll have plenty to do to occupy yourself." Rita: "I want my life back, Harry. I want some sort of normality. And if the only way is to walk out of here for good, I'm quite prepared to do that and sugar you." Harry: "You wouldn't do that, Rita." Rita: "I've done it once." Harry: "Don't try and blackmail me." Rita: "I'm not. I'm just telling you what's what. If you choose to see it that way, nothing I can do about it." Harry: "We'll discuss this when I've finished the job." Rita: "Might be gone by then." Harry: "You said you wouldn't." Rita: "We all say things, Harry, then go back on them. You should know that if anyone does." Harry: "You're setting a hell of a lot of demands, Rita." Rita: "Only because I'm fed up with you trying to run my life. Among other things." Harry: "I want you to stay. I want us to be a proper family. I want you to be happy." Rita: "Then you'll have no problem with me working. After all, I trust you when you're out of my sight. For all I know, you could be up to all sorts with other women." Harry: "I'm not!" Rita: "How do I know that?" Harry: "Because I'm telling you." Rita: "Like I've constantly been telling you I'm not?" Harry: "That's different." Rita: "It's exactly the same only you don't want to admit it. I go to the club, do my spots then come back home to you. Same time every day when I'm working. What's there not to trust? I've never been late, not once. And you know I'm always where I say I'll be. You can't deny any of that, Harry." Harry: "No. Okay, Rita. Go back to work." Rita: "I intend to. I take it you have no problem if I ask Alec to come round tomorrow." Harry: "To do what?" Rita: "There you go again." Harry: "Sorry." Rita: "So you should be. We've got to discuss work. Last time he were here, he mentioned summat about London." Harry: "London?" Rita: "I was turning him down when you came in and started." Harry: "Were you(?)" Rita: "Yes. He thought your not trusting me was the reason. And wouldn't believe I didn't want to spend that amount of time away from you and the kids. More fool me, eh?" Harry: "And if the offer's still open?" Rita: "I won't go." Harry: "I want you to." Rita: "Why?" Harry: "Because you really want it." Rita: "I would've before. Now I want to stay local to give the kids some stability when you're not here. They've not had much of that up till now. If no one bothers to stay around every day, they might as well be in a home." Harry: "You'd turn it down for us?" Rita: "Yes. And because I don't trust Gilroy." Harry: "In what way?" Rita: "In every way. And before you start shouting the odds, I've already told you he's tried it on more than once." Harry: "I know you did. What if he has another go?" Rita: "Calm down. I've sorted him. He won't try again if he knows what's good for him." Harry: "What did you do?" Rita: "Humiliated him. He knows not to try again. But that's not the reason." Harry: "What is?" Rita: "He keeps telling tales about you." Harry: "Like what?" Rita: "Rumours he's picked up." Harry: "Do you believe him?" Rita: "Wouldn't be here if I did. The point is, it's not the first time he's done his best to come between me and a fella and it won't be the last. If I spend time with him in London and he starts again, I'll more than likely end up DOING time." Harry: "Why do you put up with him?" Rita: "Because he's an idiot." Harry: "I'll agree with you there." Rita: "So? Any problem with Alec coming round?" Harry: "No." Rita: "Good." Harry: "It's getting late and I have a long drive in the morning. Coming to bed?" Rita: "Not yet. There's summat I want to watch on telly." Harry: "Avoiding the inevitable?" Rita: "Would you blame me if I was?" Harry: "No. I'll go up then. Goodnight." Rita: "Night, Harry."
He felt her freeze as he kissed her forehead then went upstairs. Rita would've preferred to sleep on the sofa, but knew if she didn't share Harry's bed now, it would be much harder when he returned, which would probably lead to more rows. She sat there chain smoking until it was gone two, plucking up the courage to lie next to him. Her feelings were divided. On the one hand, she hated him for what he'd done to her. On the other she still loved him and promised Terry she'd look after him and his sister when all she wanted to do was run. She took a deep breath and made her way up the stairs, turning off the lights behind her. She looked at Harry snoring and could have easily stuck a knife in his throat to shut him up. She picked up her pyjamas and dressing gown and took them to the bathroom where she was promptly sick, thinking about what a bastard he really was. She washed the make-up off and stared at her reflection. A tear rolled down her cheek and she wiped it away.
Rita: "Don't weaken now, Littlewood, or you really will be finished. Think of Terry and Gail. You mustn't let him win."
She brushed her teeth, changed and returned to the bedroom. She just stared at him for a while and hoped he'd stay asleep and not try anything before gritting her teeth and getting in the bed. She kept as close to the edge as possible without falling on the floor, turned the bedside light out but was afraid to close her eyes. After she didn't know how long, she felt his arm drape across her and she stiffened. He was still snoring, which she was glad about, but daren't move it in case he woke up. Whe the alarm went off at five, she breathed easier when he moved and closed her eyes, pretending to be asleep. Harry hit the alarm, turned on the light, squinted, then looked at Rita's back when his eyes were accustomed to the brightness. He got out of bed and got himself ready to go. When she heard the car start and drive off, she cried with relief and dozed a while before the kids woke her. After she got the kids fed and off to school, she went back to bed and slept badly until about one in the afternoon. She was so down but remembered she had to see Alec about work. She changed her mind about asking him over, and decided to go to him instead as she wanted to get out of the house. Alec was surprised to see her.
Alec: "Rita! Come in. It's so good to see you."
Rita entered his flat, hands firmly in her coat pockets to prevent her from lashing out at him to wipe that annoying grin off his face, and remained emotionless
Alec: "Take your coat off and make yourself comfortable." Rita: "I'm not stopping long." Alec: "Oh. Tea?" Rita: "No, thanks." Alec: "Is it my imagination or are those trousers you're wearing?" Rita: "Trousers? Why?" Alec: "Oh, nothing. Just never seen you in them in all the years we've known each other." Rita: "Fancied a change. Anything wrong with that?" Alec: "No. So, how are you?" Rita: "How do you think?" Alec: "Yes." Rita: "I haven't come here for idle chat, Gilroy. I want to talk about work." Alec: "Ah, yes, of course. Well, I told them at the Gatsby you were under the weather." Rita: "One way of putting it. And?" Alec: "You can go back any time you're up to it." Rita: "Tonight?" Alec: "Tonight? That's a bit soon, isn't it?" Rita: "Is there a problem? I take it I do still HAVE a booking there." Alec: "Course you do. It's just that they've got a stand-in for you. But I suppose tomorrow will be fine. I'll see to it." Rita: "Good. I'll be off then." Alec: "Rita." Rita: "What?" Alec: "I couldn't help noticing you're not your usual cheery self. Is anything wrong?" Rita: "Do you really expect me to be cracking jokes and being the life and soul after the other night?" Alec: "I suppose not. Was it really bad after I left?" Rita: "'LEFT'?! You abandoned me, Gilroy!" Alec: "I didn't exactly abandon you, Rita." Rita: "No? What would you call it, then? For the first time in my life I really needed you. You saw what Harry was doing to me. And what did you do? Thought of saving your own skin as usual. He told you to go, and you did." Alec: "What was I supposed to do?" Rita: "Helped me!" Alec: "Hey, he had a go at me too if you remember." Rita: "That was nothing compared with what he did to me when you'd hopped it." Alec: "What did he do, Rita?" Rita: "Never you mind. The point is, he wouldn't if you'd been there." Alec: "What was I supposed to do, eh? You made it perfectly clear more than once I mustn't interfere." Rita: "That's different." Alec: "I don't see how." Rita: "Sticking your nose in is one thing. But standing by while he smacked me around then leaving him to do his worst is another." Alec: "His worst? Rita?" Rita: "I'll never forgive you for that, Gilroy. Never. As long as I live, I'll always remember you running away." Alec: "What did he do, Rita?" Rita: "You should count yourself lucky I'm still on your books after that." Alec: "Will you answer me, Rita?" Rita: "I could easily find another agent who WILL look after my welfare." Alec: "I'll ask again. What did he do?" Rita: "What do you care?" Alec: "I care a lot for you, Rita, as well you know." Rita: "You had your chance to prove it, didn't you? You'll not get another. Think the bruises have gone, do you? Well, they haven't. They're covered up." Alec: "Stop changing the subject." Rita: "Then stop asking the same stupid question." Alec: "I want to know. And I'll keep asking until I get an answer." Rita: "It's none of your business." Alec: "I have a right to know." Rita: "You have no rights, Gilroy." Alec: "Rita-" Rita: "Just leave it! It's done and I'd rather forget about it."
He could see she was getting upset. He had a fair idea what happened and wanted more than anything to be wrong. He went to her and touched her arm.
Alec: "Rita-"
She stood and rounded on him.
Rita: "Don't you dare touch me! Don't ever touch me again!" Alec: "Rita."
The tears started to flow and she turned away as she broke down. He knew then he was right and his heart broke seeing her suffering so much. He felt sick at the thought of what she'd been through and guilty about being such a coward. He went to comfort her but she shrugged him off. He wasn't going to give up.
Alec: "Oh, Rita. I'm so sorry." Rita: "Everyone's sorr, but it changes nothing." Alec: "Come here." Rita: "Leave me alone." Alec: "I'm not going to hurt you." Rita: "I thought that about Harry. I was wrong there, wasn't I?" Alec: "I'm not him. You know I'm nothing like him. Try my luck, fair enough. But I'd never make you do anything you didn't want to." Rita: "Oh, Alec. My life's such a mess."
He tried again to put his arms around her. He felt her flinch but turned round and held him tightly while he held her gently and felt his neck getting wet from her tears and running nose. He felt like crying himself but knew he needed to be strong for her. When they broke apart, he pulled a handkerchief out of his pocket and handed it to her.
Alec: "Come on. Sit down. I bet you could do with a drink. I know I could." Rita: "Not for me, Alec. You go ahead." (sits) Alec: "No. I need a clear head." (sits) "You're right. It is my fault." Rita: "Neither of us expected something like this to happen." Alec: "No. Where is he now?" Rita: "Gone back to his job. Won't be back for two months." Alec: "I hope you've left him, Rita." Rita: "I did." Alec: "Good." Rita: "But I've gone back." Alec: "What?! Why?" Rita: "I still love him." Alec: "You can't do!" Rita: "I do. But that's not the reason. It's the kids." Alec: "They're not your responsibility, Rita." Rita: "They are. I've got very close to them, Alec. Terry even came to Blackpool to beg me to go home." Alec: "You should've said no." Rita: "I intended to. The last thing I wanted was to be anywhere near that bastard after what he did. Still don't. But he was taking it out on them. I couldn't let him do that, Alec." Alec: "You've let them trap you." Rita: "In a way." Alec: "You'll be stuck with him for the rest of your life." Rita: "Maybe. But I won't make it easy for him. And I won't let him beat those kids to a pulp. If he's got to hit anyone, I'd rather it were me. I can fight back. They can't." Alec: "You didn't put up much of a fight the other day." Rita: "Cheers, Alec(!)" Alec: "You know what I mean." Rita: "Yes, I do. Only too well. That was fighting dirty. As low as anyone can get. I know what he's capable of now, so he'll not do anything like that again to me." Alec: "You're a fool, Rita." Rita: "I know." Alec: "A brave fool. But a fool all the same." Rita: "Those kids need love, Alec. They don't get a lot from him. Don't get me wrong. He does love them. But they need someone they can turn to and trust. Who they know won't hurt them. They could end up emotionally scarred for life and get into all sorts of trouble without stability in their lives." Alec: "No guarantees they won't anyway." Rita: "No. I'm going to have a damn good try." Alec: "Good luck." Rita: "I'll need it. And I need work." Alec: "Are you sure it's not too soon?" Rita: "What do you mean?" Alec: "You've just been through a terrible ordeal." Rita: "Don't want me cracking up on stage, huh?" Alec: "Something like that." Rita: "If I don't get back to it soon, I may never be able to. Besides, the Rita Littlewood the public see is completely different to the real one. It gives me something to focus on for a while. Showbusiness is all about putting on a front, Alec. And as you know, that's second nature to me by now." Alec: "Well, if you're sure." Rita: "I wouldn't be here if I wasn't." Alec: "London's still available." Rita: "No." Alec: "Give you a chance to get right away from him." Rita: "No, Alec. I have to have local work near Terry and Gail. I need to protect them." Alec: "I'll see what I can do." Rita: "I know the Gatsby booking's coming to an end." Alec: "Another couple of weeks." Rita: "No dancing. That'll cause no end of trouble." Alec: "You mustn't let him frighten you, Rita." Rita: "I'm not. I'm just trying to avoid any unpleasantness." Alec: "Okay. No dancing." Rita: "Thanks. I'd best be off." Alec: "Will you be all right?" Rita: "Better with him out the way." Alec: "What about when he's back?" Rita: "I'll have to be. Though deep down, I'm hoping he'll meet someone else." Alec: "You just look after yourself." Rita: "I usually do. You know me, Alec. Tough as old boots. Been through worse and always bounced back." Alec: "Yeah. I can give you a lift if you like." Rita: "Thanks, but no. I'm not having him make me afraid to walk the streets. You'll let me know about work?" Alec: "Yeah." Rita: "Ring me." Alec: "I will. Take care." Rita: "I'll do me best. See you." Alec: "Bye, Rita."
He let her out then poured himself a large Irish to take away the unpleasant taste.

Part 14
Rita went back to work and was a bundle of nerves, wondering if she'd be able to get through it. Once she started, she was fine and Alec was proud of her. He got her more work and she got closer to Terry and Gail, especially Terry.
The day arrived they'd both been dreading; Harry's return. Gail was the only one excited about it but she'd never been on the receiving end of anything more than a couple of slaps. Although they'd spoken on the phone often, Rita preferred him so far away and hoped he wasn't expecting everything to be back to normal. Gail was playing in her room, while Rita and Terry sat nervously in the living room.
Terry: "If he tries to hurt you, I'll stop him." Rita: "I don't want you to risk it, love. I'll be fine." Terry: "It's been great without him around." Rita: "I know. Says a lot, doesn't it?" Terry: "I'll look after you." Rita: "You shouldn't need to. I'll be okay." Terry: "If it wasn't for us, you'd not have come back." Rita: "Well I am back."
They heard a car and Gail ran down the stairs.
Rita: "And so is yer dad. Let's get this over with, eh?" Terry: "Got no choice." Gail: "Daddy!" Harry: "Hello, sweetheart. It's so good to see you."
He lifted her up and carried her into the living room where Rita and Terry were standing rigidly. He put Gail down.
Harry: "Hello, son. Rita." Terry: "Nice to have you back, dad." Harry: "Nice to be back. Rita?" Rita: "Work go well?" Harry: "Yeah. Got a nice bonus too. Oh, I got you something." Rita: "You shouldn't have bothered." Harry: "I wanted to. Just a minute."
He went back in the hall and returned with a bunch of flowers and a box. He crossed to Rita and handed them to her.
Terry: "Come on, Gail. Let's go and play with your dolls." Gail: "I want to stay with daddy." Harry: "I'll be up in a minute. You go with your brother."
This was the moment Rita hoped wouldn't happen and inwardly cursed Terry for making sure she was alone with Harry. But knew at the first scream, he'd be back down.
Harry: "Don't worry, Rita. I haven't forgotten what you said before I went away." Rita: "Good." Harry: "Thought I had, didn't you?" Rita: "I don't know what to think with you, Harry. Honestly, I don't." Harry: "I hurt you really badly. I didn't mean to. So you have every right to behave the way you are." Rita: "Glad you see it that way." Harry: "Well? Aren't you going to open it?" Rita: "If you're trying to buy your way out of it-" Harry: "I'm not. I realise it'll take more than that to make up for everything." Rita: "Too right it will."
She sighed and opened the box, revealing a solid gold bangle. She didn't know whether to be touched or throw it at him.
Harry: "I had it engraved too." Rita: "That means I'll have trouble selling it. Joke." Harry: "I hope so. Let me put it on you."
She was a mix of emotions as he picked up the jewellery and put it on her wrist. She wanted himb but couldn't contemplate it at that time.
Harry: "It's real gold, you know. No cheap stuff from the market." Rita: "It must've cost quite a bit." Harry: "It did. But I love you, Rita." Rita: "I know you do." Harry: "Do you still love me?" Rita: "Course I do." Harry: "I wouldn't blame you if you'd gone off me." Rita: "I love you, Harry. And thank you for this and the flowers." Harry: "My pleasure."
She knew he was expecting more than words to show she liked what he'd given her so forced herself to kiss him. He pulled her back and kissed her tenderly like he used to, which made her momentarily forget the past couple of months as she threw her arms around him. When he started putting his hands where she didn't want him to, she came to her senses and pulled away.
Rita: "No, Harry." Harry: "I was coming on a bit heavy." Rita: "What? No yelling at me? Making demands." Harry: "No, Rita. I'll go at your pace." Rita: "Oh, Harry. Don't think I don't want you because I do. I'm just not ready yet." Harry: "Fine. You make the first move when you are. I'm hungry. What's there to eat?
Harry went to the kitchen while Rita sat slowly, completely stunned he was being so understanding. Though she had a niggling thought he had an ulterior motive and would try something. He didn't. For weeks he kept his distance as their relationship got back onto some sort of track. When Rita was ready to resume that side of things, she knocked back several drinks first to give her courage, but he was gentle and tender with her which she never expected. She loved and wanted Harry, but could never be sure what he'd do when he got angry, which soured her feelings for him slightly. She carried on living with Harry and raising his kids as well as working when she wasn't too battered to move. She grudgingly accepted her lot until the day she met Terry's teacher, Ken Barlow, and her life began to change forever. But in all those years and for the rest of her life, she never did forgive Alec.
The End
