At one time there was no one better at doing villians than the Corrie writers from the 60`s - 90`s. But lately it`s becoming laughable. And not in a funny way either. Take David Platt for example. In 2000 or so when they changed his character, he used to be a laughable cheeky scamp. Now they`ve turned him into a sneering, arrogant, swaggering bully who is capable of anything - even murder. Charlie Stubbs was a classic villian and he got his just desserts in the end...as did Alan Bradley, Richard Hillman, and others. Even those villians had some redeaming qualities that hid their true self from others. But as far as I can tell, David Platt has no redeaming qualities whatsoever...unless you can count his so called charm who can twist his mother and his Gran around his twisted little finger. So where do the writers plan on taking the character of David Platt? He can`t do a sudden U turn and become nicey nicey again - it wouldn`t be believable. Yet he can`t play the arrogant lil bastard much more either. The only thing I can think of is to either send him to borstal for a few months or to Martins for a year or so. David cannot get away with this sort of behaviour anymore and make it believable. Sure Jack P Shepherd is a great actor, but he can`t be a one trick pony for long without it becoming tedious. One suggestion I have is to make David and Devs daughter Amber a couple. If anyone can turn Davids life around then it could be Amber. And I`m sure there will be many street residents who would be happy to shove their fists down Davids throat if he should treat Amber shabbily.

Agreed. But then Alan Bradley was the first REAL villain in their rivalry with EE. Before that it was bad boys and girls but even with Alan up to Richard the whole show didn't revolve around them like it has from Richard. It gets boring when they're the centre of attention while others are underwritten and ignored. Dallas has a lot to answer for as well. We didn't need bitches. Characters could be bitchy but still likeable. Look at Ena Sharples. LOL! This is where they all go wrong. There's no longevity with this type of character. Yes they need their comeuppance but they just take forever to get there so, as you say, it becomes tedious. Look at Charlie and Shelley. On and on and on and on with repetitive dialogue. They knew people were sick of it but it continued. Same with the Who Killed Tom King in Emmerdale. Viewers stop caring.
Again it's the old chestnut of too many eps. Alan Bradley was in it nearly 4 years and was made a villain in 1988. But it as never dull. Constant twists and turns and he wasn't the focus of every ep. Also with less eps they could easily skip days. Now it's real time.
All the while Corrie continues the same amount of eps with the same formula of boring baddies and bitches (which we've seen upteen times already) I really cannot see myself ever watching again properly. I'm just bored with it all.

I didn't watch any soaps for a very long time - 4 years or more. Then one time out in Spain I was staying with someone who got the omnibus recorded, it was at the time of the Richard Hillman and Audrey fiasco. It peaked my interest and I started to watch again - I don't suppose for 1 moment that I'm the only person this has happened to and maybe the writers are aware of this sort of thing and see this as a way to bring in new viewers - so villains do serve some purpose. I came in towards the end of that saga so the bore factor didn't apply. But we all know the hype attracts - I remember all the hoo-ha about Deidre going to jail but that was during the time I wasn't watching. It didn't tempt me to watch but it was discussed by the men in the office non-stop. At the end of the day if the ratings fall the villain gets killed off.

Yes. Hype gets viewers but how many actually stay? I often dipped in and out of EE and Emmerdale when there was a major story but it wasn't enough to maintain my interest. I got back into Emmerdale in 2001 and became a long-term viewer of EE from 2005. Now I don't watch Emmerdale again. I read all these spoilers and nothing is enough to entice me back to Corrie. The thing is though you don't need this type of storyline to get viewers. My mum originally began watching Corrie because of Val Barlow's death. But this type is all the do these days.

Every soap has got to have his villian to some degree. But when there`s a villian like David who puts the blame on everyone but him for his wrong doings - that`s what ticks me off. He seems to be getting away with everything he`s ever done....burning his exam paper - no concequence. Getting arrested by the police - a police caution. Gail kicking him out - Audrey taken him in. Being malicious in sending Todd a wedding invite - nothing. See the pattern here? Fer gawds sake writers. Either make him a good kid or a real bad seed where he`ll get sent to jail. This storyline is getting redicilous.

Yep. They go on and on and on and on and there's just no way back for them. Funny too how amnesia strikes a lot in soapland. Reet became friendly with Cilla after what she'd put her through which just wouldn't happen. Everyone all seemed to forgive Charlie after the way he treated Shelley. That wouldn't happen either.

The only villian I didn't like much on corrie was Frank Foster, especially what he did to Carla.

So do I PQ, Every good villian needs their comeuppace - and Kirsty is long overdue for hers. As brilliant as an actress she is, Kirsty needs to be either 6 feet under or in a jail cell soon..

Yes , I agree that something should happen soon, but Kirsty has surely been the most REALISTIC and totally convincing villain Corrie have had in ages...if not of all time?

I agree Kirsty was excellent and so pleased Natalie got recognition at the soap awards!
However Karl is a terrible villan IMO - such an annoying character, really rubbish!

I agree - he's pathetic.
The sooner he's found out, the better.
...and yes, Natalie's award was really well deserved - nice that the awards do OCCASIONALLY go to the right person.

Dallas has a LOT to answer for. It's all boring - baddies and bitches. There's nothing new they can do.

Yeah. Like we care! The worst are the "Whodunnits", where they make so many enemies. Done to death in the 80s. Brookie made it popular, EE and others copied whereas Dallas would reuse it out of desperation.

Key cutting and shoe repairs - in your area!!
It's a pretty clever idea really, for a company to post unofficial adverts posing as posts on a message board, or social networking site, and get free advertising. If I ever set up a company I'll definitely adopt that tactic ;D
Kind of annoying for those people who don't want to read about commercial crap, though.
