Ciaran: Bashed bobby
No brotherly love for Ciaran
by Derek Robins
The Bill actor Ciaran Griffiths says he was left black and blue by fight scenes with his screen brother Iain McKee.
Griffiths, 21, who plays PC Gary Best in the ITV1 drama, explains: "Gary has gone undercover to discover what criminal activities his estranged brother Joe has been up to and as a result they have a few punch-ups.
"We did a lot of stunts for the plot and at the end of every day we'd be left battered and bruised and I'd be reeling from the slaps I got!"
But the genial Mancunian is unruffled: "I am well chuffed about how things have gone since I joined the show two years ago. The current plot is my biggest plot apart from the live episodes we filmed last year."
In fact, he suggested the plot in which Best comes to blows with Joe. Griffiths explains: "The writers thought it was a really good idea and I'm very pleased it was taken up."
The story reaches a climax on July 14 when Joe double crosses a gang of drug dealers and three murders result before a bloody showdown. Meanwhile Gary shows his brotherly love by sleeping with Joe's battered girlfriend Elaine.
Keen Manchester United fan Griffiths wasn't over the moon when he discovered Best supported their hated rivals Manchester City.
He says: "People have had a big laugh about it as I've always supported United. It's a bit of a cruel joke. The shame is that I live in London now and I can't get back to Old Trafford to see United much as the filming schedules are so hectic.
"It also means I don't see much of my parents or my brother and sister."
He will have to stay out of the sun during a well-earned break in Cuba: "I'm not allowed to get a tan because of my part in the show. The good thing is that I'm the type of person who can't really sit still. I like to be doing stuff so I will do plenty of snorkelling and I'm planning to visit Havana."
Griffiths had a brief taste of fame when he played robber Dean Sykes who was shot dead by police during a supermarket siege in 2000. He says: "I was only in two episodes of Corrie and then I did the film There's Only One Jimmy Grimble while I was studying for my A-levels.
"I also did an episode of Clocking Off but before I got The Bill I was doing odd jobs such as working as a barman and sweeping up and making tea at my mate's hairdressing salon."
He will be a regular face in The Bill for at least another 12 months: "I'm happy that I will be in the show for another year. It means a lot of security."
His audition to join Sun Hill's ranks didn't go smoothly. He missed the train he planned to get to studio and sprinted from the station. Arriving puffing and sweating, he could hardly get a word out but producers were so impressed he got the part of Best.
