From TV PlusHeartbeats longest serving four legged friend Alfred the dog is being killed off after thirteen years. The Lurcher pet, first of Greengrass and now David, has been in the show since episode one. The makers have decided 'Boots' thirteen, the third dog to play him, is too frail for the gruelling filming schedules. Bosses expect a strong reaction when he is killed off. ITV chief Keith Richardson said " At one time, in the 90s, Alfred was getting more fan male than Bill Maynard ( Greengrass ) Three different dogs have played Alfred. Tramp, Rosie, and Boots. David Stockwell, who plays 'David' said "Filming is tough on the dogs, as we do scenes on the moors. When they get old they suffer, he's thirteen now and wants a nice warm studio. Its a very tearful ending for Alfred and David " Heartbeat will be getting a new canine star, a pedigree Italian Spinone, whose real name is 'Jaffa' and lives locally. She looks like a mongrel, but is pedigree and very large.!! She will be called 'Deefor' ( D for dog presumably ) Oh poor Alfred. RIP. I'll miss him. Who can forget his various Christmas appearances, as a reindeer, wearing antlers and a red jacket.
