From the Mirror:
KILL OFF THE TEAM ..THEN LYNCH 'EM!
6 August 2005
PICTURE the scene - you are the boss of a Sky One footballing soap about to start a ninth series. But your Dream Team has become something of a nightmare...
Ratings aren't what they used to be and critics aren't particularly enthusiastic about the show. In fact, the Dream may well be over if you can't inject a bit of excitement into it.
So what do you do?
Well, the brains behind Dream Team aren't shy of playing dirty. In a bit of foul play off the pitch, they are giving the entire Harchester United squad the boot and drafting in a brand new one.
And if that isn't enough to get you all fired up for the start of the new season, they've also signed former Boyzone star Shane Lynch as a manager. Sadly, the unwanted players aren't just on a a free transfer - they are being sent to the great training ground in the sky.
Series eight's cliffhanger ending left viewers suspecting that a couple of players had gone to meet their makers.
But when the new run starts in October, they'll discover the shocking truth - the whole team are resting in peace, after a car crashed into the players' coach.
It might seem drastic to get rid of your entire cast and start afresh, but Sky One bosses are keen to revive the show's fortunes.
When Dream Team premiered in 1997 the ups and downs of fictitious Premiership club Harchester United proved a big hit.
On May 20, 1999, a Dream Team series finale was instrumental in giving Sky One its biggest ever audience share - 7.1 per cent of viewers, compared to 6.5 per cent on C4 and 3.4 per cent on Five.
The special hour-long episode - which saw Harchester United competing with Manchester United in the FA Cup Final at Wembley - peaked at 756,000 viewers, a 10.1 per cent share of the audience. But this high has yet to be repeated.
So no wonder bosses are pulling out all the stops to give the show fresh legs - hopefully with the chance of winning some more silverware.
