Trivia: Dr Who
Exploring time and space in the famous battered police box, Doctor Who entertained a global audience. Learn some lesser-known facts about the Time Lord and his adventures.
Dark beginnings
Screen veteran William Hartnell played the first Doctor. The first incarnation of the Time Lord was far less cosy than future Doctors, and in the early days was something of an anti-hero. In early stories such as The Daleks, he would place his companions in jeopardy for the sake of his curiosity.
Turning down Who
Sir Michael Hordern was asked if he wanted to be the first Doctor, but declined, feeling he was too distinguished an actor for the part. When William Hartnell retired, Ron Moody (of Oliver fame) was short listed to replace him - but he wasn't keen, thinking the role would hamper his stage and screen career.
It's bigger on the inside
The third story, Inside the Spaceship, is the only one to take place entirely inside the TARDIS and to feature no-one other than the regular cast. This cheap two-parter was a filler while the makers waited for the show to be re-commissioned.
Come Daleking
The Daleks were inspired by HG Wells's Time Machine, with Wells's Morlocks and Eloi becoming Terry Nation's Daleks and Thals. The shape of the Daleks was the work of designer Ray Cusick, from a description in Nation's script. Nation had seen the Georgian State Dancers and was impressed by the gliding motion of the long-skirted ballerinas.
Sympathy for the Sea Devil
The location scenes for the Tom Baker story Seeds of Doom were shot at a house owned by Mick Jagger in Athelhampton, Dorset. One of his other abodes, Stargroves, near Newbury in Hampshire, was used as a location for Pyramids of Mars.
Signing off
Peter Davison originally signed to do two seasons of Doctor Who and then agreed to do a third. While making his second season, which he wasn't happy with, he was asked to do a fourth but declined. He was a lot happier with his third season, which he felt had stronger writing, but by then Colin Baker had been cast for the next season.
Sticky back plastic
Most fans know that many of the special effects were done inexpensively. But how exactly? Well, examples include a monster in The Mind of Evil that was made out of noodles covered in washing-up liquid, and the legendary giant maggots in The Green Death, were inflated contraceptives!

LOL! Few mistakes on there! Image of the Fendahl and Pyramids of Mars were filmed at Mick Jagger's house. He never owned Athelhampton. Ron Moody was suggested to be the 3rd Doctor. Don't remember reading he was a candidate for 2nd.
