Apart from one or two little gripes like the plug and the fact the headphones suddenly vanished off the kids head' this has got to be the best ep so far since they brought it back and that's down to the inclusion of SJS and K9. I cried when the school blew up! I'd never have watched RTD's version ever again if they were cruel enough to murder K9!!!! So glad K9 Mk IV was there at the end. ;D

[Sharp intake of breath, followed by floor hitting the ground...] I am shocked. I was dreading reading this thread and have been putting it off since I got on here, as I was too weak to get into a "discussion" about how good tonights episode was, with you totally disagreeing! I am amazed that you actually liked it. One point of major importance is that it is the first episode of the new series NOT to be written by Russell T. Davies!!! And it is the best so far! Typical. Can he just stick his head back down the Welsh mine it came from? Back to the episode and I loved Sarah Jane! She was brilliant, and I would love if she appeared in the Doctor Who realm once again, maybe in Torchwood. She was my favourite guest star in a good while. And I loved her witty lines. Anthony Head was also brilliant, and I get the feeling that he might be back (they did bring a Slitherin back after all). The Crym-thingy's were pretty bad though - mainly because they were so similar to the winged creatures that appeared in the episode with Rose's father last year. Mickey was surprisingly good as well. He and Jackie usually get in the way a lot of the time, so it was nice that he played such a good part. I loved the way he was the investigator back on earth. And the line about the two "Smith's" at the end was funny. Maybe there will be a spin-off with SJ and Mickey, investigating the paranormal? You never know. What to make of his decision to go with Rose and the Doctor though? A big surprise, although I am glad that the Tardis is getting more packed these days. Rose was good as well, and the jealous side of the character RTD bleated on about for so long on DW: Confidential was actually good. I was intrigued to see how she would react as she got such a good insight into her future. This was also the first week I thought that David Tennant was really, really strong as the Doctor and that I really, really liked him. The reunion with SJ was brilliant, and even though I didn't see the episode all those years ago in which he left her back in Aberdeen, I was still very interested. I had expected that if the past was talked about that my concentration would drift. Can Toby Whithouse write every episode please?

Really enjoyed last nights episode as well - I liked Sarah Jane - nice to meet another of the Doctors assistants. I dont like Mickey travelling with them though - I prefer it when its just the Doctor and Rose.
OMG we are all in agreement - a first surely?

I'll have to disagree with you three on this one I'm afraid.
Plotwise I felt this episode was rather a let-down. We had Mickey hacking into classified information again (as you do) although he could only get so far before his access was denied by Torchwood. {They are slipping those references in there aren't they)??
We had Rose as the only human dinner lady in the school who witnesses the other dinner ladies wearing surgical gloves and masks. Now I know that school dinner have somewhat of a reputation for being lethal but that's hardly normal behaviour. As if anyone would have been acting like that with Rose around. The scene would have worked much better if Rose or Sarah Jane had actually seen the whole thing & the dinner ladies hadn't known that they'd been observed. The whole exchange between the head dinner lady & Rose was just crap.
The bat creatures looked good, but, for me, they were just too reminiscent of the creatures that attacked the church in the Season One story "Father's Day".
The ending with a new, rebuilt K9 left for SJS was also a bit too sugary sweet for my liking.
On the upside, it was good to see Elisabeth Sladen reprising her role as Sarah Jane Smith. It's hard to believe that she left the programme almost 30 years ago & made her last appearance 23 years ago in 1983's "The Five Doctors". The initials scenes with the tension between her & Rose were good as was the scene with The Doctor & SJS in the cafe & later SJS telling the Doctor why he couldn't accept the offer to be a 'God'.
But overall less good than "New Earth" and "Tooth & Claw" for me.

Oh well never mind Eileen - I knew it would be too good to be true that we all agreed!

I quite enjoyed it..only because it was good to see Sarah Jane again..K9 always irritated me..and he wasn't really practical trundling around......they seem to have forgotten that The Doc and Sarah Jane met up again in the five Doctors..why didn't she have all that out with him then.
I quite like to see the TARDIS arrive at their destination..and the assistants say 'Oh my God Doctor where are we'

I did get annoyed at the implication SJS and the Doctor were in love. RTD is obsessed with Dr Sex even though he completely rules any hanky pank out there's far too many inclusions of snogging and love hints since it was brought back! But why would the Doctor go back for SJS? That was just stupid. She herself threatened to leave in the first place and had even packed! If there was any chance of him returning he'd have told her to leave her stuff and he'd pick her up afterwards. That bit really annoyed me. It was also guff about not mentioning previous assistants. Jo was mentioned in Planet of the Spiders.
I d agree with you, Eileen, about those bat monsters. They seem to be recycling ideas even quicker than the original series!
I loved that ending with K9 IV. They couldn't leave it like that with K9 III dead. Noooooooo!!!! Seeing as RTD has blown up Gallifrey then already K9 I has been destroyed. K9 II will still be with Romana somewhere.
One thing that is really pissing me off about this series are the now obligatory references to Torchwood. Last year it was Bad Wolf. Torchwood has obviously replaced UNIT and makes a mockery of everything in the original series and the last one.
Great to see Lis on TV again. And John Leeson's voice hasn't changed much at all. It was just like hearing K9 all those years ago. He was always the voice. David Brierley was pants. And Lalla Ward hates the fact he says he was the voice of K9 because as far as she's concerned it's always John.

Nick, did you read the Lis interview in the latest DWM? She laughs at the script directions for K9 and apparently he was as much of a problem as he's always been.
I like that idea too. Never mind the randomiser the Doctor fitted after The Key To Time. It was always erratic before his exile and I liked that too. Gave more of a mystery to it.

I have noticed a lot of heavy plugs coming in for 'Torchwood' And I have been reading a lot of complaining letters in the press etc about the fact Doctor Who seems Earthbound.

I'm fed up with that. Nothing has really changed from the last series, has it? It was different wit the first few years of the Pertwee era because the Doctor was exiled. But as soon as he got forgiven by the Time Lords they went all over the place. Even in the 60s I liked the more historical ones on Earth. None of them having someone like Queen Victoria for the sake of it. Pity too many of those were destroyed.

LOL! Yes. Not forgetting Torchwood bog roll so people can wipe their bums on Captain Jack's grinning face! So much for not having a recurring theme during this series. Patsy

As i have said before I quite like it when the Doc has more than one assistant..and I would rather have him travelling in the TARDIS with the Doc & Rose than keep coming back to Earth to see him all the time...but like Patsy says he's going soon so.....

Is he leaving for good? I've heard that in other places too. He said himself in an interview that he is in it for six episodes (just one short of half the series!) this series. He said he does play a much bigger part though.
I actually think that it is more fun when there are more than just the Doc and Rose travelling. I don't really like the whole will they/won't they? thing. It just takes a lot away from the show. It is about sci-fi and time travel, not Rose and the Doctor's relationship.
Looking forward to this Saturday night's episode though - with a side we've never seen to the Doctor before emerging.

I think so. I can't remember if it said he gets killed though but it's in one of the Ironman - I mean, Cybermen episodes. Going by what was on Teletext, it's looking like RTD has ripped off The Invasion now!
