It launches Sunday, October 22nd at 9pm on BBC3 with a special double episode. A repeat then follows on BBC2 Wednesday nights at 9pm.
Here's the official BBC despcription:
John Barrowman, Eve Myles, Indira Varma, Burn Gorman, Naoko Mori and Gareth David-Lloyd star in this action-packed, adrenalin-fuelled new series for BBC Three.
Created by award-winning writer Russell T Davies, the high-octane sci-fi thriller follows a team of modern-day investigators as they use alien technology to solve crime both alien and human.
Separate from the Government, outside police jurisdiction and beyond the United Nations, the Torchwood Institute sets its own rules. Based in Cardiff, the Torchwood team delves into the unknown, battling against the impossible in a highly volatile underworld of savage aliens and monsters whilst trying to maintain their everyday lives.
Enigmatic Captain Jack Harkness is the ever-watchful leader of the Torchwood team. Gwen Cooper is initially an outsider, whose first, chance meeting with Torchwood at the scene of a brutal murder sparks within her a burning curiosity to get to the truth. She is intrigued by Torchwood and her life changes when she is catapulted into an unfamiliar and exciting world.
Second in command to Captain Jack is Suzie Costello, the hard-working hardware specialist who catalogues and strives to understand the alien devices the team comes across. Owen Harper is the arrogant, brilliant medic and Toshiko Sato specialises in all things computer, surveillance and technical. Ianto Jones, meanwhile, cleans up after the team and gets them everywhere on time.
Torchwood is written by Russell T Davies and Chris Chibnall, with contributing writers including Peter J Hammond, Toby Whithouse, Noel Clarke, Cath Tregenna, Jacquetta May and Helen Raynor.
The executive producers are Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner. Torchwood is filmed in HD (high definition).
Captain Jack Harkness is played by John Barrowman, Suzie Costello by Indira Varma, Gwen Cooper by Eve Myles, Owen Harper by Burn Gorman, Toshiko Sato by Naoko Mori and Ianto Jones by Gareth David-Lloyd.

Also only two episodes in the series will be written by our favourite writer - RTD. And rumour has it there is plenty of swearing and gay kissing in the first episode.

According to Dr Who Magazine ep 1 is meant to be on BBC1 simultaneously with the next ep on BBC3 afterwards. Is that wrong? I'm not bothering. I just don't care after all those mentions during the last series.

I read that the viewing figures were one of the highest for BBC3.
It will probably get a great deal more when it is shown on BBC2.

I'm still not watching. But as always it will be interesting to see what ones after get. By all accounts the 2nd ep immediately afterwards lost some viewers.

Watched both episodes.
The first one was mainly an "introduce you to the setup" type story but I thought that that was quite well done, although quite how Captain Jack has gotten to be in charge when nobody knows anything about him is a bit of a mystery!
Episode 2 was, of course, the first 'proper' story ie: we'd already met the Torchwood team & knew what they were about. The idea of an alien hooked on the energy released during orgasm was certainly different & it certainly gave the team a major reason for including a fair amount of kissing. Not too sure about seeing a naked Owen though although I thought the "I bet you feel a bit of a cock" line was funny.

Wasn't there a comment on Ceefax or somewhere saying it ripped off a Buffy episode?

I liked both episodes mostly, the only bits I wasn't too sure about were the gay kiss and then the lesbian kiss. It seemed so contirved - purely to add a little scandal to the whole thing. But everything else was pretty good. Not a brilliant, brilliant show - but entertaining and a damn sight better than anything else that's on Sunday nights. I'm sure it will grow on me as the series continues. And Captain Jack definitely has the "matinee idol" thing down to a tee.
I'd say it will do fairly well on BBC3. Apparently, it got the third highest audience ever (only beat by two sporting events - so technically the highest). Admitidley it wasn't all that original, but it was still fairly well written. And plus RTD is only writing two episodes of this series - so that's always a good thing in my book.

I was in two minds whether to watch this or not. But I'm glad that I did.
I found it very enjoyable, and will definitely watch the rest.
I loved the comment by one of the characters in the first episode referring to CSI: Cardiff.
And on the plus side, it will be keeping a lot of Welsh actors in work. ;D ;D

Wasn't there a comment on Ceefax or somewhere saying it ripped off a Buffy episode? Patsy There was a comment. I think they said Angel? However they are wrong. If Torchwood ripped it off Angel, then Angel ripped it off heaven knows. It is a concept that has been done before Angel was conceived most notably in the movie Species.

Russell T Davies plans to take over the world with Welsh people... didn't you know LOL, not a truer word was spoken - no offence to the Welsh, my sister is Welsh. In fairness it was a lot better than I thought it was going to be and didn't turn into a Welsh propaganda excercise which it appeared to be in that Doctor Who Confidential special on it. It did explain away why it wasn't set in London as it had been in DW and it made sense there were branches all over the place, so it was focusing on the Cardiff branch. The main weakness was where did Captain Jack come from? I missed the first minute of the pilot but judging from Eileen Grimshaw's comments this was not explained. Also I want to know who saved him from the future? Last thing I remember about him is Rose and Doctor deserting him in time and space. The production values seem to be high and the cast seems to be quite interesting. I found the first episode a bit bitty and all over the place but then that is probably down to the fact it was setting the scene and I was getting acquainted with something new. I might find it better in a year's time when I'm up to speed on who's who and what's what. Episode 2 I liked and was much easier to follow. It didn't leave me wanting to watch next week, however if I remember it is on next week then I will watch it if there is nothing else doing.

Praise and criticism on Ceefax and Teletext again I see.

Well we finally got round to watching it..the first episode was a typical 'Lets get a new member of the team in so we can explain everything to her thus explain it to the viewers'. a few loopholes in the plot...why did Gwen bother going all the way back home just to tell her boyfriend she couldnt eat his dinner coz she had to go back to work and she dashed off straight away...why not just phone him? the bit with Gwen sat outside the cell of the weevil was 'Silence of the Lambs' (Maybe Silence of the Welsh lambs) And i must say, seeing as Torchwood is supposed to be so secret they did a hell of a lot to get noticed..and why is Captain Jack so secretive about his past to his fellow workers..I mean, they have all tackled aliens and heinous beasties so him being a time traveller will hardly be a shock !! All in all tho not to bad...the only thing is it came on nealry 5 minutes late so my DVD recorder cut out before the end..I got to where the crew arrived at the clinic.......

Bit like UNIT, the 'Top secret security establishment' everyone seemed to have heard of. LOL!
I can't see the point of Torchwood because they do pretty much the same thing. RTD must hate UNIT too.
