From BBC Online:
Last Updated: Wednesday, 6 December 2006, 11:50 GMT David Tennant named 'best Dr Who' Fans have named David Tennant the best ever Doctor Who in a poll, beating Tom Baker into second place. The Scottish actor, who made his debut last Christmas, received 28% of votes cast in a survey of 4,000 readers of Doctor Who Magazine.
"This is a real honour, and I am totally gobsmacked," he said.
Baker, who played the character from 1974 to 1981, has topped every previous poll conducted by the magazine, except in 1990 - when Sylvester McCoy won. "This is an incredible result for David, and shows how quickly viewers have taken to him," said editor Clayton Hickman.
"The iconic image of Doctor Who has always been of Tom Baker in his floppy hat and long, multi-coloured scarf, but it looks like that's been replaced."
Fans voted Tennant's predecessor Christopher Eccleston into third place, while Paul McGann received the fewest votes of the 10 actors to play the Doctor on TV.
Favourite assistant named
Readers also voted Billie Piper as their favourite Doctor Who assistant, in the role of Rose Tyler.
In second place was 1970s companion Sarah Jane Smith, played by Elisabeth Sladen.
Sladen is due to return to the screen in the spin-off series, The Sarah Jane Adventures, over Christmas.
A new episode of Doctor Who will be shown on BBC One this Christmas, with a guest appearance from comedy performer Catherine Tate.
Actress Freema Agyeman, 27, will be introduced as the Doctor's new companion Martha Jones in 2007, following Billie Piper's departure this year.
TOP FIVE DOCTORS 1. David Tennant - 28.2% 2. Tom Baker - 26.5% 3. Christopher Eccleston - 11.4% 4. Jon Pertwee - 9.6% 5. Patrick Troughton - 8.8% Source: Doctor Who Magazine
---------------------------------------------------------------
I don't think so. It's obvious it's new series fans who have voted for him and Billie and they've never seen the proper series so wouldn't know a good Doctor, companion or even story if it bit them on the bum.

My point exactly. A lot of people voting will be like you. Not that I was insulting you and people like you with my comment above. But there are better Doctors, companions and stories out there. I think the BBC poll says it all really. Eccleston was too Tomish with the manic grins. But on a comparison level, Eccleston was Hartnell to Baker while Tennant is Davison and Davison's Doctor was lacking that authority in his voice and actions.

I hate to upset any Tennant or Eccleston fans, but those two actors would not appear in my top five.
My top Doctor would still be Tom Baker, with Troughton and Pertwee close behind.

Latest BBC poll results:
Who's been the best Dr Who? David Tennant 26.22%
Tom Baker 43.67%
Christopher Eccleston 15.74%
Jon Pertwee 14.38%
14545 Votes Cast
You also can't help wondering if those DWM results were rigged seeing as they suck up so much since the new series started. I took some with me when I went to Plymouth for my friend to watch as she'd never seen them before. She liked The Invasion but wasn't keen on Troughton. However she loved Pertwee.

Patsy Well im not voting in this poll as I dont feel it would be fair for me to judge having only seen Tennant and Eccleston.

You should see some old ones. They may astound you. Not at how bad the effects are but at how brilliant the writing was. Though skip the 80s. Dire.

Maybe I will but its just finding the time! lol
Lots of people will vote Tennant because they fancy him - i think he is very attractive and although I might say I fancy him id not vote him for that reason!

Well if you do you could always rent something rather than buy. The Green Death (filmed in Wales!) is excellent and shows how a companion leaving should be done. Just ignore the blue screen effects. LOL! It was way ahead of its time with pollution ruining the planet and stuff.
I read somewhere it's been suggested they went round infant school playgrounds to conduct the poll. Nothing would surprise me. More than 15,500 votes now on the BBC site with Tom Baker still miles ahead of Tennant.

Oh is that when it was on? I didnt check the listings. I assumed it was on about late morning.
No I didnt go shopping until about midday. Wish it was possible at 6am though, empty shops and full shelves instead of being pushed and shoved all over Cardiff city centre! lol

Yes and an hour later on UK Gold +1. The next few stories are complete crap so don't bother. Well The Sea Devils is okay but The Silurians is better. And they're both FAR superior to 1984's dire Warriors of the Deep. They aren't showing them in the right order. The Green Death was the season finale in 1973 with Jo's exit while The Sea Devils, The Curse of Peladon and The Mutants are 1972. LOL! Then everyone would be out at 6am. Patsy

I dont think I have UKGOLD plus one on my package. I know I have E4 and Living tv plus one though but thats a fat lot of use LOL!
LOL! True. Although the trains were quite quiet compaired to the roads. There were traffic jams on the M4 when the train passed it. The train manager was funny on the way back when he did the announcement thing telling people not to hang out of the windows trying to smoke otherwise he'd make them get off at the next stop- he said only 50 mins to go, try and contain your urge to smoke - cheeky git!

I don't have a clue what's on our package but we have Sky. All I know is there's loads of clone channels.
LOL! People shouldn't have their head out the window anyway. Not unless they want it lopped off by a passing train. On Spanish trains in 1999 (don't know about now) you could go and smoke between compartments. It got surprisingly crowded.

We have NTL but only have the basic package as all I watch apart from the main 5 channels is ITV2, E4, UK Gold, E4 and Sky One. Pointless paying for a load of channels I dont watch!
LOL! Well as he mentioned it I assume someone on the train was doing it! Another one the other week was when people went to sit in first class the conduction announced that they had better move before the train departed Cardiff or else they would be charged the extra for first class! I dont think they allow smoking on any trains these days - First Great Western, Arriva Trains Wales and Central Trains (the 3 companies that serve Cardiff) certainly dont.

You watch more than me then. I watch, er, BBC and ITV now and again. My TV viewing has gone right down over the past 5 years.
