Although it appeared these two episodes were a two parter, in reality they were two very different episodes - with only a slight link between them.
Episode 12 was the best of both, as the whole of Torchwood felt as though it was about to be ruined, as chaos ruled the episode. Tosh and Jack got transported back to 1941 - and we learned an extensive bit about Captain Jack Harkness.
He isn't the real Captain Jack - the real one was killed in 1941, the day after TW's Jack and Tosh arrived. He was just a con man who arrived to steal artefacts, and ended up stealing the real Jack's identity.
The episode saw the two Jack's falling in love with one another, as 1940's Jack wrestled with his wrongful feelings for "Captain James Harper" - in reality our Jack Harkness. The end of the episode saw them kissing, just as Jack was rescued from 1941 by Gwen, Owen and Ianto.
Back in the present day, Ianto and Owen battled over whether or not to open the rift fully so bring back Tosh and Jack. Ianto ended up shooting Owen in the shoulder - after Jack and Ianto's affair was attacked by Owen. In the end Owen opened the rift, and saved the pair - while also trying to open it to find his lover from the 1950's.
A top-notch episode, with plenty of tension between all the characters, while a love story was also developed.
Episode 13 failed miserably. It never really reached any climax, until the very, very end. More about that later.
Basically it saw the rift remaining open, after Owen's decision to open it in the last episode. Roman warriors and black death sufferers came through to the present day, and quickly caused trouble.
Some of Jack's team all had visions from loved ones (Tosh from her mother, Ianto from his Cyber girlfriend and Owen from his ep. 10 lover), while Gwen had a vision of Rhys being murdered. He was later stabbed by a character from Episode 12 - who had concieved the whole idea of Jack and Tosh travelling to the 1940's.
In the end a distraught Gwen, Owen, Ianto and Tosh were fully convinced that the only way to save the world was to reopen the rift fully. Jack disagreed and pulled a gun, only to be shot three times by Owen. He lay dead as the others reopened the rift, only for him to come back to life.
However the reopening of the rift brought a terrible creature through the rift, who was there to destroy the planet. Anyone who was under its shadow instantly died. The eternally living Jack went under its shadow, and battled with it. The creature was destroyed as Jack himself died (again).
Rhys came back to life as Gwen returned to work, waiting for Jack to return from the dead. Days passed, and nothing happened with all of them realising that this time he was dead. Gwen kissed him goodbye, only for that kiss to be the "kiss of life" and for Jack to wake up.
At the end of the episode Gwen asked Jack who he had seen, as the rest of them had all had visions. He said nobody, and she asked who would he have liked to have seen if he had had a vision. Jack cryptically said "A good doctor."
Shortly after this a familiar sound could be heard, and Jack raced out of his office - as papers blew around. A light shone on Jack's face. Gwen followed him out of the office, having heard the sound, only for to find he had disappeared.
And the sound - that of the Tardis! Good ending, crap episode. I have liked Torchwood though, and hopefully better storylines will be created. I got the feeling with the first series that RTD and co. weren't confident that it would get a second series and so only tested the water, rather than pushing the boundries totally.
