From The Mirror etcTate is new girlCATHERINE Tate is to become Doctor Who's new assistant, it was revealed last night. The comedy actress, who was in the Christmas special as the Runaway Bride, will star in the fourth series starting next spring. She said: "I am delighted to be returning to Dr Who. I had a blast at Christmas and look forward to travelling again through time and space with that nice man from Gallifrey." Catherine's character Donna will be the Doctor's other assistant beside Martha Jones, played by Freema Agyeman.

RTD's probably been banned from having his snog the Doc. The Christmas ep was the first time I'd ever seen Catherine Tate as I hardly watch TV these days. I couldn't see what all the fuss was about. She's as annoying as Ricky Gervais. Patsy

NO ONE can be as annoying as Ricky (So smug I could explode) Gervais

LOL! Well she's not smug but I don't think she's particularly great either. Not worth the hype.

The Christmas Invasion was absolute rubbish so I'm not looking forward to Catherine Tate.
However, if she's in the show for a full series rather than just one story they can't have her acting in the same manner for the entire run. They'd have to "soften" her character somewhat I would have thought.
So, whilst I'm not happy about it, I'm going to wait & see if there are any "character modifications" before slagging it off.
Still not very hopeful though.....

Me neither. I read it on Ceefax this morning and got the shudders. Another gimmick. RTD must be getting really desperate for viewers. This isn't going to help if people who hate her won't watch.

I agree that there will have to be changes made to the character if she is going to appear in an entire series. This being RTD's series she will need a large, extended family for one thing. And maybe a boyfriend for good measure. Just like Patsy I got the shudders this morning at the news. Someone on Teletext suggested that Sally Sparrow from Episode 10 of this series should return. I agree as she would be a brilliant companion and her boyfriend could tag along as well as he was also pretty likeable. Or even Tom Ellis' doctor character from the final episode.

LOL! Eithne's hit the nail smack bang on the head. All those family members and a fella. That's all RTD can come up with. Rose's were bad enough but it's really getting on my wick now more than then (which was bad enough).
Why can't it be an unknown? Worked well in the past. I'm sick too of all these names to pull in the viewers. Christmas will get good ratings purely for all the Kylie fans. Catherine Tate fans will watch series 4 but he's alienating the core of fandom.

There's been comments about bad casting comparing her to Bonnie Langford. LOL! Bonnie's a lovely lady in real life but Mel Bush is irritating as hell!

I like Bonnie langford ..Geoff went to see her in The Pirates of Penzanze about 15 years ago....and everyone thought 'Oh God Bonnie Langford'...but he says she absolutley stole the show and was marvellous
she is doing a tour at the moment with Sandi Toksvig

She is. I was really miffed I missed her panel at Panopticon 2000 in Manchester after hearing she went down a storm but I was queuing for autographs and even missed lunch the queue was that bad. Again people had the "Oh God Bonnie Langford" mentality. But I did meet her in the photos when she was 8 1/2 months pregnant and she was lovely. She stood during the entire hour session unlike Sophie Aldred a year or so earlier at 5 months sat in a chair.
