it was like a mixture of Robots of Death,Titanic and the Poseidon adventure !!
At least it was better than last years Christmas episode (and the one before that to be honest)

Oh yes. Well having given Titanic a wide berth because it's shit and historically inaccurate, I did see elements of the Poseidon Adventure and was half expecting the ship to go upside down and the fat woman swim for it a la Shelley Winters.
I was bored throughout and got dizzy rolling my eyes at RTD just having to have the Doctor involved in kissing again. None of it really made sense and the rip off of Robots of Death, especially the "Kill, kill kill" bit was a distraction. Longer than the last two but still no real character development. Then it just had to go all soppy at the end with Astrid and the Doctor trying to bring her back to life when he knows it's against the first law of time otherwise we'd have been stuck with Adric. LOL!
Oh yes and something else ripped off - the teleport bracelets from Blakes 7.

I quite enjoyed it overall. Not brilliant, but held my attention.

Maybe someone other than RTD could write it next year. He seems to keep reusing the same themes.
Even the Beeb admit a Robots of Death similarity:
Older viewers may recall that another race of mechanical men with a habit of chanting "Kill, kill, kill" and getting their hands stuck in doors appeared in the Fourth Doctor adventure The Robots Of Death.
Definitely time for new ideas then. I think if it hadn't been for that I may have enjoyed it. I kept expecting Taran Capel to pop out, which he did sort of under the guise of Max Capricorn.
Sooty, it's on BBC1, New Year's Day at 2.15pm.

As you've never seen the superb Robots of Death (and probably The Poseidon Adventure) you'll probably enjoy it as there's nothing to compare it too. Several mentions of being a PA rip off on Teletext I see.

I agree with Jez that it was good in parts, but not great or brilliant or anything like that.
Kylie was good and I really wish she was the new assistant. They'll have to make changes to the Catherine Tate character to make her more likeable though - it just can't work if they don't. Pity Kylie died and can't make a return as I'd quite like to see Astrid back again.
Story was ok, but again it was a bit similar to the other years I thought. I'm glad they referred to the fact that London had been almost deserted as a result of the past two Christmasses. The promo for the next series didn't make me all that excited though. Nothing looked amazing or gripping in it.

Yeah I think it was a big mistake to have Astrid die - she would have been great as the new assistant. The story was ok I agree, however it didnt hold my attention all of the time during the hour and a bit it was on however I stayed watching until the end.
I agree Eithne, the promo for the next series looked rubbish.

I found it to be very average, good in parts, but very mundane and too long. An hour 10 or there abouts? No wonder it dragged - as well as being lackluster.
On Christmas day there were my two nieces and two other kids from my brother in law's family, so there was some noise during it, so I decided to re-watch it last night. But i still got bored in some of it.
The good: The "Info angels" using they're halos, Astrid, and I also thought the young officer, Officer Frame, was good as well, a bit wooden in parts with acting, but still good overall.
Astrid: I agree she would've made a great companion, not that the BEEB could afford Kylie. She got very excited with being on Earth, and really didn't understand things like xmas (Though that was undoubtedly through in to reek of being an xmas Dr Who). I missed what she actually was, though she looked human (anyone?)
But i think the biggest thing with Astrid, and this struck me last night whilst watching it again, was that she harked back to the very early "needs to scream and be rescued" type heroine, though you don't get these days as they're PC and "A match for the doctor." It may be a type from a bygone age, but she is that, though she did "have a go" as they say at the end with offing Max and herself.
Yet aside from being a "Scream occasionally and needs to be rescued type", she was played with warmth by Kylie, and there's a complete naivety and innocence about Astrid, which is what makes her a) work and b) so likeable.
I did think it was very dry and lackluster in a lot of places though, and far too long for an xmas episode.
It's funny, when we were watching it (two families) there was a quiet sssshing towards the kids from some one, followed by a low murmur from my eldest niece who wanted it turned over, she said it was too scary! Although my youngest niece aged 6, seemed to have no problem with it! At all!

RTD never seems to be able to make things work short or long. There was so much potential with the extra 25 mins and he wasted it. How many of the millions only tuned in for Kylie? Probably more Kylie than DW fans!

I enjoyed it on the whole, although it was a bit too long.
I enjoyed the character of Astrid, and thought it sad when she died. She would have made a great companion.
