Home and Away - Former Actress Dies

Belinda Emmett, a former actress in the Australian soap Home and Away, has died of cancer at the age of 32.

Emmett, who played Rebecca Fisher, died this morning after a long battle with the disease, her family said.

She appeared in Home and Away between 1996 and 1999.

In 1998 she was diagnosed with breast cancer in at the age of 24.

After a period in remission, Emmett was diagnosed with secondary bone cancer in 2001, while playing nurse Jodi Horner in the Australian hospital television drama All Saints.

She died in a Sydney hospital surrounded by family including Australian television talk show host Rove McManus, whom she married last year, the family said in a statement.

"It is with great sadness we advise that Belinda Emmett's battle with cancer has ended," the statement said.

Prime Minister John Howard paid tribute to the actress.

He said: "I was very saddened to learn of the death of Belinda Emmett.

"She fought a very courageous battle against cancer.

"On behalf of (my wife) Janette and myself, I extend my deepest sympathies to her husband, Rove McManus, and her family and friends."

McManus today cancelled the upcoming episode of his TV show Rove Live, with the Ten Network issuing a statement saying it was not sure when the show would return.

Thank you for passing this on Pipkin(giveing you a k for doing it), I remember her as Rebecca Fisher from when I used to watch Home and Away, she was lovely :,(. her poor husband Rove must be so heartbroken as she was no age :,(.god bless you, R.I.P Belinda Emmett/ Rebecca Fisher.

I remember her as Rebecca as well. I know she had time off as the role was recast in the late 1990s for several months so she had a long ilness. Very sad news, RIP Rebecca.

I remember her part being played by another actress ( Who also has since died ) when she was undergoing initial treatment.

I thought when she returned she was cured. My deepest sympathies go out to her family.

I remember her in Home and Away too..I used to watch it before ITV lost it to Channel 5 and it was off air for a year...a tragedy at any age..but so young....

I read that over the weekend. It really is sad. She was so young. Paul and I both remembered her.

Yes I saw this myself, though it did say in one of the papers, that she did nothing about her illness at first and ignored it. I can understand her fear if these stories are true, but that is the last thing she should have done.

I do not remember, at least I don't think I do this other other actress taking the part, and she dying too?

The actress who replaced her for a while was called Megan Connolly, and she died from a Heroin overdose in 2001.

Such sad news that 2 of the actresses who played Rebecca are no longer with us. 4 actresses played her in total over the course of the series.
