Introducing BBC1's new Aussie soap Out of the Blue Tuesday 1st April
The BBC has announced that its major new Australian-based daytime soap, Out of the Blue, will premiere on BBC1 on Monday, April 28.
Although no transmission time has yet been allocated, it's thought that Out of the Blue will screen at lunchtime in a similar time to the previous daytime slot of Neighbours.
Neighbours was bought by Five last year and now screens at 5.30pm on that channel.
Out of the Blue is set in the Sydney beauty spot of Manly Beach and concerns the lives of a group of 30-something friends who have returned to Manly for a high school reunion after nine years apart. The celebrations soon end when one of the friends is found dead in the surf. And so the story begins...
BBC drama controller Jane Tranter said at the time of the commission of the multi-million pound, 130-episode series: "This is an ambitious project that we think will break new ground, at the same time as providing daytime audiences with a compelling and intriguing watch."
With a touch of irony, the Aussie broadcaster Network Ten has bought the rights to show the soap in Australia off the BBC.

Sounds interesting, although no soap since Hollyoaks has lasted. And if it is on at the same time a Neighbours on Five I can't see it doing well.

Well apparently it wont be on in Neighbours old slot on BBC1 but an earlier afternoon slot?
Family Affairs lasted nearly 9 years so had a good run! Was never likely to get a huge following compaired to the main 3 soaps though. I expect this will be the same stuck in a daytime slot.

I wonder will they give it an early evening slot like Neighbours. They have moved the Weakest Link over to BBC1 though, so I can't see them moving it back and giving this the 5.30 slot.

I loved ACP. Probabaly did guest roles in that as every 2 part story had guest characters.

Early days. I reckon it will take a while to sort everyone out. The backdrop of the beach is lovely though.
Time will tell if it has the same draw as Neighbours. I am enjoying it so far.

I enjoyed it. Far better than the other 2 aussie soaps. I like it because most of the cast are in their early 30s so there is hardly any teens.

This from today's DS
New Australian soap Out of the Blue made a decent first appearance on BBC One yesterday, overnight viewing figures show.
Though the corporation insists the new show is not intended as a Neighbours replacement, it was commissioned for the post-lunch slot after Five poached its long-running predecessor.
The programme attracted 1.2m (17.5%) yesterday - down 400,000 on the slot average - but its performance may have been distorted by BBC One showing two episodes back-to-back. Blue is lined up to air for 20 minutes from 2.10pm every weekday, but yesterday it ran for 45 minutes from 2.15pm.
A spokesman for BBC One also noted that, as a soap, it would take some time to establish whether viewers would take to Out of the Blue.
"It is a really encouraging start, the performance was consistent with the slot and it won the slot," he added.
"The qualities of Out of the Blue are different from Neighbours - the main soap for the BBC in the daytime is now Doctors, which is performing amazingly well."
BBC One has ordered 130 half-hour episodes of the Sydney-based soap, which gives it an initial six-month run. It does not have a teatime repeat as Neighbours did, and still does on Five.

I still love Neighbours to bits, dont get me wrong, and ive watched it since I was about 7 but it does go through boring patches. Im still watching Neighbours though. Ive given up on Home and Away a few months ago as all the best characters left.
Hmmm, well OOTB isnt in the best of slots, its never gonna get huge ratings at 2pm in the afternoon. A shame the BBC would rather show a quiz show that has been done to death in the teatime slot. OOTB would be perfect IMO!

From DS
The Australian soap commissioned for BBC One after Five poached Neighbours is to be moved to BBC Two less than a month after it began.
Out of the Blue was widely seen as a successor to Neighbours, despite the corporation's protestations otherwise.
Though it opened to a decent 1.2m viewers on April 28, audiences for the new show have dropped off steeply. On Tuesday only 654,000 were watching - falling well short of the channel's 1.9m slot average.
A BBC spokesman confirmed that it would air on BBC Two at the earlier time of 1pm from May 19.
"Out of the Blue is a bold and original commission for BBC daytime with its compelling mix of human drama and its intriguing murder mystery set in a stunning location," he said. "The afternoon slot on BBC One, which the series had been in, is very competitive and by moving the show to BBC Two, we hope it will find a stronger home.
BBC One ordered 130 half-hour episodes of the Sydney-based soap, which would give it a six-month run.
Oh dear, I bet they wish they had kept Neighbours now. I wonder what they will dredge up to fill it's slot. ?

It looks like its replaced by Diagnosis Murder on BBC1.
I guess there is no chance of it getting longer than the 6 month commision then unless it does better on BBC2?

Somehow I can't see a move to BBC2 improving the figures. In fact, I would expect it to get less.
