I read on Teletext today a comment from someone in Ireland complaining how the British parents were being portrayed as ignorant and they would know what a barbecue is. Wonder how many will actually notice?

I read on Teletext today a comment from someone in Ireland complaining how the British parents were being portrayed as ignorant and they would know what a barbecue is. Wonder how many will actually notice? Patsy Well this person either watched a different show to me or they are the ones who are being very ignorant. I've seen the scene in question (on Channel 4 next week). No where does it make a reference to the British couple not knowing what a barbecue is. It is a 15 second segment of them being shown how it works. How to load the coals etc. Not the same thing if you take it into context who these British people are. They are a multi-millionaire aging couple who have servants to do everything for them, they don't have to lift a finger to do anything. They were visiting common place surberbia from their mansion to humour their prospective daughter-in-law. So it was perfectly understandable in its context. Under no circumstances are you to see this couple as a representative of the British. They are eccentric (he is a cross-dresser) and mega-rich. I have to confess while I know what a barbecue is, I wouldn't have the first clue on how to load it or get it started with the coals etc. I've probably only eaten a true barbecue twice in my entire life.

well in NZ everyone has barbecues in the summer time at least once a week ( unless you are a rich cross dresser perhaps LOL)

Don't blink as you will miss it. I can't wait to see what you have to say Jez. I've not seen the whole episode yet but I have seen that bit as it was right at the start and I had attempted to start watching. It is in the bit at the beginning where they introduce the theme. The theme for this week is Ian and his parents and any mysteries laying behind them.
I personally would not of even noticed the scene had someone not complained on teletext. It wasn't even a fall scene it was just a 15 second bit. It didn't say they didn't know what a barbecue was, we joined the scene with them being talked through how it works. In fact it could be an insult to Susan as after the explanation in typical Susan style disaster strikes a little while later with said barbecue. I have to say I really wouldn't know how to load the coals on a barbecue without reading the instructions or being shown but it doesn't mean I don't know what a barbecue is.
Also to me it is total nonsense to say the show is trying to show British people as ignorant. Ian has been a central character all season and he is far from stupid. There has been at least one more British person I can think of, the buttler Rupert, who was a total gentleman.
Personally I think people today sometimes look for things to complain about for the sake of it and look for prejudices that don't exist whether it be racism, sexism, ageism, insulting the disabled. True there is a lot of it about, but not under every stone and we don't have to go looking for it every second in trivial shows such as this surely?

I totally agree with you Lane. Some people will just complain about anything and everything!
I look forward to seeing this ep on Wednesday on C4 - the E4 one is a bit late for me when ive work the next morning.

I actually got to watch this episode last night on E4 and I rewatched the beginning. From the starting post the parents are odd, in fact a little OTT. He is just plain not normal as you will see for yourself as the episode progresses. She is your typical aristocracy. I've said before and I'll say again I really don't see how we are supposed to be offended by then as they don't represent typical British people and we have already had other British people in the series.
The only slight thing the teletext complainer has a point on is by one line the father did imply he didn't know what a barbecue was, although he didn't actually say it. His first line was "so you put the meat on the coal." The wife seemed to understand. I have to say again however it didn't actually say he hadn't heard of a barbecue, although it could be immplied by his opening line. That said it could also be implied that he just didn't know what you do with a barbecue (which is quite likely considering his background of servants). As said before I know what a barbecue is but wouldn't have the first clue where and when the meat went on.
The parents are OTT but the lack of barbecue knowledge has been and gone and moved on to disaster before you can really step back and take notice. It is made quite clear all the way through the dig is at Susan. I'm sure I would not of noticed if the teletext viewer hadn't been picky.

Well I must say I can't see what the fuss was about.
It's a pity some people have so little to do that thaey have to write a letter complaining about something so petty.

Overall I enjoyed last nights episode (C4) although the absense of Bree was noticed. I liked Gaby in this episode again - the stuff with her stealing those dresses from her new fella's ex wife was funny - as was the ex wife making her give back the dress she was wearing. Dont think much of her new bloke though but at least its more believable than her getting together with Zac.
Lynnette was also good in this episode - the stuff with the orange t-shirts was a bit boring though.
Susan I also found irritating but some of the scenes with the in laws were funny.

Your ahead of me now Jez. I haven't seen this episode yet. ABC made it so annoying having one episode, then no new show for 3 weeks, then a few more weeks wait for a new episode. I started to lose interest in the show. I do have them taped, so if you say they are good I'll have a DH marathon tomorrow night when Al is out.

Dreadful the way ABC make viewers wait for weeks on end. However you will be pleased to know Deborah you have new episodes every week from now to the end of the season on the 20th May.
Oh I already posted my thoughts on this particular episode in a new thread (sorry). I liked "Dress Big" and the episode before it "My Husband, The Pig." However I didn't care for the latest US/E4 one "Liasons" it seemed to be too much about sex. I don't mind sex and swearing on TV if they add to the story or tell you something about a character (like on "Life On Mars") however the upcoming episode on Chanel 4 next week (which E4 had last night and ABC/CTV had on Sunday) seemed to have every other scene about sex and I got tired of it after a while. After all how many times do we have to be reminded that Edie and Gaby are sluts? We know that already, and that's part of their entertainment value. However for me at least it was overkill. I will be interested in what others think when they get to it?

Hello. Remember me? I am a stranger on this board at this stage.
Anyway, I completely agree that the letter-writer about the British representation was OTT in their complaint. I mean I watched the episode, and didn't pick up anything until after I had seen it - from here!
As for "Liasons" I totally agree about the overuse of sex. It was almost as if the episode was written after the title was decided - judging by the amount of sex talk, sex scenes and sex in general. It wasn't smart, or funny, for the most part - though there were some good exceptions. I have a feeling that Tom and Lynettes marriage will be greatly tested over the next few episodes. Not too keen on Gabby's latest squeeze, but I doubt he will be around for too long.
Elsewhere the car crash was also pointless IMO, just a stunt put in for both comedy and to hype the show up - not really to develop the plot. Ian could just have easily ended up in the water somewhere else.
I liked the build up to the Edie/Carlos relationship (though there are rumours - fuelled by Eva Longoria - that Carlos and Gabby will reunite). Pity the latest episode totally ruined it, with the whole "bad sex" followed by "unfunny sex" thing.
Oh - and Bree will be back for the final episode this series apparently as well.

Sorry I'm not missing her one bit but I am really missing Andrew and Danielle. I know Andrew has been in it, but only a blink of an eye.
All reports suggest Bree is back for the final episode this season but not 100% confirmed yet.
