I finally got around to watching this episode on E4 reruns last night. It was Season 3, episode 17: "Dress Big." My husband and I quite enjoyed it. Okay it wasn't the best of the season but it certainly wasn't the worst. My least favourite this year to date has been Ep 4"Like It Was." I'm not so sure about it being a filler episode, but it perhaps falls under transitional.
My general observations:-
Carlos and Travers, what a lovely couple. It is so sweet seeing him be the father figure. Also I'm tickling myself a bit every time I see Jake Cherry. Until two weeks ago I'd never heard of him. Now I've seen him in two different things. The week he began on DH in the UK I was visiting family who had just bought the DVD "Night At The Museum" and he is the little boy in that. Quite different actually. I wouldn't of recognised him had it not been for the name in the credits.
I hope Edie and Carlos get together for a while. Edie, I started to feel quite sorry for as we began to unravel the hidden layers of her character. She has hinted before to Julie that she was a good little girl that had turned bad. I hope they explore more Edie's character and we get to understand a bit more why she behaves the way she does.
I wish we had seen more of Andrew bar a split second. And I'm missing Danielle. I just love those two crazy kids. Honestly though I didn't give Bree or Orson a single thought until the end theme music started. I like having Edie as the fourth housewife.
Gaby (and why is it spelt with only one B? Against my knowledge of the English language however ABC do seem to spell it this way, so I better start ). Now while I don't care much for Gaby's story, I can't help but be entertained by her. She gets more outrageous as time goes on. The scene in the bathroom was a bit boring as I'd seen it in the ABC released trailers. However there were other things about Gaby to be occupied with. We all knew she was selfish, superficial and now we can add thief to the list. However seeing how low this character can stoop is all part of the fun.
The one thing I like about Gaby is that she doesn't pretend to be something she isn't. What you see is what you get. The reason why I hate Bree so much (although find her entertaining) and now hate Lynette more (who isn't entertaining me) is because they lie, manipulate and don't care who they hurt to get what they want. Yet all the time pretend to be citizens of the utmost respectability. But Gaby is Gaby
Speaking of Lynette in this episode, I have just about lost all patience with her, her stories and everything about her. She used to be a character you could identify with, the housewife struggling to raise her children. Then struggling to hold down a job and support her weaker husband. She also seemed the most normal and genuine and had brains. She still has the brains of Wisteria Lane, however now she has become a total control freak. Too often now we are seeing her bossing Tom around, too often we see her trying to manipulate others, even resulting to bribery on numerous previous occasions. It saddens me because I used to really really love her.
In "Dress Big", Lynette might of had a point over the orange uniforms, however she then went and totally ruined it by 1) trying to manipulate the staff without even listening or caring for their genuine concerns in order to try and get what she wanted and 2) insulting that poor pathetic waitress. That was so cruel. Lynette's only saving grace in this episode that won her some brownie points with me was when we see her wear the orange top at the end.
Don't care for Victor one way or the other. However I wish we were to see more of ex-wife Samantha. She now looks an interesting character?
I'm not being bias here as I've never actually thought it before, however Susan for me without doubt was the highlight. I suspect Teri Hatcher had a lot to do with this. For a while she has seemed a bit bored in her acting at times in DH episodes. However in this, despite the flu (and she had it bad), her performance was top notch. She hit every note as they say. I really was quite taken back at how good she was (given the flu). If I hadn't read the pre-buzz I wouldn't of known she was ill at all while filming this episode. Also in the last couple of episodes Teri appears to of had a haircut, it looks great on her. Keeping the length yet tidying up so it doesn't look straggly and it bounced around. It reminds me of a cross between her Lois Lane and Susan. All things considered she looks quite healthy
From beginning to end Susan's story flowed. The typical Susan mishaps at the beginning actually weren't boring even though you knew disaster was going to strike. Now whether that was down to Teri's acting or whether it was just the imagination in the writers that they manage to fool you into forgetting how cliché Susan's accidents are? In fact one of the accidents wasn't even her own fault. Quite clearly the mother had been standing behind the door listening, otherwise there is no explanation for her going flying as all Susan did was come through the door with a tray of food. The scenes with Mike were sad but I think we are starting to see Susan tick it over in her head, particularly as she started to question Ian's motives about suddenly wanting a prenup. And they say Susan's stupid? Far from it the way she manipulated the father.
As to prenups, I won't get into that discussion other than I am one of those who would of gladly signed one.
Oh one last thing I had to laugh when Susan was telling the story of the nightmare waitress job of when she had to be dressed as a pirate. Take note Lynette things could be worse.
All in all an entertaining episode.
