Most people here agree that Emmerdale has really went downhill in recent times. It's just not where it once was. I've drifted out of it, and don't find characters like Victoria Version 2, Jamie, Daz, Ross, Lexi or Carrie appealing at all.
Also the storylines are very badly written now in comparison to where they once where and I'm sick of all these Emmerdale v. Eastenders battles. OK, they proved a point that EE was rubbish 2 years ago when they first started - but doing them continually for no reason is just stupidness.
So what can the new person do to improve the show? Who should they axe? Who should return? What should change?

Cut the show back to 3 episodes a week for a start!

The one thing Michael Grade can do, as we know, if reduce the eps. That would help enormously as the cast would be reduced too leading to less drivel and more decent writing.

Without a doubt, all soaps should be knocked back to 3 episodes a week (maximum).
Regarding Emmerdale specifically - I wouldn't know where to start.
More realism, less catastrophic disasters/accidents/appallingly forced 'funny' moments.
Pruning back all the awful Panto charcters - Viv, Bob, Paddy, Marlon, most of the Dingles (why were they ever introduced, and will we ever see an end to the introductions of 'new' ones? - Eli being the latest, and probably worst).
Getting rid of the dross - Paul, Jamie, Duke etc etc.
I've given up - my head hurts.

I`m in the small minority that likes Duke. His gruff exterior makes me think he`d be perfect for Edna. My get rid PDQ list includes Marlon, Viv, Donna, Paul, Hillary, Jamie, Louise and the Kings (except Jimmy). Move to 3 episodes a week and Bobs your Uncle...a great soap again  |

Oops I left out Grayson out in my 'Get rid PDQ' campaign too. An oversight for sure. And the way Perdy is being lately - get rid of her too

Another problem I have with Emmerdale is that there isn't even one character left that I really care about, and that's pretty important if you want to watch on a regular basis!
