I used to like Pat Coombs. Is she still alive? She was always appearing on Celebrity Squares and Bob Monkhouse would call her Patty Coombs. I still go, "Ooh er" like she did. It's burned into my childhood psyche. LOL!

Pat Coombs died about 8 years ago Pats. I really adored Bob Monkhouse....I was absolutely gutted when he died.

Oh did she? I can't keep up. Maybe it's because I'm older but more seem to be popping off these days. Almost every day there's another. She was brilliant but forgotten I think.
Bob Monkhouse was fantastic. I'd loved to have seen him live. I was really glad I saw Frankie Howerd at the Mayflower the year before he died. In fact it was the first time since the 70s my mum had come out as well. For so long my dad would take me to the pictures and things because she didn't want to know. Didn't matter every single word was scripted and rehearsed and he wore a terrible wig. He was a comic genius who had everyone in tears of laughter. Bob Monkhouse was the same and better suited I think as a comedian than actor. There aren't any like that any more.

I was lucky enough to see him live in May 1987 at the Stardust club in Usk....he was absolutely brilliant. My sides were aching by the end of the night ;D

I just looked Pat Coombs up. I'd really forgotten she'd died. Osteoporosis and emphysema. Blimey.
You were lucky. Did hubby see him too? I despair at the future of 'talent' these days.

Yes he did Pats. It was our first official date and we went with our Ange and her boyfriend (now her hubby). When Kent got up to go to the bathroom during Bobs performance, he walked back to his seat and Bob deadpanned "more than 3 shakes is considered masterbation....you look like you`ve had about 12" ;D

LMAO! I take it he laughed and wasn't offended. That's so funny. A sorely missed genius.

lol he wasn`t offended in the least. And when Bob discovered he was in the US Navy he went through his archival material in his head and told no end of American/Navy jokes. I wish I could remember them but I haven`t got the memory that Bob had....bless his heart

Aww that was nice of him. Embarrassing future hubby like that on your first date by making the entire audience gawp at him. How many others get special treatment? LOL! Did you ever write to Bob?

No I never did....wish I had now. Other comedians we saw at the Stardust clubs at different times were Jasper Carrot and Stan Boardman (absolute shite) Jasper Carrot was brilliant. He wore a dazzling white suit, and he was so witty. Bob Monkhouse was the best though.

Was Stan Boardman still going on about the Germans bombing their chippy? Bet he does even now. Apparently Tom O'Connor was still telling the same jokes over Christmas and New Year on Oriana he was telling 30 years earlier in Liverpool clubs. Glad we couldn't pick him up at Lisbon then. LOL!

Oh yeah and saying "dirty fokkers" almost every other line. Another comedian who I thought was absolute shite was Gary Wilmot. We saw him in Newport, South Wales and he did the exact same routine that he did on telly the night before. Very disappointing.

Doesn't surprised me. Stan Boardman is fokking crap. I never knew that about Gary Wilmot. He was quite a good impressionist but seems to be more a musical actor these days. I don't understand why people follow them around on tours. Same jokes week in, week out. Frankie Howerd recognised some in the front row and asked why. Didn't catch the reply. Patsy

When i worked at the Winter gardens in Blackpool about 20 years ago Bob Monkhouse was the guest speaker at a masonic do in one of the large function rooms called 'The Spanish hall',it was lovely room with great acoustics..when it was quiet i used to go up onto the balcony and sing 'Don't cry for me Argentina'..anyway I digress...Bob got up after the meal and delivered an after dinner talk for about 2 hours..he was briiliant..ad libbing, answering questions etc.,...and he never had one page of notes or script with him...truly a comic genius

Wow! Did you get to speak to him? Even musicians can't do without the words in front of them. There'll never be another like Bob.

Not only an excellent comedian with a memory as big as Texas, his kind heart matched it too. He did tons for various charities.

Probably remembered for their chequered past - not their comedy ability Pats. Jim Davidson springs to mind, although I never really rated him much as a comedian anyway.

LOL! I thought he was good when I was younger. Kenny Everett is sadly remembered for the wrong things rather than his genius.
