From DSCoronation Street star Michael Starke did not know that he was being axed from the soap until he read about it in a newspaper. News that Starke's character Jerry Morton is being written out of the ITV1 show was leaked to the press last month. His on-screen family Mel (Emma Edmonson), Darryl (Johnny Dixon), Kayleigh (Jessica Bardon) and Finlay (Ramone Quinn) are also on the way out. "There was a leak, so I was at home when I got the news. It was very unfortunate, but that's the way it goes in this business," Michael told the Liverpool Daily Post. "You shouldn't find out about your job like that, but there are a lot of sacrifices that you make in this game." The Morton family have been involved in few storylines since they joined the cast last March, however Jerry finally comes to the forefront this week when he suffers a heart attack in the Rovers. "We have been adrift, because we haven't had many storylines and those that we have had have been dropped because something's changed," Michael explained. "Now we have a storyline, it's looking really good and it's a chance to show that we've got something - and give the family a chance to really blend and show what they're all about."

I think to be honest the whole family should be given a bit more time to settle in..same with the Bookies,as much as I am not keen on them at the mo..I always believe in giving peope a fair chance

Why do new characters have to be rammed down throats all the time? What's wrong with just day to day stuff? Makes them more endearing if we can identify with their average woes. That's why I liked Harry Flagg. He was there but not thrust at us the way KF was when she was cast and others since. Same in all soaps. Just be normal characters.

Corrie used to have an excellent knack of bringing new characters in gently and after a while it was as if they had been there years...they don't seem to do that now..the throw them in..ram them down our throats, then when people complain they axe them without a by or leave

I feel sorry for Michael Starke I really do. I`m still living in hope that he can be saved. He was the best of the bunch by a mile.

Remember the Nelsons? Who gave a toss when the truth was revealed about them?

and...
and...
Couldn't agree more; unfortunately I think a lot of the problems here can be laid squarely at the doors of the so-called 'critics' on TV sofas and in the trashy papers.
I feel sorry for Michael Starke too - no one should find out they've been dumped via an article (like no boyfriend/girlfriend should be dumped via text!). Has to be said, it looks like he's accepted the situation pretty gracefully too, so good on him.
Corrie always used to be so good at letting characters 'settle in'.
I just hope they don't make the same mistake with Tina - overuse her, and then a few months down the line, decide 'there's nowhere for her to go' - she's far too good a character for that.

Just looking at that pictue I have realised that Grandad is no longer around.........I can't remember last time I saw him.
It's a rotten way to find you have been axed. I am sorry Jerry is going and I know not many of you like them, but I'm sorry the bookies are axed, they had loads more milage in them. It's all the fault of the writers who don't do enough with them.

It's the old chestnut of too many characters. Do they really need so many when most are glorified extras? Each time they added an episode they brought in more cast and as a result the characters have suffered due to underuse. Emmerdale has one more episode but less characters. If they are determined to keep five a week they need to axe at least 20 of the cast and not replace them.

In last nights Corrie I was watching Jerry and I felt so sad that he`s leaving. he is such a wonderful character. I can`t help but think it`s the actors who plays his kids that led to his downfall. None of them are very believable. And so Jerry had to take the fall with the rest of them because of it as it wouldn`t be very believable if the kids left and Jerry stayed.
