From Digital Spy Coronation Street actor Rob James-Collier has quit after just under two years with the ITV soap over fears of being "typecast". The 31-year-old, who has played Weatherfield's Liam Connor since 2006, reportedly revealed his intention to leave only days before filming his on-screen wedding to Maria Sutherland (Samia Smith). A source at the soap told the News of the World: "Nobody was expecting this and it's bad news because Liam has become hugely popular with fans. He won 'Sexiest Male' at the British Soap Awards and they had big things planned for him. "They wanted the Carla-Liam-Maria thing to really step up in pace, with him finally cheating on his girl with his sister-in-law. It would have given them a brilliant storyline which could have bubbled away until Christmas." They added: "He says that he doesn't want to be typecast." A spokeswoman confirmed to DS this morning: "We've known for some time that Rob would be leaving at the end of his current contract. It's given the writers time to pen a really good exit storyline for his character, Liam. "Rob will remain filming with us until around October and he will bow out on screen at the end of the year." I am not happy at this, not happy at all.

No one stays. I think it's the amount of eps more than being typecast. It's not the same as it used to be. Nowadays ex-soap stars are always getting jobs so he's talking crap.
Mind you with the way they planned to keep this storyline going all year I bet a lot of people will be glad. It will constantly go around in circles.

Me too - I am gutted at this news, and I know Nick will be!
However, when reading the article in the news of the world they mentioned they had planned to drag out the love triangle with Carla, Liam and Maria to next Christmas so at least thats one silver lining that we wont have this storyline dragging so long.

Next Christmas?!?! As IF!! Surely one of them would have given up by then. I am disappointed that he's leaving but hey-ho. As long asCarla stops, because in my opinoin she is comedy GOLD!! She will probably benefit from being given better storylines where she isn't just tied to a man like she has been pretty much when she started (Liam, Paul, Tony . . . ). I am hoping that Tony isn't going to be loitering around for much longer as well!!!!

I just spoke to my mother and told her the bad news. She is furious, and she said she probably won`t bother watching it again after he leaves. I really can`t stand Carla...wish she was the one leaving instead |

Oh it wouldn't but probably will be the start of his exit. He'll then hate Carla because she's got the notch on the bedpost and doesn't want anything to do with him any more.

I don`t think I can stand this triangle til Christmas...it`s getting monotonous now.
Ooh I wonder what will happen to the factory? I can`t imagine Carla running it by herself somehow. Sooner or later with the hateful way she treats her staff, she`ll be found in the back of the ginnell with 10 pairs of Underworld knickers rammed down her throat.
