From Digital SpyCoronation Street producers have revealed that long-standing character Betty Williams will not be leaving the soap. Williams, who is played by the show's oldest cast member, 87-year-old Betty Driver, has starred in the programme since 1969. However, despite her age, the show's bosses believe that the character, who is famed for her traditional hot pot meal, still has a role to play on the soap. Producer Keiran Roberts told The Sun: "She is still going strong and enjoying the role. Betty is one of the Street's great traditional characters who seem to have been there forever. "It’s always been our aim to keep a great mix of contemporary stories with older, more traditional characters. Comedy and tragedy combined with very clever writing has always been a trademark of the Street." He added: "Though we have powerful storylines involving Bethany being taken to hospital after taking ecstasy tablets coming up, there are plenty of comic moments in the pipeline. "They include Vera getting orgasmic on a massage chair and lecherous Dev making an idiot of himself." It's good to know Betty is staying around, she's a real trouper that lady. As to Vera and that chair, I am not sure I could cope with seeing that. ;D Dev making a fool of himself........no change there then.
