From yesterday's Mirror:
IAN'S 1YR CORRIE GIG By Brian Roberts 16/07/2007
CORONATION Street bosses have awarded a rare year-long contract to actor Ian Reddington, who plays ageing drummer and pub handyman Vernon Tomlin.
The reward for Ian, 48, comes as viewers thought Vernon was on the way out.
Chiefs at the ITV1 soap have also given Kate Kelly, who plays troubled Becky Grainger, a 12-month deal.
A Corrie insider said: "Both of them are loved and therefore have been given these significant contracts, rather than short-term ones.
"It demonstrates that the bosses think they work as important integral characters in the show. So it follows there are big plans ahead for the two of them and we believe viewers will love what is in store."
Kate, 27, is set to star in a storyline in which her pal, transsexual Hayley Cropper (Julie Hesmondalgh) finds out she has a son from a relationship she had when she was a man.
And Vernon will discover his lover Liz McDonald (Bev Callard) has been cheating on him with drayman Derek (David Hounslow).

So they are calling her Kate now instead of Katherine! Maybe now the other Kate has left she can revert to the name she prefers? Well I dont mind Becky, she has grown on me and is a good character now. As for Vernon getting a year long contract? Why?

Real life is full of people you like and dislike..Corrie reflects this..not every character can be likeable...it is down to the actor who portrays the character, and I think Ian Reddington portrays Vernon very well.
If the street was full of only characters you like it would be a bit dull
Some characters I like because they are played well and the character is a good, decent person eg :Hayley,Roy,Tyrone,Kevin etc...
Some characters I have disliked (love to hate) but they are played well eg:Alan Bradley,
but some 'good' characters are played badly and some 'bad'characters are played badly eg:Les
I'm not sure where I am going with this..but what i am saying is that with Vernon for example altho he is a lazy, weasel like good for nothing I like him because he is a well played realistic character..unlike Cilla who was bad (good) but has now turned into a pantomime baddy
does anyone understand what i am saying..?..if so can they explain it better than me ??..lol

I have a puddled brain so that makes perfect sense to me. ;D
They always say it's the actor who makes something good or bad. The naffest script can be saved by excellent acting making it tolerable. If the acting is bad so it's not believable and complete pants then it's all rubbish. Ian Reddington is a good actor. Pity there aren't more hired like him rather than because of looks.

I have never been that keen on Vernon. Although I don't detest him as much as I did
Becky I disliked intensely at first, but I have to say I like her now. I like the way she is loyal and sort of protective of Roy and Haley ( in her own funny way ) I also think she has some wicked one-liners. The writers have done a good job with her.

LOL Nick!
Sooty, she was unpleasant when she first came in as Kelly's friend from what I read but Roy and Hayley have become quite fond of her.

Becky has improved - she was always the sort of character who was desperate to belong, and being rejected made her nasty and spiteful. Now she is treated wiith respect, she behaves better.
Unlike Vernon - who has always been portrayed as a ponce and a lech, but has suddenly developped finer feelings when his meal ticket oops, I mean fiancee went with another man.
I don't relish seeing Vernon around, but Becky is OK now.

I don't mind Vernon either. I think Ian plays the part well and I think he works well with Liz and Steve. As for Becky, I have only seen her when she was unpleasant with Kelly. I'm looking forward to seeing her when she comes back on our screens. With so many cast members leaving, I think it's nice to see some actually staying.

Yeah but we could do the job of at least half of them who just turn up, be a glorified extra and take the cash.
