Bruce Jones to leave 'Coronation Street' Wednesday, May 30 2007, 17:21 BST
By Kris Green, Soaps Editor
Coronation Street actor Bruce Jones will not return to the Street when his contract expires in September.
Following meetings between the 54-year-old actor and show executives today, it was announced that Jones - who has played the role of layabout Les Battersby for 10 years - will not be seen on the Cobbles again and a decision is yet to be made about how the character is to be written out.
Initial plans suggest that his 'departure' from the ITV soap could be linked to the exit of his on-screen wife, Cilla, when actress Wendi Peters leaves in September.
Producer Steve Frost said: "Bruce’s portrayal of Les Battersby meant that Les quickly became a classic Coronation Street character who will be remembered for many years to come.
"However, after ten great years we feel we have reached the end of the road with storylines for Les. We wish Bruce all the best for the future.”
Of the decision, Jones said: “I have had a fantastic time at Coronation Street but the time has come to move on and try my hand at other things. I have already had some very exciting offers and am looking forward to what the future holds."

I'm just pleased to see him go - hopefully that will be the end of Corrie's attempted 'comedy' characters (see Emmerdale for similar cr@p unreal 'hilarious' oddballs ). Corrie, generally. seems to be bringing more of a sense of realism to things - as it always used to be.

At Granada! According to the Mirror he was ashen-faced or something meaning he's been sacked. Patsy

She could do. They haven't said anything about him. It was assumed with Cilla going he'd stay with Les but now they're both off who knows?

Not Les at all...Cilla was good when she first came into it..but she became a cartoon version of herself

I was hoping Chesney would`ve gone with Les and Cilla. His cutesy cherub act has gone as stale as the bread in `t corner shop

That's the problem when you hire cute kids who then grow up.

I agree CG. Altho' he was quite cute when he first appeared, his acting was never up to much, and unfortunately it hasn't really improved with age.

It's double standards really. They keep others for committing more serious 'crimes'.

I don't like either of 'em, but I suppose it's too much to ask that Les will form some sort of grotesque menage a trois with them both, enabling TPTB to get shot of all three when BJ leaves, perhaps writing them out by getting them to set off to join a weird 'alternative' commune in the Outer Hebrides?
No? Oh well.
