From News of the World;
Corrie Cancel Christmas
Scrooge telly bosses have axed Coronation Street's Christmas party to save cash.
Penny pinchers at struggling Granada TV reckon they can claw back about £20,000 by scrapping the festive bash.
Corrie stars and behind the scenes staff were looking forward to the knees up.
But they have been told that times are so hard the posh so, usually at Manchester Town Hall wont go ahead this year.
Last night one senior cast member stormed "I thought it was a joke when I heard. It must be worth £20,000 to them not to get all the bad publicity about being branded scrooges at Christmas"
A Corrie spokesman said it had been axed after the departure of Charles Allen, adding "It was his invitation and he has left"
It is the second time this year Granada bosses have enraged Street stars. We revealed in June a plan to slash wages next year. And execs have refused to rule out more cuts in 2008

Ha! £20,000? They spend that much on Reet's false eyelashes.
What a bunch of tight asses - they (the cast, NOT the execs) can all come to our Christmas party on 04 December inthe West End.
Then again surely the highly-paid cast can all pitch in for a decent do of their own? A few glasses of snowball and some scotch eggs don't cost that much.

The older cast never go anyway. It'll be the kids moaning about losing out on that free booze.
Why can't they have their party at the studio?

£20,000 is for too much for a Christmas Party anyway. If it bothers them that much the cast earn enough money to pay for their own Christmas Party!

They should and Barbara should foot the bill seeing as she gets paid most. Patsy

LOL! I read that. They're paying for it out of their own pockets apparently while a Corrie spokesman denied this party had anything to do with the cancelled one. Yeah right.

Well the amount they earn so they should pay for it. We have to pay for our meals when we go out for our Christmas party although the organisation does usually pay for the bar.

Yeah Jez...I agree totally. To be honest with the Granada bosses, it don`t seem fair for them to fork out for a knees up when its only the drunks like Vicky that go. And with her past history of drunk fueled rants ( the alcohol fillrf rant at Sir Ian McKellan springs to mind) , those sort of things should not be encouraged or tolerated. A few bad apples spoil it for the whole cast. All the moaners who complain about their lack of Christmas cheer should instead feel blessed the honchos at Granada decided cut back on Christmas food rather than cutting their pay - or lose their jobs altogether.
If Vicky wants to drink that bad, she can do it on her own time in her own home and not embarass Granada who pay her wages....especially as she`s already had a repreive as far as her job is concerned.

Agreed. Granada must think it's a waste of money laying out all that money and only a certain number of people turn up as well. I daresay Vicky will be there again. Unless she doesn't want to put her hand in her salary.

Its a shame only a small number of the cast go. I was reading an interview with Rob Collier who plays Liam and he is definately going.

No idea. He says he gets on well with his on screen brother and sister (Sean Gallagher and Kym Ryder) so maybe they are going.

Well the amount they earn so they should pay for it. We have to pay for our meals when we go out for our Christmas party although the organisation does usually pay for the bar. Us too, Jez, we had to pay for our own Christmas meal. I work for Transport for London, which is a huge organisation with dozens of departments, big and small, covering all aspects of public transport. In the past the company used to chip in £15 per head towards a Christmas party/meal for individual departments but they pulled that a few years ago because (as always) Senior Managers and Bigwigs were taking the piss and blowing all the cash - so all contributions towards Christmas do's were stopped so EVERYONE went without, not just the greedy buggers. They did generously book some crap nightclub and billed it as a TFL 'Christmas party' and we were invited to pay £25 for a ticket which included 2 glasses of either wine or beer, and a buffet. Nobody I know wanted to go to it, and so instead we all had a great time in our OWN small group of 10 in a restaurant in Soho - with traditional Christmas dinner, wine and a cracker(!) for about the same price. As for Corrie, I can't see the oldies wanting to socialise with the youngsters, even if it is just a once a year thing. .

They give us the afternoon off as its an all day thing right through to 9pm (and later for those that want to). We had to pay for the meal ourselves but paid that in advance save fussing (which was 11.50 per head for 2 courses - no dessert!!) They did pay for drinks for us all though and laid on a minbus to take us to the pub where they had a karaoke machine. Not a bad night out really, I enjoyed it. LOL yes Pearly you are right, there are some people I dont feel comfortable socialising with, when there are senior management there you have to be careful and watch what you say!

I think management would be less likely to socialise in case they say something they shouldn't and have a strike on their hands in the morning. LOL!

LOL! Well the management all went up to sing during the karaoke - dont ask me what they sang though as I cant remember. I know 2 people sang "Something Stupid" - remember when Johnny Briggs and Amanda Barry sang that in Corrie. Thankfully no-one sang any of Reet's songs (Bring me sunshine lol)
I am now a slightly concerned I made a fool of myself - me doing karaoke? Never in a million years if im sober.

Which wasn't a Reet song and Barbara completely murdered it.
I'd never do karaoke, mainly because I can't sing. LOL!
