From ThePeople.co.uk - 1 June 2008 What a difference a Dale marks! EXCLUSIVE Emmerdale 5000: WHAT HAPPENED TO ORIGINAL STARS OF THE 70S SOAP.. AND WHO FOLLOWED IN THEIR BOOTSTEPS? By Jon Wise
Smash-hit soap Emmerdale celebrates its 5,000th episode on Tuesday - 36 years since it was first screened on ITV.
The show was originally billed as "The living story of the Sugden family - the excitement of country life around" when it aired on October 16, 1972.
It was only due to last 13 weeks but kept the original title, Emmerdale Farm, until changing name in November 1989.
Up to 18 million viewers watched at its peak in 1993.
Now Emmerdale is more about sex and scandal than sheep and farming.
From air crashes to murder, suicide to incest, there's never a dull moment in the Yorkshire village.
Here, we look at the stars who've brought the soap to life, starting with the original cast.

Thanks for posting that piece, Road Sweeper. I missed it in the paper. Ah Frazer Hines, the bum toucher. I've been fondled and kissed by him many a time since 1999 (have him kissing me then throwing me over his shoulder on video) and enjoyed every second of it. ;D They should never have killed Joe off. Frazer's right, he could have stayed in Spain. Wasn't hurting anyone and it was a stupid thing to do. 2005 Bring back Joe! With me as Mrs Joe. Patsy
