From DSCoronation Street's Bev Callard's salary has been cut by 40% due to the credit crunch. The actress, who plays barmaid Liz McDonald in the ITV soap, has signed a new deal meaning that she will only be paid on a per-episode basis. Callard currently takes home £120,000 per year, but will have to feature in prominent storylines and be on camera all the time if she is to match her old pay packet. A source revealed to The Sun: "Bev's really shocked by just how hard times are on Corrie. She's not the only star facing bad news, but she's been hit the hardest so far. "Bev's a businesswoman and hasn't had the easiest time. While she understands the problems bosses face, it's making life very difficult." A soap insider added: "Contracts come up for renewal at different times. Characters with less air-time are really going to struggle." Callard has been forced to cancel her wedding to Jon McEwan as a result of her salary cut. Does this mean that the likes of 'David' will earn more than people like 'Emily' and Betty' who are in it less.?? Maybe a few people could be retiring !

I bet she feels really bitter knowing the likes of Miss Hell is earning a lot more than her if all the cast get paid by the episode. But being that it wasn`t all that long ago that Kym signed a new contract, Kym gets to enjoy her money for quite a while longer.
If ITV are really cutting back, maybe now is the time to start cutting back on episodes too.

That's is where they should be saving. Less eps = less cast = savings. They're too thick to consider that.

Of course they've been wasting too much money on too may eps.
Is it only Bev who's facing the pay cut or are they all going to be on piece work? Some people really don't pull their weight IMO, and should be paid accordingly. Or else Harvey's will have to shift a ton more than usual of half price sofas in order to up their sponsorship!

The older cast will be hardest hit probably as they do the least.

The older cast will be hardest hit probably as they do the least. Patsy I would hardly call it 'hardest hit' - if they only do what amounts to a few weeks work a year why should they get a full salary? People might be sick of the sight of the young/new ones ie Michelle, David etc. but they ARE putting the hours in. In a few months time they might have nothing to do for ages and ages while the focus is on other characters/storylines. Emily appears maybe less than once a month, and Tina has been in it may times a month since she arrived. I wouldn't say that the quality of the performance by, say for example, Eileen Derbyshire (no matter how good it is) is worth more than the performance by the girl who plays Tina (sorry, forgot her name) who is a fantastic actress, and who probably earns peanuts in comparison.

I agree with you, especially as a certain youth-obsessed redhead is overpaid. Bill Roache is allegedly on the same salary yet does far more.
Now when are we going to see ITV bosses take a pay cut and not accept their bonuses as well???

Bev Callard is hardly on the bread line though...not with her pub, and her second house in Spain. Plus her finace must be worth a few bob. Anyway, I would`ve thought she could have stuck a deal with Hello or OK magazine to get them to pay for her wedding. No doubt Kym Marsh will be contacting 'Hello' when she gets married again.

They should be paid based on the number of episodes and scenes they do.
Although its expensive to make more episodes the amount they must make from advertising during Corrie would surely more than cover it? Corrie pulls in the highest ratings on ITV which is why it (and Emmerdale) are on so much.

It seems she had to sell one pub and her home.
She also says she has had to cancel her wedding. ( My heart is starting to bleed here !!) You don't have to be rich to get married, if marriage was that important to her.........she could just go off and do it.!
