No. It was on Teletext:
Winstone eyes Sweeney role
Hardman actor Ray Winstone has been asked to star in the big-screen version of TV cop drama The Sweeney.
Nick Love's adaptation of the popular ITV1 show, which ran from 1975-78, could see Winstone, 50, take on the role of Detective Inspector Jack Regan, originally played by John Thaw.
Winstone told GMTV: "I was approached about it the other day. I've not read the script yet, but if it's any good, you never know."

As I said. Eff off! Or, to quote the great Regan, shut it!

I've never been a big fan of Ray Winstone. Plays too many thuggy roles. ( There again, I don't suppose he has really got the face for romance of comedy )
Like there can only be one man who can play Arthur Daley, there can only be one man who can play Jack Regan.

Excatly and we know the vast majority of these TV and film remakes flop. Remember Carlton's Thief Takers which the producer said was a modern day Sweeney? Never really caught on. I mean what can they do with a Sweeney film? Just set it in the 70s? Daft idea.

LOL! Ye Gods is right, Nick. Jack was from Manchester. Ray Winstone was even Cockney as Henry VIII. So a Cockney Regan? Patsy

Oh don't even joke about it, CG. They could be reading and get inspired to do more bad casting.

Sorry Pats .... I got quite queasy myself just typing it. If there is a remake and I emphasise the if then whoever gets the part of Jack Reagan has mighty shoes to fill. Whenever I think of Dennis Waterman lately, I don`t think of Carter but of the mickey take Little Britain did of him ;D

I can imagine it now (thank CG!):
Regan - Get yer trousers on. Yer nicked! Carter - Does he have to? He's got such nice legs

Confirmed and I'm depressed. From the Stage:
RSC’s Shrapnel to star in Five’s Minder remake Published Thursday 31 July 2008 at 16:35 by Matthew Hemley
Royal Shakespeare Company actor Lex Shrapnel, who was in last year’s Histories cycle, is to take the lead role in Five’s remake of the classic TV show Minder.
Shrapnel, who has also appeared in the 2004 Thunderbirds film, will play the role of Jamie, minder to Shane Richie’s Archie Daley. Richie’s character is the nephew of Arthur Daley, a character from the original series who was played by George Cole.
Five director of programmes Ben Gale said: “I’m delighted to confirm this commission which retains all the humour and charm of the original Minder. The assembled on and off-screen talent is exactly what’s needed to bring this celebrated series to life for a new audience.”
Minder, which will be a six-part series, is being made by Talkback Thames.
Executive producer Johnathan Young said the series aims to “satisfy fans of the original” but also “add different elements to excite new viewers”.
Five said the series would also feature guest stars and cameo appearances from a “range of British acting talent”.

I doubt very much it will be able to satisfy fans of the original. Re-makes seldom work. It was hard enough when Gary Webster replaced Dennis Waterman.
I don't think I will be watching it.

You're right. Ray was no Terry and Shane Richie is no George Cole. The first ep will have the most viewers as usual. Also Arfur was a character of his time like the Steptoes and they wouldn't dream of trying to remake that.

Remade series due to kick off in the Autumn. Amongst the cast will be Julie Graham (just seen in Bonekickers), Max Beesley ( Paradise Hotel) and Freema Agyeman ( Doctor Who). New series apparently re-imagined by Adrian Hodges (co-creator of Primeval). Max Beesley has said :"it's a bit like The Day of The Triffids, a bit like Lost - it's weird, but it sets you thinking." Sounds very promising to me.

LOL! I hate the term re-imagined. Why don't they just say carbon copy? What a waste of licence fee.

LOL!
It is more appropriate today than the 70s. We're far more reliant on technology and cars that we were 30 years ago.

From the Mirror:
Comeback corner - The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin
By Mark Jefferies 25/08/2008
The BBC thinks the time is right to remake the 70s sitcom The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin.
BBC boss Jay Hunt believes his "sense of powerless" is once again relevant.
It could be on screen next year but one vital question remains unanswered. Who could replace Leonard Rossiter as Reggie?

Then just repeat the bloody thing!!!! ARGH!!!!!!!!!

I think it would be less so. Can you imagine the feminist nuts allowing the fanstasies about Joan or thinking the mother-in-law's a hippo?

Laziness? Lack of ideas? TV gone so crap they're desperate to fill it with something? Maybe they should return to closedown around midnight and possibly several hours during the day. No one would notice.

Not another re-make. Can't they come up with anything new anymore.
I never watched the original, so I doubt I'll watch this
